philadelphia area today. >> and today's observations come at a high profile back and forth between an icon of the civil rights movement and the man who will be president just four days from now. georgia congressman john lewis has questioned the legitimacy of donald trump's election and will not attend his inauguration. in response the president-elect fired off a series of tweets this holiday weekend denigrating the congressman as a failed public leader and "all talk, no action" at an eve 70 miami today lewis said this to the crowd. >> never give up. never give in. stand up. speak up when you see something that is not right and not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something to say something and not be quiet. >> back in new york, mr. trump did meet privately with martin luther king the third today. king said the two had a very "constructive conversation." that controversy has given

new intensity to an already strained relationship between the incoming president and the african-american community. "action news" reporter vern node attended several day of service events dan talked to participants and leaders about this controversy. vernon. >> reporter: good afternoon brian. the truth is with donald trump's inauguration just days away now and the mlk celebration the annual one in high gear a lot of friction was bound to be generated already. then enter trump versus john lewis. at this midday anti-trump rally a mix of union and other acts 50's railed against the president-elect. the issues healthcare, criminal justice and the whole assortment of areas where the progressive movement is angry and promising to fight back against the president-elect's stated goals. many tell me they are relatively new to this level of activism. >> in areas of healthcare and protect women's rights and a lot of areas where that people could die because of bad

event at the mount carmel church in wilmington. the mayor says a plan to deploy more police officers to hot spots is what they are focused on today, those hot spots designated by police. they will also be loosening restrictions on overtime for members of the police department who will work those hot spots on foot patrol. >> it's not only a human cost but it's an economic developments cost for our city. we can't cripple the city's economy because of the reputation for violence and so we just to spend what it takes to get people out there to keep these numbers down to keep the statistical violence down. >> and mayor purzycki noting one of the more recent incidents on january 8th a wilmington store owner was shot and killed, 22-year-old devante dorsett an teen boy respect behind bars charged with first degree murder and other offenses in that case. again one of many in wilmington just since the beginning of the new year and just this afternoon wilmington police are investigating

reports of yet another gun shot victim. the city's new antiviolence plan is being rolled out today. sharrie. >> all right, alicia. a 14-year-old murder victim is being remembered in montgomery county. a public memorial honored grace packer at the new life church in glenside. police say grace was raped and dismembered after she was reported missing from abington township in july. her adopted mother sarah and is a havher boyfriend are facing charges. chad pradelli will have a live report at 5:00. >> violent and seemingly random attack outside of a south philadelphia parking garage has neighbors taking extra precautions. they say they have been vocal about security concerns but nothing has been done. bob brooks live outside the marine club on south broad at washington avenue. bob you've got the details here. >> reporter: brian, good evening, this is terrifying. a 24-year-old victim, she was followed right into her building to her parking spot

by this suspect. there was nothing to stop him and speaking with residents today they said this is all part of a larger picture of a giant lack of security here. overnight just before 3 a.m. a 24-year-old female resident was pulling into the parking garage. the detectives say at the entrance a suspect wearing ski mask armed way rifle tapped the driver's side win don't yelled to give him her stuff. she was followed into the building. she said the suspect smashed out her car window with a gun. police say he hit the woman with the gun and yanked her out of the today. the victim reports the suspect in a second female suspect took her phone and drove away in a red getaway car. >> obviously that sounds terrible. they need to invest in security here. >> reporter: as you can hear residents here feel terrible for the victim but they also say they knew this was coming. >> i think this weekend with the issues with garage doors so i don't think it was fully functional so i could see how someone could come in.

>> reporter: many residents say there's a huge lack of security at the marine club and we discovered it was quite easy to find a way in. you can see at the side door that sign reads a marine club key fob must be used i clearly don't have one. see what happens. get right in. >> i do it all the time. >> reporter: we went inside on two separate occasions. we did meet with a security guard working the garage. he says they always have someone here but residents tell us that's definitely not the case. is that guy always here? >> that's completely new to me. >> i've never seen a security guard there. >> reporter: okay, back out live here this is that side door that we tested out around noon. you can see it still opens right up. i can do it again just to prove it is shut i'm not using a key fob and it opens right up again. this is the marine club 1100 south broad street.

reporting live in south philadelphia, bob brooks channel6 "action news." brian. >> all right, bob, thank you. a contractor doing work in brookhaven delaware county hit a pipe and caused a gas leak. chopper6 was overhead while peco crews turned off the gas. the line was hit on dutton mills road. first responders evacuated nearby homes as a precaution but no one was hurt here. >> all right, it is time now for a check of the accuweather forecast as we start a new work week. >> meteorologist adam joseph standing by at the "action news" big board with the first check and a pretty nice day out there adam. >> not too bad out there today though temperatures right about average for this time of year, a little bit of sunshine early this morning, clouds increasing this afternoon with a warm front to the south temperatures right now 41 in philadelphia, but you can see the warmth lurking just to the south. charleston west virginia 58 degrees. there's a warm front that's going to be pushing through overnight tonight with a little bit of precipitation and you can see there's a little stripe here to the north and west developing with a couple of sprinkles and showers. that will continue its journey

to the north. the wider picture shows the actual low pressure center right now in the nation's heartland near kansas city. this goes to our north and that will bring a couple rounds of precipitation in from the south late tonight early tomorrow morning and the problem is especially for those northwestern suburbs there will be cold air situated as some of these showers pass through so there is a freezing rain advisory from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for berks county lehigh county northampton county into the poconos for the possibility of some icy spots especially during that morning rush tomorrow so for the lehigh valley and the poconos late tonight early on tuesday with temperatures near freezing, there's not a lot of precipitation but you get a few spotty light rain showers. we could see some slick spots on untreated surfaces especially bridges and overpasses first thing tuesday morning. then sharrie it's kind of a dreary tuesday. we'll talk about a warming accuweather forecast and a lack of sunshine this week coming up in just a little bit. >> wow.

we can't get these two together. >> well, it's january, so kind of goes every year like this. >> all right adam. employees from the children's hospital of philadelphia spent their day giving back in a number of ways. the action cam caught up with the group spruce up south philadelphia high school armed with paintbrushes and buckets. they gave the hallways and gymnasium quite the nice face-lift. >> and from our new jersey news room people also spent their day off working to clean up the streets in trenton. a group of volunteers from the bethany house of hospitality made their way down hamilton avenue picked up trash and you see raked some of the leaves out there this afternoon. >> a lot of service happening today. >> yeah. >> time for the "action news" traffic report. >> all right, matt pelman standing by in the "action news" traffic center. should be lighter though that picture doesn't agree with me. theoretically should be. we've had complications not the least of which is an overturned vehicle crash on 95 northbound side in the old

worked at cottman avenue. the good news is the vehicle is upright, everything is off to the side society lanes are opened but you're still getting an 11 minute delay on that northbound travel time with some speeds in the 20's and then 40's as you come northbound from center city because of that earlier accident around cottman avenue. also slow zones on the vine and the schuylkill and the boulevard, nothing too out of the ordinary. volume a little bit lighter than normal on most of the major highways. except here, pennsylvania turnpike in chester county the crawl is on on the eastbound side just 15 miles per hour. it's because of a crash approaching downingtown taking out one of the two lanes. i would really consider using 322 or the 30 bypass instead of the eastbound turnpike. in lower providence watch out for a crash along park avenue close to eagleville road and for the next 15 minutes or so a blockage in woodbury cooper at evergreen construction today. it will close close again tomorrow starting at 7:00 a.m. we'll check it again brian and sharrie, in the next half hour. >> all right, matt, thank you. see you then. still ahead here on a

>> the wife of the man who opened fire inside the pulse nightclub in orlando is now facing charges. the fbi arreste arrest noor sal. she was taken into custody after she moved after her outbound omar mateen was killed in a shootout with police. mateen killed 49 people inside that flight knight club on june 12th. we're expected to learn more

about there allegations during a court hearing set tomorrow. >> they've been in business for nearly 150 years but it's now an end to an era but what's been known as the greatest show on earth. the world famous circus is closing down. ringling brothers and barnum and bailey circus is calling it quits. the three ring circus has been entertaining spectators since the 1800s. it has tried to stay relevant but nonstop battles with animal rights groups led to the show removing its star elephants and eventually retiring them in 2016. the company says declining attendance and high operating costs are among the reasons for closing its doors for good. >> of course we're sad and it was a very difficult decision to make. >> a number of long time circus goers say they are disappointed. there are 30 more performances to go. the final show is set for may 21st in long island new york.

>> pennsylvania's liquor laws officially change tomorrow. you'll start seeing six packs and growlers at beer and distributors and that's not all. bars can start selling alcohol at 9 o'clock sunday mornings without the requirement that they also serve food to do so. and beer of the month clubs can now ship directly to homes in pennsylvania and sporting venues will be allowed to sell mixed drinks. governor wolf behind that bill back in november. >> big changes from the past. time for another check of the accuweather forecast. >> meteorologist adam joseph standing by with what we can have for the rest of the week with some folks enjoying the day off. >> holiday, kids not in school today at least most of them. as you can see at spring mountain sky6 they're taking advantage of the near normal temperatures. lack of rain out there right now heading down the slope there with their skis or their snow boards and a few folks maybe grabbing a bite to eat with the food truck there and right in front of the food truck that you can't see there's a nice little fire pit there that you can kind of get toasty if you get a little on

the chilly side. 39 wilmington upper 30's to the north and west, 41 philadelphia, 40 millville, 40 degrees in dover with a very light wind coming in out of the southerly direction. a wide look here satellite and radar will show there is a warm front. you can see this little stripe of on and off broken showers here working into western and central parts of pennsylvania. the actual low is winding up north of wichita right now. that heads over the great lakes and that's going to pull in a lot of warmth our way for the rest of the week but before we completely flood in the warm air later on tonight with some of those spotty showers north and west areas like berks county lehigh valley, it's going to flirt with near freezing through much of the overnight so there could be some patchy freezing rain in those counties but the rest of us with temperatures above the freezing point we are not looking at any slippery or icy conditions although there will be some ponding on the roadways with some of the showers. so, at 3:30 a.m. that's when we start see a little more in the way of the rain coming in from the south.

where you see the blue that would be some of that patchy freezing rain. that continues north of the pennsylvania turnpike 7:30 tomorrow morning where it's just plain old rain lancaster to philadelphia trenton wilmington, all points to the south. by around lunchtime you can see it flips to rain even for the majority up into the poconos as that warmer air comes in from the south. it's not a rain -- washout tomorrow but we'll have rounds of showers and rain 5 o'clock in the afternoon during the evening rush hour, still dealing with some pockets of light to moderate rainfall up in the lehigh valley at that point again. it is just plain old rain. so, it's kind of a dreary tuesday on tap from start to finish here with some on and off rain and temperatures above average but still going to feel very damp and raw with highs only in the mid 40's. but as we look at that four day at 4:00 forecast we move those temperatures up here the rest of the week. some early drizzle on wednesday. clouds really hang tough at 52 degrees with maybe a peak of sun. the best window of

>> today is all about people helping people. in the spirit of dr. martin luther king jr. this is a day of action and students all across our area were in the service spirit. at upper darby high school students had the day off but they still showed up to show their school some love. they cleaned everything from the tables and the chairs and even polished up their trophy case. hundreds of radnor township school district students parents and staff members gathered for the district's first ever martin luther king

jr. dave service. here they are seen loading up a truck full of items they collected for cradles to crayons which helps kids in dire situations. in medford new jersey it was all about making sure the hungry have a good meal at saint mary of the lakes catholic church and school volunteers all ages packed the auditorium to pack up lunches. they prepared and delivered more than 2500 sandwiches and snack bags that will be delivered to several local agencies and organizations that feed the homeless and hungry. >> y'all are going to package over 10,000 meals, hm. [cheers and applause] >> 10,000 meals and saint andrew catholic school in newtown bucks county hundreds participated in a stop hunger now event. they packed up as you heard more than 10,000 meals for people in the poorest areas of the world. all of the food they're preparing there will be sent

straight to the needest students in schools all across the globe. really impressive efforts and very inspiring all across our area sharrie. >> great ideas there and how about this alicia, the phillies also taking part in this king day of service by helping out aspiring baseball players the students sharpened their skills at a clinic led by outfielder roman quinn at the newly opened ryan howard training center. quinn also had some advice for the children off the field. >> just to have a dream and to follow it and do whatever you can to make it happen whether they want to be a doctor, lawyer whatever they want to do, just have something to work towards. >> during today's events local chevy materials announced a $25,000 college scholarship for some of the urban youth academy players. volunteers of all ages spent hands on doing community service. they made birthday cards and care packages for veterans and seniors today at saint luke's evangelical lutheran church.

>> 4:30 and "action news" continues with volunteers all across our region honoring the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. >> plus it's a simple idea that's helped more people than one little boy ever expected. now the donations for his so-called blessing box are pouring in. >> and one highway patrolman got the scare of his life when a tractor-trailer came flying at him on the icy road way. >> but first here at 4:30 vandals have struck again at a philadelphia sanctuary the building is owned by a nearby synagogue. it's been under construction for more than a year and in the past few months there's been several acts of vandalism at that location. "action news" reporter john rawlins live once again renard street and john you have the details. >> reporter: that's right. behind me is the construction site yoconstructionsite. it looks like someone went at it with a can of spray paint.

>> i don't think it was random only because this was the only building that was chosen in the entire shopping center. >> reporter: rabbi solomon isaacson talking about the defacing of the stone front of this construction project that belongs to congregation beth sullivan located just a few blocks weigh. >> the stone that is on here is that special jerusalem stone that we imported because of the sanctity of the place. >> reporter: called mikvah it will contain special pools of water used in jewish purification rights. they say it's not the first problem. they say bee bees have been fired and an entire light post in the parking lot was pulled down. surveillance video shows individuals have collected here late into the night. last month a masked person temporarily blinded cameras with a paintball the next night someone climbed the roof and cut the camera feeds. last summer someone stole a menorah from the congregation's main building.

mercury sedan. the investigation continues to determine why the man lost control in the first place. worker was killed today on the job in bucks county. chopper6 hd was over the scene at samuel grossi and sons along state road in bensalem. officials say a steel beam fell on a worker at the steel plant. the 57-year-old man was pronounced dead there at the scene. his name has not been release released. osha is investigating the cause of this accident. >> no one was hurt when fire broke out in an apartment building in southwest philadelphia. this was the scene after 3 a.m. this morning on the 8500 block of lindbergh boulevard. when firefighters arrived they saw flames coming out of the first floor unit. the entire building was evacuated. crews got that fire under control in just about 10 minutes. police are still looking for the person who killed a father of two in philadelphia's tacony neighborhood. 28-year-old cain fruster was

killed as he got into a colleague's vehicle on friday night. his 48-year-old coworker was also shot and remains in critical condition. >> a few states in the midwest are again on alert for icy conditions this after a weekend storm caused major damage and power outages in parts of oklahoma and kansas. branches covered with heavy thick ice were seen falling all across dodge city, kansas. there was up to an inch of ice on the trees and the roadways there. at least four people were killed and inn weather related road crashes in that part of the country. also icy conditions in kansas caused a tractor-trailer to lose control just missing a highway patrol car. trooper todd hauptmann posted the video on the close call that happened right before his eyes yesterday morning. he said the truck driver was going too fast in the storm, lost control and then crossed into oncoming traffic. amazing in awful this, all of

>> ♪ >> this is pretty wild. giant sinkhole opened up in one california town and now it's grown to 40 feet across and 15 feet deep. take a look at this. this is in pacifica in a parking lot between a fire station and a church. a misaligned underground drainage pipe is to be blamed for this hole and recent rains have caused more of the ground cave in. crews say it will be at least six weeks to get this fixed. dog's love of chasing geese got him stuck in need of rescue. theo the beagle got trapped on a small island after scurrying across a frozen lake. the ice rescue team was called to cross there ice to bring theo to safety. firefighters reunited three yo''s relieved owner with his very cold pup. >> good thing he's all right. it was a day of volunteering for a local nonprofit that works with

children. cradles to crayons hosted its giving back series today in west conshohocken. corporate and community members gathered to collect sort and create specialized kid packs. now the packs have a week's supply of clothing for children ranging in age from newborn to 12 years old who are living in homeless or low income situations. it's cradles to crayons largest volunteer day of the year and it's all part of dr. king's day of service. in new jersey they gathered in trenton's reflect on dr. king's legacy. lieutenant governor kim guadagno gave special remarks at the trenton war memorial. she shared the history of how this day to honor the civil rights giant came to be a federal holiday. today's events also included a forum on breaking racial barriers and talking about race relations in today's society. >> ♪ >> to big talkers now. on this dr. martin luther king jr. day we're seeing many inspiring examples of people helping people a mom and her

deserves to be treated. noah's wife caitlin posted their tradition on facebook and it's going wildly viral. she says the dad helps little arianna pick out a dress, get a little purse ready and then he holds open the door for her and makes her feel like a princess on their little dates. mom told abc news she will always know how she deserves to be treated because her dad sets such a high example. dad says you know what they love spending time together especially the part where they get to split that yummy desert and have a nice little conversation. so sweet. finally did you see this one on social media today? it looks like something out of jurassic park. hello. this video of a giant alligator meandering around a nature reserve in florida has everyone's attention on social media. a woman named kim joyner captured the dinosaur sized creature on her cell phone.

now 42 miles an hour where last half hour speeds were in the teens headed eastbound on the turnpike toward downingtown. the increase is because the crash eastbound approaching the downingtown interchange has cleared out. so we're starting to pick up the pace. at this point stick with the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound is getting better. some people have been using 422 to get around a crash in berks county. 724 is closed because of that accident between 176 and gibraltar road by the turkey hill. 422 is an option. you could use business 422 but 724 is closed this afternoon. still have a wreck in lower providence to avoid along park avenue close to eagleville road. stick with sunny side avenue or egypt road to get around that. there's a wreck in plymouth meeting along germantown pike at chemical road. on the big picture just a few red zones on the holiday monday afternoon like on the schuylkill westbound by city avenue, 14 miles per hour. had a crash on 95 northbound by cottman. that's cleared out of the way and our delay is gone, too.

live double scan we have a couple of sprinkles trying to develop on the radar. berks county offer to the off t. clouds moved in and some light rain showers will be developing during the overnight hours. upper 30's for reading allentown lancaster. same for wilmington. 41 philadelphia, 39 millville. again when we have the sun it felt pretty good but once those clouds pushed in it did feel a little on the chilly side this afternoon. there you can see the edge of the clouds working their way to the north and east. there's those spinning showers to the north and west and again we're not going to see a wall of heavy rain pushing in overnight. it will be kind of on and off in nature. the center of low pressure that's attached to this warm front that will be drifting through is way out in the nation's heartland where again we had some major icing events going on here with up to three-quarters of an inch of ice in some locations in parts of kansas as well as oklahoma. this all heading to the north and east even missouri getting in on that ice action this weekend but as that warm front pulls through our morning rush

tomorrow could be a little icy in spots around the lehigh valley. light rain for others. so, we're not looking at a major problem for that morning or evening rush tomorrow but use caution whether you're near the lehigh valley where there could be some icing on the bridges and overpasses or if you're around the rest of the area there will be ponding on the roads, both again slowing down that rush hour for the morning and then in the evening the steadiest rain will be passing through so there will be many puddles on the roads so you definitely want to kind of kick it back and allow a little extra time for both rushes tomorrow. 7:30 in the morning there you can see the green, the rain north of that pennsylvania turnpike the blue, some of that freezing rain in spots early on. then warm air floods in. we could catch a little bit of a break with just some drizzle around lunchtime with the initial band to the north and then a second round of some steadier rain could come in during that evening rush hour tomorrow and some lingering showers still early on wednesday morning. then for the rest of the week the jet stream lifts way to the north, floods in warm air.
