with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> monday night, accuweather is tracking a warmup after our stretch of frigid temperatures and officials say they now know what caused a large sinkhole, a huge sinkhole to open up in philadelphia. but the big story on "action news" tonight is a bizarre accident this morning on the new jersey turnpike. a 75-year-old man was driving southbound in salem county when a 50-pound dumbbell came crashing through the windshield. police don't know where the dumbbell came from or if they do, they're not saying. meanwhile the driver is in the hospital in critical condition. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live near the scene of the accident in old man's township and bob what are police saying about this? >> reporter: well, jim, good evening. you said it right. an extremely bizarre story. and let's remember how unlucky

and how unfortunate it is for this driver and we just found out who he is. he's jack decarlo of hamilton township mercer county he's 75 years old and now fighting for his life in the hospital. this is the aftermath of an accident on the new jersey turnpike like you've probably never heard of. it only involves this zune a 50-pound dumbbell. new jersey state police say around 7:30 this morning the dumbbell somehow came crashing through the windshield badly injuring the 75-year-old driver. the good news is police say the driver who was alone was conscious before being airlifted to crozer-chester medical center but his injuries are serious. and he's now in critical condition. it's a bizarre accident that's left drivers confused. >> is this real life? >> how did that happen. >> reporter: investigators haven't told us that yet but what we know is a 75-year-old man was heading southbound on the turnpike near mile marker six in oldmans township then the 50-pound weight came crashing through. you can even see the hole left

in the windshield resembles that of a dumbbell. the only explanation drivers can come up with is it fell off a vehicle or someone launched it off an overpass. >> if someone threw it off an overpass that's absolutely crazy. you can get somebody killed like that. >> reporter: the state police say that's exactly what they're looking into. we saw them out there on one of these overpasses nearby where we are examining if, in fact that dumbbell was launched over that overpass and into the suv and again, the victim, 75-year-old jack decarlo of hamilton township, mercer county. reporting live along the new jersey turnpike, bob brooks channel6 "action news." >> bob thank you. another day of brutally cold temperatures in the tri-state area but after another frigid night tonight we'll actually begin to see temperatures go up. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the "action news" big board. cecily, what's the late word from accuweather. >> jim, i think a lot of

people will be glad to hear things are warming up especially after this morning. the low in philadelphia all the way down to 12, wilmington 10, allentown six and areas with that deeper snow pack in south jersey, temperatures even lower. atlantic city airport down to zero and millville the air temperature 4 degrees below zero and we have been stuck in the deep freeze since thursday. friday's high only 32. saturday, yesterday and today afternoon highs only in the 20's. average high for this time of the year is 40 degrees. warmer air is moving in but it's going come at a price. storm tracker6 live double scan showing this band of snow, this is a warm front and what this will do is lift through our area late tomorrow and that could bring a bit of icing. all depends on how quickly that warm air can move in but the national weather service has posted weather advisories for all areas north of the pennsylvania turnpike late tomorrow morning into early wednesday morning for the potential for some icing.

"action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is lie at the scene tonight. sarah, how did this happen?

how do they fix it? >> reporter: well, jim, authorities, the water department does not believe this was caused by the weather despite the bitterly cold temperatures. at this point they believe that the sewer line failed, that caused a water main break which damaged a gas line and caused a sinkhole to open up behind me. at this hour about 12 homes have no water service. six of those no heat. and we're told it could be days until service is restore restored. >> so, this is not going to be an overnight process. >> reporter: today an emergency contractor hired by the philadelphia water department started assessing how to go about fixing the damaged sewer, water main and gas line here on the 2300 block of east boston. >> the first step is going to be removing the debris from the washout so you can get a visual on the sewer to see what kind of remayors need to be made there. >> reporter: it was before 9:00 yesterday morning when the water department responded after one resident reported water in his basement. right before the workers' eyes

the street fell away opening up a giant sinkhole swallowing up two cars. alyssa banks owns one of them. it was brand new. >> a little overwhelmed. you know, like it's just not -- took -- when i came out in the morning it took a little while for me to -- it's not part of your visual vocabulary to come out and see your car in a big giant hole so it took anoint process. >> reporter: some residents have no heat. others have no water. >> two up in huntington the entire intersection collapsed last year. yeah, so it's not surprising. i mean, the city is built on old canals, so it's going to happen. >> reporter: the water department believes the sewer line failed first causing the 6-inch water main to break. dirt and debris underground washed away and the street collapsed. damaging the gas line. the city says it could be several days before repairs are complete and service

restored. >> they say it could be a week but we'll work as fast as we can to make sure if it can be less we'll work to make it less. >> reporter: and the city tells us the actual street, the pavement might not be fully repaired until the springtime because typically that type of work doesn't even happen this time of year. live in kensington, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news. jim. >> thank you sarah. in trenton another large water main break caused problems today. a section of mark street was flooded after a 16-inch main broke this morning. the water quickly froze and turned the area into one icy mess. officials had to close the hughes justice complex and the mercer county courthouse building for the rest of the day. they're expected to reopen tomorrow. a camden county judge has once again delayed murder trial of a father accused of killing his young son. david creato jr.'s trial was scheduled to begin today but a

judge rescheduled it for april after creato's attorney said a pathologist hadn't completed his report. creato has pleaded not got murder and child endangerment. the body of his son brendan was found in 2015 near a creek close to his father's haddon township home. the family of a little girl who was killed by a hit-and-run driver honored two philadelphia police officers today for their hard work to solve the case. "action news" was at the 19th district in west philadelphia this afternoon as as aiesha pol presented thpresented. pennsylvania governor tom wolf continued his jobs that pay tore in delaware county. "action news" was at jodi foods in sharon hill this morning when the governor stopped by to tour the

facility. after the tour he took part in a round table with employees. the plant produces interrian foods for specialty food shops and soup mark. wolf said it is an example by an innovative pennsylvania business there has employed hundreds of people. new jersey governor chris christie signed measures aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence. the bill has maximum sentences for repeat offenders. there were more than 65,000 domestic violence incidents in the garden state every year. coming up on "action news" tonight an upper merion man convicted of murders his wife 10 years ago has been released from prison. tonight the victim's family is reacting. plus, philadelphia police are trying to track the vandals who have targeted a synagogue now more than once. cecily. >> bundle up before you step out tonight. 22 degrees in philadelphia right now.

occurred here. >> reporter: jerry gregory is talking about the killing of his sister ellen robb at the hands of her former husband rafael robb. a decade ago he was an economics professor at the university of pennsylvania. family friends and neighbors gathered outside their empty home today where the domestic violence killing occurred. because rafael robb was released from a commonwealth prison yesterday after serving out his 10 year sentence on a manslaughter conviction. he's now on 10 years probation. >> he can't simply go back into society unfettered while the memory of my sister fades away. >> reporter: 10 years after the gruesome killing of ellen robb this neighborhood is still haunted by it. rafael robb now out of prison still jointly owns the property of 670 forest road in wayne along with his wife's estate. >> what would happen if we saw him back in this area? i don't think that we would not

act. >> reporter: the couple's daughter olivia is now 22. robb has been hit way court order to pay $125 million to their daughter. in the past he's claimed he's worth $3 million but apparently he has far more in a french bank account. >> sewn we're certainly supporting district attorney steel and their efforts to evaluate the potential for a perjury charge. >> reporter: ellen robb's fame family believes he'll be residing in western pennsylvania near pittsburgh for now. his lawyer had no comment today. her family has launched a foundation to fight against domestic violence. in wayne, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news. >> a jewish congregation in the tacony section of philadelphia has been hit by vandals for app second time this month. >> walking down the aisle here to go talk to the cantor and just when i got to little bit to where the cameraman is the rock came through the window the size of a baseball. >> the president of temple

menorah keneseth says he was almost hit in the december 2nd incident. last friday he says six windows were broken by flying rocks. so far police don't have suspects. they say somebody painted a swastika on the synagogue more than a decade ago but there haven't been any incidents until last month. since then, a local glazier's union has volunteered to repair the windows for free. or . if you're looking for little ways to simplify life, feeling good about what your family eats is a pretty simple place to start. my name is tammy plumlee, and i raise honest, simple turkey for shady brook farms.

replacement might be. college basketball villanova falls but not that far. cats are now number three in the country. last week's loss at butler knocked them out of the top spot in the latest ranks. undefeated baylor is new number one. although nova did receive one first place vote. tonight college football will crown a new national champion or could be the same if alabama continues its dominance. alabama and clemson meet tonight in tampa in the college football playoff national championship game. the crimson tide will be in search of their fifth title in eight years. alabama is undefeated. clemson lost one game this season that wasn't by a single point. this should be a good one. >> proud of our team to have the opportunity to get back here and it's been a fun journey. >> i know both teams have worked very hard all year and certainly very deserving to have the opportunity play in

this game and we certainly look forward to it. >> they can hardly contain their excitement. playing hockey is like riding a bicycle, right, never forget how to do it. some of the flyers all time greats were on the ice this morning ahead of a big weekend. jaime apody has their story. >> reporter: it was a sight for sore eyes. and sore muscles. the flyers alumni team made up of guys ranging in age from their 40's to their 60 hit the ice this morning in anticipation of saturday's matchup with the penguins alumni. part of the flyers 50th anniversary celebration. what was it like out there? you guys couldn't wipe the smiles off your faces. >> i don't know if it was a smile or my mouth was agape just trying to gain oxygen. >> reporter: but nobody had a bigger smile on their face than brian propp. 16 months removed from suffering a massive stroke that left him unable to speak the flyers hall of famer will suit up with his old teammates. >> for me mentally it really has helped me to do what i love. >> reporter: prop probably has more practice than any of these guys. >> ready to shoot.

shoot, he scores. >> reporter: his doctors have been using skating as part of the therapy to aid in his recovery. >> i have to take it slowly mentally i'm not there yet mike's brain doesn't work that well yet. i have trouble with numbers and days of the week and things like that. so, it just -- it's just going to take me a little time. prop tells me still has trouble with every day tasks like dressing himself feeding himself and yet here he is on ice playing hockey. >> anybody knows brian knows he's one of the most positive and upbeat people i've ever met, so, you know, nothing like that is going to keep brian down. >> it's amazing just to see, you know, the strides he's made since his accident, it's tremendous and just to see him out there and the way he's moving it's great and it's inspiring. >> he just loves being out there and the fact that he's out there playing and still scoring goals is a testament to his hard work and his perseverance. >> reporter: no doubt saturday it will be prop cheering the loudest clears of all inform voorhees new jersey

it. we're live on sky6 taking a look at spring mountain. if you get too cold you can warm up by the fire there. the cold weather means lots of snow making at the ski resorts. we have the potential for some icing though. the best chance will be in the far northwest suburbs north of the pennsylvania turnpike tomorrow evening into tomorrow night. this is where we have a winter weather advisory posted so you really do want to be careful. a warm front is moving in and that will produce some light precipitation, could be some icing in the far northwest suburbs but then temperatures are up and next week our region has the greatest chance of above normal temperatures. normal temperature for this time of the year it's 40 degrees. normal high. so even 40 would feel pretty nice compared to this. 22 degrees in philadelphia. down from our high of 23. three days in a row of temperatures stuck in the 20's. allentown 21, wilmington 21, trenton 20, the atlantic city airport 21 degrees.

satellite6 along with action radar showing seeing a mixture of clouds and sunshine today. the clouds will be filling in as we head through the overnight hours ahead of a warm front. this is the front that will move through late tomorrow. it is producing some snow in chicago. i think most of the moisture with this will be heading up to the north. so philadelphia tomorrow just a lot of clouds and temperatures finally above freezing. but tonight partly cloudy and bitter cold again, 18 in philadelphia, 12 in allentown, 21 in cape may and 13 in trenton and a day planner showing around lunchtime temperatures should finally reach above the freezing mark. first time since thursday we'll be at that. by 4 o'clock 38 degrees. so really no problems with any icing tomorrow night in philadelphia but future tracker showing around 5 o'clock, this is when that warm front will begin to produce some mixd precipitation the far northwest suburbs by about 9 o'clock. still some sleet, some freezing rain northern lehigh valley and the poconos. philadelphia by then 38 degrees and then a cold

front will push through. that will bring us a round of rain the wee hours of the morning, temperatures in the 40's. some of that rain could linger into wednesday morning but again, 40 degrees, temperatures well above freezing but there is a possibility of some fog wednesday morning. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow lots of clouds, not as cool as the past three days, 38 degrees. wednesday fog in the morning, milder, 50. look at this a january thaw. a cold front moves through on friday. that will kick temperatures down to 53. i'm concerned about saturday. a chance for a wintry mix late in the day that could bring us an extended period of icing a high of 38 degrees. sunday more rain, 40 degrees and monday martin luther king day of service it will be rainy with a high of 46 so pretty gloomy forecast with temperatures at least climbing out of the 20's. >> all right, cecily. finally tonight students in south philadelphia were treated to ap to a special
