they used a backhoe to breach the cell block c. there were two hostaged inside and one was rescued but sergeant steven floyd was dead. the big story on "action news" tonight is the take over of part of the james t. vaughn correctional center by inmates and to say the least it did not end well. this is the way it looked earlier this morning when the last inmates were removed from the building and forced to lay on the ground. one by one they were removed and taken into custody and hours of negotiations resulted in the release of three hostages, that is one of them but that was not enough as we followed the body of sergeant floyd being transported from the prison to the medical examiners office. we have three reports, chad pradelli is with the prison guard's soonon in dover and sara bloomquist at philadelphia's prison and gray hall is live in smyrna with the latest on the

investigation into what happened there yesterday and today. >> reporter: well jim, as you know this started chaotically yesterday and law enforcement official were hope that this would end with nobody getting hurt and as you know that is not what happened. and the family and community is mourning the loss of a law enforcement officer. >> detectives are going cell by cell collecting evidence and at this time. i am not able to give you a motive for at tack and i am not able to give you a trips of the weapons other than to know we are aware that some had sharp instruments. >> the violence started wednesday morning when inmates took four hostage, three officers and one counselor. and they released two later in the day and sergeant lloyd and the counselor were held overnight and then a tactical team gathered entrance in

building c and teams were forced to use a backhoe to get in and the counselor was rescued and not hurt and authorities say she was protected by some of the inmates. >> the officer sergeant steven floyd. he was with the department for 16 years, he was pronounced dead. >> the cause has not been determined. his body was taken to the medical examiner's for an autopsy and the facility is now secure and they are working to find you how this happened and prevent is from happening again. >> these brave men and women go to work every day knowing they may not come home. >> and back out live we should mention that we learnd this morning that three mainance workers were rescued earlier

this morning and sergeant lloyd leaves behind three adult children and a wife. >> thank you gray. lets switch live to "action news" reporter chad pradelli who is in dover tonight. chad sergeant steven floyd obviously he was on the mind of the union today. >> reporter: yes jim, it was an emotional day here inside of union headquarters, sergeant floyd was a friend to many and remembered for his dedication and his heroism. as the inmates took steven floyd hostage and shoved him into a broom closet. they were about to enter building c to help and union officials said that floyd radioed no. >> as the inmates attempted to take over the building, sergeant floyd told a couple of the lieutenants to get out of the building it was a trap. >> and union leader says that

the the selflessness that defines him. his fellow officers were in tears. >> this has absolutely been the hardest day of my life. >> they use the this afternoon's press conference to blast former governor jack markell who he says helped to implement wider freedoms for violent inmates without adding staff. >> these issues, staffing retention and short ables, overtime, we have been talking about these issues for quite sometime. >> what exactly went down inside of the prison whether staffing played a role is still unclear. what is clear, a dedicated officer, grandfather and father and husband is now dead. >> his wife told me at 12:20 last night she was sitting at her couch and looked at the front door because that is the time that steve came through the door after working a shift and she couldn't believe he wasn't

defend yourself. >> and this section the most secure where inmates live in contained areas mostly isolated. >> if we have to respond to an incidents we can isolate the security measures and we can respond. >> they train constantly and drill for riots and hostage situations but they never know what their day as a correction officer will bring. >> every day we are faced with challenges. every day and no two days are the same. >> i kiss my wife good-bye every morning and hope to come back the same way. >> reporter: this prison was named for warden patrick curenand deputy warren fromhold murdered at the prison in is the 73. the only prison system employees known to be killed in the line of duty. i'm sara bloomquist, channel 6
