will show we have energy to the west in the ohio valley and that is some of the light snow pushing to the east and that energy transferred to a new low at the carolinas and heading out to sea and that is why we only get scraped by the precipitation in the next few hours. winter weather advisories begin at 8:00 and last until 6:00 in the morning for all the counties in purple. north of the pennsylvania turnpike there is no winter weather advisories, but this is where we see the bulk of snow this evening in the overhours. 34 degrees in philadelphia and 21 in pittsburgh, it's plenty cold. and windchill of 26 and 13 in pittsburgh and the snow comes with brutal cold for the up comes weekend as well. we are not looking at a lot of snow with this but still every flake will stick given how cold

it has been the last 24 hours, i'll bring in cecily tynan with the timeline we sped up and ends early as well. >> the system is it speeding up and the snow is breaking out from the west to the east from 6:00 tonight and 8:00 in the evening. it begins at light snow showers. the steadiest snow late tonight into the wee hours of the morning tomorrow. from 10:00 until 2:00 in the morning, the good news is. since it is moving in faster it will be moving out faster that snow is ending from the west to the east before day break before 6:00 and 8:00 in the morning and that gives road crews more time to clear the roads. as far as how much snow, this is not a major winter storm more of a nuisance event. look at the computer models, the highest is the new hampshire 12 inches and the lowest the euro .7 inches and could get

close to 3 inches for the coast. there could be a few slick spots watch "action news" beginning at 4:00 in the morning starting early at 6:00, 27 and 8:0029, it will be cold in the morning and stays cold and gets colder into the weekend, as far as the morning commute, the road impacted expect them minor for the main roads but moderate road impacted overpasses and driveways and sidewalks, could be icy and snow covered we'll talk about the possibility of snow for part of our region over the weekend coming up. the parks and streets department loaded up their salt trucks. crews describe this storm as a more of a nuisance situation, expect to have primary secondary roads cleared but want to caution drivers. >> we want motorists to take

roads and preparing the equipment and keeping an eye on the forecast. del/dot is prepared and so were most of the people we talked to about the season's first possible snow event. >> that is my husband's job my husband is the keeper of all things salt and snow and shovel related. he prepares like a mad man he is on it. >> what do you do to prepare? >> cry. if it's a lot of snow. at 71 years of age you don't want to bend over too much but i'm ready. >> at fairfax hardware it's business. >> i want it to come, i want to make sure i get here safe. >> workers have all the supplies necessary to deal with winter weather and shovel salt and a whole lot more. business was not booming when we showed up and that will change around 5:00 p.m. when people get off work. >> get it now while we have it

the morning commute. join matt, tam david and karen they start at 4:00 a.m. we are following breaking news out of northeast philadelphia and it is a wet and messy situation. a water main broke and that sent water rushing into the streets and into the yards of nearby residents, chopper 6 hd was over the scene along the 1100 block of mill brook road. this started at 2:00 this afternoon. there are reports of water in the basements of several homes there. philadelphia firefighters are on the scene, and the philadelphia water department says that it has turned the water off in that area as they look to repair that 16 inch water main and also figure out why it broke. >> now, to an "action news" exclusive. only our cameras were in delaware county as they looked for a missing woman. they went over the portion of the backyard with ground penetrating radar, heavy

equipment was called in to help with digging but the search came up empty handed. searchers are looking into the disappearance of melissa rodriguez, the mother of two young girls reported missing by her estranged husband in 2013. john rawlins has more coming up at 5:00 tonight. scammers posing at utility workers are on the run after forcing their way into a home in port richmond, they blindsided and robbed an elderly man who thought there was a gas leak if the area. vernon odom is live now with the details on this. >> reporter: good evening sharrie, they ruthlessly prey on the poor and elderly, an age old game and police know it well, crooks have passed it down through many generations. >> this is the victim of the home invasion, 87-year-old richard a former teacher at

relatives this hour and is physically okay. i'm vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> all right thank you. camden county officials say they are still investigating the sudden death of an 8-year-old girl. officialed say that a sibling called 911 to report that sailor rider's mother found her unresponsive and not breathing in their stratford home. sailor was rushed to kennedy hospital on new years eve where she was pronounced dead. prosecutors declined to release rider's cause of death. she was the daughter of a stratford police officer. and smoke was pouring out of an apartment complex this morning. the fire started in a unit on the fourth floor of the building and everyone was safely evacuated and no injuries in the course of this ordeal. >> up next on "action news" today charges are filed in a

down on capitol hill today. >> a lot to digest and a lot to come on that. four people are now facing charges for a disturbing hate crime in chicago and we want to warn you the imaged you are about to see are difficult to watch. the four suspects that are black beat up a young white man and broadcast the beating live on facebook. the 19-year-old with mental challenges was held captive and tortured for two days, beaten and bound and cut with a night and the suspects two men and two women are charged with felony crimes including aggravated kidnapping and battery. the parent company of sears and kmart are shutting down 650 stores nationwide. the day after macy's said they are closing locations across the country. three kmarts are the only local stores being impacted. the company lists the locations

in flemming ton and rio grande. and here is a look at today's stocks of course in the u.s. the dow today closing down more than 42 points and the nasdaq up more than 10 points on the day and the s&p closing marginally down 2 points. philadelphia's african-american museum is planning a special tribute to martin luther king. the museum was given $25,000 for the celebration including four days of fun events. it end ways scavenger hunt insized the museum. and some tickets will be given to community groups and others will be given a discount. the piano man is coming back to the stage in philadelphia. billy joel will put on a show saturday september 9th. this is the fourth year in a row that joel has performed at the ballpark.

today the philadelphia phillies raised a banner as a tribute to his many soldout concerts. >> love that guy. the reason i took piano lessons as a kid. still no good though. adam joseph is standing by with the accuweather forecast. we are talking snow in the new year here. >> in the next few hours we look at stormtracker 6 live double scan a little bit of gray on the radar, either side of wilmington here, this is what we call virga, precipitation that evaporates before it hits the ground, the air is cold and dry and the snowflakes evaporate as they moisten the lower atmosphere and we'll see the flangs falling in the next few hours. live on sky 6 hd in wilmington delaware, you see kind of shake to the camera here with some of those colder winds and the clouds are in play and 95 looking good and overall no flakes falling at the present

time. windchills though they are down there in the 20s across the board. 22 allentown and 27 in dove and below freezing in millville sitting at 30 degrees and lancaster, 22 all the surfaces are plenty cold and once the snow falls it's not going to melt and sticking on untreated surfaces to the west and the snow is breaking out and wait until you get the brighter white colors, what will happen is we see it filling in working to the southwest and north and east. energy passes through our region and transfers it to a new low off the coast. at 11:00 tonight, that is when steadier snow falls from trenton, philadelphia and wilmington and back to reading and lancaster. southern areas you may wait longner that area, and lehigh valley to the poconos kind of on the brisk of not much happening you'll get some snow showers out of this. but by 2:00 in the morning when most of us are asleep. that is when the steadiest round of snow is passing through and

then by 6:00 in the morning, at this point because the timing has changed a little bit. it's a good thing because when the morning rush starts the snow will have stopped falling for an hour or two off the coast and even breaks of sun to the north and west however the a slow process to clear the sidewalks and side streets but by 9:00 we are blasted by sunshine around here midmorning on friday. so expected snow during the overnight hours, a general 1 to 3 inches for the heart of the delaware valley, wilmington and trenton and reading and lancaster, allentown to the poconos a coating of inch there. kind of an i-95 special here with the 1 to 3 inches. temperatures tomorrow on friday with the sunshine coming back into play, biel get just above the freezing point but with the breeze temperatures only stay in the 20s. as we look at the four day at 4:00 forecast, partly sunny tomorrow and cold again and good timing to get the snow out of

"action news" continues with adam joseph, sharrie williams and brian taff. >> it is 4:30 and "action news" continues with a look at the theme that is coming our way this the snow in louisville kentucky as steady flakes fell this afternoon and in just a few hours the snow is hitting our region. yes, that system is in our future. we continue to track the snow as it gets closer. the timing of the storm is somewhat in our favor because the heaviest of the snow will hit when most people are asleep. lets head outside for a live look at sky 6 hd giving us the view of atlantic city. the shore is expected to get the most snow in our area, so if you are down there, of course, use extra caution. and another live look showing downtown wilmington no flakes just yet.

stormtracker 6 live double scan keeping an eye on effect for us and adam joseph has details at the acts big board. it's coming and there is no stopping it. the winter weather advisories are stretching from kentucky and tennessee and the ohio valley. and they head into parts of the mid-atlantic, only a fraction here under winter weather advisories and this is weak energy over the ohio valley with light snow that moves its energy to a low off the carolinas and not hugging the coast it only then would we see many and several inches of snow. it will head out to sea and kind of a brush as it passes by. but nonetheless things are deteriorating as we go through the late evening hours, the impact scale if you are traveling around and if you especially have the midnight shift, those folks are the ones that kind of have to venture out in that snowfall. 8:00 low on the scale despite

snow will start to break out between 11:00 and 2:00 a.m. that is when the heart. system passes through the heaviest snowfall and then by 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 in the morning the snow stops and the impact scale goes back to moderate and by 7:00 in the morning with the rush the snow will be long gone from falling and more of the cleaning up process by that time. behind the system a lot of cold air lurking, bismark 20 below and chicago 3 below we are talking about windchills pushing in with cold air on top of that fresh snowfall on the ground. so weekend temperatures and high temperatures only in the 20s, that is not including the windchill and another shot at snow for the upcoming weekend for some of our area and we'll talk about 50s, highs in the 50s just down the road. a lot to go over here in the full accuweather forecast in just a little bit. >> thank you. and the road crews across our region are getting ready for the snow here in newport, del/dot

rushing into several houses that is where we find dann cuellar, what is the latest there? >> reporter: brian the water supply is shut off to the 16 inch water main that broke but there is stillwater flowing out of the pipe, apparently the water left in the pipe is making its way out here on to the street but not before the damage was done to six or seven properties, behind me there is mud and water that made its way into several homes and garage and doors several of these reads telling us there are several inches of water in their base manies. chopper 6 hd was over the scene shortly after this happened at 2:00 this afternoon and thousands of gallons of water that spewed out the street and the block of mill brook was under water and the water made its way into the basements and some of us saw it coming out the

back. some say as many as 6 inches of water in his base many damaging his heating and refrigerator and he had to turn his gas off to avoid other problems. >> about three foot of water in the basement, everything is floating and lucky she didn't have much down there except for washer and dryer. >> now, residents are telling us that since may a large steel plate you see there covering the area where the 6 inch main was broke was placed there by the philadelphia water department and put it there because there was some kind of leak and they were trying to figure it out. but now apparently not in time to avoid this catastrophe. that is what we have here in the 11,000 block of mill brook. six or seven property owners not happy now.

channel 6 "action news" back to you guys. >> quite the mess thank you. >> a woman convicted of killing her son who was 5 years old in new jersey in 1991 is sentenced to 30 years in prison. she is from middlesex county but was captured in florida, during her sentencing the judge told her she repeatedly lied about the disappearance and death about her son. she first said her son disappeared from a carnival in central new jersey and later claimed he was abducted and charged in 2014 after witnesses identified the blanket found near the boy's body nearly a year after his disappearance. a philadelphia business was ransacked by an intruder after closing for the day. this is video of the burglar that broke into the beauty salon on the 400 block of north fifth street in olney, they believe that the man pried of a side

door on december 27th, on top of the other damage they broke open a safe and got away with cash. if you know who this man is, give philadelphia police a call. >> a 23-year-old pennsylvania trooper, killed in the line of duty was laid to rest today. dozens of law enforcement officers lined up for trooper landon weaver's funeral at the convenience center. weaver was shot to death responding to a domestic call last week. police shot and killed the gunman during a standoff. he has spent more than three decades serving and working at the same university and today he was named its new leader. he is the new president of westchester university. the board of governors with the pennsylvania state system of higher education made the appointment today. fartino joined the staff back in 1983 and made his way up the ladder. he is the university 15th

bassinet. >> thank you alicia. lets get a check of the roads right now. gina is standing by with the latest. >> hello right now we are not seeing delays that are too significant, lets take a look at the big picture. 52 miles per hour on 95 and 36 on the northbound side near allegheny, so things could be a whole lot worse. on the schuylkill expressway 12 miles per hour westbound approaching city avenue and 15 approaching montgomery drive. 76 right at montgomery drive we see a pretty solid eastbound delay although travel times not that bad. 23 minutes between the blue route and vine and just about 24 on the westbound side. in northeast philadelphia we have the water main break on mill brook road at greenmont road. the best bet around that is knights road and staying in northeast philadelphia a crash on devereux avenue at rising son

are excited. the kids get out of school and do your homework tonight and when you get out of school tomorrow afternoon you can play in the snow. you get my hint. do your homework. as we take a look right now, double scan live radar we see some of that precipitation kind of blossom a little more just than a half hour ago. especially south and west of philadelphia. northern newcastle county and chester county and delaware county. could be a couple of flakes now falling here around chadds ford and salem on the brisk of middletown and all of this will continue to filter in and kind of fill in so to speak as it heads to the north on east and the steadiest of the snow is not expected until 9:00 to 11:00. temperature-wise right around freeing in wilmington and lancaster and reading and 34 for philadelphia and millville and the poconos your temperature just 22 degrees, it is a round of atmospheric energy passing
