we begin with breaking news from houston this morning about the health of former president george h.w. bush. >> we learned mr. bush is in the hospital right now where he's being treated for an undisclosed illness. a spokeswoman said the 92-year-old is doing well and responding to the treatment that he's getting right now in that hospital. she says that he's expected to be out in a few days. the former president was last seen in public earlier this month at a texans game. he spent some time on the field there with his son jeb. now, he was already not planning to attend the trump inauguration on friday due to health issues. so we'll stay on top of this story throughout the morning for you. >> we wish him well. we turn to the nation's next president donald trump. >> preinaugural festivities kicked off with a black tie dinner in washington as trump addressed hundreds of dims and donors and check out this tweet from vice president-elect mike pence sneaking in a backstage dance with wife karen. we have abc's lana zak on the inauguration and the political

battles intensifying for the incoming administration. >> we have great respect for your countries. >> reporter: mr. trump joked about the confirmation hearings and his pick for secretary of state, rex tillerson. >> again, he goes into the country, takes the oil, goes into another country -- it's tough dealing with these politician, right. he's going to be so incredible. >> reporter: the senate takes up tom price for health and human services amid growing concern about the potential repeal of obamacare. >> representative price's approach is moving us in the wrong direction. >> reporter: the congressional budget office estimates 18 million could lose their insurance. >> i am here because i have concerns about the repealing of the affordable care act. >> reporter: meanwhile, in an interview with fox news mr. trump discussed his tweeting habits something he previously said he loved. >> i don't like tweeting.

justice. she really does deserve justice and i'm glad he's caught. i'm glad -- now i can ask him why. why, why would you want to do this to our family and try to kill both of my babies? >> and the police chief said they used the late sergeant's handcuffs when arresting loyd. he is now being treated in a hospital for those injuries he got while being taken into custody. and a police detective is dead after being shot in suburban dallas. jerry walker was a veteran of the little elm police department and father of four. he was responding to the report of an armed man outside a house when he was shot. the suspected gunman has barricaded himself in that home. well, instead of spending nearly 30 more years behind bars, chelsea manning will be released from prison in may. that's after president obama commuted her lengthy sentence for giving u.s. secrets to wikileaks. she was known as bradley manning when she was arrested in 2010 and then manning has been convicted in a military court

and has attempted stew side twice while being held in a men's prison. manning asked the president for clemency last november. >> we had no indication of if or when we would be hearing from the white house regarding chelly manning's commutation application. we learned this afternoon along with everyone else and it was a very -- it was a very thrilling and hopeful moment for us. >> senator john mccain claims that it will undermine military discipline and encourage further acts of espionage and house speaker paul ryan calls president obama's move outrageous. the secret service has reached a $24 million settlement in a discrimination case. the 2001 or in 2000 rather 100 black members of the agency took that case to court. they claim they were repeatedly passed over for promotions in favor of less qualified white co-workers. the secret service is not admitting to any wrongdoing. former homeland security

secretary janet napolitano is in the hospital this morning experiencing complications during cancer treatment. the 59 served as head of homeland department during president obama's first term. she's now the president of the university of california. nepal tan know, we're told, is expected to be released from the hospital within the next day or so. tracking more rain and storms along the already saturated west coast. the first of a series of storms is slamming parts of washington, oregon and california before it's all over, portland could see some icy conditions. and heavy rain in southern california tonight could lead to some minor flooding, as well. up to two more feet of mountain snow is also possible. well, still ahead, help wanted. the major retailer adding 10,000 jobs. plus, a 31-year mystery solved. two sisters missing since t the '80s have been found alive. hear where investigators found them and who's now under arrest in connection with their disappearance. caught on camera, a gas line explosion lighting up the nighttime sky. we'll tell you where and what the results were.

well, police dash cam video capturing this gas line explosion near amarillo, texas. you can see the ball of fire erupt and the officer speeding toward the scene. flames shot more than 100 feet into the air. no one was injured. the fbi and the orlando, florida, police department have now released new pictures from inside the pulse nightclub following the attack there last june. the photos show bullet-riddled walls and damage in the bathrooms where many were hiding. the widow did not enter a plea yesterday on her charges. along the gulf those it's seen it's second deadly shooting this week. three people were killed in an

attack on a state prosecutor's office in cancun. it's too early to know if that attack and monday's shooting at a nightclub in playa del carmen are linked. one american was among the five victims of that nightclub attack. back in the u.s., lowe's has laid off thousands of assistant store managers in a restructuring effort and affect approximately 2400 employees which is less than 1% of that company's workforce. walmart is hiring. the world's largest retailer says it is adding 10,000 jobs as it opens new stores and expands existing locations across the country. those plans will also generate about 24,000 construction jobs. and some lucky bidder now owns a piece of donald trump's childhood. the president-elect's boyhood home in queen, new york, was sold in a sealed auction yesterday. the sale price has not been made public. trump lived in that 2500-square-foot tudor until he was about 4. >> when we come back an abc exclusive. what the 18-year-old who just discovered she was kidnapped as an infant, what she says about

houston, san francisco and boston. and speaking of texas a woman there appears in court today in rhode island. a texas woman accused of kidnapping her two daughters more than 30 years ago. >> prosecutors say elaine yates took her children after an argument with her husband. their daughter, kimberly and kelly are in their 30s and have families of their own in the houston area. these are age progression photos. their father is now hoping for really feel bad, but we got to find out what's going on. >> so, elaine yates had changed her name but not her appearance in all these years so after police got a tip, they were able to match her identity using public records and her social media presence. there was also this high-profile case. a woman accused of kidnapping a baby from a jacksonville hospital 18 years ago is now in a florida jail. gloria williams arrived from
