>> jennette reyes visited a south philadelphia new year's bash, she'll bring you that in the next half-hour. the mummers make their annual strut from city hall into south philadelphia today. the mummers parade steps off from center city at 9:00 a.m. many have been up all night putting on makeup and making adjustments to their lavish costumes. it was on this day in 1901 that first murmt walked off -- mummers parade walked off in philadelphia. bob brooks talked to some in the parade. >> reporter: the show this year. >> the phantom's

spectacle and wish for better times ahead. on security note, streets were blocked off by sanitation trucks, a move designed to prevent attacks similar to those in germany and france. overseas a manhunt is on for the disguised gunman who killed 39 people inside a nightclub in istanbul turkey. wmba players were next-door when it happened, everything is okay. >> reporter: turkey ushering in 2017 with a massive celebration, crowds in istanbul releasing white balloons into the night hopeful for the new year. security tight. but then a scene that's played out time and time again, a person who may have been dressed as santa claus walked into the nightclub one of the city's most popular and opened fire.

the attacker gunning down a police officer and civilian on the way in. istanbul governor calling it an attack of terror. the attacker rained down bullets in a crool and innocent way -- cruel and innocent way on people ringing in the new year having fun. many jumping into the water to escape. the shootings more than a year after bombings killed 45 people near the city's arena. earlier in the day a crowd gathering to remember the victims of that attack. president obama has expressed his condolences for the victims and directed his team to provide assistance to turkey authorities. abc news new york. >> "good morning america" weekend will have an update on the attack in turkey coming up at 8:00 a.m. after "action

news." new this morning, a 71-year-old military veteran was killed by a hit-and-run driver in philadelphia's olney section. police say he was dragged a full city block after being hit by a mercury on city avenue. the driver kept going until he crashed into a pole. the suspect suffered a broken leg and he will be charged. police have not released the name of the veteran who died. fires erupted on the 700 block of west dekalb pike in king of prussia. the fire started in the grease vents and spread to the roof. firefighters contained the blaze, nobody was injured, but the restaurant was closed for the rest of the night. a camden county store was damaged when a driver ran off the road and hit the building overnight. the driver of a jeep was

traveling south in collingswood and ran off haddon avenue. no word if charges will be filed. an he elderly man and woman were run over and killed in broomall. the vehicle stopped and police have yet to announce if that driver will be charged. gassing up in pennsylvania, now costs more, overnight the state gas tax jumped by 8 cent a gallon. it's up 11 cents for diesel. drivers are being taxed 57 gallons in pennsylvania. before the hike, pennsylvania already had the highest gas tax. it will pay for transportation projects. nationally, motorists are paying 30 cents more a gallon compared to a year ago. philadelphia's breferg tax is in effect -- beverage tax is

police officers. the sandy hook massacre in connecticut inspired the change in new jersey. all motorcycle riders in delaware could be required to wear a helmet. representative sean lynn of dover compares it to the seat belt law and calls it common sense. right now you're only required to carry a helmet on a motorcycle and those 19 years and younger are required to wear it. we'll be right back.

football national championship game is set and it is rematch. ohio state got destroyed by clemson, 31-0. the first time the buckeyes have been shut out in 23 years. clemson moves on to fight alabama. they meet in tampa on january 9. penn state is auto in california to play usc to play the rose bowl. you can see the game on our sister station espn. jeff skeverski has the rest of the sports. >> reporter: the eagles new year's resolution beat the cowboys new year's day and carry confidence into 2017. cowboys arrived in philadelphia where they have won four straight over the eagles. dallas starters are expected to be limited today at 1 against the eagles.

opportunities. the traditional fireworks show hit the skies over the delaware river in a colorful display to begin the new year. tropicana casino in atlantic city hosted this event. even with winter temperatures, the shore welcomes many families to enjoy the holiday weekend. in delaware, the action cam was at the river front in wilmington, this fireworks display was a family-friendly event that kicked off early. as part of celebration there was ice skating and live entertainment as well. now it is time for the comics and fancy and string bands to suit up for their stretch down broad street. the parade kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at city hall and heads south on broad street to washington avenue. ten thousand mummers will feet in five categories, fancy,

the money goes to road improvements and pension costs and the required $4,350,000,000 payment to the state department of transportation. new this morning, fire has gutted a large house in delaware county leaving 6 people homeless. the action cam was at the scene old forge road in middletown. the fire broke out at 1:00 a.m. and raced through the house. everybody got out safely. a firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor burn. there was no word on a cause. police are trying to sort out a violent confrontation outside a bar in river month. an intoxicated man was refused entry, he left and returned with a vehicle locking device and beat a security guard with it. the security guard suffered a punctured lung and was able to shoot the man who later died. here's the latest on the shooting death of pennsylvania

carolina. police a a woman was traveling 70 to 90 miles per hour when her car hit a curb and went into the air. nobody was hurt. police believe the driver had a medical emergency. california officials believe foggy conditions may have played a role in a deadly pileup this weekend. two people were killed in the 30-car pileup on interstate five near bakessers -- bakersfield. traffic was jammed for hours while crews cleared the scene. on august 21, the moon will completely block the sun. best of all it will be visible across the continental u.s., we have not had a total solar eclipse on the mainland u.s. since 1979. >> reporter: that's neat, i

degrees colder than this time yesterday. center city, 42, you're leading the pack. gandys beach, vineland, 39. cinnaminson, 41, smyrna and dover, 42. what we're seeing is a lot of moisture to develop across the southern tier states southern continental united states. an area of low pressure will form around the texas arkansas border. that will come up the spine. appalachians. with all the cold air out here, we'll see this over the next 448 to 72 hours. today is smooth sailing, we'll have bright blue skies, it will be that deep blue in the skies,

a nice looking day. overnight tonight we'll see the clouds increase south to north. 6:00 a.m. we'll stop the clock, the molds has nothing going on. some of the other forecast models suggest there could light precipitation falling at that point. 9:00 we'll see the rains overspread the area. they become heavier and steadier during the afternoon hours. this is followed by another round for tuesday. again, rain arriving by sunrise tomorrow, the heaviest appears to be late in the day. it could start as a period of freezing rain north and west of philadelphia. let's say in a line from upper bucks and montgomery county northwestward and berks and as far as lang -- lancaster county, as well. that will go over to plain rain as temperatures climb in the upper 40s. again, another round moves in on tuesday.
