roads and near the malls but first to the forecast. meteorologist cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board with the call from accuweather. hi cecily. >> hi sharrie and rick. storm tracker6 live double scan shows i'm tracking a system arriving early tomorrow morning for christmas eve. remember last week i was tracking one. however, last week it was runing into some very cold air. it's very mild out there right now. philadelphia 43. reading 40. wilmington 42. cape may 40. yesterday temperatures were in the 50's. today made it into the mid 40's. so the ground is pretty warm so it shouldn't cause any major problems as far as traveling. and tonight the evening planner showing the clouds will be increasing overnight so the clouds really blanketing the earth, kind of trapping in the heat so temperatures not cooling off all that quickly. by 7 o'clock, 39 degrees. by 8 o'clock, 38. we drop down to 36 degrees by 10 o'clock and by 11 o'clock, 35 degrees under mostly cloudy

skies. future tracker showing as we head through the overnight hours, that moisture will be moving in but you can see that really most of the snow, the frozen precipitation well up to the north. this will be primarily a rain event. the question, though, will be our far north and west suburbs. there could be a few pockets of cold enough air could cause some freezing rain at the onset so the national weather service has issued a freezing rain advisory from 1 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock for the northwest suburbs including the poconos, lehigh valley, berks county for the potential for a little bit of icing. i'll talk more about that and have your christmas day forecast coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> cecily we'll check back in later. thank you. with two days left until christmas, plenty of folks are using every last minute before the weekend to shop till they drop. gray hall spoke to some last minute shoppers today. he's live inside the king of prussia mall tonight. gray you just have to give me a gift card, that's all, just a gift card. make it easy.

[laughter] um i'm still looking for your gift rick. here's the good news. i still have advertisement the mall is opened tonight until 11:00. peak time is right now. it's been a steady stream of shoppers throughout the day. they have been in and out of the mall and these shoppers they will be here shopping well into the night. it's the most wonderful time of the year but also the most hectic especially if you're still christmas shopping. last minute shoppers say you have to have a plan. >> having a list is important. get in early if you can and get out early and then settle in and enjoy the holidays. >> go in and have ideas, kind of go in for one thing and leave i feel like it's a little bit better than just kind of randomly walking around trying to find something. >> reporter: king of prussia mall like others will welcome thousands of people looking nor ideal gift. most will tell you it can be down right stressful and if you're not careful the hustle and bustle could turn you into the grinch. >> it's crazy. it's a lot of people, a lot of

traffic, no where to park, people get into it. >> reporter: some people say they enjoy waiting until the last minute. for many the holiday rush and crowds are part of their yearly christmas tradition. if you're headed out in these final hours just expect lots of company. >> too busy. i keep putting it off like everybody else. it's kind of fun, too, right. >> i say be patient. that's the most important thing. like just be ready to stand in line be patient with your fellow people in line and be nice to the sales associates. >> reporter: all right, so good advice. be nice to the sales associates. i'd like to remind you of the time again. the mall is opened until 11:00 p.m. today and tomorrow santa will be here. there's a section where they will help you wrap your gifts for a feast that is the latest from king of prussia mall, gray hall channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> gray thank you. while some are focused on shopping others are focused on holiday travel. the action cam was at atlantic

city airport where plenty of passengers were headed out of town. looking live now at philadelphia international airport where everything is running smoothly tonight. "action news" has had a crew at the airport all day long and so far there have been no major problems. airport officials say volume, they're actually down today compared to a normal friday because there are fewer business travelers headed out. the roads could be a different story. more than 90 percent of travelers from the philadelphia area are expected to travel by car this weekend. aaa says they are experiencing a record number of holiday travelers this weekend nationwide. all right, to our expert now matt pelman has been keeping an eye on the traffic all afternoon. he's in the "action news" traffic center with the update. hey matt. >> it's just a weird afternoon sharrie. as we look outside from chopper6 hd high over the schuylkill expressway, check out the traffic between roosevelt boulevard and montgomery drive moving just fine. no big complaints along the schuylkill expressway but then

other spots where we don't normally have problems we have some issues this afternoon. our next camera shot is 95 in bucks county. this is a broken down vehicle on the northbound side just north of street road taking out the right lane. so, little bit sluggish as you come north here through bucks county. and don't forget if you're trying exit the southbound side of 95 onto columbus boulevard, at the end of the ramp you have to go north on columbus boulevard. southbound side is still blocked because of that water main break from tuesday. and around all of the area malls, it's very busy. like along route one in delco by marple crossroads, along baltimore pike by the springfield mall just 7 miles per hour. along more land road by the willow grove park mall just 12 miles per hour right now. we also have a crash in abington township along susquehanna road at valley road taking out one lane and by the king of prussia mall we've had a couple accidents. one on mall boulevard by the schuylkill ramps. another just on 202 southbound at allandale and just in general speeds around all of these shopping complexs are not so hot on this friday afternoon.

we'll check it again, though, rick, in the next half hour. >> matt thank you again. in other news tonight, a ups driver is recovering after he was shot in the shoulder while on the job. happened just before 1:30 this afternoon near tenth and highland in chester while that driver was making deliveries. once he was shot the driver found in a nearby car dealership and ran inside for help. >> he came in because he knew it was safe. we always have police around. we service chester vehicles and we take care of the paramedics. >> police do not think the driver was the intended target. he is expected to be okay. another ups worker in the truck was not injured. >> the search is on for a burglary suspect who targeted businesses in three counties in the last month. police in philadelphia, bensalem and radnor are investigating at least a dozen incidents that date back to november 19th. tonight they are asking for your help. watch restaurant in radnor, the scene of the most recent crime. vern. >> reporter: good evening, sharrie. he is cagey and very experienced yet he operates in a very simple and direct manner. his last hit was, again, here in radnor as you said before when he strikes close stores around the area in the wee hours of the morning as he did here about 4:15 tuesday morning. here is the smash and grab pro taking off his rampage november 19th on aramingo avenue in philadelphia operating overnight using a clawhammer police say to smash right through the front door to grab the cash and make his get away. >> he knows what he's doing in terms of breaking through the front entrance of those establishments as well as knowing what he's looking for when he's inside. >> reporter: he's used the same m o. six times in philadelphia now getting away from the scene minutes before police on patrol get the alarm call and arrive at the scene.

12 times across our area without getting nabbed. five times in bensalem bucks county and now once in a radnor township delaware county. >> he's only in the stores a minimal amount of time. >> reporter: his strikes are lightning fast and the surveillance video is not that clear at the first watch restaurant in the lancaster avenue mall. but he seems to know right where the cash was being kept overnight. >> he did take a safe push it across the floor all the way out the front door and into the vehicle that was waiting in the parking lot. >> reporter: police are convinced it is the same perpetrator involved in this dirty dozen month long spree. they have been able to get clear video of his two known get away vehicles. >> appears to be an older model mercedes four door sedan with sunroof and then i believe the other vehicle in philadelphia jobs was a town and country minivan. >> so we're working together with those counties to try and get this guy in custody. like i said it's been a number of different establishments he's hit here in the city and southwest division and east

"action news" there as she, her husband and her son loaded up the boxes to deliver them today. >> if you have a penny more than the next person, share. if you have just a penny more, 'cause when you -- when kids wayne in the morning, they wake up to christmas.

>> it is -- >> it is. >> go ahead shar regional rail my fault. >> day five of the manhunt for jeremiah monell of cumberland county. police say monell brutally killed his wife tara o'shea in front of their own son even though she had a restraining order against him. >> ♪ >> last night o'shea's loved ones held a candlelight vigil in her honor. her friends told "action news" it was clear her husband wanted to kill her. now supporters of a proposed new jersey law say that legislation could have saved o'shea's life and many

other women in her situation. >> new at 5:00 "action news" investigative reporter wendy saltzman has the story. >> the question is are restraining orders enough or should more have been done to protect o'shea and other victims of domestic violence a law vetoed by the governor twice is being pushed through the new jersey legislature again right now to electronically monitor violent offenders who continue to harass their victims you. >> don't know how many times that she came to my house beat up. >> friends of 35-year-old tara o'shea say she predicted her life would end at the hands of her husband. according to these friends the mother of five did everything she could to protect herself but they say that wasn't enough. >> she went through the courts and got a restraining order against him. and even the time he broke the restraining order she would call the cops and they wouldn't do anything. >> on monday december 19th, jeremiah monell was accused of murdering her by slashing her throat in front of their

12-year-old son. >> don't wait for the courts. 'cause they're not going to help you. so run. >> it's a story assemblymen chris singleton says he knows all too well. lisa sin dell was one of his wife's sorority sisters killed by her exfiancee. >> every minute of delay where someone's life could be hanging in the balance there should be a law. >> singleton has been the sponsors of a bill called lisa's law that has passed the legislature twice. it bill would allow for electronic gps monitoring of violent offenders who have violated restraining orders. the system would alert victim and law enforcement if the offender comes within an established perimeter like the victim's home. >> we can give them peace of mind and a fighting chance. >> reporter: pocket vetoed it when it was passed in 2016. the bill is making its way through the legislature again. >> the technology exists, the

protocols exist and we want to try and give domestic violence survivors peace of mind so that they can have an opportunity to go about their day and know that they don't always have to look over their shoulder. >> reporter: in a statement governor christie said he vetoed the bill initially because he did not believe there was adequate technology and resources and pocket vetoed it a second time saying the technology was limited not reliable enough and could give victims a false sense of security. wendy saltzman channel6 "action news." >> all right. turning to health check tonight the holidays are not just a hectic time at home. it's also a busy time in the er. we look forward to those get togethers with friends family and coworkers but experts say it is very easy to get distracted and that's when accidents can happen. >> you may not be paying attention as much when you're going cut food. you may accidentally cut yourself. when you reach for something you may not go over that can department the kids are running around and you have an eye on them and a and eye on the stove. really try remain focus.

phone was ejected from the cup holder so he had no way of calling for huh help. >> i heard them call my phone. heard them all ring tones and i'm laying there boy i wish i could answer the phone but i can't. >> smith laid in his car alone for 12 hours with four broken ribs and a fractured ankle but he never gave up hope that his family would find him. sure enough, he eventually heard a knock on the window. it was a state trooper who located smith by tapping into a gps feature on his smartphone. >> investors hoping for an early christmas presenter left a little bit disappointed for the weekend. the dow jones once again failed to hit 20,000 points. stocks closed relatively flat ahead of the holiday weekend. the dow now sits less than 70 points below that benchmark. it gained almost 15 points today. the nasdaq also rose 15. the s & p 500 gained three. the stock market will reopen

>> if i'm for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan has a look at the holiday weekend that has a little bit of precipitation in it. >> little bit of rain to start christmas eve. tonight just a lot of clouds. we are live on sky6 taking a look at the center city skyline. a lot of green and red now that we are firmly i guess christmas eve eve and it's been clouding up through the day. despite the cloud cover temperatures again slightly above normal. 43 degrees currently but we hit a high of 46 which is 3 degrees above normal. yesterday 53. not quite that warm. allentown 39. wilmington 42. atlantic city 44. and trenton currently 43 degrees. big change from yesterday. the winds. this time yesterday we had wind gusts near 30 miles per hour.

now the winds have shifted. they're out of the southwest and they're pretty light, either calm to about 8 miles per hour and with the winds out of the south and the clouds thickening overnight it's really not going to get that cold. satellite6 along with action radar slowing we started the day with bright sunshine, bright blue skies. the clouds rolling in and thickening throughout the course of the afternoon and this is all ahead of a storm system that is going to be lifting to our north and west. so, what this will do is drive a cold front our way. there is some snow north of chicago. that's that snow will be missing us to the north. this is mainly a rain event but as it rolls in, some areas could see a little bit of frozen precipitation in the wee hours of the morning. tonight it clouds up. the rain will be here around dawn. 37 in philadelphia, 33 in reading, 38 in cape may. allentown 32 degrees and really the focus is the far northwest suburbs. future tracker showing around 3 o'clock in the morning could get a little bit of some ice, some snow near the poconos,

northern lehigh valley so that's why the national weather service has issued a freezing rain advisory. i really don't think we'll see much freezing rain. it's not going to be widespread. could be a few pockets. by 7:30 it's rain really everywhere except for the poconos could have a little bit of snow just kind of trying to hold on and then this system is pretty quick. by lunchtime it's clearing the northwest suburbs. still some rain along the coast but that rain moves off the coast by 2:30 and that means for your christmas eve services partly cloudy, not too chilly at 6 o'clock 42 and for midnight for santa's arrival looking pretty good, partly cloudy and dry, 36 degrees. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow we start the day with rain. we end with some glimpses of sunshine so by the time hanukkah begins at sundown it should be dry, 48 degrees. sunday you like today, you'll like sunday, beautiful sunny and mild, 48. monday a few showers as kwanzaa begins, 50. we bump it up to 55 on tuesday. a morning shower but then we trend cooler on wednesday, 42

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> hello again. monica is off. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. the rush is on to get to grandmother's house and anywhere else in time for the holidays. we'll take a look at how travel is shaping up. it's been a fixture in the italian market since 1910 but in just a few days d'angelo brothers will close its doors for good. and this is the face of a young man way new forever home. hear why his new mom says this adoption was meant to be. >> that's a greater story. now the details. millions of people hitting the roads rails and skies tonight to be with family and friends for this busy holiday weekend. chopper6 is taking a live look along i-95, all right, well, take our word first time. let's take another look from sky6. is that i-95? there we go. near the tacony palmyra bridge and look at all the

headlights. plenty of traffic out there this evening and we want to take a live look now from sky6 at philadelphia international airport where no major issues are reported as lots of people are flying to get home for the holidays. but in some places holiday travel is at a crawl. 13 states are under a winter weather alert. lauren lyster joins us with details. >> reporter: hey, rick and sharrie, yeah for those heading this way, it is particularly rough out west. the faa today reporting general delays arriving at san francisco international airport and here in los angeles at lax averaging about an hour and a half. weather and runway construction. saint paul minneapolis average delays about a half hour because of weather. it is that weather factor where travelers everywhere needs to watch outer for. experts say that is what you need pay attention to when you're getting ready to fly. a record number of travelers

expected this holiday season and on one of the busiest days to fly, people lining up from new york, to philadelphia, to chicago orlando and los angeles. and at some airports it's more than just lines. at lax flight aware reporting hundreds of delays. a perfect storm of more passengers, rain and runway construction already creating a travel nightmare there earlier this week. it rip fold denver. >> i just got here and parked. flight delayed two hours. >> reporter: in san francisco stormy weather causing three dozen cancellations and long delays. >> delayed two hours. >> reporter: it's not all bad. the airport misery not totally lacking in holiday spirit. >> ♪ have your self a merry little christmas ♪ >> reporter: but in may prove wishful thinking for some travelers with two storms causing winter weather alerts across the country which could impact trips.

and that could affect some of the record 93.6 million drivers expected to road trip this holiday season and there is heart 10ing news. overall flight delays and cancellations are far from record and relatively speaking they are marginally above an average day n los angeles i'm lauren lyster channel6 "action news." rick, sharrie. >> lauren, thank you. let's get a look at how our roads are shaping up. matt pelman is in the "action news" traffic center with the late evening upday. hi, matt. >> sharrie as predictable as the fact rick is getting coal for christmas this year is the fact two days before the holiday it's going to be very busy around the area malls. getting to our biggest area mall king of prussia is very complicated right now because of this crash. this is 202 southbound side as you come away from norristown and head down toward the mall. here near king circle so that's by the double tree hotel and the the red lobster up there. all southbound lanes are currently blocked because of this accident. if you're headed down to the mall don't counter on being

able to get through along 202. 23 or church road would be some alternates and we'll keep you posted on twitter. headed to the philadelphia premium outlets there's also a crash right now evergreen road right off of 422 and just plenty of volume around those malls. by marple crossroads in delco on route one, just 7 miles per hour, by the springfield mall on baltimore pike just 8 miles per hour. jammed in all these locations by these shopping complexes. luckily on the highways it's not quite as bad. speeds in the 30's right now on the schuylkill. but exiting 95 at columbus boulevard is still tough. once you get off the ramp you have to get onto northbound columbus boulevard. can't go southbound. that's because of that water main break down around queen street from just a couple days ago. elsewhere on 95 in bucks county, there was a disabled vehicle. then there was a crash northbound past street road. everything is off to the side but a little sluggish and headed to the franklin mills now philadelphia millions along woodhaven road a little sluggish there with speeds in the 40's. head to the deptford mall just

9 miles per hour but a crash on 42 has cleared out. rick and sharrie have a great christmas. >> you, too. merry christmas matt. procrastinators packing into local malls trying to find the perfect gift evident by all the traffic matt just showed us. the action cam was at the king of prussia mall as shop ertz looked for those things. experts say gift cards are still the number one gift. the king of prussia mall is opened until 11:00 tonight. >> ♪ nice. shoppers at the italian market were serenaded by this trio today. the market was busy as people searched for gifts or finishing touches for their holiday meals. there was even a line outside dibruno brothers where they were know doubt selling lots of those delicious gift baskets filled with all sorts of cheeses. >> wow getting hungry. for one shop in italian market this is a bittersweet holiday season. after more than a hundred

years it's closing its doors. d'angelo brothers butcher on ninth street is going out of business because the third generation owner sunny d'angelo is retiring. d'angelo brothers opened back in 1910 and along with cuts of more traditional meat the shop has specialized in exotic meats like rabbit antelope and reindeer. sunny today. local says he's going miss the business but it's time. >> it's been a major part of my life for a long time. >> what are you going do when you retire? >> rest. >> the shop's last day will be new year's eve. shoppers are lucking out with today's weather. of course if you are hoping for a white christmas, you're out of luck. let's head over to meteorologist melissa magee with our first look at the accuweather forecast on this christmas eve eve tonight. hi, melissa. >> hi rick. certainly not bad across the area. the high today in philadelphia 46 degrees. right now still mild in at 43. that's our average high for this team of year. 33 in the poconos. 40 at the coast in cape may and 41 out to the west in

lancaster. we've got some changes headed our way just in time for the holiday weekend. here's storm tracker6 live double scan radar 3-d. you can see the moisture with the snow across the northern plains, even some rain across the great lakes. this hm work its way eastward well after midnight tonight and for the start our weekend so future tracker six showing you by 7:30 in the morning, you notice the mixed precipitation well to the north and west of philadelphia but it is rain here along the i-95 corridor and areas in south jersey and delaware. but the concern will be north and west overnight tonight. national weather service has issued a freezing rain advisory at 1:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. this is mainly for northern bucks, lehigh, berks and up through the poconos. ice is a concern, slippery travel as well before you get that changeover to rain early tomorrow morning. so, increasing clouds on the way for the rest of tonight. it is wet for christmas eve but we're dry for santa as we get into christmas eve night and into christmas day. i'll have those details coming up in the full and exclusive accuweather forecast.

we'll send it back your way rick. >> melissa thank you. take 6abc.com and its 6abc mobile app whenever you go from storm tracker6 to the latest traffic information we've got you covered and follow our meteorologists on facebook and twitter for weather updates as well. >> in other news, we are learning more about the highjacking of a plane today in libya. the highjackers wanted to go to rome but ended up in malta because the plane was low on fuel. the flight was highjacked as it new to tripoli with more than 100 passengers and six crew members on board. the airline says the pilot was told the highjackers were armed and demanding he planned rome the highjacking ended peacefully a few hours later when the highjackers surrendered. it's still not clear how the highjackers managed to get the weapons on board. however, investigators in maltese are saying the weapons were replicas. investigators in australia say they foiled a series of attacks planned for the holidays. officials say the men were inspired by isis.

according to police, they were targeting a train station, a church and other spaces in melbourne. that's australia's second largest city. authorities believe the group had been planning the attack for three weeks. australia's prime minister called one of the most substantial lots in several years. >> suspect in the berlin christmas market attack has come to an end but the investigation far from over. anis amri was shot and killed this morning in milan italy during a gun battle with police. amri encountered officers on routine patrol outside of a train station there. and they say he pulled out a gun instead of his i.d. card. also today, isis released this video showing amri pledging allegiance to the group. it was taken in berlin near where he rammed his truck into a crowd killing 12 people. investigators are now working to figure out when amri left germany and how he crossed into iinto italy undetected.

>> that breaks from longstanding american policy of serving as israel's ally at the un. that allowed council to approve the resolution by a 14 to nothing vote claw greeted with loud applause. the resolution says israel's settlements on palestinian territory are not legal. the resolution also demands a halt to all israeli settlement activity. >> still to come on "action news" at 5:00 passenger concerns force a pilot to turn a flight around. why they thought there was a stowaway on board. >> plus, this little boy is smiling tonight because he's received the best holiday gift in the world. a forever family. we'll hear from his new mom about why this adoption was meant to be when "action news" continues tonight. fios in the house!

>> a canadian man was area rivered at orlando international airport this morning after commandeering a luggage cart and driving it across the run wage the man was supposed to be boarding a united airlines flight but he was acting belligerently and was denied access to the plane. he pushed past staff got onto the jetway punched an employee. he then walked ononto the

tarmac and took the luggage cart for a joyride. police caught up with him and then took him into custody. a united airlines flight had to make an emergency landing because of a strange noise. the plane was in the air for about an hour heading from texas to ecuador when passengers thought they heard a stowaway in the cargo hold. the pilot returned to houston where the airline determined the noise was being caused by a maintenance issue and not someone hiding out in the plane. all of the passengers were transferred to a different aircraft. >> a massive fire ripped through a florida hotel this morning forcing dozens of people from their hotel rooms. the fire broke out at the union no, sir boutique hotel in kissimmee. it started in an area of the hotel that was not occupied because of construction. it went to three alarms before firefighters were able to get it all under control. about 80 people were evacuated but no one was hurt. >> just in time for christmas a three-year-old boy has found his forever family.

>> meteorologist melissa magee is here now for a check of that holiday forecast. >> we're ready for the holiday weekend. >> we are ready. some of us have some shopping to do but a good day, good weekend to be hitting the stores. >> yeah, there's a little bit of wet weather early tomorrow so maybe you can wrap the gifts and then get out with that last minute shopping. >> gift bags. [laughter] >> put it in the bag. we'll show you what's going on with storm tracker6 live double scan radar. you can sigh it'you can see it'. we're tracking wet weather that moves through overnight and into the day on saturday for the start of the holiday. the high in philadelphia is certainly not bad. 46. right now we're coming in at 43 with that southerly wind. 41 degrees out to the west in lancaster and 40 degrees in cape may. here is satellite6 along with action radar. you can see we've got a fair amount of cloud cover across the region but there is some moisture out across the great lakes and the ohio valley. this heads our way overnight tonight and for the start of the day tomorrow. so, over the next 12 hours turning cloudy.

we're tracking that rain closer to dawn we'll bottom out at 32 in the suburbs for the overnight low and 35 degrees in philadelphia with that south to southwesterly wind. future tracker6 showing you 3 o'clock in the morning during the overnight hours in the lehigh valley up through the poconos there could be some mixed precipitation which is why the national weather service has issued that freezing rain advisory that goes up at 1:00 a.m. lasting right through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. some ice and slippery travel is expected but as you watch the time line here, by 8 o'clock in the morning any frozen precipitation quickly changes over to rain with that mild southwesterly wind overhead. in philadelphia south jersey and delaware this is all rain for you. by 2 o'clock in the afternoon, the moisture is starting to depart from a west-east direction and clouds breaking for some brighter skies late in the day tomorrow. so we'll talk about what we can expect overnight into christmas eve. precip arriving after midnight. brief mixing is likely in the lehigh valley up through the poconos. otherwise this is mainly rain for most locations and we are dry by early afternoon
