delaware are at half staff in his honor and the investigation into the inmate takeover is underway and all 120 inmates inside at the time are being considered suspects. as fellow officers grieve the prison staffing has taken center stage as a concern. officialed say that an appropriate amount of staffers were working at the time and now this are calls to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. we have live team coverage on the investigation and the emotional aftermath. gray hall is live at the prison many smyrna. >> reporter: we can tell you that the prison is now secure and that is the positive news but sadly a father, co-worker and husband will not be returning home and the state of delaware is mourning. >> i have oshave orders flags a

the first state to be flown as half staff. >> a hostage situation at james t. vaughn correctional center delaware's largest prison came to an end. >> we lost one of our own. it pains me to make these statements. >> three correctional officers and a female counselor. they released two later in the day and the counselor and officer were held overnight and tactical teamed rescued the counselor and authorities say she was protected by some of the inmates. they were not released they came out of the building. we would consider all 120 suspects in this investigation. >> despite efforts to rescue and save all four hostages, tragically we learned that

37-year-old sergeant steven floyd did not make it out alive. >> he was found unresponsive, sergeant steven floyd was with the department for 16 years and was pronounced dead. >> at 5:06 a.m. entered with a backhoe after inmates blocked access points with metal lockers filled with water. >> it created very heavy building blocked and used the blocks to build a wall. >> the facility is sewer but the investigation into why this happened is just beginning and. >> stone will be left unturned. the detectives are going cell by cell collecting evidence. >> a motive is not clear and not clear is the type of weapons the inmated used. we were only told they were

loving husband. >> and hero. and union president says that the inmates began to take over building c sergeant floyd warned other officers of a trap and they escaped unhurt. >> he saved lives in an emergency situation at c building at vaughn correction center. >> but he says the tragedy could have been prevented and blames former governor, jack markell and charges markell and the a clu allowed more prison freedoms without the staffing. >> it made our jobs more taxing without the staff and the inmates are required to get more time out of their cells and we basically don't have enough staff to do it. >> they called sergeant floyd's death the hardest day of his life the first correctional

24-year-old robert lumpkin was caught going into the bathroom with students for short periods of time. more than $250 worth of marijuana was found in think hiz car and house. in delaware county a laudry mat worker turned the tables on a would be rapist who ambushed her with a gun and when she fought back he ended up shot. vernon odom has her story tonight. >> reporter: good evening, this woman is a single mother of three teenage girls and for three years now she works the dangerous overnight shift. and the suspect 23 from wilmington delaware and remains hospitalized in serious condition and his left arm is shatter. >> did he say anything once he was shot. >> ouch ouch. >> she is describing her attackers response when she managed to grab his gun, a .9

millimeter in an a rape attempt. she was the overnight manager at this laundry mat. the gunman enters and traps her in the restroom and tells her to disrobe and she resisted. >> would either take my chances, either grab the gun from him or try to get out or that was it. >> after the suspect was hit in the left arm. this 35-year-old mother of three fled to an all night convenience store to call police. he staggered out and collapsed and then picked himself up to flee only to be arrested several blocked away and he remains hospitalized in serious condition facing multiple charges and she said she did what she had to do because she feared for her life. >> i had to either take the gun away from him or else after ward he will shoot me and i'll be dead. >> i think there is not a police officer in this building that is

mike stack was in philadelphia this morning touring the science leadership academy in center city. the academy provides a college prep curriculum with science and entrepreneur ship. he visited several classrooms and spoke with students as well as staff. the parents of trayvon martin spoke about his legacy at the library is of philadelphia today. he was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch control volunteer in 2012. his death and the acquittal of the man that shot him sparked outrage nationwide. they talked about the experience with teens during the event today and shared detailed about their son, called rest in power.

"action news" continues with adam joseph rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again here is what is happening on "action news" thursday night. a sturing tribute to a fallen delaware corrections officer that died dura hostage seethe inside of the vaughn correction center in smyrna. tonight how he is being remembered. and a south jersey driver is facing criminal charges after meets say they intentionally ran someone other. and donald trump is talking tough with a long held american ally and now tensions are rising with australia and iran is facing more scrutiny. >> and flags are flying at half staff in honor of fallen correction officer steven floyd.

they are not commentsing on the possible motive for the 19 hour hostage standoff. and two other correction officers and a female counselor were held. and they were granted access to running water but instead authorities say they use the the water to fill prison issued foot lockers with water acting as barriers to prevent the s.w.a.t. teams from entering and when they went into building c they found sergeant floyd unresponsive and a short time later he was pronounced dead. >> ali gorman is in wilmington tonight. officers from across delaware stood at attention as sergeant floyd's body was brought to the medical examiner's office today. >> reporter: it was an emotional scene out here earlier today and also powerful tribute many people say they feel devastated by what happened and they wanted

employee suffered non-life-threatening injuries, he was found later by police and charged with aggressive assault and at this time it's unclear why the victim was targeted. >> the naacp is calling for a new trial for the man convicted of a deadly building collapse in 2013. the collapse of an unsupported wall crushed sat army store and killed seven people. in 2015 campbell was found guilty of six counts of involuntary manslaughter. they found that the salvation army bearing 75% of the blame for the clap and campbell one percent of the blame and now the naacp is demanding a new trial for campbell. >> for all practice purposes griffin campbell was a fall guy and we don't like the way the da

they used a backhoe to breach the cell block c. there were two hostaged inside and one was rescued but sergeant steven floyd was dead. the big story on "action news" tonight is the take over of part of the james t. vaughn correctional center by inmates and to say the least it did not end well. this is the way it looked earlier this morning when the last inmates were removed from the building and forced to lay on the ground. one by one they were removed and taken into custody and hours of negotiations resulted in the release of three hostages, that is one of them but that was not enough as we followed the body of sergeant floyd being transported from the prison to the medical examiners office. we have three reports, chad pradelli is with the prison guard's soonon in dover and sara bloomquist at philadelphia's prison and gray hall is live in smyrna with the latest
