down. tonight, we have the exclusive story. it is friday night. the big story on "action news" tonight is a dragnet for a violent gang of bandits involved in the shooting of a cab driver. with the story, investigative reporter chad pa deli. what do you have on this? >> police tell me the gang may be responsible for upwards of two dozen crimes. one person is in custody. police are looking for many more suspects. police say this is surveillance video from the brazen crew's robbery. they enter pete's pizza. employees scattered. they force an employee to the front of the store, steal cash and flee. a guy came in with a hood strapped to his face. >> a month later police say the

crew struck again. this time richard carol was at the front counter getting ready to close up. once i noticed what was going on i told everyone to run to the back. they ran out the back door and wrp uninjured. as many as a dozen teens and young men are part of the crew terrorizing businesses from philadelphia to the main line. >> they are heavily masked hitting all sorts of businesses. >> southwest detective john walker says this man, marquise carter made a mistake and left his phone at a crime scene. detective also arrested him last week. he's involved in three crimes. they believe the 23-year-old is the ring leader. >> lieutenant john walker believes the gang is also responsible for the robbery and

shooting that left a cab driver in critical condition january 15th. now police want help catching the at large criminals who continue to strike. >> they haven't stopped. though we have mr. carter in custody, we had another incident on the 23, so we know the gentlemen are still out there. >> police tell me when they arrested carter at his girl friend's house last week, he was armed with a revolver. >> thank you, chad. police hope this surveillance video can help generate tips in a violent hold up of a rite aid this morning. the suspect was lying in wait and ambushed the employee opening the store just before 7:00. the gunman beat the victim and forced the worker to open the safe. rite aid is offering a $5,000 reward. police are investigating a

homicide in philadelphia. a 48-year-old grandmother stepped off a trolley with six children when she was mowed down. she died of her injuries hours later. her three-year-old grandson had minor injuries. the other children were shaken but unhurt. police are looking for a white minivan with significant damage. >> a child was killed in a crash, a second child injured. jeff schair compan chirico is le scheen. whascene. what are the details? police are investigating to determine if the atv had its lights on when it crashed into a car. >> police investigated a fatal

atv crash along bensalem boulevard. from the ground you can see the wreckage after the four wheeler riding in the street his a car broadside. the vehicle turned in front of them. didn't see them on the atv. we have one fatality and one critical at the hospital. >> both victims are middle-school age. >> driver stopped and is cooperating. no signs of impairment. >> i feel horrible for the family. to lose a son at a young age, you shouldn't have to do that. >> police say atv riding in the streets around here has been a problem for a while, but this man doesn't think this will change anythingful >anything.>> kids are kids. they do what they do. >> lesson is don't ride atv's on the roadways.

>> > the one boy was taken to hospital where he is being treated. the boy who died was not wearing a helmet. >> jeff, thank you. >> work is under way to shore up the delaware bridge connecting the philadelphia and new jersey turnpikes. it's been closed since a fracture was discovered last week. the first section of support structures arrived on a flat bed truck. engineers plan to install eight, 80-foot towers to prop up the span. workers want people to know it's not in danger of collapse. >> it's in good shape but for the fracture point. hopefully we'll get it repaired

and have it in service many years to come. >> turnpike officials hope to have a timetable in about another week. >> president trump signed an expect i order designed to keep radical islamic terrorists out of the united states. in signing the order, trump suspended the entire u.s. refugee admission's program for four months and imposed a 90 day ban from iraq, syria, iran, sudan, libya, somalia and yemen. they are all muslim majority countries. the council on american islamic relations said it will suit in court challenging the constitutionality of trump's order. >> trump signed an executive order on rebuilding the u.s.

armed forces. earlier in the day president trump met with teresa may and they held a joint news conference where they re affirmed the relationship with britain. he said torture is effective but it's matt is' call and mattis doesn't believe it's an effective tool. he had a phone call with president enrique pena nieto this afternoon. tomorrow, trump will talk on the phone with russian president vladimir putin. asked if he will lift sanctions against russia, trump said it's very early to be talking about that. >> ♪ ♪ >> tens of thousands of abortion rights opponents attended the

march for life. this year vice president mike pence became the first sitting vice president to address the madge and promised the trump administration will support their cause. president trump will announce a supreme court nominee who will uphold the god given liberties in the tradition of justice scalia. >> trump has signed an order to ban foreign aid to abortion providers overseas. >> there was good news from pennsylvania governor tom wolf. he is cancer free. doctors have given the governor a clean bill of health after treating him for prostate cancer. wolf's prostate cancer was detected early after a regular check up.

>> new jersey governor chris christie will not be the target of a complaint in the bridgegate case. he failed to reopen the shuttered lanes to the george washington bridge. the state doesn't believe it can prove misconduct beyond a reasonable doubt. >> cherry hills east students will be able to go ahead with the mice call "rag time" and they'll be able to use if "n" word. controversy erupted over the production. the superintendent now says the contract requires that it run as written. so tonight, he says that while he loathes the "n" word, he will allow the production without

alterations and use it as a teaching opportunity. >> the philadelphia auto show opens tomorrow but tonight car enthusiasts had a chance to get a preview. the black tie gala gave people a chance to dine and dance. rick williams was on hand tonight and so was "6abc" manager bernie. >> if you can't make it to the show first thing tomorrow, turn on the television. channel6 will give you an up close look at the cars with a preview airing tomorrow night. it could be tough to get around philadelphia tonight. a movie crew is in town filming kevin hart. crews shut down jfk boulevards

on a lawn. it happened at 7:00 tonight. authorities have not said how badly everyone was hurt or who was at fault. >> philadelphia police say a motorcyclist killed by a septa bus had run a red light. it hit the bus traveling westbound at rising sun. no one on the bus was reported hurt. newly released surveillance shows the moment of impact as a pickup truck slammed into a mass transit bus in syracuse. the truck was lodged in the side of the bus several feet off the ground. the truck driver swerved off the road to avoid stopped traffic and crashed into the stopped bus as passengers scrambled to get out of the way. there were only minor injuries. >> this is a hotel collapsing into a river in peru yesterday

after ten hours of nonstop rain softened the foundation. no one was injured because the hotel which dates back to colonial times, had been evacuated. several buildings were destroyed and forecastsers expect more rain in the coming months. >> 40 survivors of natzi death camps laid flowers in poland today on this remember imrens r. this is the liberation of auschwitz by soviet soldiers. a million people were killed at this concentration camp mostly jews. >> the american economy had its best showing in five years. gross product grew 1% in 2016 matching what it did 2011. the gdp down one percentage point from 2015.

another retailor is shutting down stores and laying off thousands of employees. wet seal filed for bankruptcy protection but can't find a buyer, so it's closing. they have 171 stores in 42 states. the bike race has hit the skids after 30 years. organizers announced that the cycling classic has been canceled for 2017. the reasoning, a lack of sponsor ship money and more needs for heightened security making it more expensive. the race needed to raise a million dollars but they hope to bring it back next year if they can raise the money. >> if you enjoy bike riding yourself, consumer reports has a report to stop using a specific helmet saying it fails routine safety tests.

chin straps and a buckle design today keep the helmet on your head broke or came loose three out of four times. >> this can cause the helmet to move out of place in an accident. if it's not in the right place, it's not going to offer protection. >> they say they'll work with federal regulators on an appropriate remedy. a park place police officer is drawing plays for his act of kindness to a woman in need. when officer davis pulled over a woman for a traffic ticket, she had two shall children without car seats. turns out she couldn't afford them so instead of citing her, he bought them car seats. the random kindness of strangers, in this case a police officer. >> hopefully people will do more

we had lake effect snow flurries earlier today. a quiet weekend but seasonably cold. tomorrow a repeat of today. we start with a good amount of sunshine, 7:00, 32-degrees. clouds roll in, in the afternoon 1:00 at 40. mostly cloudy be the afternoon and on the breezy side tomorrow. we start off with winds chill in the 20s. windchills struggle to climb to the mid 30s. you want to bundle up, winds westerly sustaining 10 to 20 miles per hour and winds diminish sunday. if you are headed to the poconos, a great weekend for skiing. saturday, lots of clouds, 31. windchills stuck in the low 20s. get the hand warmers and toe
