as we look live now at the scene you can see the truck is still sitting on the plaza right there. the rest of the area has been evacuated. a passenger in that truck died in the crash. germany officials say that federal prosecutors who handle terrorism cases are taking over the investigation but they have not yet said definitely if this was an attack. david muir and the world news team are closely following this story. abc news will have the latest on the investigation coming up at 6:30 tonight following "action news" at 6:00. meantime, it's almost official. donald trump will be the 45th president of the united states. local electors gathered in harrisburg, trenton and dover today to complete the next step of the election process. now the countdown is on to inauguration day as the spotlight remains on russia's potential role in trump's victory. monday night monica is off sharrie williams is joining us and as we mentioned today was the final vote from the electoral college won by

exit ramp to interstate 95. this now has closed down that particular ramp. this is happening along route 31 in hopewell township. mercy county. that's where a tractor-trailer that was en route caused some type of fire here is that now causing big time delays as well. police have the exit ramp from 95 to route 31 shut down now as firefighters as you can see busy trying to work to put this fire out that was apparently caused by the tractor-trailer. no word on what else may have started this. but again, it is slowing down traffic in this area. as we get more information we'll pass it along. >> philadelphia police have identified the two people killed in last night's deadly crash on the roosevelt boulevard. happened around 9 o'clock last night near woodward street in northeast philadelphia. because the driver of the mercedes benz who caused this accident killed himself and his passenger. there was fortunate no other injuries. it happened around 9:00 last night. a horrific two car accident on the boulevard northbound at woodward street. this school bus which moments earlier had been packed with two dozen children was sitting at the light. it was suddenly rear-ended in a high rate of speed by a 2000 mercedes benz sedan only the 40-year-old bus driver was on the bus. she was not injured. the driver of the benz sedan and the female passenger died at the scene. >> i knew that under that car there were dead bodies because there was no way someone could survive getting squished by that car. >> really the vehicle is unrecognizable and on top of just the mangled mess from the accident, the car was engulfed in flames after the accident so it was also crushed and burned. >> reporter: two off duty cops told investigators they saw the mercedes run up the

boulevard at a rate far exceeding the 45 miles per hour limit on that stretch. the mercedes is registered to the man driving the car. the bus is owned by the huntingdon valley christian academy. their billing was closed today. our phone calls were not returned. rick, late today police police released the identities of the deceased. they're ramon camacho and 38-year-old lorraine rivera. live in northeast philadelphia, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news." >> all right vernon thank you. an early morning home invasion was caught on camera in the city's olney section. now police are hoping surveillance video will lead them to the suspects. "action news" reporter annie mccormick has some that has thay tonight. >> reporter: look closely at the surveillance video of a home invasion at the intersection of howard street and west godfrey a at least two of the assailant's faces are caught on camera. you can see as they rush

business owner khorn sao after he came from his restaurant in they pushed my dad into the house. they took his bag. >> reporter: both sao and his wife who are in their 60's yelled for help and their son michael came running down the stairs. michael says there were three armed men and a fourth person who appeared to be working as a lookout. >> just very scary to happen to my parents especially i worry about them coming home at night. >> reporter: they made off with khorn sao's backpack and his handgun. just over a month ago city council heard testimony from police and asian business owners who have become frequent targets of armed robberies. last year 16 percent of the city's home invasions were committed against asian households due to the belief business owners carry large sums of cash. michael sao believes the armed robbers knew his parents schedule. >> not sure if it was someone from around that area where the business is or maybe they told their friends and they started following them.

>> reporter: luckily the saos were not seriously hurt. take another close look at this crystal clear surveillance video and see if you recognize these faces. they were last seen leaving on howard street. the armed men were last seen getting into a white sedan near where the home invasion took place. if you have any information, call philadelphia police. in olney, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> well, a judge has dismissed a lawsuit aimed at blocking philadelphia soda tax which is still slated to take effect next month. that lawsuit was filed by the american and beverage association on behalf of several companies. it claims the tax which amounts to 1.5 cents per ounce on sugary drinks would drive business out of the city. today mayor jim kenney applauded the dismissed lawsuit. >> this indicates our position from day one that we believe that we were correct in our legal standing and the judge agreed thankfully and we'll take it as it goes. >> philadelphia is the first major city to enact such a

tax. mayor kenney had that pledged to spend most of the money from the tax on his universal pre-k plan. the tax goes into effect january 4th. >> all right. well, hopefully the ride home tonight not too taxing as we check in with matt in our "action news" traffic report. >> matt i just have so many jokes taking in today. >> sure just write them down. >> we have some trouble popping up in a few spots. >> there you guys go. >> you got that one. slow speeds along the schuylkill expressway just 14 miles per hour as you come into center city this evening. just 13 on the northbound side of 95 by the betsy ross bridge and let's look at this situation on 95 that we have been talking about for about the last hour. broken down truck here in the northbound lanes by the airport. they just got it pushed off to the side. so, all lanes are opened. the small delay that we did see is now cleared out of the way. along 309 hatfield there was a crash earlier this afternoon. gone now. still some residual delays. still one on forty foot road.

recent conflicts in the middle east. police in switzerland are trying to find a gunman after a shooting at an islamic center in zurich. officials say several people were hurt when someone opened fire. though it's still unclear if the shots were fired inside a prayer room or outside of the building. the mosque is frequented by somali immigrants. police say they are not sure if the shooting had anything to do with the location. >> north carolina's newly elected governor has called a special session this week to repeal a controversial state law. house bill two came under fire for limiting protections for lgbt individuals. it includes a provision that requires people to use public restrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate. governor elector roy coop area democrat called this special session after charlotte leaders repealed a local nondiscrimination ordinance. with presents on the minds of many this holiday season the u.s. postal service is hard at work making sure

26. saturday we started out the weekend with all of that snow, ice and rain with a high of just 36. we peaked to 60 yesterday and today. 34 degrees for the high. that's still below where we normally should be for this time of year. typically we should be close to about 44. north and west of town numbers are only in the upper 20's for allentown reading and lancaster just 30 in philadelphia right now, 32 in cape may and 30 degrees there in beach haven at the coast. here is satellite6 along with action radar. pretty quiet across much of the eastern half of the u.s. we've got this ridge of high pressure that's across the northeast so we're tapping into that cold canadian air but you notice that this ridge of high pressure to our north it suppresses all of this moisture to the south. there's a stalled out frontal boundary across the southeast that stays away from our region for the rest of tonight and into tomorrow as well. so over the neck 12 hours turning clear. it's cold. it is calm but temperatures north and west only in the teens. we'll drop down to 17 in reading, too in philadelphia. the overnight low in millville 18 and 22 the overnight low in

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> hello again. monica malpass is off tonight. sharrie williams is joining us. here's what's happening on "action news" monday night. new jersey lawmakers are at odds over what some are calling backscratcher bills. legislation that's making governor christie and democrats happy but at what cost? nora muchanic breaks it down for us. also a woman is reportedly confront by a violent stranger outsider of a grocery store but doesn't back down without a fight. also an update concerning dozens of orphans strand and pleading for help in war torn aleppo syria. >> ♪ >> but first we are continuing to follow breaking news out of berlin germany. at least nine people are dead, more than 50 people injured after a tractor-trailer plowed into a packed christmas market in one of the city's main squares. police said they arrested a

suspect near the scene but they don't know if that person was driving the truck at the time. a second person inside the truck died at the scene. german officials say that federal prosecutors who handle terrorism cases are now taking over the investigation. but they have not yet said if this was definitely a deliberate act. world news tonight with david muir closely monitoring the situation out of berlin germany and you can watch that tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> closer to home, new jersey lawmakers are expecting a marathon session tonight before they break for the holidays. of the more than 60 bills the senate and assembly are set to vote on at least a couple have run into a bit of a snag including one that critics are calling a dirty back room deal. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic live at the statehouse now with the full story. nora. >> reporter: hi there sharrie. this was a deal that was going give governor christie something that he wanted and top democrats something that they wanted. it was put on the fast track but ran into some big trouble

today. the symbolism was anything but subtle. a coalition of unions environmental and good government groups were handing out backscratchers at the statehouse in trenton that's how they characterize a deal cut between governor christie and democratic leaders. the proposal would have legislators loosen ethics law so the governor could make money on a book deal while still in office while christie would go along with $10 million in pay raises for legislative staff judges and cabinet members. >> you scratch my back and i'll scratch yours. christie gets a book deal and then some people get their salaries raised. >> to loosen ethics laws for a governor who has been so extremely unethical is absolutely ridiculous. the mystery is why on earth democratic leadership would be going along with this. >> reporter: the bills have been rushed through in a week. lawmakers have been bombarded with phone calls against the legislation. critics compare to it

extortion and we're told there were discussion about the bills in caucuses this afternoon. >> it's wrong and i hope we stop it and i believe we limit another controversial bill being considered would end the requirement for counties and towns to post legal notices in printed newspapers. governor christie claims it would save millions. critics say it would cut ad revenue to papers causing shut downs and layoff. it's been nicknamed the revenge bill. >> it's a clear pay back to the press and to the local papers like the bergen record that discovered the bridgegate scandal. >> reporter: over the weekend governor christie tweeted his response. senators weinberg and gordon revenge on taxpayers force them to pay $80 million a year to newspapers rather than free posts on web need tax relief. now the nonpartisan legislative researchers here concerned that putting legal ads online instead of in the papers could increase costs for towns rather than save money. we'll have to wait and see if these controversial bills are posted. it's expected to be a long

neither here at the statehouse. live in trenton, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, nora, thank you. a suspected thief did not count on his victim fighting back when he allegedly tried to attack herou her outside of a grocery store. he tried to hit her with a large stick threw hot coffee on her. that's when the woman pulled out a gun and fired two shots. one of the bullets ricocheted off the ground and hit a nearby security o he's going to be okay. the thief ran off with the woman's purse but was later arrested by police. two men charged in connection with the death of a bethlehem man appeared before a judge today. 30-year-old james heim balk is accused of killing 28-year-old joseph goda back in september. also charged 32-year-old charles yoakum. all three men were using flak today a synthetic drug similar to bath salts at the time when

heim back allegedly killed goda. investigators say yoakum helped heim back roll up the body in a carpet. the body was later found in the truck of a car. >> a man who served time for possessing child pornography is back behind bars charged again with the same crime. upper darby police have once again arrested john fisher the third on child pornography charges. this after a recent routine check from his probation officer. police say they found images of child pornography on his computer. he faces felony charges tonight. investigators say fisher was released from prison in march for the same type of charges. "action news" viewer captured this dramatic video of a house being destroyed by flames in winslow township camden county o of cross keys road. firefighters arrived and safely evacuated. one person from the house. that person was not hurt. it's still unclear what touched off the fire. >> now to the ongoing

humanitarian crisis in aleppo, syria. the evacuation of thousands of civilians and rebels from the eastern part of the city continued today after a ceasefire was quickly established. a deal brokered by russia and turkey has returned the city to government control. several previous ceasefires breaking down and virtually no humanitarian aid reaching its tens of thousands of residents there. as buses drove into the city to continue the exodus trucks carrying humanitarian relief met refugees in neighboring towns. last week we told you about group of orphans stranded in aleppo hoop issued a plea for help. well, today all 47 children were evacuated to safety. the united nations says more than 100 humanitarian staff on the ground will start man touring evacuations from aleppo in accordance with the new un resolution. they'll be syrian nationals observers from the international committee of the red cross and the steerian arab red crescent. un officials say the stave's

main goal will be to make sure all refugees make it to safety without facing danger from government forces. >> several people who became trapped by high waters while exploring a cave were rescued after 39 hours underground. this all happened in that binkly's cave. they didn't emerge at 3 a.m. theirst responders had to wait for the water to recede. everyone was prepared with food and water they only suffered mild hypothermia and exposure. today is the last day people can sign up for so-called obamacare health insurance coverage midnight tonight. officials pushed back the deadline from december 15th. president-elect donald trump is vowing to repeal obamacare

philadelphia. of course the philly phanatic was on hand helping to serve a bit of laughter and good clear. today's event was part of the phillies' organization season of giving. well, there were toys delivered to every child in kennedy university hospital today. this is the fifth year 14-year-old dj of sicklerville collected toys for sick children in honor of his late brother. emanuel died as a newborn at the hospital in 2006. friends school mates family and area businesses donated the toys so dj could put smiles on the faces of these children in his brother's memory. >> very sweet. the big nan red took a little time out of his schedule for a special visit to delaware county today. santa claus hand delivered more than 1200 presents to the three campuses of the chester community charter schools. the big man and his merry band of elves broader all sorts of toys to each of the boys and
