grace packer. her birth mother was even at today's memorial service. >> "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live from glenside in montgomery county with mor more. chad. >> reporter: yeah, rick, many people failed grace packer in life but today many strangers came together to help her in death and put on a memorial service. they came to say goodbye to a 14-year-old who suffered a life of pain and abuse. most had never met grace packer but her horrific murder has galvanized this community. >> it's a community issue and it's just devastating for the whole community and for the young lady. >> she matters to us. she matters to the community and it's right to give her a dignified honorable send off. >> reporter: authorities say grace was killed by her adoptive mother sara packer and boyfriend jacob sullivan. she was allegedly beaten and raped by sullivan as her mother watched.

they then poisoned her and left her for dead in a sweltering at particular. when she didn't die prosecutors say sullivan strangled her before dumping her body in the woods. grace's biological mother attended the service. the state put grace in foster care when she was just three. >> she was a loveable little girl and i only had three years with my daughter. >> i don't see how anyone could hurt her. she was so cheerful. she lit up everybody's day. she was just a happy person to be around. >> reporter: grace's birth mother rose hunt singer struggled to speak. bikers against child abuse and others in the community tried to help her through her grief. >> she wants to thank the wonderful women from abington that got this abington high school that put this memorial service together. it was beautiful. >> reporter: and sara packer and jacob sullivan are charged with grace's murder as one deputy chief in abington put

it to me this is the most horrendous crime he's experienced in his several decades in law enforcement. i'm live in glenside chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad thank you. in other news a woman claiming to men impersonated philadelphia police officers and tried to abduct her. she said it happened early this morning while she was walking along the 13,000 block of trevose road in the somerton section. the woman said the men identified themselves as police and tried to question her but they were not in uniform and never showed her a badge. police are not sure why these men approached the woman. the investigation continues tonight. authorities in west philadelphia are also searching for the person who killed a 16-year-old. sean d. jones was shot to death at his father's store on the 200 block of north 52nd street yesterday afternoon. sean and his brother came to america from jamaica in august to be with their father. the killer and the gun have not been found and the motive is not yet known.

>> a man was injured after a train crashed into a truck here at a railroad crossing in berks county. you can see the impact destroyed the truck after the crash here on route 724 in kumry township. the crossing is equipped with warning lights to signal a train's approach but not with crossing arms. investigators say the driver did not see the flashing lights. no one on the train was injured. >> all right from our delaware news room officials in wilmington have unveiled a new plan to address the recent rash of violent crimes there. since the start of the new year there have been at least four homicides. today wilmington's newly elected mayor mike purzycki and the police chief announced the new strategy. they'll have additional police officers patrol what they call hot spots. >> not only a human cost but it's an economic developments cost for our city. we can't cripple the city's economy because of the reputation for violence and so we just have to spend what it takes to get people out there to keep these numbers down, to

keep the statistical violence down. >> they will also loosen restrictions on overtime for members of the police department who work those hot spots on foot patrol. >> the nation is celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader martin luther king, jr. >> that's right. today visitors including vice president elect mike pence gathered to remember the civil rights leader at his memorial in washington, d.c. while thousands of people gathered in dallas for the annual martin luther king, jr. parade. and in south carolina the naacp hosted a commemorative rally at the statehouse there which included a peaceful march and a prayer service. >> here in the delaware valley tens of thousands of people donated their time including at the greater philadelphia king day of service. this is the largest event of its kind in there nation. "action news" reporter annie mccormick spoke to some of the volunteers here in north philadelphia. >> girard college was packed today. at least 5,000 people came out for this event that is now an

annual tradition. the keystone state boy choir opened the greater philadelphia martin luther king, jr. day of service at girard college. >> we started as i said with a thousand volunteers in 1996. 1.5 million volunteers later and an expected 145,000 volunteers here in the area today. >> reporter: founder of this events todd bernstein explained this year's theme. >> the overall theme is educational justice will be created 250 mini libraries for unconventional places in the city barbershops nail salons where kids go with their parentsism local leaders helped to build those libraries. >> it's a city wide campaign and our aim is to make sure all children can read on grade level by the time they enter fourth grade. >> reporter: here the day of

service went beyond education and covered needs from all over from the fight against hunger. >> the kids are encouraged to come to school because 33 goat eat but in turn they get an education and of course if they get an education they can get a job and if they get a job they can come back and take care of their familiesism to helping veterans. >> i think it's twofold. you have veterans who need services and we providing those services but we also have 10 veterans who are actually volunteering at this event so i like the fact we're engaging veterans to come out into the community. >> reporter: a health and wellness job fair offered assistance to people in need. today was all about people helping people. annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> volunteerism alive and well in wilmington delaware today as well to honor the life and legacy of dr. king. it was a special service project at the bellevue community center here. dozens of volunteers helping to renovate and decorate. young people helped paint the walls of the gymnasium while

others created arts and crafts designs to hang on the walls. all of this was to honor the memory of martin luther king, jr. in wilmington. in voorhees new jersey students and families volunteered to assemble packs for teenage here's are battling cancer. they were able to put together 500 kit that is will contain a pillow made from bandanas. the kits will be sent out next week. >> very nice. turning to accuweather now some milder conditions moving into our area. let's take you live outside sky6 hd showing us the rothman ice rink outside philadelphia city hall and some skaters enjoying the weather. temperatures are going slightly higher than normal but there is a chance of rain with that. meteorologist cecily tynan live at the big board with details. hey, cecily. >> hi, monica. we started off the day with bright sunshine. the clouds are here now and double scan live tracking some spotty rain showers moving across western and central pennsylvania. a wider view showing that the actual center of the storm t-the low pressure is near kansas city and like most

storms this season, this will be tracking up to our north and west. so, what that will do is put us in the warm sector of the storm so snow lovers this is going to be a rain event not a snow event. the problem, though, is that some areas, some of our northern counties could get a touch of freezing rain. so, a freezing rain advisory has been posted from 1 o'clock this morning until 10 o'clock for berks county, for lehigh valley, northampton county and the poconos. this is where we could get some areas of patchy ice on untreated surfaces. this is where temperatures will be dropping near freezing. not expecting a lot of rain. so, this is not a major ice storm, just some spotty light rain but overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning, some of the untreated surfaces there could be some slick spots. this week, though, temperatures will be trending well above average. not going to see a lot of sunshine. overall pretty damp and dreary. no snow in site. one day this week, though, should be gunfire. i'll tell you when coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick.

>> cecily we'll check back in later. thank you. starting tomorrow, there will be big changes to their laws governing beer sales in pennsylvania. you'll be able to buy six packs at more locations across the state. before this distributors could only sell cases 12 packs and kegs. the new law also allows bars to begin selling alcohol at 9:00 a.m. on sundays even if they're not selling food at the same time. because of another new law, for the first time hundreds of liquor stores in pennsylvania were opened today even though it's a federal holiday. >> all right. time right now for a check of that "action news" traffic report holiday monday. >> matt pelman telling us what's on tap from the "action news" traffic center on this holiday monday. matt. >> we've had a few issues brewing that's for sure. intact we were barley -- i mean barely able to squeeze by here rick and monica on the northbound boulevard at ninth street. there was crash. the good news is the crash is here no longer. still a little bit heavy on the northbound side especially as you wait for the traffic light to turn green but the crash just cleared out of the way. we're still watching some police activity though here in east falls.

>> break news overseas. turkish media reports say police have caught the alleged gunman who killed 39 people during that attack on a flight club in istanbul on new year's celebrations. report states the suspect was arrested in istanbul turkey. the islamic state group has claimed responsibility for the attack. and world news tonight will have the very latest for you coming up tonight at 6:30 after "action news." >> back here crews were back to work making repairs to that giant sinkhole that swallowed two cars in kensington. gas service was returned over the weekend to residents along the 2300 block of east boston street. the water may not be running until midweek. the department needs a few more days to fix a broken main and replace the lines weather permitting. >> health check now. a woman in allentown is featured in people magazine for her extraordinary weight loss. >> she lost an incredible 133 pounds and has managed to keep the weight off. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has more on the secret to her success.

next week. sources say the company will reveal that the battery is what caused some of those devices to explode. samsung's galaxy note7 started having issues the summer after there were reports the phone could catch fire and explode. the company still delayed issuing the recall for several weeks after that. a new report shows the staggering divide of the nation's -- make that the world's wealth distribution. eight men own the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the world. that includes tech giant bill gates and mark zuckerberg. the antipoverty tea group oxfam international says the eight men own as much wealth as the world's poorest 3.6 billion people combined. in the u.s. the richest 1 percent control 42 percent of the country's wealth. >> we have a new way to get the latest headlines from "action news" 24 hours a day. it is amazon's alexa. just ask the device for your news flash and this is what you'll hear.

>> time fore accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan here with the accuweather forecast for the week ahead. >> hi guys. we have an unsettled week but temperatures will be on the mild side. taking a look at penn's landing. we started the day with sunshine. clouds have rolled in. vain on the way. 40 degrees right now philadelphia, hit 42 degrees earlier today. that's 2 degrees above normal. cape may 38. trenton 39. allentown 39. and reading currently 38 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing the next system that will be affecting us low pressure across the plain states. that will be lifting up to the

north. so what will happen it will drag a warm front first through our region tonight and then there's a cold front that will be approaching late in the day tomorrow. that will bring us some waves of rain. temperatures in philadelphia well above freezing. 36 degrees tonight. but the problem, the lehigh valley and berks county. this is where temperatures will drop at or below freezing and that sets the stage for the potential for some light freezing rain. so, future tracker showing wee hours of the morning around 3:30 showers south of philadelphia and you'll notice the blue, that's the freezing rain. again, the far north and west counties. it will be lingering into the morning. i think this is somewhat overdone but we're looking at some rain in philadelphia, areas to the south, some of that freezing rain across the lehigh valley and the poconos and berks county and then by lunchtime a lot of this lifts north but then we have the cold front moving in late in the day. that means the evening commute tomorrow we likely will be dealing with some rain. despite all the clouds though

temperatures will rise above normal. philadelphia by 11 o'clock, 41 degrees. should make it up into the upper 40's tomorrow. so temperatures running about 8 degrees above normal and then we'll be climbing into the 50's. association the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow occasional rain and again temperatures pretty much on the mild side. 48 degrees. i think the steadiest rain will be late in the day about a quarter inch of rain. wednesday transition day. we wake up with a little bit of drizzle in the morning. then a lot of clouds. clouds break into some sunshine late in the day. a high of 52 degrees. thursday it's a day to get outside. it will be dry, partly sunny, very mild. temperatures running about 14 degrees above normal. 54 degrees. then we've got another system that could be moving in late in the day on friday from the southwest. that will bring us a lot of clouds as we head through the day. some rain breaking out into the evening. and the afternoon a high of 51 degrees. saturday perhaps a little bit of early morning rain, then clouds breaking for some sunshine and again

criminal charges. police believe she knew more than she told authorities. and having to pay a fine may be the least of your worries. what officials are considering. >> president-elect donald trump is days from being sworn in as the 45th president of the united states. on this martin luther king, jr. holiday he met with the son of the civil rights icon and continued to feud with georgia congressman john lewis. abc's stephanie ramos is live in washington, d.c. tonight with more on that story. stephanie. >> reporter: rick, you said it on this martin luther king, jr. day, the son of the civil rights leader saying he is a bridge builder working to bring america together and he said that just moments after meeting with president-elect trump. today at trump tower in new york city, president-elect donald trump making an appearance in the lobby after his meeting with martin luther king, iii king saying he and

selma to montgomery marches in the 1960's fighting for civil rights alongside martin luther king, jr. today lewis making his first appearance since the dustup not mentioning trump by name but calling the crowd to action. >> when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something and not be quiet. >> reporter: when asked what his father's message would be to president-elect trump, there was no mention of tweets russia's hacking or the healthcare law being repealed. instead king says that his father would be most concerned with the millions of americans living in poverty. in washington, stephanie ramos channel6 "action news." >> stephanie thank you. vice president joe biden is on his last foreign trip before leaving office. today he met with ukraine president. mr. biden called on the incoming trump administration to retain ukraine related sanctions against russia.

biden's comments indicated tha >> back here the wife of orlando club shooter omar mateen is now facing criminal charges herself stemming from that devastating mass shootin shooting. noor salman was taken into custody by fbi agents at her home outside san francisco. a person familiar with the investigation says she will be charged with obstruction of justice. in the wake of the june 12th shooting salman was interviewed by police about her husband's plans to carry out that rampage. 49 people were killed, dozens more were wounded. salman will be in federal court tomorrow. >> parts of the midwest are on alert tonight once again for icy conditions. this following a weekend storm that caused major damage in parts of oklahoma, missouri and kansas. branches covered with heavy thick ice were seen falling ago all across dodge city

kansas and in missouri there was up to an inch of ice on the trees and roads there. tens of thousands of residents lost power when lines snapped under the weight. at least fear people were killed in weather related road crashes in that part of the country. >> today we honored the life legacy and vision of dr. martin luther king, jr. on the day after what would have been his 88th birthday. >> across the country and right here in our region folks rolled up their sleeves for a day of service to help those in their community. >> the volunteers painted dozens of murals at harding middle school in frankford today and they let their imaginations run wild using bright colors and inspirational words like dr. king's dream. organizers say these murals make the school look like an inviting place to learn and inspire creativity. >> meanwhile a group of seventy nine haddonfield memorial high school spent their day of service making lunch for critically ill children and their families in camden. "action news" was at the ronald mcdonald house of southern new jersey. the teenagers definitely had a strategy going turn out a feast of grilled cheese chips

and drinks for residents who certainly appreciate it. >> it was a call to action for students families teachers and the community here at the brandywine spring school in wilmington. this day of service is all about having fun while supporting several locate local charities. kids participated in events like a clothing drive and letter writing campaign to the military. other charities that benefited were alex's lemonade stand and saint patrick's center. >> hundreds of people marched through the streets on this martin luther king, jr. day as the civil rights leader did many decades ago. chopper6 was over center city philadelphia as the march for a better america made its way from the president's house at sixth and market to the mother bethel ame church. organizers say they want to make sure that dr. king's message of equality is never lost. >> it was a flurry of activity in holland bucks on this day of service. students from the council rock school district put their fast fingers to work making care packages for veterans groups. they made blankets by hand for children at the local homeless

shelter and put together some hygiene kits for residents there. organizers say little gifts like these mean so much and truly make the difference in the lives of those who do not have. >> the recreational room at ziegler elementary school will be much more functional thanks to youth build philadelphia's day of service project here. they along with cinco bank employees installed solar guard panels. that way they can enjoy the rec room without too much sun getting in. the hallways also got a fresh coat of paint and some colorful decorations. >> ♪ >> wilmington delaware marked martin luther king's birthday with a march for peace. people of all ages carried peace messages as the procession wound from the anderson rec center to the b ready church that's where marchers went inside for a community celebration. >> world news tonight with david muir will have much more on today's mlk day remembrances across the

country as well as the arrest of omar mateen's wife and the war of words between donald trump and representative lewis. you can watch that tonight at 6:30 following "actio "action n" at 6:00. >> in other news a man was shot and killed in burlington county. detectives are hoping someone will come forward with answers about why he was targeted. authorities say 22-year-old nacim byrd was found outside a home in the unit block of placid lane in willingboro last night. he was rushed to our lady of lourdes hospital for treatment but died hours later. police are talking to witnesses but so far no suspects. a worker was killed today on the job in bensalem bucks county. chopper6 hd over the scene at samuel grossi and sons along state road. officials say a steel beam fell on the man. he was pronounced dead. the name of the 57-year-old victim is not being released yet. osha is now investigating the cause. >> new jersey's motor vehicle commission is planning a major crackdown on repeat toll violators. the commission reached an

agreement with new york's port authority to suspend the driving privileges of chronic toll cheaters. other toll agencies across the nation are seeking similar crackdowns as more and more toll booths are switching to cashless collections at bridges and tunnels. officials say toll evaders cost the state millions of dollars every year. that law abiding drivers will ultimately have to pay. >> speaking of driving let's see if it's fairly light out there on this holiday evening. >> matt pelman it is a holiday but there's still traffic isn't there. >> we like to help you cheat the delays not the tolls of course. let's tell you where they are because there are a few out there even on a holiday evening monica and rick. this is 95 right at the upside of the girard point bridge and there was a broken down truck here in the right lane for about a half hour. they just got it pushed out of the way but you're still looking at some heavy northbound traffic coming away from philadelphia international airport. what you're not looking at anymore is the police activity here in east falls along kelly drive at the falls bridge. everything reopened and the mlk drive also looks fine on this mlk holiday.

but there's a new crash along north broad street by the boulevard and don't forget we're getting ready for an opening at the tacony palmyra bridge in the next half hour. i would start heading for the betsy ross bridge instead. have a crash in lower providence along park avenue. sunny side or egypt road would be some alternates. there's one in middletown delaware along 301. i think i'd use cedar lane or route one as alternates. septa's route 13 trolley westbound has delays because of a disabled vehicle partially blocking the tracks. rick and monica over to you. >> the curtain is closing on the greatest show on earth. >> also california's drought situation has lessened because of the rain but it's created another problem like this one in a coastal town. we'll tell you all about it. adam. >> rick, we have a warm week ahead but we're going get through round of rain and a few icy patches for some late tonight early tomorrow morning. we'll talk about those warming temperatures and the freezing

keep on scratchin' >> no school today in radnor township. students were up early on this martin luther king day gathering hundreds of pounds of donated clothing books bedding and other items. all of this headed to cradles to crayons just one of the many events of the first district wide day of service in radnor. a south jersey church was bustling on this day of service. cub scouts high schoolers and athletes joined members of saint mary of lakes church in medford to make 2500 sands wind chills. the sandwiches plus snacks and fruit went into lunch bags to be delivered to south jersey organizations that feed the homeless and hungry. youngsters even gave the bags some personal decorations. >> well, the company which owns the ringling brothers circus says it wasn't just the loss of the elephant act which spelled the end they say the greatest show on earth fell victim to rising costs and

we are 28, yes 28 days away from pitchers and catchers reporting to clearwater and the phillies may have some much needed outfield help. phils set to sign outfielder michael saunters to a one year deal. law an all-star with toronto last season when he hit 24 homers and batted .252. he only hit .178 after the break. saunders will likely start in right field. another guy fighting to make the roster as an outfielder is roman quinn who today became the first major leaguer to host an instructional clinic for the phillies urban youth academy at the newly opened ryan howard training center. phils prospect who has a shot to make from aa to the opening day roster enjoyed helping these kids make some jumps of their own. >> it actually means a lot. it's the first time ever in my life there i did something like this on martin luther king day and it's a special day for me for the kids, too and i'm just happy to be out here.

>> hungry families in south jersey are getting much needed food tonight thanks to volunteers on martin luther king day. students lawyers basketball players even healthcare workers came together today at the food bank in pennsauken. they sorted and packaged donated food to distribute to 250 food pantries and food shelters all to help 196,000 residents who do need assistance. >> adam is here now with the accuweather forecast. it's a nice day to be off ton give back. started nicer and then clouds moved in. >> clouds came in and now we're tracking showers that could be a little icy in spots towards the lehigh valley late tonight early tomorrow morning. storm tracker six live double scan, the clouds are here. couple sprinkles up towards the poconos near monthsville and northern berks county but it's going to be a few more

hours before we start to see anything more significant start to drift in from the south and west. temperature-wise it's cool out there but average for january standards. 37 right now pottstown fleetwood slatington quakertown. these are the areas we'll have to watch late tonight. anything north of that pennsylvania turnpike there could be some icy patches developing after 1 o'clock in the morning through about 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. but if you're in central parts of bucks county, montgomery county, chester county, south it is all rain from start to finish. temperatures right around 40 right now in center city. upper 30's to around 40 through much of new jersey and in the state of delaware hockessin 37 and you head to the south smyrna at 41 degrees. there are the clouds and you can see again some of those spotty showers developing to the west and south. there is a warm front that's going to drift through and that's going to really move those temperatures up through the rest of the week well above average. and the associate low pressure attached to that front is in the center of the country here. that lifts into the great lakes and again that brings us

that pattern change that will last through pretty much that seven-day forecast. so, for tonight cloudy skies, a few spotty showers around. again with temperatures near that freezing point lehigh valley to the poconos, also including berks county, maybe extreme northern montgomery and also bucks county, there could be a little bit of patchy freezing rain especially on untreated surfaces but for the rest of us, temperatures far enough above freezing we won't have to worry. so as we look at it on future tracker 3:30 in the morning you see blue to their north and west. that could be some of that patchy freezing drizzle while we seaplane old rain in southern areas. it kicks up in intensity for the morning rush tomorrow 8 o'clock in the morning rain for the majority but you see blue popping up around the lehigh valley. could be again a little patchy ice especially on the car windshields and those secondary roads are also some of the sidewalks. so early on tuesday that icy patches to the north. otherwise tuesday itself as

the warm front comes through temperatures get up to 48 degrees with the steadiest of the rain coming in during the second half of the day. the low rides right between two areas of high pressure so on wednesday, as the low departs still a lot of clouds and warm at 52 degrees. but we'll have a northwesterly wind 12 to 20 miles an hour and maybe a few breaks of sun trying to develop here in the middle of the week. on the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, occasional rain tomorrow, after, again patchy ice very early in the morning north and west, 48 degrees. early drizzle wednesday morning giving way to a lot of clouds, maybe a few peeks of sun at 52. best day right now of the week would be thursday, partly sunny and very mild at 54 degrees. staying very warm on friday with another round of rain coming in in the afternoon and evening of 51. at this point the weekend looks like it is dry with some breaks of sun both days with temperatures on either side of 50 and then more rain coming in on monday of 52 degrees. these numbers are more typical of late march around here

terrifying armed holdup in a south philadelphia garage. it happened at 2:00 a.m. yesterday at the marine club condominiums at broad and washington. a 24-year-old woman was followed to the third level, then pulled out of her car at gunpoint. law men are searching now for a man and a woman suspect. live at the scene tonight "action news" reporter bob brooks. bob, do police have any surveillance video or other clues to track these two down? >> reporter: jim, good evening. certainly are a ton of cameras on this building but no word yet on what scanningly they exa. this young victim was followed into this building by the suspect. there was no one to stop him. there was no security to be found. all the residents we spoke with at the marine club condo complex had the same common complaint. and it's about a lack of security. >> security is horrible.
