pennsylvania and new jersey turnpikes. >> "action news" reporter bob brooks is live in bristol township tonight with the new developments. bob. >> reporter: monica and rick, eight 80-foot tall solutions to be exact. they're towers that are going to be used to prop up the bridge. take a look behind me. you can see the lights are on, construction is under way as the work continues to figure out a way to fix the bridge. it's been one full week now in the i276 delaware river turnpike bridge is still closed. unfortunately we continue to hear about how this not only is causing major commuter headaches but also a loss of money. >> my job is -- we have to either go out of our way to trenton or we have to go down into philly. either way it's costing a lot more money time and gas. >> reporter: today we got an update in process to have it reopened. eight 80-foot towers like these will be placed under the bridge and needs to be propped up to go on it to work. we spoke with one of the

project engineers this afternoon. >> eventually what we hope to do is apply some force back into the bridge with jacks and jack the truss back into placement the towers will be placed under the section where this fracture in and a truss was found by a crew painting the bridge last week. that's specifically located in between palmer and wood avenues. we spoke with a few neighbors around the bridge who said they've heard it's so unstable that it might come down and that certainly is a scary thought but when i asked officials about that today they say that is simply not the case. >> the way we have it we feel it's stable as is without traffic on it. >> reporter: on daily basis 42,000 drivers depend on the bridge both ways. after taking alternative routes like the much narrower 413 bridge for a week now, they would like for presidential candidate to speed up. >> it'to -- progress to speed up. >> reporter: they hope to have a timetable in another week. they say they're still figuring out what caused the truss to split. >> once we get that repaired we'll be able to put it back

proudly showing off a bust of winston churchill on display in his oval office. but as the first world leader visited the white house looming large the first world leader to cancel their visit to the white house. president trump and mexico president pena nieto spoke for an hour friday morning mr. trump calling it a very, very friendly conversation but tensions remain. the mexican president's office said in a statement the two sides agreed to not talk publically about who will pay for the trump administration's border wall. the white house statement did not mention that. karen travers abc news, the white housely. >> from our delaware news room officials are vowing to fund initiatives aimed at improving the lives of young people in wilmington. dam some of delaware's top lawmakers spoke about a report published today by the cdc. that report comes after a study of wilmington's recent spike in violence. it outlines how the city can help cut back on the crime rate. today officials vowed to

implement the recommendations including a year round career program for at risk teenagers supporting more outreach programs and creating a special youth wellness center. new castle county police made an arrest in the murder of a 25-year-old. jerry blank ken ship surrendered to police yesterday. detectives were investigating the death of jacqueline ing man. police found evidence to connect blank ken ship to the hurt. plank ken ship faces first degree murder and weapons charges being held more than a million dollars bail. >> a review of philadelphia schools shows there's a need for billions of dollars to repair more than 300 facilities. officials say one of them is dunbar elementary school in north philadelphia. they found it has a leaky roof which frequently disrupts classes when there's a heavy rain. the school's principal talked about her concerns. >> we lost a computer once

because it leaked on the -- you can't anticipate when it's going to happen. we've lost instruction materials, the students' materials, bulletin boards have been ruined. those are the types of things that we've seen. >> the district currently has over a billion dollars top spend over five years on improvements but officials say they need 3 billion to fix the entire district. along with new rooftops, the repairs needed include new furnaces and air conditioning units. >> turning to accuweather the return of winter-like temperatures to the delaware valley. take a look live at the ben franklin bridge tonight. clouds up above. it was windier and colder today than we've had so far lately. some folks even saw a few flurries this afternoon and looks like that many chill is here to stay for your weekend. meteorologist cecily tynan live at the big board with our forecast. hi, cecily. >> hi, monica and winter is back. cool today, windy and double scan live showing these winds out of the northwest even pulling a few lake effect snow showers, a few of these flurries making the long trip from the great lakes into the

has become the mission of one man from burlington county. the man tried to take his own life as a teen and knows the pain of debilitating depression all too well. new at five new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has his mission to save lives. >> reporter: 23-year-old drew bergman of mount holly is a senior at temple university. when he was a teen drew tried twice to take his own life and remembers well the all consuming depression. >> it felt like every ounce of me was 10 times heavier. like just to get out of bed every morning i had to literally drag myself. >> i was always afraid that i would find him hanging in a closet. >> reporter:s mom says it was a frightening time as the family struggled to get the help he needed. some of the doctors are less than helpful. >> if you're going to be a pediatrician you have to deal with these things, eating disorders depression cutting the whole thing. >> reporter: through combination of intense therapy medication and hard work drew emerged from a dark place but it wasn't easy.

>> i was so scared of what people would say, what people would think if they knew what i had actually go and through. >> reporter: drew is now traveling around the country speaking to middle and high school students telling them his story and reaching out to other kids who may be having trouble themselves. drew tells students everyone carries invisible book bags filled with pressures around family, school, relationships and social media. >> we just throw it all in and over time that bag gets heavier and heavier. so i try to tell these kids that if they know someone who is carrying too heavy of an invisible book bag to help that that kid find help. >> reporter: speaking for an ardmore based suicide education group called minding your mind drew suggests students identify a teacher coach or other adult they can talk to and learn to develop coping mechanisms. >> they and want help. they just don't know how to start that conversation. >> reporter: drew bergman is trying to give them the tools and hoping to save lives. i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> well, the philadelphia auto show rolls into town this

repeeling roe versus wade. the crowd i saw out here is feeling very optimistic about this administration. an overwhelmingly young crowd attended the 44th annual march for life. >> ♪ you're the generation that's going to end abortion. >> reporter: and for the first time in history, the sitting vice president headlined the event. >> because of all of you, and the many thousands hoop stand with us in marches like this all across the nation, life is winning again. [cheers and applause] in america. >> reporter: vice president pence has a 100 percent favorable rating by the national right to life committee and a 0 percent approval they wanted to avoid comparisons to the women's march on sa that. >> that voice might have been shut out last week but pro life is pro woman.

loads of students from local catholic high schools. one bus departed little flower high school for girls in that hunting park. students say it's important to stand up for their beliefs. >> really overmany welling because there's so many crowds of people coming in. it's hard to get around but it's amazing because there's so many people that come together in sportif saving life. >> also in attendance today 150 seminarians from saint charles borromeo seminary. >> police in west goshen township want your help finding a gunman who violently assaulted an employee at a rite-aid early this morning. here is surveillance footage of the crime. it happened at the rite-aid on phoenixville i think the employee arrived the the store to open up for the day when a gunman attacked him and forced him to open a safe. the employee gave cash but the gunman wasn't satisfied. he assaulted that employee again and then took off. rite-aid is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. >> from our delaware news room tonight, chopper6 was over the scene of a fire at a home in

newark this afternoon. crews responded to the fire just before two. ooh 30 here in the 600 block of south old baltimore pike. there were no reports of injuries but you can see how much damage was done. officials say the home was vacant. no word on a cause. the trial of a philadelphia police officer encouraging her children to fight got under way today. tamika gross is charged with child endangerment and assault after prosecutors say she prodded her teen son and daughter to get into fights with other children. she's accused of getting involved in some of the fights herself. officer gross was arrested back in 2014. >> a bill to eliminate school property taxes is gaining traction in harrisburg. the today school officials in delaware county met with constituents to explain why the taxes are necessary. officials say the taxes are required to pay pension costs which they say skyrocketed in the past decade. the money also goes to that fund charter and cyber charter schools in the state which cost nearly half billion dollars. the proposal calls for tax

relief for corporations which school officials say would not be good for residents. >> king of prussia mall, all of the large commercial properties would not be paying property taxes and their taxes would be shifted onto citizens through increases in sales tax and the personal income tax. but supporters of the legislation say it does provide relief especially for older homeowners without children or grandchildren in school. no word when the vote may take place. >> a flu outbreak has hit a local prison forcing officials to suspend visits from family and friends there. inmates at graterford prison are dealing with widespread flu that means the visiting room is shut down at least through tomorrow. inmates who have court hearings in philadelphia will be brought but only if they're not actively ill. senator bob casey held app round table discussion with breast cancer survivors today in his center city o the topic was the cost of supplies to control a condition called

lymphedema. that's a condition that causes swelling and fluid retention following surgery where lymph nodes are removed. casey along with those survivors supporting legislation that would provide medical coverage of lymphedema compression treatment garments. >> news tonight from texas where doctors say george h.w. bush can go home from the hospital possibly this weekend. the bush's spokesman released a statement a few hours ago saying the 41st president will be released monday at the latest and he said bush is eagerly looking forward to it. the former president who is 92 years old has been hospitalized since january 14th after suffering respiratory problems. >> time now for another check of the highways and by ways on your rush hour friday evening. gina gannon in for matt pelman to tell us the latest. >> hi, rick and monica. unfortunately starting off with an accident and we're also in rush hour so a lot going on. here's your live look of the accident on the schuylkill expressway this is out there and eastbound approaching grid girard avenue and you can see that that left lane is blocked, the accident right

officials still have no idea how long the bridge that connects the pennsylvania and new jersey turnpikes will remain closed. and that's a problem because tens of thousands of motorists are seriously being inconvenienced. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live on the pennsylvania side of the bridge. bob, what's the latest here? >> reporter: jim, good evening. i can tell you progress is being made in the form of eight 80-foot towers that are going to be brought in here to prop up the bridge. behind me you can see construction on the foundation of those towers is being laid right now but until those are in place, nobody is going up there including work crews to figure out the problem. people want answers but when it comes to the reopening of the i276 delaware river turnpike bridge, there's no answer yet. it's been closed for a week and will remain closed and that means people say they'll continue to lose money. >> my job is -- we have to either go out of our
