santiago was honorably discharged from the army national guard last year. >> airports across the drain are on high alert including philadelphia international airport and that's where "action news" reporter dann cuellar will s standing by live with the latest from there. >> rick with no flights coming in or out of fort lauderdale, the ripple effect has begun. a number of flight cancellations and delays already being reported. the deadly day in florida has left many air travelers here stunned. with the situation in fort lauderdale still unfolding, police and their federal partners have beefed up security here at philadelphia international airport. this as a precautionary measure. air travelers were reacting to the terrible tragedy. >> kind of stunned because i wouldn't think it happens in florida the way security is now but, you know, it's something well got to be cognizant of wherever you travel to. >> i mean, it just kind of one of those things that it just

keeps happening. it's sad and it's a tragedy and i'm very sorry for the people who lost their lives. >> i'm just happy i went to orlando and i wasn't in fort lauderdale 'cause i like read then said everybody was just being evacuated and people were running and i don't know what i would do in a situation like that. just scary. >> reporter: and it would seem inevitable that a situation like this would make some people jittery about flying. >> oh, my god. it's kind of scares me. like now we're going to florida in february, so we're not going to fly. i'd rather drive. the incident at fort lauderdale's hollywood international happened in the baggage area which like most airports including philadelphia international airport, is outside the secure area. there has some wondering in maybe we need to rethink security in baggage areas as well. >> anybody can just walk in. i think it's funny that they don't have something set up where they scan people coming in, you know, 'cause now you have to -- i guess you're

of this snow on double scan radar for us at the big board. hi cecily. >> hi, mon can rick. last night's storm was limited in moisture. well, this is the next storm system and this one is loaded with moisture. we have kind of conveyor belt of rain, ice and snow from the deep south up top virginia where the snow is falling right now. there's low pressure across the gulf of mexico. it essentially heads over the carolinas and then kind of hugs the coast as it moves up to the north and east, so it will be off shore but we get a glancing blow and areas around the coast will get hit the hardest. winter storm warnings are posted for all the counties really neighboring the coast from early tomorrow morning through about 6 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and then winter weather advisories extending up towards the i-95 corridor. this is a storm that's really all about location. future tracker showing that snow shield will expand as the storm moves off shore. by 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, we do have that snow falling right up to about the

pennsylvanipennsylvania turnpikt again that steady heaviest snow will be confined to the coast and then that storm system will wind down during the evening. so, future tracker showing that we're really missing out on the worst of this storm. this will be a crippling snowstorm near norfolk virginia beach blizzard warnings more than a foot of snow expectd there. details on the time line coming up monica. >> a food delivery driver shot by two philadelphia police officers in plainclothes will now get a multi-million dollar set. "action news" reporter vernon odom live at 51st and willis avenue in west philadelphia where the shooting happened three years ago. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, monica. this was indeed a tragedy here in the 5100 block of willis in southwest philadelphia. the settlement itself is being ballyhood as the biggest of its type in the history of the city of philadelphia is that generating new rules and

reforreforms. multiple shots, multiple shots. >> reporter: police radioed from 10 o'clock tonight on april 22nd 2014. two undercover officers had just fired 14 shots at a moving car. this ford taurus. three times they hit this man, 20-year-old college student and food delivery man philippe holland who just delivered a cheeseburger to a home on that block. holland was hit in the face and suffers from brain damage generating permanent seizures and other injuries as a result. the cops were responding to reports of shots fired but philip holland was an innocent man trying to flee thinking the plainclothes officers were there to rob him. >> these police officers did not identify themselves not only on this mr. holland says so but three independent witnesses say that they never identified themselves. >> reporter: holland's family lawyer displayed the bullet riddled car today as he

announced a record breaking settlement with the city for assault and battery by the two officers. nearly four and a half million dollars. >> 14 shots that this car took, innocent citizen terrific young man trying to make a few bucks delivering a burger. >> reporter: as a result of the holland suit the police department has agreed to establish new procedures for plainclothes officers including a tire and display of badges and identifying themselves as officers right away. >> his car ends up crashing. he ends up terribly injured and suffers the consequences to this day and for the rest of his life. >> reporter: rick, philippe holland and his family have moved out of the city of philadelphia to another city and they were not available for comment today. live in southwest philadelphia, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right vernon thank you. icy road conditions may be

to blame for a car crashing into a ditch this morning. chopper6 was over the scene on main street in limerick montgomery county. officials say the driver was trapped inside the vehicle for a time. still not clear how badly he was hurt. in the lehigh valley, the winter weather was a welcome sight for skiers and snow borders this morning. "action news" reporter john rawlins spent the day at bear creek mountain resort in macungie and he's live with more on the excitement on the slopes. did you hit the slopes, john? i bet you did, didn't you? >> reporter: i did not, rick. i'll tell if you, subfreezing temperatures and snow may not make the top of many people's wish lists. they don't make the top of mine but for skiers they are perfect conditions. >> it's something to do, you know, it's exercise, it's fresh air. >> reporter:. >> you have to exercise so why not do something that's fun. >> reporter: at 27 degrees. some of us might look for fun indoors but an estimated 900 people found fun on the snowy slopes of bear creek mountain resort today. this season already different

than last year when a warm december meant literally green slopes forcing the resort to miss the christmas-new year's period. >> last season we didn't open until the seventh. this year we opened december 27th. >> reporter: this year's subfreezing nights good for snow making most weekends the hotel are said to be booked already. the place is busy inside and out with skiers of all ages. 80-year-old joe tweet says he still gets a rush going downhill. >> it's fun. you got to keep moving. if you stop moving it's the end. you got to keep moving. >> reporter: benjamin sears agrees. his favorite thing. >> the jumps. >> reporter: the jumps. at age four this is benjamin's second year on the slopes says his dad. >> he's going to that to bottom now without any help. he lovers it. >> reporter: he's four years old.

suspects contacted the victim's mother during the ordeal seeking $300. all the suspects are now facing a long list of charges including a hate crime. it is official. today congress certified donald trump's presidential victory. vice president joe biden presided over the electoral college count. trump finished with 304 electoral votes hillary clinton the democrat got 227. trump and mike pence will be sworn in two weeks from now on january 20th. >> president barack obama is challenging republicans to release details about their plans for replacing his signature hell law. the president said he's open to new ideas but doubts the republicans can come with a better plan. he said he would only support a republican plan if it contains the protections such as barring insurance companies from withholding coverage for americans with preexisting conditions. >> first lady michelle obama got emotional today as she made her final white house

provider before trying something new but we have more information about sculpt fitness on 6abc.com. rick and monica, back to you. >> terrific. >> all right. >> thank you ali. >> time for a check of the accuweather forecast and more snow on the way for us this weekend. >> that's right. meteorologist cecily tynan here with the very latest. >> hi monica and rick. we're live on sky6 taking a look in atlantic city and this is one of the areas that will get hit the hardest this weekend. the clouds are in place, it's cold out there, the moisture will be moving in there early tomorrow morning. temperatures though struggling to hit the freezing mark. 31 degrees in philadelphia right now. allentown 27. wilmington 28. cape may 32. and millville 30 and temperatures over the weekend-likely won't even get that high. satellite6 along with action radar showing you can see this ribbon of moisture moving up from the deep south. that is the developing coastal storm that will kind of bring us a glancing blow on saturday. so, future tracker showing the timing of the snow.

4 o'clock in the morning beginning to seat northern edge of that snow approaching the coast and then it moves inland. by 8 o'clock in the morning it's snowing east of the i-95 corridor and areas to the south. by noon, it's up across the northwest suburbs and then it will begin to shift back up to the coast by about 5:30 in the evening. so, expected snow really shows that it depends on where you are. northwest of philadelphia coating to an inch. interior south jersey, new castle county, kent county, one to 3 inches. along the coast, though, this is where you will see the significant snow, three to 6 inches. i wouldn't be surprised if a few isolated areas get a little bit more than. that all depends on the track. all of us, though, will be dealing with this, the wind chills. tomorrow afternoon wind chills in the teens and single digits and the core of that cold air on sunday morning. 7:30 in the morning, it will feel like five in philadelphia, 2 degrees below zero in reading. if you're heading up to the poconos to go skiing, i'll see

you in the lodge. the wind chill sunday morning at 7:30, 8 degrees below zero. it's going to be brutal. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow that snow will be falling again generally i-95 areas southeast. the coast will get hit the hardest three to 6 inches of snow there. the afternoon high not even hitting 30. 29 degrees. and then the winds really pick up. so, sunday the toughest day as far as temperatures. 28 degrees. wind chills even in the afternoon stuck in the teens. bitter cold. monday just as cold but the winds won't be quite as strong. so not quite as brutal on monday. 29 degrees. on tuesday, it clouds up, 39 degrees. a warm front will move in. that could bring us a bit of snow shower flurry activity late in the day. not looking to be a big event because this storm system will be cutting to the west. what that means on wednesday it pulls up some very mild air. the high soaring up to 55 degrees but that comes at a price with some rain. wednesday will be wet, not

>> here's what's happening on "action news" tonight chaos and confusion in the fort lauderdale airport today when a gunman opened fire on a crowd of people. we have new details on that investigation. also developing the intelligence report on russia's hacking activity shows that it did try to influence the presidential election. what officials also found. and we are tracking another potential snowstorm that will impact your weekend. meteorologist adam joseph with details. >> right now we begin this half hour with continuing coverage of the breaking news story from fort lauderdale where a gunman opened fire inside of the fort lauderdale hollywood international airport several hours ago. >> we now know that the alleged shooter who was carrying a military i.d. with the name esteban santiago is being questioned by the fbi. sources say he was on the fbi's radar before today's incident and had received

mental health treatment. he did travel from alaska with the gun in his checked luggage. >> it was a scene of absolute chaos near the baggage claim in terminal two. witnesses say the gunman opened fire at random with a handgun. >> passengers visitors and employees ran for cover. one employee posted a video here showing her coworkers barricading a door. another woman today told a were. c anchor david muir exactly what it was like. >> i was behind the kiosk. high a perfect picture of him coming and walking up and down shooting at people. i mean, i just can't believe that that was possible. >> witnesses say when the gunman ran out of ammunition he simply laid down on the ground with his hands out and then was taken into custody. 13 people were shot, five of them died from their wounds. eight others were taken to the hospital for treatment. hundreds of passengers were evacuated onto the tarmac until they could safely be taken to another location. now as soon as the situation

began to unfold at fort lauderdale airport, passengers flooded social media with photos, videos and messages to loved ones to letter them know they were okay. >> leash vitter a live at the "action news" big board with more on that part of the story. alicia. >> rick and monica, through tragedy and chaos people live through the lens and they document their survival on social media and today in this harrowing scary and active scene in fort lauderdale once again that was the case. herbie posted this video on facebook. he was picking up a friend at the airport and captured the scene as you can see law enforcement with their guns drawn, passengers lying on the ground and now this picture from maxwell solutions posted on twitter. pretty hard to fathom ton look at. he writes this guy is bleeding profusely and speaks to the fact that others have also been shot at the airport. people taking to all different forms of social media to share their firsthand accounts. jean messina posted this video

he continued to insist that russia's hacking had no effect on the outcome of the election. and world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the unclassified russia hacking report as well as fort lauderdale's airport shooting including the latest on the investigation. you can watch all of that following "action news" at six ooh. >> meanwhile the first snowfall of 2017 is now in the books and it gave our region a few inches of snow overnight but now accuweather is tracking a storm that could bring more snow this weekends especially at the jersey shore. >> and meteorologist adam joseph joins us now with all the details. hi, adam. >> it's all about location and southern areas will get the most snow out of the system on saturday. looking at storm tracker6 live with all the winter weather advisories, winter storm watches which extend into parts of mississippi all the way through atlanta charlotte blizzard warnings for virginia beach and this extends into parts of our area, the southern shore and then clips southern parts of new england where some areas will get over a foot of snow out of this storm. you can see all the moisture

pulling out of the gulf of mexico and there you can see in mississippi even parts of louisiana seeing some freezing rain and sleet, snow just north of jackson, mississippi and all of this will be heading to the north and east developing yet another storm off of the carolinas. so, for us locally, when it will snow, no snow expected lehigh valley, i-78, corridor up into the poconos. unfortunately poconos missing this go round. the i-95 metro area right on the border of i-95 if you're even 20's miles to the north and west you'll see tomorrow between about 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. so it's a six-hour time frame of some snow along i-95 but central delaware, southern delaware, southeastern new jersey especially along the shore, we're looking at a good 12 hours of snow from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on saturday. we'll take a look at those totals talk about the brutal winds over the weekend with wind chills and a big warmup also guys in that seven-day forecast. >> all right, thank you sir. philadelphia along with many communities across the region is under a code blue.

center city. these are the two suspects running from the scene. they attempted robbery happened monday evening about 6:00 p.m. in the 1700 block of walnut street. investigators say two 15-year-old girls were approached from behind by the two men. one of the men grabbed one of the girls while the other grabbed her purse. she managed the hang onto her purse causing the suspects to run away. a new jersey transit bus collided with a pickup truck in mount holly this afternoon. chopper6 over the scene as both vehicles were load onto tow trucks. it happened in the 3800 block of pine street. we're told there were injuries but the extent is unknown. investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened. >> habitat for humanity in delaware needs volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help build several new homes. the nonprofit says they're having a difficult time finding volunteers because it's winter. that means construction on 14 new homes at the walnut ridge site in wilmington could be delayed. the nonprofit wants volunteers to know that they can help do

>> old christmas trees becoming new sand dunes tonight in one new jersey beach town it's a program to use discarded trees to build up the sand barrier for future storms. as nora muchanic reports it's a story of people helping mother nature help herselfism it's that time of year when people hall christmas trees to the curb but instead of trashing them residents of midway beach in south seaside park are collecting discarded trees to help build new dunes. >> it works when we have coastal storm pushing the sand around. the trees act as a barrier to the winds and trap the sandism this is wait looks like when it's actually happening. dominic is the founder of the nonprofit coastal conservation organization called shifting sands. for several years now local residents have been bringing their old trees to the peach beach where volunteers line hundreds of them up end to end. then over the winter mother nature does the rest. >> this tree was placed this time last year and it's been since buried so you're looking

at an elevation of 2 feet in this specific area. >> reporter: see that post sticking out of the ground? it's the top of a storm sense like this that's now covered over. >> we've raised this probably about 6 feet from where it was post sandy. >> some of our dunes are over 25 feet. >> reporter: the idea isn't new but it works. in coastal communities across the country christmas trees are creating protective barriers in limit beach erosion during bad storms. >> you can have one event where you can get two, 3 feet of sand in one episode. when the wind is over 50 miles an hour that's when it all comes together. >> reporter: in the past, the town in north jersey would truck its discarded trees down midway beach but the dunes here are doing so well, that's no longer needed. he says this year they'll justing collecting trees from local. knowing that the old trees will help build new dunes it's kind of a gift that keeps on giving. >> it's a cheap resource it's kind of flee a sense, waste and you're repurposing it for a better tomorrow hopefully.

especially for our southern areas. wind chills right now 19 allentown, 16 in reading, 16 in lancaster, 19 in wilmington. only low 20's philadelphia to millville and right along the shore it's an upper 20's to around 33 degrees. satellite and radar we do have some some of that moisture lurking down to the south but you can see the clouds spilling back in. this precipitation not reaching the ground just yet in virginia but that will in the near future as we go in the next couple of hours and as we head to the south, you can see this pipeline of moisture all the way down the gulf coast states to new orleans and eastern parts of texas and jackson mississippi, a little mixed precipitation now going over to some snow, so you can see how the cold air is really being pulled into this system deep in the south. so, for tonight clouds thicken up, the snow develops very late in southern areas. we're talking around 3, 4 o'clock in the morning. 18 in those northwestern suburbs tonight, 23 degrees for center city. future tracker at 4 o'clock in the morning, there you see the first flakes falling near wildwood, cape may, sussex

county, in delaware. then it lifts to the north here but it's eventually going to put on the brakes in those northwestern suburbs and not reach the lehigh valley. so, 8 o'clock in the morning, some snow falling near trenton, philadelphia, wilmington. snowing heavily at times with the winds picking up along the shore. 1 o'clock in the afternoon bands of heavy snow southern and central new jersey, southern and central delaware. again, those northwestern suburbs if you're along that pennsylvania turnpike to the north you may not see a flake during the day tomorrow and then everything lifts away as we get into the afternoon hours. this is 5 o'clock on saturday. so again those higher totals will be along the shore sussex county delaware, through atlantic county southern burlington county ocean county southern parts of cumberland county cape may county three to 6 inches. one to 3 inches in this blue which is central northern delaware and most of our counties in new jersey and then philadelphia to the north and west just a coating to an inch near pottstown quakertown, downingtown. philadelphia maybe an inch,

inch and a half. high as 2-inches possible and those higher totals again confined to the shore. if you're right along the immediate shore line near 6-inches with isolated 7-inches in spots. dangerous travel down the shore because not only are you going to have a half a foot of snow falling possibly winds will be near 30 miles an hour creating dangerous travel and with the light fluffy nature to the snow you'll get blowing snow and the wind chills only near 10 degrees. we do not get out of the 20's saturday, sunday, monday. that snow again some of those northwestern suburbs of philadelphia by 15, 20 miles all the way to the coast. then sunday it's bitter, windy, wind chills do not get out of the teens on sunday for everyone. sunny but cold, less winter wind monday. warm front tuesday with a lot of clouds, some on and off rain wednesday, 55 and it stays very mild at the end of next week, thursday looks dry,

and lay spread eagle as a sheriff's deputy apprehended him without firing a shot. okay. here we go. let's backtrack for just a second. now, the gunman is in custody. these are passengers that are being taken to other parts of the airport after the shooting happened in terminal two. and this is the baggage claim area. this is just before 1 o'clock this afternoon. this is just after the shooting. as i said before, the gunman fell to the ground, lay spread eagle as a sheriff's deputy apprehended him without firing a shot. police then cleared the terminals herding everybody onto the tarmac then the perimeter of the airport. armed officers proceeded to check all locates of the property with a great sense of urgency even though the gunman was in custody. authorities say the man identified as esteban santiago originally from union city, new jersey, that's north
