traveling by car. 3.7 million are taking to the air. and 750,000 people are riding the rails. it is an intense travel day, but the rewards make it all worthwhile to spend thanksgiving with family and those we love. it is wednesday night and we hope that all of you are having a wonderful thanksgiving day tomorrow. our big story we have three reports on the holiday tonight. dan will have the annual parade preview. melissa magee has the latest from accuweather. first to christie ileto. what's the travel situation at this late hour? >> reporter: so, jim, we continue to see a steady stream of people coming here to the rest stop. while traffic is light on the turnpike, getting around today proved to be a challenge for many travelers. where are you traveling from?

>> charlotte, north carolina. >> reporter: they're in the middle of an 11-hour drive with two young children. >> all the bathroom breaks and food breaks. >> screaming. >> reporter: the track to philadelphia's airport wasn't easy either. a steady stream of brake lights filli filled the exit light. >> it took me about 45 minutes to get here. >> reporter: fliers like the crow family was forced to tack on more time to their already lengthy travel day. >> four hours for a bus ride from disney world resorts to the airport. and it took probably two hours to get there. another hour for security. flight was delayed and we're finally here to wait some more in traffic. >> reporter: at the 30th street station, the big board spelled out more headaches as police investigated a pedestrian hit by a train in newark. >> i'm guessing that's my train

too. >> we've been here for a bit. we're holding out okay. our dogs, not as much. >> reporter: still, most people are expected to travel by car. >> it hasn't been bad. >> reporter: getting around today was difficult. just wait until sunday. that will be another busy travel day, if not busier for those returning home. christie ileto, channel 6 action news. between the parade and the touch football games, the accuweather forecast is a big deal for tomorrow. let's get the latest information from meteorologist melissa magee. >> we are tracking a little bit of precipitation across the delaware and lehigh valleys. you can see this warm front that's lifting to the north and east. some spotty showers in philadelphia. we'll widen out the picture. it's all a part of a bigger system here. you can see the area of low

pressure still over chicago. the trailing cold front over the ohio valley. and a piece of this moisture will work its way into our area throughout the day tomorrow. future tracker 6 showing you 11:00 a.m., couple of spotty showers in the city. and maybe some snow showers if you're north of the poconos early tomorrow morning. but for the 6abc dunkin' donuts thanksgiving day parade, a cloudy start. 8:00 in the morning, 42. 10:00 a.m. that number coming in at 47 with a spotty shower around. by noon as the parade starts to wrap up, it's 50 degrees with a couple light showers. cloudy with an east to southeasterly wind. we'll let you know what the rest of the holiday looks like in the accuweather forecast, jim. tonight, it's all about rehearsal in front of the museum of art. action news cameras caught up with one of the parades

perennial favorites. putting the finishing touches on their tap dance performance. let's get to our cherished holiday tradition, one of them here on channel 6. the annual thanksgiving day parade preview. we're live at 20th and jfk would. dan? >> reporter: the parade just seems to kick off the holiday season here in philadelphia. we couldn't be more proud to give everybody a preview of what's in store this year. let's say we hop on this decorated holiday express and give everybody a little tour of what's in store. ready? three, two, one, and blast off. as we take you down jfk to show you the floats lining up here getting all ready for tomorrow. the crews here, they got the music and everybody's getting in the mood. and then they have a nice giant

christmas tree up here on the toy truck float. i guess these folks really love christmas trees. look at all these trees. where are they going to put people in there? hello? anybody in there? we have a nice magical float here. we have also of course our cosponsor for the 6abc parade, dunkin' donuts. america runs on donuts. yes, indeed. they have a nice byplane there on the front. over here, a music float. on the other side of that float, and then of course our statue of liberty. give me liberty or give me death. who said that? patrick henry said that so many, many years ago. we would be remiss without the great grand float that kicks it all off.

mr. drumstick himself leading off the parade has he has for so many years. anyway, down at the art museum, a cast of thousands and thousands has been rehearsing for tomorrow's parade. let's take you there. ♪ >> reporter: marie and the salsa band rehearsing "carol of the bells." and then "burning up the town" with their tribute to prince. ♪ and then there's tap, tap, tapping away on their amazing production. what are you guys going to do this year? >> we're going to get under my seat. >> reporter: that sounds awesome. you ready for this? >> i'm so excited. >> reporter: so were a group of gospel singers.

live here on jfk, channel 6 action news. >> of course you can join us for our live coverage tomorrow morning beginning at 8:30. we hope that you do. all to watch as the 6abc dunkin' donuts thanksgiving parade steps off along the ben franklin parkway. other news at this hour, a medical helicopter had to land in a residential delaware neighborhood tonight to transport a woman who was injured in a freak accident. she was walking her dog when a jeep rolled down a driveway pinning her beneath the suv. the victim was trapped for more than 20 minutes on the 300 block of winding hill drive in mill creek before she was felony low the hospital. no justice, no peace! >> the family of a little girl killed by a hit-and-run drive is calling for justice. 8-year-old jayanna powell's parents marched from west philadelphia to the scene of the

accident today. powell was killed friday afternoon in overbrook as she was crossing 63rd street. her parents paused to remember their daughter at the intersection where she was struck down. she's loving, she's caring. anybody that met her fell in love with her. she was smart, intelligent. she wanted to be a lawyer. she was wonderful. >> police have released a picture of the car that hit powell. it is a silver nissan altima which should have damage to one of the front headlights and the front grill. an illegal immigrant from honduras is under arrest tonight accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl. police say 33-year-old jorge ramirez sexually assaulted the girl a dozen times. they're asking any alleged victims to come forward. ramirez met the girl on 2nd

street pike in south hampton. president-elect donald trump has named two women to cabinet level positions. nikki haley has been appointed u.s. ambassador to the united nations. she had some uncomplementary things to say about trump during the company. trump called her a proven deal maker. trump named betsy davos to become secretary of education. he's expected to tap wilbur ross jr. to be commerce secretary. trump released another video statement today remarking we'd had a bruising campaign, but we have the chance to make history together. and then trump said this. >> it's my prayer that on this thanksgiving we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country strengthened by shared purpose and very, very common resolve.

another child died today as a result of monday's school bus crash in chattanooga tennessee. that brings the death toll to six. police say the bus was speeding when it veered off the road and slammed into a tree. the driver, johnthony walker, has been charged with vehicular homicide.

investigators say there was no trace of alcohol or drugs in his system. but they do say walker had driven off the designated bus road. in new york's grand central terminal today, it looked like fireworks going off. this was actually a e-cigarette blowing up. the 31-year-old clerk reportedly needs surgery for his burns. >> it is not unheard of for e-cigarettes to catch fire which is why the faa banned them from being allowed in checked luggage on airplanes. black friday may be a shopping free for all. there has been a backlash to that and dozens of national chains are now refusing to open on the holiday tomorrow. among them, barns and nobody ls, -- nobles, staples and t.j.
