bloomquist off, in the news, a vehicle is destroyed in a crash along a highway in noon. and gunfire erupts at a crowded in nightclub in one of mexico's popular resort towns. the the big story on "actn news" is the day of giving back in the name of martin luther king. tens of thousands are donating their time to the king day of service. it's the largest event of its kind in the nation. annie mccormick spoke to some of the volunteers as she joins us live from north philadelphia. >> reporter: rick, 145 people are taking part in the -- 145,000 people are taking part in the area, at this specific event five thousand people strong are here having a good time and giving back. the keystone state boy choir opened the greater philadelphia martin luther king day of service at girard college.

>> we started with 1,000 volunteers in 1996, 1.5 million volunteers later and expected 145,000 volunteers here in the area today. >> reporter: founder of this event, todd bernstein explained the theme. >> the overall theme is educational justice we'll be creating 250 mini libraries for unconventional places in the city like barber shops, nail salons, laundromats where kids go with their parents. >> reporter: local leaders helped to build the bookcases with kids. >> read by force is a citywide campaign, our goal to make sure all kids with read on grade level by the time they go to the 4th grade. >> reporter: it covered all needs. the fight against hunger.
