temperatures gripping the area keeping the snie -- the snow and ice outside. >> if you head out keep in mind there are slick spots out there. with the dangerous cold it's a good idea to check on elderly family members and neighbors. >> slow down on the roads. the brutal cold is not helping people to try to clear snow we got yesterday. "action news" caught up with city workers in wilmington as they cleared the streets and sidewalks. >> the plows were out in pennsauken, as accuweather predicted the storm hit sections of south jersey the hardest. >> the philadelphia suburbs got enough snow for kids to go sledding. that's all they want on a slow down on a snow day at upper moreland high school.

our meteorologists on facebook and twitter. >> 6:03 if you're just waking up with us. we're following breaking developments in the murder of a montgomery county teenager grace packer. prosecutors charged the 44-year-old boyfriend of the teen at mother, with kidnap rape and murder. jacob as you sullivan was chargh the murder. sullivan and sara packer, the mother of the 14-year-old victim conspired to kill the teenager for money. >> essence, jay could be sullivan conspired with grace's mother to kidnap rape and murder and that's what jay could be sullivan has been charged with doing. >> sara packer reported her adopted daughter missing on july 9. investigators say she did that knowing full well the teenager was murdered the day before. in late october, grace packer's

dismembered body was found in bear creek township. >> we have evidence to conclude this was a rape, murder, fantasy that was shared by jacob sullivan and sara packer. they made it into a horrible gruesome reality. >> the mother has not yet been charged with murder, but weintraub said they will develop that part of the case. 70 people spent the night in a shelter because of a fast-moving fire in camden county. the fire left the apartment buildings in ruins. firefighters did not have an easy time putting out the flames

there. jeanette reyes explains. >> reporter: camden county crews battle tdz -- battled the blaze in government township at lake view apartments. the fire went from one to three-alarms as flames engulfed the entire building. a gas leak was feeding tense flames. i walked out, the roof from my apartment across the parking lot was on fire with a giant hole in it. >> reporter: when were you thinking when you saw that. >> scared, wondering how much it was going to spread if i need to get out of the buildings or not. >> reporter: there were initial reports by authorities of residents trapped inside, but firefighters were able to rescue them. residents in nearby buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure, those displaced by the fire many

pileup in 21 vehicles in connecticut this weekend. interstate 91 was closed for nearly 6 hours following a wreck involving three tractor-trailers and a tanker truck. crews from the environmental protection were called in to clean up diesel fuel. there were no injuries in the pileup. >> now the big cleanup around town. >> reporter: one of the biggest problems i had coming into work, obviously the back roads with icy patches. freezing windshield. the temperatures are cold out there. let's get you outside show you what's going on, spring mountain, plenty cold enough for snow making that is. the skiers will have a fun time of it over the next few days, especially today and tomorrow with the high temperatures not getting out of the mid 20s and overnight lows in the single

>> reporter: welcome back everyone, 6:23 a.m., mays landing. 8 inches of fresh powder. dover, 5.4. collingdale in pennsylvania, four inches of snow. what happened was as we were tracking the storm during the course of the week. here's philadelphia right here, the storm initially looked like it was going told one of these and head out, just brushing the area with maybe a coating to an inch or two, didn't look like that big of a deal. during the week it started lifting farther to the north an got to a position right about like that yesterday afternoon, you can see where we started monday or tuesday and where the storm finished yesterday afternoon. obviously the storm was closer, that meant more snow for us, part of the reason we saw more

han is off, alicia vitarelli is here. chris sowers joins us with the accuweather forecast. chris no snow this morning. >> it is cold. >> reporter: that's the big story, some of the coldest air we've seen so far this season, at least in terms of temperatures, windchills are not as cold as earlier, nonetheless it is cold out there. let's flip it over to the windchills and show you what it feels like. 10 below in the poconos. 1 below in wilmington. one degree in millville. that's what it feels like down there, with close to 7 inches on the ground. 19 in cape may. feels like five degrees presently in trenton. satellite and radar that storm yesterday is long gone at this point. it is up in the canadian maritimes. what we'll see on the backside, winds will switch or wrap around out of the northwest, the wind will be out in this direction today. that could push clouds in later

this afternoon, perhaps a quick flurry or snow shower north and west, later on. in the city points south and east in the state of delaware, this is what it is looking like today. it's going to be cold. 24, 25 degrees. feels-like temperatures hanging out in the single digits or low teens. with the winds it will not even feel like 25 degrees. there's a chance of a flurry later on north and west. when i come back we're talking about a huge warmup in the seven-day forecast. gray i know it makes you happy. >> it does indeed. 6:32 a.m. firefighters had to battle the bitter cold and a gas explosion at a south jersey apartment complex. it happened last night. i want to show you viewer video of the fire at the lake view apartments. the complex is along the 500 block of lower landing road in gloucester township. crews were fighting the fire

when the gas line ruptured. are you okay? >> one of the firefighters just got knocked out. >> reporter: an intense scene there, the good news in this one, the firefighter is okay, everyone managed to get out of that building safely, investigators say the fire started in the third floor bedroom. there's no word on the cause, red cross finding temporary shelter for the residents. >> two people are recovering from smoke inhalation after they escaped a burning home in somerdale camden county. firefighters got to the 100 block of east somerdale avenue around 4:45. flames were coming from the second floor when they got to the scene. crews called in additional help to get the fire under control. the fire victims, the husband and wife are expected to be okay. this morning we're talking about the snow and ice and the severe cold.

"action news" was in bucks county as people got out before the temperatures plummeted. >> feels like the single digits if you have to head out. >> the sound of snow blowers could be heard across the region. dell dot worked through the night in wilmington to remove the snow from the streets and sidewalks. we found little ones who happenly held mom clear the snow from her car, good work you guys, and, of course, they had to get to the sidewalks, too. >> it's too bad, it's light. we have young kids out here shoveling snow for us. >> the city of wilmington got 2 1/2 inches of snow. southern delaware saw up to 8 inches. >> heading to atlantic county new jersey, crews worked well into the night to make sure all the snow is out of the way. the action cam was in peach tree plaza in hammonton, new jersey where plows were clearing out the parking lot for all the

shoppers. salt trucks came through to make sure the leftover snow does not turn into ice. it was a similar scene not far away in galloway township, atlantic county. residents were busy scraping snow off their cars and some people had their snow blowers clearing over the sidewalk on vine avenue. >> philadelphia international airport reported minor delays overnight, but that could change dozens of flights were dlaited dlaited -- delayed or cancel yesterday because of snow and ice concerns in other parts of the country. be sure to check with the airline before heading to the airport. getting around is still a bit dicey this morning, if you're hitting the roads in hatboro, montgomery county, drivers were taking their time as you should balls the roads are covered with -- because the roads are covered with snow and ice. the action cam at york and moreland road where a few commuters headed out. >> is not surprising the cold

>> snow and problem south of us, the storm lingered in north carolina which had blizzard conditions through much of yesterday. parts of the state got up to ten inches of snow. that crippled travel to the folks there. a foot of snow fell in parts of eastern virginia and a blizzard warning was issued for the cities along the coast. officials warned that bitter cold would keep roads treacherous or dangerous today, long after the snow.

13 miles per hour. here we go, these are the actual numbers, 14 in reading, 15 in allentown. 17 in philadelphia. 14 in millville. what i was talking about earlier, even though there's a ton of salt on the main roads when temperatures are this cold the salt is less effective. there's a lot of icy patches out there, take it easy on the roads. minus 3 in lancaster. 4 in philadelphia. minus 9 in the poconos. it's cold in virginia than it is in philadelphia. only 6 in richmond. 5 in binghamton. 8 in pittsburgh, 16 in washington, d.c. that cold air drives down into the panhandle of florida. it's the entire eastern seaboard that's bitter cold. salt sat there's yesterday's to remember right there over my shoulder. we're seeing mainly clear conditions up and down the mid atlantic and the northeast coast this morning. later this afternoon, one or two spotty snow showers may develop with the stiff northwest breeze, otherwise it's just a

combination of sun and clouds. later this evening, once the sun sets we'll lose the in stability and we'll go mainly clear again, the clear skies allow the temperatures to drop 60 a cliff. tomorrow morning it will be cold than what we're experiencing right now. windchill will get a little bit better today. by 1:00 p.m., 8 in philadelphia. 5 in millville. later this evening, same thing, feeling like the low to single digits. how about 8 below in the poconos. if you're doing skiing bundle up in layers. tomorrow morning, minus 3 in allentown. minus 3 in lancaster, 5 degrees in millville. so for today, icy cold, 25 degrees is the forecasted high for philadelphia. it will never feel anything remotely close to that with the winds. single digits that's what it will feel like. cape may, 27. allentown, 24. trenton, 24. we'll start out with sunshine, gradually see clouds building and one or two snow showers
