those in the 700 block of 63rd in the wake of the terrible tragedy. >> wow, that's a hurtful feeling, that's a hurtful situation. >> reporter: police say it was sometime after 3:15 p.m. that the 8-year-old was walking home from school with friends when she was struck by a driver traveling 63rd and landsdown. >> she was laying in the street. >> i saw the book bag, i figured it was a driver who was hit by a car. >> reporter: the witnesses say the driver failed to stop and render aid and sped off. two men tried to chase after him, but lost him. >> somebody ran and got the mother, she came she was hysterical and everything. >> reporter: the tragedy has rekindled long-running concerns. >> it's like a racetrack. that's exactly what it's like all day everyday. >> reporter: police were stopping and ticketing motorists

going too fast as residents asked motorists to have respect in the wake of the tragedy. >> if they were in their own neighborhoods, some of their children could fall victim to the same thing. it's a sad situation. >> reporter: police are making an intensive effort to locate the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run. the front end will have significant damage. anyone with information call police. dann cuellar channel 6 "action news." >> information to tell you about this morning, a woman was killed after her car slammed into a back of a big rig it happened in south jersey. this took place around 4:30 a.m. on the soshedz -- southbound side of 295 in cherry hill. rescue crews worked for half an hour to free the woman from the wreck and that you see here, but she was pronounced at the hospital. this morning a philadelphia police officer is recovering after being shot several times.

the officer was hit by bullets while shielding his 2-year-old son from gunfire. officer rahmir area was off dutt the time. there was a gun battle where he and his young son were standing in the 100 block of parish street. >> he was caught in the crossfire, he immediately covered his son, as any father would do. he was struck in the thumb and fragments in both legs and buttocks. >> police commissioner richard ross said the officer got his son to safety at a nearby relative's home. the shooter was not arrested. turning to politics, president-elect donald trump is back in new jersey, he is holding meetings today with potentially key members in his transition to the white house. trump will talk to mitt romeny who was as you know a very volunteer critic of the

president-elect. trump aids are deflecting reports that romney is being considered for secretary of state. they say there are a lot of people that he needs to get relationships with. now in march romney called trump a con man and a fraud and trumped fired back calling him a loser. coming up we'll look at how they compare on key policy. president-elect trump commented on a settlement of lawsuits related to trump university. he settled the lawsuits for the small fraction of the potential award because he has to focus on the company. 6,000 students filed two lawsuits in san diego will share $21 million and $4 million will settle a complaint filed by the new york attorney general under the terms. president-elect admits to no wrong doing. there's good news for septa

we know this happened at 11:30 p.m. at bustleton and the boulevard in northeast philadelphia. medics rushed the 23-year-old man to the hospital where he was pronounced. there's no word of charges against the driver who police say stopped at the scene. new this morning, fire ripped through a camden county police car while officers were inside. look at the damage. the officers escaped with no injuries, thankfully. the officers were returning to the station at the end of their shift. the crews began smelling smoke. the officers called for help. the car is a total loss. police are searching for a driver who sped off after hitting and killing an 8-year-old girl walking home from school. this happened at 63rd and landsdown avenue in the overbrook section. witnesses say the little girl was thrown 90 feet. two men tried to chase after the

driver, but they lost him. police are looking for a gray or silver nissan ultima or maxima with severe damage to the front end. former republican presidential nominee mitt romeny is meeting with donald trump. it is said that donald trump is considering mitt romeny to be secretary of state. >> donald trump is a phone, a fraud. s promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. everyday throughout the election, mitt romeny showed contempt for donald trump and the presidential candidate returned the favor. >> the last election should have been won, except romney choked like a dog, he choked. he went i can't breathe. >> reporter: at the convention to crown the new gop nominee, the former pick was conspicuous

not too much of a actual edge, - not too much of a challenge, every individual is ready to play. >> now you look ahead to tulane this is a school that struggled, it's not a school to take lightly. >> they know how to run the football they are the number 27th rank defense in the country. normally those numbers would equate with a a lot of wins. it's senior night it is their last game at home and there are a bunch of seniors we expect to get their best game. >> the team talked about not overlooking a struggling tulane. >> we have to come out and play our best football, balls we'll get every team's best football. >> it's tulane, we have to focus on them.

>> you can't overlook any opponent. conference play, team is going to get up to play the best, no matter what that is for them or us. it will change the outlook of our team. i know they are looking forward to a great battle i'm sure they don't want to lose in front of their family and friends. they will come out and give us their best. >> if there's one theme it's running the football. if you run it well you win the game. >> it's the bases for everything we do. it sets up our passing by, yukon game. we were playing a third less defense than earlier in the year. everybody has done a great job how important is to run the football. >> you keep running the ball run might be the full back with blocking the way for everybody

football play book, coach ruhle you got a break last week, coaches never take any down time, how did you spend your football saturday bye week? >> earlier in the week, obviously i came back in and worked on football, we went out recruiting and got a chance to tell all the coaches in the area about everything we are trying to get done. it was fun to get on the road. this past friday and saturday headed down to cape may and watched college football and got to work on sunday.

>> reporter: now, your players had time off, as well. they spent it giving back, morgan siegfried has that story. >> reporter: temple football arrived back to campus at 3:00 a.m. following their win over yukon. it cover the start of the bye week and much needed recovery. but instead they volunteered their time at the pennsylvania special olympics fall festival. [cheers and applause]. >> i think it's important to give back, know what it's like to have fans at their games. they like to have fans at their game. >> it's.to give back to the football community and athletic community. we've been walking around between soccer and bocci ball.

we're here at special olympic as perform their best. >> i think it's very important for us to put our face out in the community and this is the second year we've done this we actually i think 257 athletes here today, that's 100 more than last year, being here saturday to cheer on athletes it's great for us. [cheers and applause]. >> this is one of the most important things we do all year and they did of giving back to the community we look forward to give do it every chance we get. i've been a part of it for the past three or four years. this organization does an incredible job, it's important to get a good turnout of temple student athletes. it's great to see how excited they are. it's greater they -- it's greaty are playing so hard and hearing
