"action news" reporter chad pradelli is live on the block where it happened but sara bloomquist is live at the office of tobacco alcohol and firearms. >> reporter: local officials consider this a high priority case, investigators tell us they have not seen or dealt with an explosive device quite like this one in this area before. they feel confident that this envelope was intended for the man that opened it detonating the device sending shrapnel flying and causing serious injuries. it was just before 4:00 this morning when philadelphia police responded to 1808 pine street. they found a 60-year-old man suffering from injuries to his face, torso and left hand. there was clear there had been an explosion that happened when the victim opened an envelope he

thought contained medication he receives by mail. >> it was constructing so when you open the envelope it detonated. >> there was substantial damage to the area where it was opened up and the appliances nearby. it was a substantial detonation. >> police evacuated 10 homes and a nearby bed and breakfast as a precaution. residents were allowed to return and the victim was out of town so it was unclear when the parcel arrived it was added to the man that opened it but it's unclear if the envelope traveled by mail or if it was placed at the address. >> there is a possibility it went through the mail but we don't know that yet. >> investigators from the philadelphia police, fbi and postal are working around the clock. they don't know the motive for the targeted attack. >> we think this is a single

sin incident and a sure you no expense will be spared and we'll use every available resource to try to identify the person responsible for this violent crime. >> the victim's roommate was also at home at the time and was not injured. the envelope and the device inside have been sent to atf headquarters in virginia for inspection that should take about 4 hours and the postal specter is trying to track the bar code on the envelope and the victim received surgery today and is recovering. i'm sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. lets go live to the 1800 block of pine street. and "action news" reporter, chad pradelli, what is the reaction on the block? >> reporter: jim, as you can imagine there are a number of

emotions, a number of disbelieve and worry that more than anything neighbors want more than anything whoever it responsible to be caught. >> the authority left the victim's home with bags and boxes of potential evidence looking for clues in the early morning bombing at 1808 pine street. this rittenhouse neighborhood is stunned by the attack. >> it's scary and shocking. you know i hope he recovered well and i hope they find out who did this. >> molly didn't hear the blast but some neighbors did. police say it sent shrapnel flying damaging appliances in the kitchen and badly injuring the victim's left hand. >> it was so loud i came a half meter up out of the bed. >> investigators spent the day searching for surveillance video and answers. they want to know why a 60-year-old local caterer would be targeted in such a vicious way. >> in the middle of a city like

this -- >> pine street was shut down for nearly 12 hours as this investigation unfolded but as since reopened. i'm live in center city, chad pradelli, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. a philadelphia police officer is now under arrest for the shooting of his son. 46-year-old dorian young faces charges of attempted murder. the incident happened september 5th at the family's home in east philadelphia. seth williams says that young and his 19-year-old son, divine got into a physical argument and young fired two shot as cording to william striking his son in the back and foot. commissioner richard ross suspended young today with the intent to dismiss in 30 days. u.s. attorney zane themminger is leaving his post he says it's time to focus on family and explore opportunities

in the private sector. importapornographic and off emails exchanged between judges and top prosecutors had no impact on cases, that is the finding of the review from the attorney general's office. commissioned by former attorney general, kathleen kane, they found 20 employees, including judges and senior officials shared pornographic materials on state computers. days of high winds fanned flames across the delaware and lehigh valley valleys. firefighters spend the day containing this fire in camden county on 206 in waterford township is 80% contained. in berks county, in reading, pennsylvania state fire officials are keeping watch on hot spots after a brush fire burnt on mount penn last night.

the flames were placed under control early this morning. this began in the woods behind reading high school and crews will use gps devices to measure the size of the fire. a bull made a break for it, trying to escape a slaughter house in fishtown today in philadelphia. an "action news" viewer captured video of the animal weaving its way through traffic on i-95 near i-676, the bull then exits the highway at callow hill. for public safety reason police and wildlife officials decided to shoot the bull at 8th street. it was extraly close call sunday morning when a large tree fell on ton of a passing car in the roxborough section of philadelphia. the driver was a 76-year-old woman who had to be rescued from the vehicle. we were able to speak to that driver today. "action news" reporter, walter perez has that story.

>> the wind was whipping this past sunday as helen quigley was driving down henry avenue and noticed a huge tree swaying with the wind. >> all of a sudden i thought i better hit the break. and the tree was on top of me. >> the huge tree crushed a parked vehicle before landing on hers. she found herself pinned inside with the roof of her car pinning her head and was terrified but remembered a prayer. >> wherever i get in my car i fray to my guard again angel. >> that was in the form of an off-duty police officer. he reached his hand inside of the crumbled window. >> he stayed with me and called 911. >> firefighters. tracted her from the car in less than 30 minutes and helen was

rushed to the hospital and released a few hours later with bumps and bruises and a huge relief for her family including her son state representative, tom quigley. >> i couldn't believe the luck, nothing happened seriously and walking out of there by 3:00 in the afternoon. just unbelievable. >> mrs. quigley said she is eturnly grateful for those first responders that pulled her from the wreckage. >> i want to thank them all because i'm still here. >> there is one thank you mrs. quigley has yet to deliver. because her head was pinned down like this, she couldn't see her rescuer. and the family is hoping that the officer will can't representative quigley office so they can personally thank him. the countdown is on. preparations are in high gear

huge tra vel day tomorrow and then of course the holiday. what about the accuweather forecast? >> it's getting unsettled toward thanksgiving but not that bad. we have had worse. believe me. stormtracker 6 live double scan showing tonight all is clear out there not a cloud in the sky and if you head to philadelphia international airport tonight pretty quiet conditions. and this is going to be a busy place tomorrow. one of the busiest travel days of the year. this is really the only place we are looking at some traffic troubles. the midwest, if you fly into detroit or chicago you will be dealing with rain delays, minneapolis also some snow and that system that will be cutting up to the north and bring us clouds with a few showers on thanksgiving. but if you do driving in the east it's looking great i-95 to

new york city and boston is clear and south to richmond and i-95 to charlotte no problems west to pittsburgh looking dry and clear tomorrow. right now temperatures on the cool side. 44 degrees our high only made it up to 48 that is 6 degrees below normal. allentown 35 and millville 35 and wilmington 41 and trenton 38 degrees, winds are finally diminishing and still it's breezy enough to have a windchill and make its feel like 30 in allentown and 14 in the poconos and 39 in philadelphia and 41 in cape may and the high pressure is building in tonight. clear skies and low humidity and diminishing winds that adds up to the coldest night so far this season. and this is the system that i am tracking for thanksgiving, satellite 6 along with action radar showing you see that comma shape a strong storm but the bulk of it misses us to the north. kind of a secondary low develops and brings us clouds and showers on thanksgiving.
