>> i think he said don't hate the player. hate the game. good tuesday morning. not often we get started with college sports but the national championship which ended early this morning was heart stopping and historic. >> the clemson tigers toppled alabama in a rematch of last year's title game if now, clemson looked to tie with a field goal but instead scored this. that touchdown, that play with only one second left. it lifted the tigers to the emotional 35-31 win. >> and that set up a celebration more than three decades in the making. the tigers won their last title for the 1981 season. >> this has been the most incredible team i've ever been around. y'all saw their heart and i'm going to tell you this, our fans deserve this, 35 years since clemson's been on top. >> it's not -- this is not for just us. this is for the tajh boyds, the

russia and trump is raising concerns with his latest hire, he looked in the family, his son-in-law landing an official white house position. abc's karen travers has more from washington. karen, good morning to you. >> good morning, kendis and diane. it is going to be an incredibly busy day on capitol hill as lawmakers get their first chance to question donald trump's cabinet nominees. now, the pace of this confirmation process has been very fast. but republicans say they want trump to have as many senior positions filled as possible on day one. donald trump's cabinet picks gearing up for a grilling. on the hot seat retired marine general john kelly tapped to be secretary of homeland security. and alabama senator jeff sessions, trump's choice for attorney general. sessions' hearing could be confrontational. 35 years ago he was rejected for a federal judgeship over allegations he made racist remarks. charges he forcefully denies. >> i am not a racist.

>> reporter: at least nine of trump's cabinet picks facing confirmation hearings this week. and four still have outstanding issues in the vetting process. that involves handing over personal financial information, and fbi background check and answering committee questionnaires and republicans dismissing democrats' concerns. >> yeah, everybody will be properly vetted. >> reporter: but eight years ago republican leader mitch mcconnell sent this letter asking for the vetting process for president obama's nominees to be finished before confirmation hearings. on monday, the senate democratic leader sent mcconnell's 2009 letter back to him with the names changed. >> the very things mcconnell thought were necessary for nominations we're asking for and now they're denying it. >> reporter: one position that does not require senate confirmation senior adviser to the president. trump announcing his son-in-law jared kushner will be working closely by his side in the west wing raising eyebrows and

questions of a potential ethical conflict. >> we'll talk about that later. >> reporter: today president obama takes his final ride on air force one likely flying to chicago for his farewell address, kendis and diane, aides say it will be a reflection on his presidency but also a call to action. diane. kendis. >> we'll have a little bit more on the tickets for that farewell address later this morning. karen, thank you. orlando's police chief is vowing to search the ends of the earth to find the man suspected of killing one of his officers. there's a $60,000 reward for the capture of markeith loyd. police say he shot and killed debra clayton then took off in a stolen car. she was trying to bring him in for questioning in the murder of his ex-girlfriend. meanwhile, another law enforcement officer has died during the search for loyd. deputy first class norman lewis was hit and killed by a vehicle while responding to the shooting scene. on the other side of the state we're learning new details about the ft. lauderdale airport

killings. abc news learned the suspect initially planned to fly to new york city on new year's eve. he canceled his reservation and made his first court appearance monday. his ex-girlfriend's daughter offering an apology to the victims' families. >> my deepest condolences to the innocent people who lost their lives and/or were injured. my heart's warm effort sinceres go out to their friends, families, my mother's brothers and sisters. >> he's due back in court next week. and the suspect in the ambush-style shooting of an american diplomat in mexico is back in the united states. the victim was shot and wounded while in a car friday captured on surveillance cameras. investigators are still trying to figure out the motive but a preliminary investigation found the suspect an american med student has mental health issues and also media reports the shooting was related to visa issues. still ahead the end of an

it was a close call for two dozen students in tennessee when their school bus caught fire. luckily the driver managed to rush all of them to safety before the whole thing went up in flames. the cause of that fire is still unknown. electrical problems being blamed for last month's deadly chair lift dent in colorado. the chair carrying kelly huber

and her two daughters struck a support tower at a resort near denver. all three fell 25 feet into hard packed snow. huber and killed and her daughters injured. the lift was constantly getting stuck in the days prior to the accident. a long and bizarre car chase finally ended in los angeles. sometimes shouting and gesturing out the window. he also threw clothing and other objects out the car and fired shots as well at the police who were pursuing him and they were very patient but then sharpshooters in suvs were called in. those big vehicles were used to box in the car and he was arrested peacefully. big changes are ahead for yahoo! if verizon purchases its web holdings. it would say good-bye to its ceo, co-founder david phyllo and four other board members. the remaining would be called altaba while verizon is expected to continue using the yahoo! name. it's in jeopardy after two hacks

through a lexus dealership in rozwell, georgia. the deer made it in through an open window on monday morning and then apparently panicked as it tried to get back outside. it did eventually escape. the dealership said it made it out perfectly safe. >> they have great deals this time of year. >> maybe it wanted to check it out. >> there is a mystery surrounding the whereabouts of derrick rose. he missed monday night's game against new orleans at madison square garden. no show was baffling because he actually took part in an afternoon shootaround. espn reporting that rose is in chicago dealing with a family situation. as we told you earlier the clemson tigers are the kings of the football world and earned their first crown since 1981. the hard way. >> the tigers beat alabama in a rematch of last year's championship and they used just about every second to pull off the stunner. an unbelievable ending to the national championship game.
