4:00 pm
complex. we begin our coverage this afternoon with "action news" reporter, john rawlins, live at the scene. >> reporter: well, the last time we talked to a source here we are told that the situation is still fluid how we were told if the last minute that we will get an official update here. so far officials have said very little except to say there is a hostage situation. all this have began at 11:00 this morning with reports of smoke inside of building c. that is described as a maximum security flow down unit and medium security. where people step down. we are told that a blanket was lit on fire in a closet and multiple hostages were taken at least four corrections office and one counselor and one injury possibly more and a 35-year-old corrections officer was struck multiple times with a mop ringer
4:01 pm
and inmate fists. he is transported to the hospital and said to be awake and alert. we don't know how many hostage takers were involved or if they have demands. we are seen armored vehicles and s.w.a.t. personnel in the area, at some point earlier today there had been some communications with the hostage takers and the officials here. it's not clear if that is still going on now. and there is a lot we don't know. >> maybe we'll ask you a quick question. are you no doubt some distance way from the scene. -- from the prison complex but we want the public to understand that there is a lot of fencing and likely contained to the one building. correct? >> that is correct. this is a huge facility with

4:03 pm
under control? >> good afternoon sharrie. the first concern is to resolve the situation without a loss of life or serious injury. or some serious damage to the facility. there are a number of things that take place simultaneously. isolating the disturbance and minimizing the number of people involved and removing injured individuals and none combatants and then to assess the situation and determine what type of response you'll take. >> lewis we understand that all of these situations are very fluid and there is any number of circumstances that could lead to each one. but i trust there is a lot of training that goes into this and these guards at that facility given it's a maximum security facility would have practiced a situation like this. >> as you can see from the
4:04 pm
aerial coverage, the officers are equipped to handle such a disturbance and they train regularly to prevent, not only prevent but to prepare for these eventualities. this is a situation that no prison administrator wants to face but there is always a potential. >> thank you louis for your time. we appreciate your perspective and time. thank you. this is obviously a fluid situation. and we of course will have more as the story unfolds. we'll bring you live reports on air throughout the evening on air and at 6abc.com as well. in other news today. parents in berks county are being charged in their daughter's death, they allegedly refused to give her medical treatment for pneumonia because of their religious beliefs. walter perez is live now outside of the courthouse with the details on this courthouse
