throughout the area live on sky6 for you but get ready to thaw out because a warmup is on the way for center city philadelphia. monday night and the big story on "action news" is another freezing night. >> we have team coverage. nora muchanic is in trenton where a complicated cleanup is under way following a water main break there. but first, meteorologist cecily tynan has more on the cold and when a change is heading our way. cecily. >> hi, rick and monica. and a change will be heading our way tomorrow. temperatures will be increasing but look at the morning lows today. philadelphia down to 12 degrees, wilmington 10, allentown six and notice areas with the higher amounts of snow on saturday with a deeper snow pack, temperatures a lot colder. atlantic city airport zero, millville the air temperature dropping all the way to 4 degrees below zero. and this is the time of the year that we typically get the coldest temperatures. average high for this time of year is 40. we've been well below that since last week.

thursday 35, friday 32, saturday, sunday and today our highs only in the low to mid-20's. but warmer air is going to be moving in but it definitely will be coming at a price. so, tonight, the evening planner showing that clouds rolling in and with more cloud cover temperatures will be a little bit slower to drop than last night. by 11 o'clock down to 20 degrees. overnight low philadelphia still very cold, 18 degrees but not quite as brutal as this morning. now, double scan live showing what we're tracking for tomorrow, this is a warm front and this is bringing some snow to chicago. that will be lifting north of our region but as it does, it will drive some light moisture our way and there is a possibility that some of it could be in the form of some sleet and some freezing rain and snow to the far northwest suburbs. so, the national weather service has issued and winter weather advisories for really areas of north of the pennsylvania turnpike late tomorrow morning into early wednesday morning.

i'll talk more specifically about that and track warmer air on the way coming up in the full accuweather forecast. >> thank you cecily. and of course the "action news" morning team will be keeping an eye on that system headed our way. you can get the latest models from accuweather as well as updates on traffic and the news from overnight of course starting tomorrow morning at 4:30. >> in trenton, new jersey, crews are cleaning up a frozen market street there after a water main break flooded the area this morning. happened right next to the hughes justice complex forcing the building to close. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic is live on the scene with the plans that folks had to change today. nora. >> reporter: that's right, rick, lots of cases had to be postponed and thousands of workers got the day off today after this water main cracked along market street. crews have been working all day on it and are just about finishing up their repairs. >> i have no clue what was going on. i went into the building, they said it's closed. wow, amazing. i see all the water people are out. >> reporter: legal secretary

yvonne washington arrived at the hughes justice complex for work this morning only to find the building locked up. more than 2500 state employees got the unexpected day off after a 16-inch water main in front of the building on market street ruptured. >> it's due to -- we've had some extreme weather conditions and temperatures have been very low. >> reporter: officials say shutting down the building which houses the appellate and supreme court along with the attorney general's office was a must. >> number one, we have no fire protection. number two, we have no toilet facilities or any type of water for the building itself. >> reporter: the water main break turned area around the complex into a skating rink as a coating of ice covered the sidewalks and the street. two of mercer county's court houses nearby that depend on the water main also had to close for the day. >> we showed up for court today and the door is locked. so -- and the sign says no court. >> reporter: a little frustrating. >> very frustrating but what are you going to do. >> reporter: shutting down the court houses and the justice complex meant the day-care center inside was

closed too an unwelcome surprise for the working mom of this two-year-old. >> i had work today but i'm going have to call off because of the main break. it's unfortunate. >> had no idea. i was coming up for an appeal today that was to be argued but did not realize that this was happening. >> reporter: crews have been working all day first to redirect the water lines coming off the ruptured if i a 25-inch main so surrounding buildings have their watery stored and second to repair the main that broke and disrupted courtser. >> today was our scheduled oral argument. we have been waiting about a year for this oral argument. >> reporter: really. >> no, i didn't know it was closed. >> reporter: back live now officials here on the scene tell us that the contractors have replaced the pipe that broke and the job should be finished by 6 o'clock or 7 o'clock tonight. that means that the justice complex and the court houses involved here should be opened and ready for business tomorrow. live in trenton, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, nora, thank you. the philadelphia water

department says a failed sewer line is likely to blame for this sinkhole in the city's kensington section. officials say the sewer problem made a 6-inch water main burst causing part of east boston street to collapse. two cars fell into the hole including one brand new vehicle. residents of the area are dealing with no water and no heat. officials say it could be some time before the repairs are made. >> a 75-year-old man is recovering in the hospital tonight after a 50-pound dumbbell smashed into the windshield of his z it happened at 7:30 this morning here in the southbound lanes of the new jersey turnpike in old man township. police say the say it appears that weight dropped right on top of the driver. he's at close chester medical send. officials say it's unclear where the weight came from. officials in chester county looking into three separate home invasions just miles apart and now they're trying to figure out if the cases are all connected.

walter perez live in uwchlan township police tonight with details on the investigation for us. walter. >> reporter: hey, monica. this is a rural quiet section of chester county making cases like these that much more shocking. this time two armed men forced their fly a house in uwchlan township with a young couple and their two young children inside. >> this is obviously an incident which has rattled the community here. >> reporter: uwchlan township police lieutenant scott alexander talking about a terrifying home invasion that occurred last thursday. it was past 9 p.m. when two masked gunmen entered the home off peck roadway married couple and their two young children inside. as the attacker ransacked home the husband quickly ran next door to alert the neighbors who called 911 and. he quickly returned to find the gunman had left with an undisclosed amount of cash. >> clearly we have two very dangerous individuals who are willing to go into the home of

a albeit a stranger and rob them at gunpoint. we're just fortunate that nobody was injured. >> reporter: now investigators are working to see if this case might be linked to a pair of very similar cases several weeks ago in nearby chester springs. it was early november when two armed men wearing masks forced their way into a home at 1:20 in the morning on buyers road and that happened a few days after a pair of armed home invaders tremendous terrorized a family in their home before getting away with cash and july regent neighbors say the reason they moved to this part of chester county was to get away from that kind of nonsense. >> it's really quiet neighborhood. you would never really think something like that would happen. it's kind of scary. >> something never happens here and to have that many in one time so we have a security system so i'm glad of that. >> i need to have my gun a little more handy. these guys seem to be organized. and keep your doors locked.

>> reporter: once again no arrests in any of these cases. anyone with any information is asked to call police. reporting live from uwchlan township chester county, walter perez channel6 "action news." rick. >> walter, thank you. the family of a woman killed by her husband is speaking out tonight just one day after his release from prison. rafael robb a former professor at the university of pennsylvania completed his 10 years sentence for voluntary manslaughter yesterday. he pled guilty to beating his wife ellen robb to death back in 2006. today ellen's family spoke out in support of other victims who may be trapped in a similar relationship. >> ellen was in many respects the face of domestic violence. she was a loving mother who -- who stayed in a relationship, an abusive relationship because she thought it was best for her daughter and the face of domestic violence is like that everywhere. >> ellen robb's family has also launched a foundation in

her honor to help raise awareness for and fight against domestic violence. >> a college student accused of drunk driving and hitting a philadelphia police sergeant with his car is leded to trial. 21-year-old colin murphy is accused of hitting sergeant joseph kane while cane was conducting a traffic stop. cane suffered a broken collarbone broken ribs and internal bruising. murphy waived his preliminary trial this morning. philadelphia police want your help tracking down this armed robbery suspect who held up two banks at gunpoint. he first targeted th citizens bank christmas:last wednesday he struck again at the branch banking and trust on knights road. if you know anything about who this suspect may be please contact philadelphia philadelphia police. >> new jersey's next gubernatorial election is still 10 months away but already one democrat is getting some big support. former goldman sachs executive phil murphy has been endorsed

the sun now setting at 4:54, so we're getting more daylight as we head through the winter. right now, though, it's still very cold out there. philadelphia 22, down from our high of 23. really popular number. allentown right now 23, cape may 24, beach haven 24, the rest of our viewing area 22 degrees, so the cold air is in place and satellite6 along with action radar slowing a system that will bring us warmer air. it's a warm front near chicago producing a little bit of snow. this will be lifting through late tomorrow and as it does, there is the potential that parts of our area get some icing. tonight, though, will be precipitation free. it's going to be a cold night. not quite as cold as last night. 18 degrees in philadelphia, 12 in allentown, 16 in wilmington and 20 in atlantic city. for the first time since thursday temperatures above freezing, something to celebrate. 34 degrees by 1 o'clock. but lots of clouds in place.

should make it up to about a high of 38 degrees. and then future tracker showing that warm front moving in. around 5 o'clock in the evening, around the evening commute, this is when we'll likely see some mixed precipitation starting to break out in the far northwest suburbs. looks like it hangs on around 9 o'clock, the lehigh valley, the poconos, northern berks county a little bit that of mix. still dry in philadelphia and then a cold front rolls through. that will bring us the main area of rain, about a quarter inch in the wee hours of the morning on wednesday. temperatures will the 40's. so, this should just be rain in philadelphia. little bit of some lingering drizzle on wednesday at 7 o'clock. again, temperatures well above freezing. i think a bigger concern wednesday morning will be fog with that warmer air over the cold ground could have some dense fog. association the five day at 5::showing tomorrow we warm up to 38 degrees. it's cloudy, not as cold, some of that icing possible late tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. wednesday morning fog, milder, 50 degrees. look at this. on thursday, january thaw.

in a crash searching for lloyd. elizabeth hur is live with morism authorities say they're following up on a number of leads and they have reason to believe he's still in the area. that is why hundreds of officers from multiple agencies are in orlando right now and they say they will not rest until their suspect is caught. a somber morning for police in orlando turned into a day of an all out manhunt for a cop killer. >> he's going to jail. >> reporter: master sergeant debra clayton was that gunned down in this wal-mart parking lot while trying to contact murder suspect markeith lloyd wanted in the shooting death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. >> the preliminary information was she either recognized him or was notified of his presence and then went to contact him. >> he had a security vest on. he walked by me. i'm walking down the side right past the officer. i heard her tell him to stop

or whatever. he shot her. he shot her down end took off running. i mean, it's unreal. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say the suspect ran away and paramedics responded within minutes but the 17 year veteran mother of two later died at the hospital. >> she married her soul mate. she was the daughter. she was daddy's little girl. >> reporter: hours later this florida law enforcement community hit with another loss. authorities say a motorcycle deputy was hit and killed by a van while working a perimeter searching for the suspect. >> best thing that he can do at this time is turn himself in. we will love to be able to resolve this situation peacefully. >> reporter: and tonight there's a $60,000 reward dealing being offered in this bg offered in this case. they warn anyone who may be out there helping the suspect evade arrest, well, 33, too, will be arrested and charged

with a crime. reporting live in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news. monica. >> thank you, elizabeth. convicted killer dylann roof rested his case to spare his life without calling any witnesses and tomorrow both sides of the sentencing phase of his death penalty trial will give closing argument. the jury is expected to start deliberating after there. they'll decide if he's sentenced to death or life in prison for killing nine parishioners during the charleston church massacre. >> still no claims of responsibility for a deadly truck attack that killed four israeli soldiers over the weekend including one who was an american citizen. a group of other young cadets were on a sunday outing in jerusalem when a truck drove through a crowd. the driver was slot dead at the scene. police say will he no criminal history. nine people including five of the man's relatives were arrested. world news tonight with

david muir will have much more on the top stories of the day including the search for the suspected cop killer in orlando. you can watch it all tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> a man who tried to abduct a university of delaware student has pleaded guilty. police say joseph rudge grabbed the woman by her neck and put a chemical soaked rag over her mouth back in july. she was moving things from her car to her apartment here at the colonial gardens complex in newark at the time. rudge was scared away when the victim screamed and elbowed him. he'll face at least 15 years in prison when he's sentenced in march. this suspected home burglar probably did not count on a surveillance system capturing his movement outside a home in service he allegedly broke in through a front window on december 23rd. the man is accused of stealing an apple watch a computer and jewelry before taking off. if you know who he is, please call police. two men are also wanted for robbing a north

philadelphia subway restaurant last wednesday night. this surveillance video was taken in the store along the 1100 block of girard avenue. detectives say the pair acted as if they were about to order. then flashed a gun and told the clerk "don't get shot over something stupid." the clerk handed over cash and the suspects ran off. >> jury selection is under way in the criminal trial against a former chester county school superintendent charged with theft. former coatesville area school district head richard como is accused of stealing school funds and hiring unqualified convicted felons to teach. still not clear if racist and sexist texts that como sent about students and staff will be introduced during his trial. former coatesville athletic director jim donato already pled guilty to stealing $15,000 from the school district and was sentenced to two months in prison. from our delaware news room tonight wilmington police investigating a shooting inside of a store this afternoon. happened inside of the lancaster market at the corner

of lancaster avenue and clayton streets. detectives are not releasing many details at this point but they do say one person was found inside the store and was taken to the hospital for treatment. >> a vandal or vandals target add northeast philadelphia church property and at least one people tore up the lawn here behind bethesda presbyterian church on red lion road in bustleton. several basketball hoops were also knocked over. church elder stanley show field noticed the damage sunday morning. he had this message for the culprit or culprits. >> why would you do this to a church? to church property? why do anybody's private property? i know these four wheels vehicles people love to -- they're supposed to be off-road and they like to take them off-road but to do it on private property and especially a church is just incredible to me. >> he has filed a report about that damage with police. >> philadelphia police commissioner richard ross is marking his first year as the

city's top cop. vernon odom sat down with condition eros to talk about the successes and the struggles still facing the department. >> realizing that despite your best efforts you going to come up short for some people. >> reporter: one year after he was sworn in as police commissioner richard ross reflects from the very top after more than a decade in the top rung. he was retired economicker charles ramsey's top deputy running the major operations hour by hour minute by minute each day. so, there are few surprises now. stability is the operative word. what are the crime stats after year one. the murder rate the same as the year before. the number of cop involved shooting the same. overall violent crime, meaning rape, robbery and aggravated assault down 5 percent. >> behind every statistic is a person who has been victimized what about police corruption a necessary preoccupation for his predecessor who was determined to clean up the department ross says ever

channel6 "action news." >> and we have some breaking news from the city's port richmond section tonight. chopper6 over the scene of a crash here involving a school bus and a pickup truck. it's happening here along castor avenue just north of balfour street. that's where a pickup truck we're told crashed into the side of a small school bus. in fact, the pickup truck is still wedged against the side of that school bus as you can tell right there to the left of your screen. traffic is moving right around behind the accident. police are investigating exactly what happened. as far as injuries we know the driver of the pickup truck was injured and taken to hahnemann hospital. no word on his condition. the school bus driver apparently was not hurt and fortunately he did not have any children on board at the time of the crash but again, an accident here in the city's port richmond section, traffic slowly but surely moving around it and of course we'll keep an eye on this situation, bring you more information as it becomes available tonight. >> all right. speaking of traffic, let's

swing it over to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center see what else is going on. >> started out quiet but a bunch of accidents including that one happened and we've had two on 95. now, most of the highways are completely dry this evening but as soon as you get on the shoulders, there are icy spots and we've had two separate accidents where vehicles have actually run off of 95 into the snowy median. one here is southbound on 95 at woodhaven and they're take out the left lane. the other one is northbound just up ahead at street road. that's been all pushed off to the side but southbound you're getting a delay because that left lane is blocked. we, too, are watching that school bus accident in port richmond. again, it's caster near richmond that you want to avoid even though you can squeeze by i would just avoid it as emergency crews remain on the scene. there are also on the scene of a crash involving a pedestrian in center city at broad and chestnut by the capitol grille. jammed solid on southbound city avenue this evening between 30 and three. couple accidents in that stretch. i really would avoid it if i were you. starting at 11:00 tonight you

similar temperatures in fact, 22 is a fair bet across-the-board for the most part. otherwise cape may beach haven 24 degrees. the clouds again really took over the area through much of the day and then very late you start to see them breaking apart a little bit. we have a warm front to the west that will spill clouds back our way late tonight during the day tomorrow. there's a little ribbon of precipitation in the form of light snow right now in the midwest passing through chicago and as this warm front continues its journey to the north and west, our northwestern areas especially near the lehigh valley, poconos will see a little precipitation out of this front. 11 o'clock tomorrow morning it's going to be the first time since last thursday that temperatures are going to go back above freezing. at 33 degrees philadelphia, 37 in millville, 40 in wilmington. could be a couple of snow showers up towards the poconos late tomorrow morning. most of the day is dry despite that it's cloudy, maybe a few glimmers of sun especially south of philadelphia.

more clouds to the north and west. it's 5 o'clock in the evening we'll watch some of the precipitation arriving with the true warm air invection with those southwesterly winds. so, up close to reading, allentown, northern montgomery and bucks county tomorrow evening, there could be a little period of some freezing rain as those temperatures are trying the warm at the low levels. the rest of us upper 30's, 40's by tomorrow night at 9 p.m. and it's dry. then late tomorrow night early wednesday morning some showers pass through and note temperatures even into the lehigh valley go back into the 40's as that warm air invades and a few leftover showers here early on wednesday morning. again, some icing possible up towards the lehigh valley. very light icing, if that. but north of pottstown something to follow. and then as we're taking a look at that six to sen t.e.n.s. day outlook the eastern half of the country we're in a good area with temperatures seeing greatest above normal, temperatures normal is 40 so moving forward i think many days are going to be in the 40's if not even

>> ♪ >> monday night, accuweather is tracking a warmup after our stretch of frigid temperatures and officials say they now know what caused a large sinkhole, a huge sinkhole to open up in philadelphia. but the big story on "action news" tonight is a bizarre accident this morning on the new jersey turnpike. a 75-year-old man was driving southbound in salem county when a 50-pound dumbbell came crashing through the windshield. police don't know where the dumbbell came from or if they do, they're not saying. meanwhile the driver is in the hospital in critical condition.
