the son of sergeant steven floyd, steven floyd jeer who was accompanied by his brother-in-law accepted the medal of valor in his father's name. sergeant floyd was also posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant. let's go live to smyrna municipal park and "action news" reporter jeff chirico. jeff what about the vigil which is forming now for lieutenant steven floyd. >> reporter: jim, this was supposed to be a small quiet gathering of corrections officers. but you can see from behind me that is clearly not the case. there are hundreds already gathered here at the smyrna municipal park for this candlelight vigil to remember man who gave his life in service. this was the view from chopper6 hd as the body of now lieutenant steven floyd was escorted to a funeral home in dover. >> present arms. >> reporter: minutes earlier police saluted as floyd's body was transportd into a hearse his grieving family was on

hand to watch his colleagues gathered for a vigil remember him fondly. >> he was a good man. he was a good sergeant. he was there for his people. he helped -- he helped everybody in the prison. that's the type of person he was. >> reporter: officials say lieutenant floyd a father of three adult children was killed by inmates during an uprising and hostage situation at the james t. vaughn correctional center in smyrna. three other prison staffers were injured. >> it's so overwhelming being that were dealing with different things every day. us as guards we deal with a lot and we're stressed out like there's no tomorrow. >> reporter: for know now tonight is a time of reflection and remembrance of a man who gave his life in service. >> right now we're here to honor our fallen comrade. >> this is not something that he deserved. he deserved so much more than the way he was treated. >> reporter: and back out here lie it is clearly a cold night. everyone bundled up. you see some candles lit. they are probably expecting --

they say they're expecting hundreds of people including possibly some lawmakers here at smyrna municipal park. reporting live in smyrna, jeff chirico channel6 "action news." >> thank you, jeff. our coverage of the delaware prison investigation continues online at 6abc.com. you can read the very latest on the investigation and hear police radio as the situation unfolded wednesday night. >> ♪ we are following a developing story from west philadelphia tonight where the search is on for a hit-and-run driver. police say the incident started with an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend at 59th and locust just after 3:00. police believe the man then got into his car and intentionally hit the woman and another man. the victims were taken to the hospital with multiple injuries. the search continues for the driver. unwelcome news for motorists tonight. officials say the turnpike glitch connects the pennsylvania and new jersey turnpikes will remain closed at least until april.

pennsylvania turnpike officials say they're still trying to figure out why one of the steel trusses is fractured. the 1.2-mile span over the delaware river was closed january 20th after workers discovered the crack. the turnpike bridge could reopen in early april if repairs go smoothly. this could be a cold case breakthroughs. philadelphia police today announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a woman in july of 2015. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live at the murder scene in the 3000 block of aramingo avenue in port richmond and john you've got the full story. >> reporter: jim, the break in this case came with surveillance video from a.m. crime show that aired on phl17 last month. that generated that crime video generated multiple tips from people in this area who say they recognized the man, they recognized his walk, they recognized the gait that he was walking, his build and his

distinctive backpack. that led detectives to a 28-year-old now homeless man who is already in jail on unrelated charges. >> it's a little weight off our shoulders 'cause the man is not walking around you know but it don't change nothing. she's not here. >> reporter: doesn't bring her back. >> doesn't bring her back. >> reporter: hugs today for those who knew and loved stephanie dzikowski. her two-year-old daughter in the room. today police charged 28-year-old james jones. >> a little bit of relief, you know, gives a lot of people closure. >> reporter: relief and some anger. jones had attended various community events here to mourn and remember stephanie. >> he came to the rallies, he shook people's hands, he gave his condolences. he went to the funeral. >> reporter: james jones was that socially known to the victim. jones' girlfriend was stephanie's friend says stephanie's boyfriend sean reacted to today's news. >> i never expected it. i did not.

>> reporter: did you know him? >> i -- i don't know him per se but i know his girlfriend. >> reporter: and his girlfriend was stephanie's good friend. >> that's right. >> reporter: jones had previously been in the family house might answer a question asked the night of the murder, why didn't the family pitbull confronts the killer. >> it had to be somebody she knew. it had to be because the dog would not let a stranger into that house. we all knew that. >> reporter: well, stephanie dzikowski is remembered by her friends and neighbors and family members here as a hard working loving mother. she is going -- she continues to be missed. police are not saying much about what might have motivated the crime here. in addition to the homicide charge, jones was charged with robbery and burglary which took some folks here by surprise because they didn't recall anything of any significance that was reported missing at the time of the crime back in 2015. live in port richmond, john rawlins channel6 "action news." jim. >> all right, john, thank you. the penalty phase got

under way today in the civil case involving the building collapse in center city philadelphia in 2013. on tuesday, a jury found all the defendants liable. those include the salvation army, the developer an architect the contractor and the excavator operator. the jury will now decide how much each will have to pay out to the victims. six people were killed in the collapse, a seventh victim died 23 days later. and 12 other people were injured. last night we told you the story of a mother and child reunion after the baby was inadvertently abducted by a car thief in south philadelphia. well, tonight we have video of the thief and what he did after discovering that the little girl was in the back seat of the suv. "action news" reporter gray hall has the story. >> reporter: this is not an image of a dad taking his child for a walk. instead, police say this is a case of an abduction and car theft. the 19 month old was in the back seat of an suv that investigators say this man

stole. officers believe when he realized a child was strapped in the back in car seat he pulled over and left her on a sidewalk. >> about five minutes later a neighbor in the area called about a -- a male with a baby in a car seat leaving the baby on the pavement at night in the 900 block of emily street. >> reporter: it started around 5:30 p.m. thursday near eighth and mckean streets in south philadelphia. police say the child's mother who is seen here and did not want to talk on camera was leaving the laundromat where she works. officers say she ran back inside just for a moment to grab the crying child a toy. she left the 19 month old in the back seat of that suv. the keys were still inside. the car was still running. that proved to be a big mistake. in about 10 seconds the woman's suv described as a toyota rav4 and baby were gone. >> the baby was crying. she was cold. i hold it. and she was pointing and saying mommy, mommy but like i don't know who your mom are and my reaction is like call

catholics. the mayor assured the group that the city supports and embraces its muslim population. groundbreaking took place today in bucks county on the final phase of the new development for seniors. rotc li will soon begin construction on 60 units. the units will join the 72 already on the site. the complex is for active adults. prices begin at $149,000. a south jersey community came together over coffee this morning. the ocean city police department held its annual coffee with a cop event. residents were invited to the starbucks to talk with and to build relationships with the police officers who serve their community. coming up on "action news" tonight, a mercer county couple dealing with the tragic death of their son are being very candid about how he died putting it right in the first line of his obituary.

stephanie oswald's grief is palpable. last week their only child died suddenly and his obituary doesn't sugar coat what happened. >> on january 27th, 2017, our beautiful son andrew died from an overdose of heroin. he was 23 years old. >> reporter: andrew was raised in hamilton township but was living and working in luzerne county pennsylvania after completing a drug rehab program there but he started using heroin again and overdosed last friday. the oswalds could have written a obituary that glossed over his drug related death but decided to do just the opposite. >> my message is that people have to stop hiding this. people have to stop hiding this disease that they need to stop pretending that it doesn't exist. >> there's no shame. you're not a bad parent because your son or your child, your daughter passed from a drug overdose. >> reporter: the oswalds say since he was a child drew had a big heart and great sense of

humor. they did everything they could to help him fight his addiction but heroin won. >> it keeps coming back. it got a way of getting its claws in you and never let's go. >> reporter:. >> reporter: this is why stories like andrew's should not be ignored. the only way we can conquer the heroin epidemic is to share our stories and raise awareness. >> i'm not going to let his death be in vain. >> reporter: a celebration of andrew's life is set for tomorrow afternoon. his parents are determined that after that they're going to do everything they can to make sure other parents don't have to go through what they're going through now. in hamilton, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> progress continues at the museum of american revolution as it gets ready to open in april. today crews worked to hang a massive painting of george washington and french general rochambo at the top of the grand staircase. the artwork is a hand painted 19th century copy of the siege

of yorktown a patienting by french artist august kudare. tickets go on sale february 26th. that is a large painting. some local dentist teamed up with students from camden county college to provide free dental care to youngsters today. children received free cleanings preventive care and a lesson in good health. this events called give kids a smile day. organizers say routine dental appointments can cost about a hundred dollars and because of that families without insurance often just don't get care. that's why they say an event like this is so important.

but don't count out matt ryan. the exton native threw 38 touchdown passes during the regular season second in the nfl. this is ryan's first trip to the super bowl compared to number seven for brady but ryan feels pretty good about his team's chances. >> i feel really confident. you know, i believe in our team. i believe in the guys that we have. i believe in our coaching staff. you know, and i believe that, you know, i'm in a good space to get myself ready to play. and i think the combination of those factors make you feel really comfortable. the students started dancing at 2 o'clock this afternoon. they'll keep going until 10:0 10:00. the dance marathon raises money to support the diamond fund at penn state children's here she hospital. this is the fourth year abington students have done this. in that time they've raised more than $100,000.

temperature-wise, though, definitely back to winter. 33 degrees in philadelphia, down from our high of 35 which is 6 degrees below normal. allentown 28. cape may 33. wilmington 32 degrees. we still have winds at about 10 to 15 miles per hour, so the wind chill makes it feel like 23 in philadelphia, 24 in atlantic city, 18 in allentown. if you're heading up to the poconos to go skiing bundle up. the current wind chill is 8 degrees. it will drop below zero tomorrow morning up there. like most of the wind today was a cloudy day. we have a piece of energy moving through right now it's called a short wave that will that continue pushing to the east. high pressure building in behind that so that means clouds will be clearing out pretty quickly tonight and it's going to be a cold night. 32 -- 32 -- 32 will be nice. 22 in philadelphia, not used to saying that. allentown 16. trenton 19. and the boardwalk in atlantic city 22 degrees and we still will have a bit of a breeze. so, the wind chill tracker

showing tomorrow morning is going to be even colder than this morning. at 7 o'clock, the wind chill in philadelphia 13 degrees. some of our northern suburbs in the single digits. wind chills will not climb out of the 20's so it is going to be a cool day. on the flip side, sunday will be quite a bit warmer but we have a lot of clouds to start the day. future tracker showing around 10:30 in the morning the clouds are in place. we have a weak clipper up to the north so that likely will bring a few snow showers or flurries up across the poconos, the lehigh valley but this is a fast moving system. look at what happens by sunday afternoon. by 4 o'clock, the sunshine is back and temperatures will be about 10 degrees warmer than saturday. we're looking at temperatures in the mid 40's. if you want a big storm, we have one. the middle of next week but this is not a big snowstorm. this is a great lakes cutter. that low pressure tracking to our north and west so what that does, it puts us in the warm sector of the storm. this warm front moves through
