the wind flu a sign of blew a sa window and struck a man who died. bob brooks is live in ocean city and walter perez standing boo any ship bottom and sarah bloomquist live in philadelphia with the inland situation but let's begin with the late word from accuweather and meteorologist cecily tynan. cecily. >> and jim, double scan live showing the storm system that had been that tremendous wind maker for our region is still well down to the south. the actual center of the storm is off the coast of north carolina. the heaviest band of rain has now lifted north of philadelphia. however, i do want to point out we have more developing bands of rain right here and that and will continue to push towards our region as we head through the evening hours. but really the big story with this storm, the intense wind. we're talking about proper cal storm force winds today. cape may the peak wind gusts 53 miles an hour, kick kerr

ton 60, downingtown 53 and philadelphia peak wind gusts 46 miles per hour. this combined with heavy rain softening the ground bringing down a lot of trees. now, the national weather service over the past few minutes has downgraded the high wind warning for interior sections down wind advisory. this is for really delaware, philadelphia, counties, all of delaware state interior south jersey. this is in effect until 8 o'clock. this means we could have wind gusts up to about 40 miles an hour. along the coast this is the main concern that high wind warning continues until midnight for wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour and when you get those strong winds really piling up the water, you get the coastal flooding, the coastal flood warning continues for not only tonight's high tide cycle, tomorrow morning, moderate to minor. more details on that. also some icing in the poconos coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. jim. >> cecily thank you. let's begin our storm tore of the jersey shore. there. >> reporter: jim what a nasty day we've had down here. the rain, the wind relentless. a lot of property around ocean city has been damaged though right now things are died down just a little bit. though they died down now we're dealing with this. take a look behind me. you can see the street lights shining down on water. these are the streets. many here now flooded under water. the roof of the pavilion motor lodge came peeling back no match for the high speed wind gusts today. power lines were severed in multiple spots around town trash bins and debris knocked all over the street. the nor'easter coming up the coast slammed into ocean city today. with steady rain all day and now the high tide has set in, several streets respect submerged. >> i think it's miserable right now. you would almost it rather snow. it wind can be brutal. >> reporter: when you combine high speed wind and rain we didn't speak with anyone who wanted to be outside. >> it is a very cold rain. i was out there working and temperatures were pretty i

thought warm but the wind chill was pretty intense. >> reporter: the white capped waters have brought in significant tidal flooding and officials say they've barricaded several streets for a reason. that's to protect your property. >> the most important thing is to move vehicles from some of the streets that typically experience flooding. >> reporter: now, where i'm at right now bay avenue and third street and jim as far as i can see down third street, the water goes. reporting live in ocean city bob brooks. jim. >> let's switch to walter perez on long beach island in ship bottom. walter what about flooding off the bay. >> reporter: what a difference an hour makes. life look at long beach boulevard. the winds have died down just aish will. at 5 o'clock we were on central avenue where there was some flooding and the back bay there was on the brink of overflowing. we had to move the truck, though, to long beach boulevard because that part of

central avenue is now under water. and as you can see, this road is not doing well, either. before that the city rain arrived strong winds were already whipping along long beach island. some heel who live and work here took time to check things out along the beach and hope for the best. >> i'm worried about the flooding that's probably going get in the next day over here and the wind is just unbelievable. i got pelted with sand and water. >> reporter: the good news is a local official says they're only expecting minor to moderate flooding across most of lbi but joe valio says he's not going to rest until this system moves out. >> you have to watch the situation. it's fluid. things are happening, the storm is still really developing so we're -- you know, we're not sure, you know, at this point, you know, how it's going to ends up. >> reporter: he says as usual, the most vulnerable properties are the ones along the back bay where high tide arrives at about 7:30 tonight.

long beach island residents say they know all too well this storm could have been much worse. >> thank god it's not snow. this is a usual thing for us so it's nothing new. sandy was a big one but we're okay. >> reporter: all right, back out live now bear in mind this kind of flooding is relatively routine for parts of long beach island during storms. the expectation remains for moderate flooding and moderate beach erosion in spots across this part of the jersey shore. but we will certainly keep an eye on the situation as it develops on long beach island. reporting live from ship bottom walter perez channel6 "action news." jim. >> walter, thank you. below pinning a 60-year-old man killing him. this was just one of a handful of rain and wind related problem some more serious than others around the region today. the sign was hanging on the side of a row home along old york road in the roosevelt boulevard. police believe a 60-year-old man thought to be an employee was struck when high winds blew the sign down. it was and pinned against a car and pronounced dead by medics at one:04 this afternoon. here in center city, the winds were whipping all day as a cold rain fell. >> chilling to your bones and i did not dress accordingly. >> i even went back to put on a couple extra layers but they were not successful and i'm freezing. >> reporter: the wind was enough to take down part of this 12,000-foot mural at broad and race. debris rained down on parked cars in the hahnemann hospital parking lot below. nobody was hurt. in aston delaware county, a tree fell on a house on beatrice lane just before

pennsylvania and the new jersey turnpikes in bristol pa and burlington city, new jersey. that bridge has been closed because of a broken beam and it will be closed for at least a couple of weeks. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live on the pennsylvania side. john, how bad is the impact of this shutdown? >> reporter: well, out of the box, jim it impacts 40,000 users of the turnpike daily users of the turnpike. they are then dean toured on other streets and highways so it impact those drivers and today you can add in the weather. it certainly didn't help. traffic headaches reported today in part due to bridge detours and trees brought down by today's storms as samuel wilkins. >> slow, very slow. high to be to work at 12 dock clock today. i'm just getting around and look what time it is now. >> reporter: you're more than two hours late. >> yes, more than two hours law. the storm will soon pass put the bridge detours will remain for at least weeks officials say. this is what engineers are up against, a complete fracture in a critical 14-inch i-beam.

>> a new report says that a philadelphia neighborhood known for its diversity has widespread discrimination within the lgbt community based on race and gender. black and brown men and women say they have been denied attendance admittance to gay nightclubs. the report focused on this neighborhood. the city's human relations commission says the two of the most popular night spots eye candy and woody's are the biggest offenders. it's calling on 11 different clubs to receive anti-discrimination training

and to change their conduct. >> strategic long term enforcement plans as well as a public commitment by community leaders to hold places accountable is needed to reduce or eliminate racism and discrimination. >> mayor jim kenney says the city is putting its foot down over this behavior and will be monitoring progress. a school in camden county is that warning people about a.m. scam using its name. camden catholic high school says this letter is faith the school is not seeking donations for special education students to attend a feel trip. cherry hill police are asking anybody who receivers this letter to please contact them. the montgomery county court of commonables has appointed ken lawrence to fill the vacancy on the county board of commissioners. the temple university executive will fill the seat left vacant by josh shapiro who is now pennsylvania's attorney general. lawrence will be sworn in on wednesday making him the first african-american commissioner montgomery county history.

jury selection began today for pennsylvania state senator larry farnese accused of bribing a democratic party official. prosecutors say that in 2011 farnese paid $6,000 so that ellen chapman's daughter could take part in a study abroad program. in exchange, chapman threw her support behind farnese and he maintained his position as ward leader. farnese is charged with conspiracy mail and wire fraud.

now mount pocono just north of jim thorpe and we have winter weather advisory for the poconos through tonight into tomorrow until 11 o'clock. major problem with icing and also the potential for some snow. but really the winds have been the main story. we had wind gusts up to 63 miles an hour today down the shore. they've eased off a bit. philadelphia 22 miles an hour gusts right now wilmington 39, cape may 44 but that high wind warning continues at the shore until midnight tonight. you could still have some some pretty intense wind gusts. right now temps well above freezing. a january nor'easter and we're talking about rain here. philadelphia 38. cape may 43. trenton 37. allentown 36. that wintry weather couldn't find to the poconos 32 degrees. it's not out of the question you get a little bit of sleet mixing in as the heavy rain pulls down. cold air high in the atmosphere that's dynamic cooling. the center of the storm is way down to the south off the

coast of the carolinas getting a break from the rain. you can see another band of rain. this will you be pushing up to the northeast really off shore through the overnight hours but even tomorrow we'll be dealing with a lot of clouds and some lingering drizzle. tonight it's a wet and dreary night. the winds continue to ease overnight. philadelphia 36, allentown 34, cape may 40, wilmington 36 and trenton also 36 degrees. so, future tracker showing if you're heading out tonight you definitely want the rain gear. 11:30 still some showers around, still some of that icing across the poconos. it continues in the wee hours of the morning, two. ooh 30 in the morning still some showers. tomorrow morning it's not going to be quite as nasty as today. the winds not as strong but clouds and showers at 8 o'clock and even into the afternoon we're dealing with some lingering clouds and showers and even a few snow flurries up across the lehigh valley and the poconos and then finally high pressure develops on wednesday. association down the coast this is the major concern, strong winds early easing after midnight.

support homeless youth in the region. this morning mcdonald's executives presented a $20,000 check to the covenant house in the germantown section of philadelphia. the company donated proceeds from each cup of coffee sold in southeastern pennsylvania restaurants on national coffee day, that was back in september. covenant house is the shelter that serves homeless youth. abc's "world news tonight" with david muir is next on channel6.
