the sheer force of it pushing snow through the windows of the four-star rigopiano hotel shattering glass and blocking rooms, stopping rescuers from going in. this man, one of at least two survivors saved this morning. authorities saying at least 30 people are still missing with reports of several dead. they reached the place and saved two people, the chief of italian civil protection says, now they're working to bring other means of transportation. they're checking the conditions that are prohibitive, even for technical rescue. alpine rescue teams reaching the hotel by helicopter and on foot. after initially being blocked by fallen trees and heavy snow overnight. the popular ski resort located about 30 miles from the coastal

city of piscara, a strong earthquake hit there including one with a 5.67 magnitude. many fear still trapped under all that snow it's a race against time to reach them. teams with vital rescue equipment are at this hour still trying to reach the scene. robin. >> all right, lama, thank you. of course, we'll stay on top of the story. we'll get the latest on the trump inauguration. just one day away and the president-elect spent last night at several celebrations in the capital before stopping off at his own hotel for dinner. abc's cecilia vega in washington with all the details. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning to you. you're right. just one day to go. donald trump has been flying from new york here to washington, every night to attend these big party, but as of tonight, he is here in washington for good. >> president-elect donald trump landing in his soon-to-be home waving and hitting the inaugural party circuit crossing town in a motorcade attending exclusive black-tie dinners including one for his vice president mike pence and topping it all off with a stop at trump's washington hotel, just a few

blocks away from his future home, the white house. inside, trump was showered with applause. now, trump preparing for his biggest audience yet, tweeting this photo of himself at what he calls his winter white house mar-a-lago, writing his speech on his desk next to him, a bronze eagle. that speech about 20 minutes long. trump has been studying past inaugural addresses and practicing daily. the themes, uniting the country and america first. aides calling it very personal. >> the first line is thanking everybody, all of the presidents and including, by the way, president obama and michelle who have been victoria beckham nice. >> ivanka trump also ready for the big day tweeting out the official invitation saying, the amazing journey is just getting started. she and the whole trump family are expected to spend trump's first night as president at the white house. >> barron and melania and all of my children will be in the white

house, which is sort of a tradition. >> reporter: but who will not be participating in the festivities? more than 60 house democrats, never before in history have so many skipped a swearing in. >> i'm not asking for his birth certificate. but he has to build the legitimacy. >> reporter: hillary clinton's going. if she can go why can't you. >> she was the first lady and she's going as the wife of bill clinton. >> reporter: she's the woman who ran against him and lost. >> it's going to be hard for her. >> reporter: and donald trump is expected to use the lincoln bible during his swearing in while taking the oath of office. only two presidents have done that, president obama and lincoln himself and, of course, george, that big concert tonight and trump will be speaking on the steps of the lincoln memorial. >> and, cecilia, then he hopes to hit the ground running right after he takes the oath. >> reporter: yeah, this has been a promise of donald trump's. he has said he will issue executive orders. we expect those to largely -- the immediate ones at least to largely reverse some president obama policies. we do know now on friday immediately after taking office

he will issue four to five executive actions, the first one we're told will be largely proceed surely things like security for the first family. >> that is a tradition. cecilia, thanks very much. over to capitol hill where trump cabinet neuman nominees facing another day of hearings and rick perry up for energy secretary in the hot seat and our congressional correspondent mary bruce tracking it all from the capitol. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the whirlwind of hearings continues with a familiar face, former texas governor rick perry will be making his case to lead the agency he once wanted to eliminate and once famously forgot. that's a move according to his prepared remarks he's expected to say he regrets. also this morning, democrats are expected to take aim at treasury secretary nominee steve mnuchin. the goldman sachs executive under fire for his role in the housing crisis. he's been accused of rushing to foreclose on homeowners. george. >> there were some delays with some nominees getting their papers in and democrats slowing the process down a bit, as well so there won't be many cabinet

places it's cause of bloodshed, here we have no dislocation. now, that wasn't entirely true but it was close enough. >> but it is a moment. it is a moment for our country. >> right. >> we'll have you back, talk a little more about some things later. right now to michael. >> all right, thank you, robin. now, let's get to the latest on former president george h.w. bush and his wife barbara's health. both are in a houston area hospital this morning and our chief white house correspondent jon karl has more and, jon, what do we know about their condition? >> reporter: good morning, michael. well, both bushes remain in the hospital this morning. it is believed to be the first time in their 72 years of marriage that both have been hospitalized at the same time. the former president was admitted back on saturday for shortness of breath. but -- and he was expected to be released actually today but yesterday he took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted into intensive care. his spokesperson tells abc news, quote, president bush was admitted to the icu to address

an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. he actually had to be sedated yesterday so they could perform a procedure to clear his airway. as for mrs. bush, she was admitted yesterday for fatigue and for coughing. i tell you, even before all of this, they had written a remarkable letter to donald trump. this letter right here, george bush wrote to donald trump, was delivered to him, trump told me earlier this week. it says, my doctor says if i sit outside in january, it will likely put me six feet under. same for barbara. i guess we're stuck in texas but he said we will be with you and the country in spirit. so although he said that he could not make the inauguration, he even offered to help donald trump in any way possible. trump responded with a tweet, saying, looking forward to a speedy recovery for george and barbara bush, both hospitalized. thank you for your wonderful letter. so, interesting words from the former president. >> and so they're not going to make the inauguration but their

building in iran's capital. back here in this country the largest student loan collector is facing a lawsuit accused of cheating millions of borrowers. navient once part of sally may allegedly made it harder to repay loans by processing pays incorrectly and deceived borrowers at every step, it is alleged. a sheriff's deputy in rural north dakota has been killed in a shoot-out with a suspect. this all comes one day after a police detective near dallas was killed. nationwide the number of officers shot on duty has risen dramatically in the last year. and police in new hampshire say they cannot believe the driver of this honda civic was able to walk away from this crash. they say the car lost control and slid underneath, you see it there, under a tanker truck and got pinned against a concrete barrier. the driver somehow managed to climb out of the window. well, the newest members of baseball's hall of fame have been announced. ivan "pudge" rodriguez broke down when he got the call

released "a dog's purpose" being investigated after this video obtained by tmz became public. in the video a german shepherd named hercules appears to be struggling to stay out of a pool of rushing water. a handler seemingly trying to force the dog in. the dog then seems to go underwater. >> cut it. >> reporter: before being rescued. the response to the video swift, peta calling for a boycott of the film. american humane, an organization that ensures safety on set hiring an investigator to look into the matter and suspending the safety rep who worked on that film and actor josh gad who provides the voice for the dog in "a dog's purpose" taking to twitter saying i have reached out to the production team and studio to ask for an explanation for these disturbing images. and while the movie studio is not commenting, producers of the film speaking to tmz saying on the day of the shoot hercules did not want to perform the stunt portrayed on the tape.

so the amblin production team did not proceed with filming that shot but the stunt seems to have been completed eventually. the amblin production company telling tmz, hercules is happy and healthy but this morning many questioning that troubling video. and those producers at amblin, steven spielberg's production company said it had been rehearsed so hercules would be comfortable with the water but on the day of the shoot hercules wasn't having it. >> do you blame the dog? goodness. >> a lot of questions. >> boy, thank you. >> ginger. >> so let's talk about sacramento. 63-mile-per-hour wind gusts was recorded there and you can see the trees, it's lifted up this camper. this is all with the first of many storms to come for the west. i-90 in washington state shut down for more than 80 or up to 80 miles so north bend and still shut down at last check. this is southern washington much more coming especially for the south los angeles in the many times up top 9 inches.

perry testifying today. former texas governor making the case to leave the department he once famous aimed to eliminate. another day of confirmation hearings under way on the eve of donald trump's inauguration and big celebration at the lincoln memorial today. the president-elect will kick things off and there will be appearances from toby keith and three doors down. we begin with new developments about the woman abducted at birth the accused kidnapper who raised her for 18 years appeared in court and this morning new court documents are raising questions. abc's eva pilgrim is still there in jacksonville for us again this morning. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. these court documents are laying out a time line of who knew what and when. detectives reporting witnesses say this secret was out more than a year and a half ago, well before authorities traveled from here in florida to south carolina. this morning, new details shedding light on how

investigators say this woman's 18-year-old secret finally unraveled. >> no bond be set on count number one, the kidnapping charge. >> reporter: 51-year-old gloria williams charged with kidnapping a newborn in 1998 raising her as her own. did anything ever kind of tip you off to it? >> i can't think of anything off hand, no. >> at what point did you find out. >> i don't want to discuss that. >> can you talk about what brought it all around? >> i don't want to discuss that either. >> reporter: 18-year-old alexis manigo couldn't give us those details concerned that anything she says could eventually be used against the woman she still calls mom. >> they want me to hate her and it's not in me to. >> reporter: but newly released court documents now showing that alexis may have found out the truth approximately a year and a half ago. two separate tips last year first sending investigators from jacksonville, florida, to

walterboro, south carolina. earlier this month detectives interviewing two witness, one saying williams confessed to him that she stole a baby from a hospital in jacksonville. the other, that alexis told her she had been kidnapped from a hospital in jacksonville, her mother even telling her that she was kamiyah mobley, the name given to her by her birth mother. police say they discovered the birth certificate and social security card alexis used in high school were both fraudulent. according to the affidavit, her social taken from a virginia man who died in 1983. >> how do you go to school when you don't have a legitimate social security number? you know, how do you go to the doctor and these are things that a kid is not going to know. but the system should know. >> reporter: and gloria williams is being held in jail here in jacksonville, florida. expected back in court in february and has not entered a plea on any charges. robin. >> eva, thank you. for more let's bring in dan

abrams. a lot to talk about. >> yeah. >> so, allegedly alexis knew more than a year ago, told a friend about it and some people are wondering, there's no way she could face charges here. >> right. so typically it is not required to report a crime, right? you're not a criminal for not reporting a crime. but if someone was an accessory after the fact, what does that mean? if they helped to conceal it in some way, shape or form, someone else could be charged. do i think that's going to happen? no. do i think there's any chance that she will be charged for helping to conceal this? absolutely not. look, from -- you just look at it from her perspective as an 18-year-old even if she knew a year and a half ago, she's the victim here. you know, she is a victim. she was stolen away from a hospital. she was brought up by the only mother that she knew and so you have to sympathize with her plight. doesn't mean you have to sympathize with the woman who brought her up. >> no, and there's very little

sympathy other than from alexis herself but other people are like, hey, you snatch a child from their parents, there's just no excuse for that so it's not surprising that bail was not set. >> that's right. so, you know, bail was not set on the kidnapping charge. there was another charge where bail was set which is irrelevant since bail was not set but i think what's going to be really interesting in this case is the potential sentencing, right? it's pretty clear that she's going to be guilty. is she going to plead not, et cetera, we'll see. but to hear her testify at the sentencing on behalf of the woman that brought her up. >> alexis, you're talking about. >> yeah, yeah, so the question there is going to be how much does a judge give that? how much does that matter to a judge? i think it's going to matter a little. i do think it's going to matter to hear how well she brought up this child and yet i still expect she's going to get a serious and very stiff sentence because there is almost no worse crime than this. >> you're right about that. all right. dan, thanks very much. coming up in just two minutes we have that abc news exclusive of president-elect trump's three oldest children.

donald trump's two grown sons, donald jr. and eric, who instead will be entrusted with running their father's vast business empire, a move slammed by critics concerned it does not adequately guard against conflicts of interest. and how is this going to work exactly. you said you're in each other's office seven types a day. how will you all of a sudden pull the plug on that. >> my father has the biggest responsibility of any person arguably on the planet and that's to run the united states of america. his focus is going to be running this country. >> reporter: and that reality along with the weight of its responsibility is something don jr. believes may not yet have fully sunk in for his father. do you think it might happen when your father puts his hand on his childhood bieb sfll yeah. >> and takes that oath. >> i imagine it will. i don't think anyone could become that cynical that wouldn't affect him. going around the country and seeing all these people who have been, you know, either disaff t disaffected from politics but

have been through so much to be able to go through it and see them and talk to them, it was just a culmination of just incredible and moving experiences. >> and, deborah joins us now, as well. boy, ivanka remained so composed when you asked her that question about the first lady. you could tell she doesn't like that comparison. >> it rankles her. she doesn't shoot from the lip as much but she did say privately she finds it a bit sexist. why couldn't two women as she said, two empowered women come to washington and make their mark so she doesn't like that but she does accept the fact she's probably going to have a big impact and she wants to but she wants to figure that out slowly over time. >> unique role. you also got a little more insight into that friendship with chelsea clinton. >> she says they are friends and remain friends in spite of the bitter campaign and she says she'll probably go to her for advice but that friendship remains intact in spite of what has gone on before. >> when you were talking to don jr. and about that emotion his father will feel when he puts his hand on the bible, not

a really real soft-hearted guy usually. >> no, the president-elect infamously said he hasn't cried since he was a small child. don jr. says that might be the moment when we see the president-elect, now the president tear up because that will be such a moment fraught with emotion and, by the way, the two sons are unabashed hunters. they love hunting. they've been big defendants of the nra. their secret service nicknames, marksmen and mountaineer. >> there you go. how about do they weigh in on their dad's tweeting. >> you bet they did. both were unabashedly defending him. even when i read the words aloud liar, loser, sleazebag, don jr., you have five kids. do you let your kids say words like this to each other, my father is telling the truth, he said. he has to call out the lying media when he sees it and if he can talk directly to the people and cut out the media even using that language they support it. >> ivanka admits she weighs in from time to time on that tweeting like any other kid would and she says, sometimes he listens. sometimes he doesn't.

and anglais. that's about to change. when trump becomes president he's talking about putting policies in place that have many canadians concerned because he's going to lower taxes. he's going to deregulate oil and gas and may put border taxes in mace and trudeau has gone the other direction and added carbon tacks and made tacks much higher personally and many canadians are beginning to realize, uh-oh we didn't realize trump was coming and who will negotiate with donald trump? that's what is so interesting about the canadian situation. a lot of angst now and they're looking for new leadership. >> doesn't he already sound like a candidate? >> i was going to say, okay, speaking of new leadership you have to face off against 13 other candidates. >> yes, i do. >> what made you throw your hat into the ring? this is a big decision for you. you're a busy man with a lot of different things going on. >> you know, i'm not a politician. i don't owe anybody any favors. i've never been involved in politics and if you're watching what's happening all around the world, it's not politics as

pneumonia-related breathing problems. mrs. bush is being treated for bronchitis. and final security preparations are being made for president-elect trump's inauguration. 3500 law enforcement officers from around the country will be sworn in as special deputies today to guard against any threats and protesters who may try to discorrupt the ceremony. and more of trump's cabinet nominees face confirmation hearings today. including former texas governor rick perry for energy secretary. perry once called for the energy department to be eliminated but now says he regrets saying that. and trump's choice for health secretary told senators he wants to prevent americans from losing their health care but tom price stopped short of agreeing with rump's promise to provide insurance for everyone. meanwhile, trump is expected to nominate former georgia governor sonny perdue for agriculture secretary. we have a health alert for women. the government has issued new guidelines on what types of fish are safe for pregnant and breast-feeding women. most of them are safe. but experts say those to avoid

first lady of the united states, all eyes are on melania trump. but before there was 1600 pennsylvania avenue or the new york city penthouse inspired by versailles, this was melania's home, a modest apartment building in the town of sevnica and reveals humble beginnings and the start of her unconventional road to the white house. born into communism in 1970, a young melania seen here grew up spending much of her childhood on this playground and in the halls of her elementary school. it was here where she caught the high of slovenia fashion photographer stane jerko. it's these photos that sent her to paris, milan and new york where she met trump at a fashion party in 1998 an encounter she described to barbara walters. >> he asked for my number and i said i will not give you my number so if you give me your

numbers, i will -- i will call you. >> reporter: the couple wed in 2005 at trump's mar-a-lago estate and welcomed son barron a year later. while her husband crisscrossed the country in a bid for the white house, melania stayed behind to take care of him, a decision she discussed with george last october. >> keep him balanced and i just want to have him out of the spotlight for now. >> reporter: melania taking center stages at the republican national convention where she was greeted with a standing ovation. but then widely criticized for he speech and its similars to the one michelle obama gave in 2008. the 46-year-old already making history as the first foreign born first lady since john quincy adams' wife louisa. >> she's only been an american citizen for ten years. i think that that's a very interesting way of us to look at this job. she'll have different perspectives on that. >> and in recent decades the role of the first lady has changed dramatically and only time will tell how melania trump

if she chooses to use it and she did. lady bird johnson and subsequent first ladies have, as well. it's expected. >> they all have to some degree. eleanor roosevelt was more public and modern communications but martha washington lobbied the congress for veterans' benefits. >> way back then. i think it's safe to say that her husband has been a n nontraditional candidate. >> i think that's safe to say. >> people want to know will she be nontraditional or follow along as we've seen before, make her own rules? >> she'll make her own rules because there are no rules. it doesn't come with a job description, first lady and it also comes with a great deal of suspicion. people worry, you know, she has all that power and she can't be fired and she's a woman and all of that worries people. but i think that she will find a way to find her voice in the role. it's tough for her because she's never been in politics. she's never been first lady of a state which was hard for michelle obama, frankly, but i think that she'll find her way.

>> it's taken them all a little bit of time. >> right, exactly. >> okay, that is how we perceive her publicly. privately what is the role of first lady? >> the president is the commander in chief. in so many ways she is the caretaker in chief. she takes care of the family and we saw michelle obama take care of sasha and malia as mother but vitally important for her to take care of her son and she's staying here in new york to provide some continuity for him before moving to washington. and to take care of her husband too. nancy reagan famously sort of monitored her husband's schedule to ensure he wasn't being overtaxed or overburdened. that's what first ladies do as well. >> private role of the first lady also being the only person who can tell the president the truth and whether that's true in this marriage, who knows. >> that's a wife's role. >> a wife's role. >> okay, well, mark, cokie, i'll see you there in washington. >> we'll be together. >> tonight, you can see an

my man, you've been in the business for many years now. you've done this, you've done that. we've never seen something like this. why did you come up with this type of idea? >> well, you know, a big fan of theater, i just -- i love theater and so i -- you know, i wanted to merge theater and film and so i had this thing that i wrote based on something that actually happened to me and i thought, you know, be cool to do this in realtime. the time that i thought you couldn't really do something in realtime, but since then the technology developed and so i thought, yeah, i'm going to shoot this in under 100 minutes in realtime but then i thought, well, where is the theater in that because there's no live audience. well, that was the thought that has since caused me many sleepless nights. including last night. yeah, and so now that's what we're trying.

>> so maybe you're sleep deprived but look so calm despite the fact you have 30 actors, 14 locations, 65 minutes streamed to 500 movie theaters. what is it that keeps you up? >> just a lot of technical things going on and any of those things goes wrong, it could spell disaster for us. i feel great about the actors, i feel great about the story. i think there's some really funny stuff in this that people will get a good chuckle at and i suspect there's a lot of your viewers right now who are not wanting to tune in to see this thing succeed. like a car crash. >> either way i think it's going to be remarkable. you mentioned something about woody about the technical. i read you've done two rehearsals so tar and in one of them you lost the feed. the live feed. so what is the backup plan if that happens? >> well, i'm probably going to

jump off the bridge into the thames. >> not much of a plan there. >> no. we -- you know, what we'll do is we filmed one last night that went all the way through and if, god forbid, we do lose the feed we'll have to just fall back on that one and feel dreadful about it but i'm hoping that won't happen. >> you mentioned earlier -- >> by the way, i want to thank you guys. i want to thank you guys for being the first guys to talk about this and for, you know, being interested in the idea. it really means a lot to me. thank you. never ever coached in a negative way and that meant everything. [ applause ] >> i had a lot of -- a lot of great coaches growing up in mississippi and louisiana. my college coach at southeastern. but it's not somebody that one coach that i wanted to play for and i never applied and i should have was pat summitt. i really wanted to play for pat summitt. i've been thinking about her a lot. [ applause ] just this week on sunday the clinic, the alzheimer's clinic bearing her name opened. it wasn't just with her, but she was about building young women, it wasn't just building your game but your personality. >> what about you? >> i had two. my high school coach ron hoover, he kicked me off the team my junior year. i got suspended because i was in the library studying and this lady said i was being insubordinate. first of all, i had to look up the word. what that meant and i really wasn't but it was a rule on the

team if you get suspended you get kicked off the team and i was the guy, i was the quarterback. that broke my heart. but it really set me straight from this on i understood teamwork, i understood being a leader and everything and the second one was my pop warner coach. coach dave. we had to have a certain gpa to remain on the team. his wife was unbelievable, helen, and when i got selected -- when i got selected to the hall of fame, i flew him to the super bowls, everywhere, and he was so excited that he had a heart attack that week and he passed. and that broke my heart because what he meant to me, the first ti time i ever flew on a plane and they exposed me to so much that he and his wife was a dear blessing to my life. i wouldn't be here without them.
