[fireworks popping] thousands gathered to celebrate 2017 on the delaware river. this was the colorful show seen from the camden side. people were ready for 2017 to

arrive. >> happy new year! , whoa! >> you guys went out with the hats and glasses. >> absolutely why not it's 2017 baby. >> reporter: are you ready for the new year? >> absolutely my husband and family we're all in the mummers, we love it. jeanette reyes visited a south philadelphia new year's bash. we'll bring you that in the next half-hour. golden slippers are polished and ready to go for the a new year's day tradition. the mummers day parade steps off from center city at 9:00 a.m. many have been up all night making final adjustments to their costumes. it was on this day in 1901 when the first mummers parade was held in philadelphia. from that day forward it has been a family tradition providing a deep sense of pride for generations of performers and spectators.

bob brooks talked about the mummers about their moment in the spotlight. >> reporter: it is an impressive sight to see, 90 fancy in unison they look like a broadway show. there's a bill mcentire brigade. the convention center has transformed for the mummers show and preparation. >> the passion for this parade is unprecedented. >> reporter: scott said having dad with him makes ringing in the new year that much more special. >> mood dad, my two brothers, nephews my son there's nothing like it in the world. >> reporter: the mcentires say in all their years doing this, the show this year might be the best yet, they hope you come out and watch, reporting at the convention center, bob brooks, channel 6 "action news." >> hundreds of thousands of people watched the new year's ball make its time

square. emotion 1 million people washed ryan seacrest usher in the new year's eve. nearly 1 million people jammed streets and warmed up to red hot musical agents and -- musical acts and more. streets were blocked off with sanitation trucks to prevent attacks similar to those in germany and france. overnight the state gas tax jumped by 8 cents a gallon. it's up 11 cents for diesel. many are being taxed 58 cents per gallon. before the hike, pennsylvania had the highest gas tax in the country. extra revenue pays for transportation projects. nationally motorists are paying

30 cents more than a year ago. the philadelphia beverage tax is in effect. the new tax money is expected to help pay for universal pre-k goal. it may put tax into passion and the city library system. a court denied the claim that the tax dupe indicates the state state -- tax. new this morning, a 71-year-old army veteran was hit and killed in the olney section. police say he was dragged a full city block after being hit by a mercury marquee. the driver kept going an crashed into a pole where the street comes to a deadened. the suspect suffered a broken leg and he will be charged.

police have not released the name of the veteran who died. overseas there was no break from terrorism. a manhunt is on for disguised gunman who killed 39 people inside a nightclub in istanbul turkey. wmba players were next-door when the chaos erupted. they are okay. we have more on the attack. >> reporter: turkey ushering in 2017 with a massive celebration, crowds in istanbul releasing white balloons into the night and hopeful for the new year and security tight, but then a scene that's played out time and time again. a person who may have been dressed as santa claus walked into a popular nightclub and opened fire. the attacker gunning down a police officer and civilian on the way in. istanbul's governor calling it an act of terror. the attacker rained down bullet

in a cruel and merciless way on innocent people there to celebrate the new year and have fun. inside five hundred party goers dozens killed, scores injured, some survivors jumping into the river to escape. the shooting more than a year after bombings killed 45 people near the city's arena. earlier in the day, a crowd gathering 0 to remember victims of that attack. president obama has expressed his condolences for the victims and directed his team to provide assistance to turkish authorities. >> "good morning america" weekend will have more on the attack at 8:00 a.m. after "action news." new this morning, fire interrupted new year's eve celebrations at a popular montgomery county steakhouse. the action cam was on the scene as firefighters doused the

russian diplomats to leave the united states. president obama ordered them out of the country in retaliation for russian hacking efforts during the presidential election. the order included the shutting down of two lavish russian compounds in the u.s. putin said he will not retaliate. president-elect trump voiced doubts over the hacking despite the intelligence community

back everyone, 7:24 sunday morning, looks like a nice day, starting out with cloud cover, lots of sun, 1:00 p.m., 49. 3:00 p.m., 50. 5:00 p.m., wack down -- back down to 47. lots of buzz going around social media about the potential of a storm next weekend. here's what we're watching a pattern will change on thursday, it's an arctic high. there's the northern branch. jet stream. it hits the coast of the carolinas and the virginia capes. the question is will the high be too strong and bump it out to sea or will it give it ground and allow it to come up, if it comes up it is snowing friday and saturday of next weekend. i'm really leaning toward 70/30 with it heading out to sea as opposed to it coming up.

beautiful shot, the sunrising over cape may, new jersey. we're in for a rollercoaster ride in the weather department this week, so let's look no further than chris sowers for an accuweather update. good morning, chris. >> reporter: speaking of the rollercoaster road, we're going up, up, up and getting ready to look straight down. it will go downhill past today. today is a nice day, mild temperatures and sunshine, tuesday and wednesday a complete mess. pottstown, 38 degrees not too bad. quakertown, 38. warrington, 39. center city, 41. 40 in vineland and agenda beach. woodbine, 39 degrees. you'll need a heavier coat later on, you'll be able to ditch the gloves and hats and scarfs as temperatures climb close to 350.

illuminated the sky in a colorful fireworks display celebrating the new year. the tropicana casino in atlantic city hosted this event. in delaware, the action cam was at the riverfront in wilmington. this kicked off early as part of the celebration there was ice skating and live entertainment, as well. the last minute prep for the 118th mummers parade are history. now it's time for the comics and fancy and string bands to suit up for their traditional new year's day strut down broad street. moments ago, "action news" was inside the golden sunrise fancy division clubhouse in south philadelphia. the club's captain said he considers it an honor to lead the club in the parade. >> just find it exiting. it's a great way to welcome in the new year, it's a long philadelphia tradition and i am very proud to be a part of it.

leprechaun on richmond street. the man returned with a locking device and beat a security guard with it. the security guard suffered a punctured lung, he shot the man and he later died. investigators are trying to determine why state trooper landon weaver responded to a domestic incident on his own. 32-year-old jason robison gunned down the trooper in central pennsylvania. police killed him during a confrontation at a mobile home in juniata township. it will cost more to drive on the pennsylvania turnpike. another fare hike goes in effect next sunday january 8. the turnpike commission has raised tolls for nine straight years, the money goes to road improvements, pension costs and 450 million-dollar payment to

the state department of transportation. travel restrictions on some of the busiest roads in montgomery county. penndot will have lane closurese schuylkill expressway between city avenue and the pennsylvania turnpike. that work is scheduled to end thursday, january 5. drivers can expect lane closures on 309 between cheltenham avenue and welsh road and armand hammer boulevard tuesday through thursday. mayor jim kenny is winding down his first year in office. vernon odem pressed him on his challenges. >> reporter: mayor kenny flarbled -- flashed a sar -- car
