big story on "action news" is the arrival of the coldest agencies son. >> an code blue in fact is now in effect. it lasts all three the weekend. let's look live sky6 hd showing you a beautiful scene if you're inside looking out at city hall and the beautiful christmas tree but now that the sun has gone down it's feeling brutal out there. >> meteorologist cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board with details from accuweather tonight and the weekend is going to be cold. >> it is going to be cold. we'll end with a storm system. today though it was mainly dry but bitter cold. the high 38 degrees. that's 9 degrees below normal. the coldest day in 10 months and it felt about 10 degrees cooler than when you factor in the wind chill. the wind chill in philadelphia right now 28 degrees with those winds streaming out from the west. the winds will be diminishing overnight. so what this means is that the wind chill tracker showing not going to be a big change in how it feels overnight. bicep clock, 26 degrees and then gradually dropping by

tomorrow morning, the wind chill 21 degrees and we'll see just partly cloudy skies generally. we are seeing a few lake effect snow showers surviving the long journey from lake ear regent most of the activity has been north of philadelphia. they're kind of dying out but i'm tracking a pretty intense storm system right now. it's pulling into the pacific northwest. this is the system that will bring us some precipitation sunday night into monday and with a cold air in place, some areas it will start as snow. this is what we expect right now. philadelphia and areas down to the south and east this is completely a rain event. however, the northwest suburbs, lehigh valley, berks county, extreme northern county poconos it will begin as a period of snow before a changeover to rain by monday morning. monday morning commute will be a messy one. i'll talk about just how much snow top expect before the changeover coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, cecily, thank you. keep track of the wintry conditions this weekend with

"action news" reporter vernon odom live in north philadelphia tonight with more. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, monica. the emergency room here at temple university hospital is where many overdose victims are brought to be saved in inn there is in that fact time. and the city's medical examiner tells me today that the number of overdose deaths this year could go up 25 to 30 percent. >> i am a heroin addict and i am homeless. >> reporter: this is debbie a heroin at ticket who lives or rather survivors in the streets of kensington. one of philadelphia's busiest heroin trafficking areas.

she's aware of all the heroin related deaths in the city in recent weeks. the medical examiner who is awaiting many toxicology reports believe there may have been anywhere up to 35 overdose deaths since december the first. a lot of people out here overdosing on heroin these days you know. >> yes, i know they are. >> reporter: does that scare you. >> y-it does. right now i'm trying to get help so i can get off of it. are you afraid of killing yourself out here. >> yes, i am. >> reporter: police say "a bad batch of heroin is probably not the singular cause of this latest epidemic." >> i know there's been reports of a number of different things. that's something i'll leave to our lab to determine what, if anything -- what type of agents if any have been used to whether cut or lace or whatever terminology you wants to use have been used if any. >> reporter: in the suburbs, this hatboro woman gwendolyn prebish age 27 center arrest charged with criminal homicide and drug delivery in the case of a 32-year-old willow grove resident.

the d.a. says she agreed to deliver heroin to him but it proved to be the even deadier drug fentanyl. ly. >> a lot of these people are buying fentanyl mixed with heroin and fentanyl can be 40 to 50 times stronger than heroin and unfortunately the addicts when they find out someone has overdosed on something they want that. >> reporter: rick, tonight law enforcement sources across the area tell me the best they're doing the best they can and but as long as the marketplace stays strong someone will try to come out and fill that demand no matter how many arrests there are. live at temple university hospital in north philadelphia, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news." ly. >> all right, vernon thank you. police have not yet revealed a motive in the death of a mother in bucks county. her 30-year-old son has been arrested and charged with a

crime. police say zachary cope admitted to attacking and stabbing his mother 42 '52-year-old rebecca cope inside their home in lower makefield bucks county. cope told them he did it after officers found him roaming the neighborhood. he's charged with criminal homicide and possession of an instrument of crime. >> police are telling people in and around temple university's campus to be any on alert after a peeping incidents near campus. police say the man seen in this surveillance video took pictures of a.m. 20-year-old woman through her window as she was getting dressed. it happened at 10:30 monday night in the 1500 block of north 15th street. after someone noticed the suspect, he fled the scene. nine vehicles collided in a chain reaction crash on interstate 295 this morning. chopper6 hd over the northbound lanes in haddon heights as the vehicles were being towed. officials say it started as a minor crash with two vehicles. then the pileup happened afterwards. only one minor injury was reported. ly. >> veterans from throughout our area gathered at the

battleship new jersey to pay tribute to those who lost their lives at pearl harbor 75 years ago. the ceremony began way air force filed followed guy buy wreath launch the action brought the united states into world war ii. >> it is busiest time of year for a family owned poinsettia farm in monmouth county but the business is really a year round operation and it takes a big team of grow stories get those holiday plants ready in time for christmas. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has that story. >> reporter: it's crunch time at k pack farm in allentown new jersey one of the big effort poinsettia growers in the state. >> we do around 95,000 poinsettia as year. they vary from 12-inch to a 4-inch poinsettia. >> reporter: warehouse employees start at 7:30 picking and packing orders at this third generation family

business. >> right now bow now it'sly in full gear. >> reporter: jeff walls is the head grower. he makes sure that every plant top quality for the wholesalers and clients cube pack sells to. >> it's a long crop and they're a little finicky about nutrition. once you get nutrition down they take care of themselves after that. >> they're really in demand it's rush rush right now. >> reporter: interior plant scaper david is selecting the poinsettias he's you'll for this business. he's a loyal customer. >> they do the best, they grow the best. they've done it for years and yeah this is where we shop. >> reporter: red remains by far the most popular color and course of course it's the most traditional but over the years they've developed all kinds of different colors and varieties. there's white and pink and very gated varieties but you can also get teal or purple poinsettias. they're painted by the way or plants with glitter or snow. >> busy right now three weeks or so we'll be busy until christmas eve. we're selling everything.

blocking the off ramp and the right lane it's definitely going to be a slow go for you. let's take a look at the big picture and show you what is happening. delayed 8 miles per hour on the schuylkill expressway right at city avenue. we also have a couple other slow spots 95 right at cottman avenue, that's 16 miles per hour. let's talk about the vine street expressway. a live look here. if you're traveling on the eastbound side you can see how jammed up it is but you'll see a little break in the action around eighth street but approaching 95 it does get crowded. one more issue to report if you're traveling out right by kelly drive, reservoir drive at kelly drive expect a crash there. rick and monica, back to you. >> all right, gina thank you. mail carriers in south philadelphia were honored today fratch cheering quite -- for achieving quite a safety mile story. 11 postal service letter carriers got the 100 million steps award. they've been on foot routes and have walked accident free for 30 years or more. congratulations to everyone who was recognized today.

>> florida's governor and tourism officials declaring victory over the zika virus. governor rick scott announced all areas of florida have been cleared of active zika transmission. the first cases through mosquito bites on the u.s. mainland reported there in july. officials credit the beginning of south florida's cool winter season with suppressing disease carrying mosquito populations along with their aggressive mosquito control measures. >> health check. new study found parents are sometimes getting it wrong when it comes to liquid medication for their children. one out of five parents who took that's right a trial measured more than twice the directed dose nearly all of them measured inaccurately to some degree. researchers are recommending pediatricians give dosage directions in milliliters

instead of teaspoons and parents should also use a syringe not a cup. >> have someone show you in the office because sometimes even where the plunger line is it's confusing to parents so if you're unclear i always say let me show you, we can draw up a little bit of water in the office and i can show you way syringe. >> you can get a liquid medication syringe at any pharmacy or pediatrician's office. 80 percent of all infections are transmitted through touch. that's why doctors continue to tell parents that washing their hands is the best way to avoid most germs. warm water, a teaspoon of soap and a good lather for at least 15 seconds should do the trick. problem is researchers say most people only wash their hands for less than 10 seconds. also doctors recommend to wash around your wrists as well. >> two-year-old conjoined twin sisters from california has been successfully separated after 17 hours of surgery and they're improving every day so their mom is talking about

their family's miracle for the first time. abc's lauren lyster has that story. >> reporter: twins eva and erica sandoval are recovering from surgery resting in separate beds for the first time ever. the two-year-old girls literally joined at the hip since before birth until now. >> they have a strong loving family and they'll -- they'll have the independence that they've been looking for, too. >> reporter: at stanford lucille packard children hospital earlier this week goodbye kisses from family and prayers from the medical team before doctors went to work separating the conjoined twins in a marathon surgery lasting 17 hours. >> fusion was right up to their sternal bond. >> reporter: a team of 50 working around the clock using a 3-d imaging system to help with the procedure. then for the first time in their lives the sisters were wheeled out into their em rooms. the twin's parents and other siblings embracing as they

>> ♪ >> the government is proposing that airlines be allowed to permit passengers to make phone calls during flights using wifi. this despite complaints from flight attendants and others that the calls could be disruptive and the department transportation proposal leads it is up to the airlines. >> the world's largest beverage maker is about to get a new ceo. today coca-cola announced ceo kent will step down from his position next year.

the 64-year-old has been ceo for more than eight years now. kent will be replaced by chief operating officer james quincy. the company has been under pressure to grow as people around the world drink less soda. a drexel university students is heading up a project to help feed the homeless in philadelphia. evan ellers used the 50 remaining meals on his school dining plan on to go meals instead. he and a friends handed them out this afternoon in center city. he had that sands wind chills salads juices. evan called his project self which that stands for sharing excess for the less fortunate. >> very nice. >> peco lighting up the holidays this season and "action news" is bringing you some of the best holiday displays from around our area a brandywine museum chadds chads ford treasured family tradition. there are massive christmas trees.

sun sets will actually start getting later by sunday. speaking about lake effect snow you can see we have this band of some lake effect snow pushing through parts of berks county, chester county, over the turnpike in elverson crossing 222. this has made it all the way from the great lakes, an indication of just how unstable our atmosphere is and how strong the winds are. right now we've got winds out of the west sustained anywhere from 10 to 16 miles per hour and that created wind chills in the 20's today. wind chill philadelphia 28 degrees. allentown 23. wilmington 26. and it feels like 26 degrees in trenton so definitely a chilly night. satellite6 along with action radar showing we started the day with sunshine. clouds building in the afternoon. now that the sun has set, the clouds are really beginning to break up. overnight partly cloudy skies, should be a dry night. it will be chilly but the winds diminishing somewhat.

28 in philadelphia, 24 allentown, 26 wilmington and cape may 31 so if you're heading out on this friday night you definitely do want to bundle up. tomorrow we'll see a mixture of clouds and sunshine. it will be cold, not as windy as today. at 7 o'clock 29 degrees. by 1 o'clock, 37. really holding at about 37, 38 degrees by 4:00 and then by 7 o'clock dropping down to 34 degrees. sunday clouds roll in pretty quickly. this is 8 o'clock in the morning. the thickest clouds to the south. as we head into sunday night this is when we get a piece of the storm system. this is first a warm front. this is known as warm invection so that could create some snow showers across the lehigh valley and the poconos and then as the storm gets closer, it will be pulling in warmer air so temps actually rising by monday morning 3 o'clock in the morning it's 41 degrees and raining in philadelphia. still a bit of a mix in the northern lehigh valley, still snowing in the poconos but then by monday morning, the

commute, we've got rain across our entire viewing area, even in the poconos it will be changing over to rain. as far as snowfall accumulations we're looking at just a few flakes before the rain around philadelphia. the far northwest suburbs one to 3 inches of snow before that changeover to rain, that changeover will wash away all that snow, kind of wasted in the poconos. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow partly sunny skies a cold day 38 degrees. sunday it's cloudy, it's cold, 37 degrees, some snow showers possible. monday, though, with that storm system cutting to the west, temperatures actually mild, 53 degrees but it will be a wet day, generally about a half inch of rain. tuesday we dry out partly sunny 45. wednesday rain and snow showers with our next front behind that system even colder air than this weekend. adam will talk about that in the accuweather 7-day forecast t i'll let him handle it. >> colder. wow. >> it will make this weekend seem mild. >> great. >> thanks cecily. all right. >> she was laughing when she

>> ♪ >> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. president-elect trump continues to build his team while news surfaces that a big supporter will not be joining him at all. we are live. a collision between several cars at a busy intersection injures several people including three children and the eagles are in need of a win and they're going have to go through the redskins to get it. jaime apody with a preview. >> ♪ >> now the details. president-elect donald trump continues to vet possible administration officials as his thank you -- on his thank you tour across several battle ground states this as president obama orders a review of election related hacks possibly at the hands of russia. abc's lana zak is live in washington tonight with those details. lana, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, rick. and the president-elect just left louisiana. he was stumping for the republican candidate for senate there. they are going to head to the polls tomorrow for a runoff election and they'll determine if that last seat in the senate gets filled by a

republican or a democrat. >> ♪ >> reporter: president-elect donald trump's thank you tour continues with visits to michigan and louisiana. the senate seat there still up for grabs in a runoff election. >> tomorrow we need to you go to the polls and send john kennedy to the united states senate and that's why i'm down here. >> reporter: mr. trump renewing a campaign pledge to build a wall on the southern border with mexico. >> we're going build the wall. well f-john's not there maybe we can't build the wall so now i know you're going come out. >> reporter: he met with the man who may be his most powerful legislative ally speaker of the house paul ryan. >> we had a great meeting talk about our transition. we're excited about hitting the ground running in 2017 to put this country back on track. >> reporter: a major announcement for the transition team. rudy giuliani has removed himself from consideration for a post in the trump administration. they say he will that continue as a vice chair of the

transition team. meanwhile at the white house, the current president has requested a review of hacks related to the last election. >> president earlier this week instructed the intelligence community to conduct a full review of the pattern of malicious cyber activity related to our presidential election cycle. >> reporter: and i have to tell you, rick, it is very interesting that development with rudy giuliani the most loyal trump advocate during the campaign chris christie rudy giuliani newt gingrich none of them now it looks like will actually hold al formal post in the trump administration. reporting live from washington, lana sack, channel6 "action news" back to you. >> we're hearing from the father of a teenager shot by police inside of a nevada high school this week. the 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after police shot him as they say the boy was lungeing at classmates way knife. the boy's dad now writes on facebook that his son is a special needs student who brought the knife to protect himself from bullies. the police response has been

widely criticized but the school superintendent has offered praise for the first responders. >> funeral arrangements are being planned for the late john glenn a space hero and former u.s. senator. glenn's body will be taken to the ohio statehouse for a public viewing next week. a memorial service is being planned at ohio state university. actual times are still being worked out. and burial will be at arlington national cemetery near washington. glenn died yesterday at age 95. he was the first american to orbit the earth back in 1962. president obama has ordered flags lowered to half-staff in his honor. and world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the tributes to john glenn as well as donald trump's tests fill his administration. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news tonight the father and son owners of a.m. south philadelphia body shop at the center of a major insurance fraud case learned their fate today. ronald galati senior and his son own america collision.

both admitted to playing roles in a wide ranging scheme where philadelphia city vehicles needing unnecessary repairs would be fickesd at their shop. senior was sentenced to 14 and a half 229 years in jail. he has to pay $200,000 to the city and one points $8 million to the insurance industry. galati jr. was sentenced to nine to 23 months of house arrest plus $450,000 restitution. a sneaky thief made off with $3,000 from inside an acme supermarket in south philadelphia. happened inside the store on the 1900 block of johnson street this past sunday. the suspect cramped behind the customer service counter and took cash from a drawer. he got away in a light colored vehicle that has a dark colored left front fender. if you know anything about this theft, police would like you to give them a call. investigators also looking for two suspected shoplifters who turned violent outside of a hunting park rite-aid back on december 1st. a loss prevention officer tried to stop the accused

thieves as they were walking out of the store here on the 4300 block of north fifth street a fight then broke out between one of the men and the officer. police say the other alleged shoplifter then returned to the parking lot and pulled a knife on the officer. he wasn't hurt fortunately. if you recognize either suspect you're asked to call east detectives. >> three children were among six people hurt in a five car crash in west philadelphia today. this the scene near the intersection of 57th and walnut. it's not clear what caused it but one of the three adults hurt is in critical condition. the other injuries are not considered serious. a person was found with several gun shot wounds here in the 700 block of walnut street in camden this afternoon. about 3:00 p.m. officers arrived and found the victim on the ground. that person was rushed to cooper hospital for treatment. so far no suspects. from our delaware news room now, two people were reportedly overcome by carbon monixide fumes and were rushed to the hospital this afternoon near wilmington. firefighters responded to a home in the unit block of cleveland avenue about noon.

it's not clear what caused the co leak or who, hour, seriously the two people were injured. >> supporters of mumia abu jamal hit the streets today on the 35th anniversary of his arrest. chopper6 was over the scene here in center city. they marched to call for abu jamaal's freedom and better treatment of prisoners. abu jamaal spent nearly 30 years on death row for the 1981 murder of philadelphia police officer daniel faulkner. he's now serving a life sentence instead. pennsylvania governor tom wolf continued his jobs that pay tore at m and g direct in bucks county this afternoon. the marketing solutions company recently announced that it will consolidate its operations in bensalem and add nearly 60 new jobs. wolf says they have clients in the bio pharma industry. he said keeping a location in the southeastern part of the state where that industry is strong is it a is a "natural fit for the company." >> many communities across our area have posted code blue warnings because of the

dangerous cold in philadelphia. that code blue is in that effect until 6:00 a.m. monday. situations dire for the homeless. if you see a homeless person outside, please call the outreach hotline. there's the number (215)232-1984 to get them some help. we also have posted code blue information on our web site 6abc.com. the little ones will be nice and warm during the arctic blast and throughout the winter thanks to a company called keeping kiddies warm. it's a campaign. northbound side. you can see 26 minutes from the accident delaware state line out through to the blue route and then if you're traveling southbound not too bad there, just about 10 minutes. let's take a look at the big picture and show you what is happening. you can see a slow go. this is 95 on the northbound side right at the vine street expressway. that's going to be slow for you and then 12 miles per hour if you're traveling on the schuylkill right there by montgomery drive. but let's take a live look as well outside. this is in montgomery county in ambler on 309 southbound just past welsh road where you can see we have a crash blocking that left lane so it's definitely a slow go. this area in general does that tend to back up. rick and monica, i'll sends it right back over. >> gina thank you again. much more still to come on "action news" tonight. vice president biden traveled to canada to talk about the environment and climate change. but it's comments on prime minister trudeau's looks that are getting some attention tonight. >> and eagles need a win of course. they'll try to get one sunday against the redskins. jaime apody with more from players coming up in sports. adam. >> monica, the winter winds continue to funnel in. only feeling like the upper 20's right now. stays cold through the weekend

>> here in west philadelphia police officers with the 18th district played left to students today. this was the district's annual christmas party for youngsters. this years boys and girls from the global leadership academy were invited. plenty of food fun and festivities kids even showing off their dance moves before lunch as well. there they are. on the menu hot dogs chicken pizza and plenty of good l holiday parties like this only enhance the relationship between cops and kids. >> very nice. aren't they cute. meteorologist adam joseph here. we've got some dangerously cold weather in store.

>> bitterly cold over the weekend. by the end of the week some of us could see a little snow before warmer air comes in to push it to rain for the start of next week. up and down we go. but it's going up just in time for the precip. we don't want snow. mainly rain. as we take a look at storm tracker6. >> only rain. >> only rain. bah humbug. storm tracker6 live double scan we're dealing way couple of flurries and snow showers especially to the north and west of the city. breaking their way into parts of chester county right now. you see a floating flurry or two near downingtown, exton, malvern there along route 100 south of pottstown. and you see a little brighter white here passing over 176 south of reading, even a little purple in there in the center of that area of white which is a little burst of some snow showers, not doing much in the way of damp but again just an indication of that colder air that has pushed in that arctic air from the north and west. 23 right now in the lehigh valley is the wind chill. feels like 28 philadelphia, 26

in millville. 20's at the shore and in the poconos feels only 9 degrees. satellite and radar early sunshine as we saw, kind of quickly was gobbled up by that cloud cover with those cold winds and there you can see the lake effect snows and again some of those snow showers survive over the mountains. it doesn't happen all the time but it did with that cold air today but notice in the last few images here even the clouds starting to break apart once that sunset we lose the destabilization of that sunshine going and acting with some of that colder tire develop the clouds. so, tonight quickly turning clear, brisk and cold, 24 to 28 for the overnight lows. wind chills near 20 or so during the overnight hours. for the start of the weekend 38 degrees with that cold high in play. wind chills in the 20's, sun and clouds. then the high heads to the east, a return flow comes in around that high. in addition to a warm front. so that throws a lot of clouds our way, 37 degrees on sunday afternoon. could be some snow showers

late afternoon especially north of the city near the lehigh valley and poconos as some warmer air tries to override that many existing cold air and squeezes out some moisture but as we take a look at why we're going flip to rain here pretty quickly is the low level jet about 5,000 feet above the atmosphere will be screaming out of the southwest here, 65 miles an hour, puncturing that warm air in so it was 37 for a high on sunday. this is 4:00 a.m. monday as that jet gets going and we take a look at snapshot at 4:00 a.m. on monday morning and you can see temperatures rise overnight on sunday into monday into the 40's. lehigh valley you could see some snow at the onset including the poconos before that warm air gets in there monday morning to wash much of the snow away so just a few flakes late sunday night philadelphia to the north but north of that pennsylvania turnpike especially lehigh valley berks county we could see one to 3 inches late sunday night after midnight before it does change to rain

20's. and it didn't help the sun disappeared behind billowing clouds before it set tonight. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the big board. cecily, you can just feel it old man winter is ready to make his entrance. >> that's exactly right, jim. kind of a shock to the system. our high today 38 degrees. that's 9 degrees below normal. the coldest day in 10 months and it felt a lot colder with the winds. right now the wind chill in philadelphia 27 degrees with those westerly winds and that westerly wind is also picking up a little moisture in the form of lake effect snows. the news about the winds it will be diminishing. wind chill tracker showing it's not going to feel different in the overnight. 7 o'clock 26. you can see the wind chill gradually diminishing by 7 o'clock in the morning down to 21 degrees but again, we are seeing a little bit of lake effect snow. right now most of the activity across southern berks county, northern chester county. this is all just from the
