"action news" reporter, dann cuellar is in our satellite center. dann, whatever the number turns out to be, this is one horrific accident in tennessee. >> that's right, a deadly accident in tennessee. the cause, very much under investigation tonight. it was a devastating scene. images show the mangled school bus carrying 35 children on the side, wrapped around a large tree. >> multiple fatalities. at this time, we cannot identify who they are until we notify all

the parents. >> reporter: the students from kindergarten to fifth grade were violently tossed around after the driver lost control about a mile from the chattanooga school. 23 kids were sent to area hospitals. >> what has happened today is every public safety officials absolute worst nightmare. that is nothing in comparison to the nightmare families and friends and our community is going through with this tragic loss to children in our community. >> reporter: it was a single-vehicle accident. the bus driver survived and is said to be cooperating with police. it is another crash contributing to the debate on whether all school buses should have seatbelts and they show what can happen in a rollover accident like this one. >> donors are lining up after a call was put out for blood

shooting at 15th four hours earlier. a church youth group leader is under arrest tonight on charges of sexual assault. the district attorney is asking any other alleged victims to come forward. 22-year-old michael of bensalem turned himself into police today. detectives allege he sexually asauled or attempted to molest a 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl on separate occasions inside the oxford valley chapel in middletown. flames up the side of mount penn in berks county. it started near reading high school around 6:30. the terrain and strong winds are making the fire fight more challenging. fortunately, no businesses or homes are being threatened and no one has been hurt. most of the city block is decimated by fire.

two people were hurt here. tonight, demolition crews knocked down what was left of the gutted building along wineburg place. the red cross is assisting the nine families that lost their homes in the 3:00 a.m. fire. neighbors complained of squatters in the unit where the fire started. no official cause, yet. another blaze injured seven people in new jersey. the blaze on the 700 block destroyed three homes and several cars. "action news" viewers shared photographs and videos they recorded as firefighters tried to put out the flames. the fire chief says the effort was hampered by downed electrical wires. four vishths remain in the hospital in critical condition. the other three released. philadelphia police made quick work of capturing a bank robber. he ran from td bank at jfk with

a bag full of cash. the teller placed a tracking device inside the bag. they apprehended the suspect two blocks away at 16th and market. police have not caught this suspect that held up the bank at 64th and woodland at 11:00 this morning. nobody was hurt. the fbi is offering a reward and tipsters can remain anonymous. a bridge in chester county is in need of repair. it was seriously damaged by a car crash over the weekend. this connects east and west townships over the french creek. pennsylvania records say the bridge was built in 1850. president-elect donald trump released a message via youtube about his transition process and plans for his first 100 days in

[ sirens ] nearly four hours after a tsunami warning siren sounded in japan, the threat is now over. there were concerns of a large tsunami after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of japan. there is still a tsunami advisory. there could be waves of up to three feet. crews are still assessing damage in the region. this is the area near fukushima

that killed 18,000 people in 2011. a storm system is bringing wintry weather to the northeast and is already dumped up to 18 inches of snow in parts of up state new york. drivers had to take it slow on a busy highway in syracuse after the snow and wind created near whiteout conditions. in millford, in west millford, new jersey, already enough snow for kids to make snow men. some places got up to four inches of snow. two police officers were the victims of targeted attacks in two different american cities. in san antonio, texas, a 20-year veteran of the force was shot and killed while writing a traffic ticket. police confirmed they made an arrest, but have not released a motive. a sergeant in st. louis, missouri, is expected to survive after being shot in the head twice. 58 officers have been shot in
