jingling at the malice as the shoppers head -- malls, as the shoppers headed out for center saturday. >> meteorologist chris sowers has the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, it's warm, right? >> reporter: it's mild out there, but now here comes the changes. the winds of change are on the way. actually you can see the rain starting to overspread the area from northeast to southwest. that's a cold front. the air behind this is bitter and arctic in nature. but this front continues to collapse toward the south and east getting very, very close to the philadelphia area. as we show you a closeup view there's norristown, phoenixville, pilots pottstown, reporting light lane, the impacting they highway 322 near honeybrook. temperatures is the big story here, the way the numbers crash. 60 degrees the temperature the last hour. now we're down to 39.

less than 300 miles away. 31 in pits, 4 -- in pittsburgh, 34 in charleston. teens and below zero across the high plains. the way the rest of the afternoon plays out, starting out in the 50s, but quickly dropping to 47 by 2:00 p.m. 38 by 6:00 p.m. at this point the windchills are in the 0s. by 10:00 p.m. we're to the freezing mark. windchills in the 20s. when i come back i'll let you know how cold it gets and how long it lasts in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. >> the strong winter storm moving across the nation's mid section left it's mark in time for holiday travel. many flights have been canceled some flashing lights in upstate new york and new england have been called off. if you're flying check with your

airline or phl.org. the snow caused dozens of accidents even with seasoned drivers. today's packers bears games could be the coldest on record in the nfl. indiana ice sent cars spinning. denver international airport is struggling after 300 flights were canceled yesterday. the airport was supposed to get an inch or two of snow and got close to a foot. despite plowing and de-icing plans went nowhere fast. travels had to re-- travelers had to rebook flights several times. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fatal fire inside a home that was supposed to be vacant. the action cam at the scene, the fire started at 3:30 a.m. and quickly spread to surrounding homes that were also vacant.

when crews searched the home they found the body of a man on the second floor of the house where the fire started. we're told the victim is in his 50s. >> two pets are dead and seven people are looking for a place to stay after a row home and is along orchard street with the latest on this. just heartbreaking story for the family. what are you learning about this? >> reporter: okay, we are learning that no people were injured and several pellets were rescued from the -- pets were rescued from the fire. however, two family pets died in the fire. we know where the firefighters believe the fire began, that home is a total loss and the one next-door is damaged. the quick moving fire broke out on the 4200 block of orchard after 11:00 p.m. samuel heard an explosion as far as a block away. >> big bang, i'm ready to lay down and boom boom boom. >> reporter: crews arrived to

heavy fire smoke 4249 orchard. the man who lives inside was not home, his two pets were, his cat and dog were killed in the blaze. next-door where the fire spread everyone inside got out safely, including the family chihuahuas. >> my grandmother woke us up, she said run, because there's a fire. we were going to grab the dogs, but they were really scared. red paw relief found them a short time later. they had issues fighting the fire because live wires fell in the street. red cross is assisting people forced out of their home. fire crews were grateful no civilians or firefighters were injured. >> it's unfortunate situation when someone's house catches fire during the christmas

period. companies worked hard and made sure everybody got out, we have red cross and peco an police, just a unified effort to make sure we're taking care of the citizens that the fire affected. >> reporter: and back out here live you can see an l -- l l&i sticker saying the home is not safe. couple of days from christmas they have family and friends working to board up the home and take whatever items they can out of the house. annie mccormick channel 6 "action news" back to you. >> an elderly woman and her son safely escaped their burning home in wynnfield overnight. firefighters were called to the 5600 block of windell avenue. there were flames on the second floor. the fire is under investigation. handicapped residents were

stuck on the ground floor of their apartment buildings overnight they couldn't get up to their units because the elevators were broken. the action cam was the scene the fair hills apartments in north philadelphia. william was one of the people stuck, he can't walk up to his 5th floor apartment. he told us the elevators are a continuing nuisance. >> i never hear this is happening at the other building. this is the only buildings it is happening to. >> it took three hours for the housing authority to reach a crew to repair the elevators. he did not get to his apartment until after 6:00 a.m. 538 members of electoral college are meeting in their respective states. they will declare who won the presidential election in their states. donald trump won 306 electoral votes, 36 more than to be the

declared winner. efforts to keep trump from the victory are expected to prevail. there is no federal law requiring them to vote for that candidate. yesterday, the president-elect was in mobile alabama, holding his last victory rally with his choice for attorney general, alabama senator, jeff sessions. trump promised he will be the president of all people. he spent yesterday morning on twitter taking aim at china calling it an unprecedented act that china seized an american drone while in operation near the philippines. >> meanwhile, president obama and the family are in hawaii. he was golf winning a long time friend and three aids. he has one public event scheduled the visit to pearl harbor. japanese prime minister will join obama it will be the first time the japanese leader has

glrm so glad you stayed with us, people living in eugene oregon are saying enough is enough. it's five days since an ice storm knocked out the electricity and they will not be back online anytime soon. power crews say there are dozens of downed branches and trees to clean up with more falling, with no heat or lights, many have left the area, some are camping out in their rvs. one man managed to get out and went for a hot shower. no reason to complain after seeing that. >> reporter: i was hoping it was not going to look like around here. it did look bad at one point, but the rain did shut off. today we're talking about the temperatures in the 50s and 60s. it's not all that cold. it feels nice, things will

change in the span a couple hours. 4:00 p.m., it will feel like buffalo, cold temperatures and clouds increasing, rain is on the the way. as a matter of fact as you flip it over to the radar, you can see we have a line of showers and light rain stretching from new york city southward through reading and allentown and lancaster. we'll make a couple of zooms and go along the leading edge of the rain. trenton area, route 206 is welt. later shades of green, the rain is falling at this point. raining lightly in willow grove and jenkintown. farther to the south, west of philadelphia, king of prussia area, you can see malvern, west chester, exton, downingtown affording a little bit of light rain this afternoon. a little bit farther to the south to chester and lancaster counties, oxford you're seeing light rain same thing with chadds ford getting a little bit wet.

confronted him shot him. the second shooting was in northeast philadelphia. police say a pizza delivery driver was approached by a 19-year-old man at 9:30 p.m. the deliver driver shot him at suspect was taken to einstein in stable condition. >> developing right now, syrian activists say militants have burned five buses assigned to evacuate the sick and injured from the city of aleppo. the lebanese militant group fighting along syria's government said the buses were burned during fighting during an al qaeda affiliated group and rebel group that supported the evacuation. >> thousands of people packed the ohio university state auditorium to say goodbye to john glenn. >> the space pioneer and former

is 12:50 p.m., look meteorologist chris sowers promised, it is 60 degrees, you're looking live at the philadelphia international airport. don't be fooled by 60, because it's going to get cold again. warming at the top of the world has gone into overdrive. the warming is happening twice as fast as the rest of the globe shifting the seasons. sciences have said man made climate change would hit the arctic first. according to the report card, the sea ice did not rebuild in the fall as it normally would. from mid october to november it was record.

nasa has 8 new eyes in the skies to monitor hurricanes. they launched a fleet of micro satellites that would carry pegasus rocket to 39,000 feet. it will measure wind speeds at the ocean surface and through heavy rains. that should improve forecasts of hurricane intensity. >> faa said new system enable toking pilots and controls to -- enabling pilots and controls to text is working out well. it allows controllers to text instead of using the radio. in the text pilots had to read back the radio messages causing delays and mistakes. with data comthey can read the message with no read back. >> especially when we get into the summer months when there's thunderstorms and things.
