and those barts were some of the worst damage. dozens of people were injured. so far no deaths though reported. out of washington where the country's new attorney general will be sworn in this morning. >> jeff sessions confirmed by the senate overnight on a nearly party line vote. his confirmation ends a bitter partisan fight in which democrats expressed concerns about sessions' record on civil rights. after the senate's vote, sessions resigned as senator from al bethlehem. his replacement could be named by the governor of that state as early as today. and president trump's pick for supreme court expressing some concern about the president's extended criticism of federal judges. judge neil gorsuch made the critical comments in a private discussions with democratic senator. last night the senator richard blumenthal talked about his meeting with gorsuch. >> i said to judge gorsuch that i find these attacks on the judiciary absolutely abhorrent

and unacceptable. and i asked him to express his criticism. and to condemn these kinds of public attacks on an independent judiciary. and at that point, after some back and forth, he did say that he found them to be disheartening and demoralizing. >> a spokesman for gorsuch confirmed his comments. president trump's criticism of federal judges skam casa appeals court in san francisco copies to consider whether the travel ban should be reinstated. that decision could come today. the president slamming nordstrom for dropping ivanka's fashion line. nordstrom says it dropped the line because of poor sales, not politics. the retailer's stock dipped but rebounded later in the day. ivanka trump resigned from the brand after her father was elected president. t.j. pax and marshals say the line will no longer be prominent

>> so the president seemed to apply some pressure saying in a tweet that if the ban isn't put back in place, "we can never have the security and safety to which we are entitled." and there was some pushback from the president's supreme court nominee as abc's cecilia vega reports. >> reporter: president trump's supreme court pick making the rounds on capitol hill. and while making nice with senators, judge neil gorsuch had some harsh words about the man who nominated him. his spokesman confirming that during a meeting with one senate drarkts judge gorsuch described president trump's recent criticism of judges as "demoralizing and disheartening." the president has lashed out at the federal judge who put a temporary hold on his immigration ban calling him a so-called judge and saying he's to blame if anything happened. and he seemed to criticize the federal judges currently deliberating the appeal of that ruling. > i don't ever want to call a court biased so i won't call it biased. we haven't had a decision yet.

but courts seem to be so political. >> reporter: those three judges now considering whether to reinstate the travel ban had tough questions for lawyers on both sides, one asked whether the administration had any proof that travelers from the seven muslim majority countries present a threat. >> has the government pointed to any evidence connecting these countries with terrorism? >> reporter: another judge asking the washington state lawyer challenging the ban why he believes the president's executive order unfairly targets muslims. >> i have trouble understanding why we're supposed to infer religious animus when in fact the vast majority of muslims would not be affected as residents of those nations. >> reporter: watching at home in the white house, president trump clearly not impressed. >> and i was a good student. i understand things. i comprehend very well. okay? better than i think almost anybody. and i want to tell you i listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that

was disgraceful. >> reporter: as the president attacks the judicial branch, he's also accused of fanning fears about what he describes as a growing terror threat, dropping a hint about what he's learned in his classified briefings. >> believe me, i've learned a lot in the last two weeks. and terrorism is a far greater threat than the people of our country understand. >> reporter: a striking shift from past presidents who have urged americans to be vigilant but not afraid. we pressed the white house for an explanation. >> is there a specific threat that he is talking about? and should the american public, based on that statement right there, be fearful? >> no, but i think the american people should understand that the president's committed to do this. we face a very, very real threat in isis and radical islamic terrorism. >> but just to clarify though, is the threat today greater than it was yesterday or last week.

>> because that's what he's saying. >> i understand what he's saying. what i'm telling you is we shouldn't ever be behind the curve on the threats this country faces. we should make sure -- we don't know when the next one is coming. >> and from the president, this ominous tweet about the on going legal battle. big increase in traffic into our country from certain areas while we wait. >> sean spicer said he wanted to pool the data and he would get back to reporters pressing him on the president's tweeted. we are still waiting. we reached out to the department of homeland security and the state department. they also could not tell us whether there has been an increase in people as the president said, coming from certain areas. >> cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. and the nation's new attorney general jeff sessions will be at the white house this morning to be sworn into office. sessions was confirmed by his former senate colleagues last night on nearly a party line vote. that vote ended a partisan battle in which democrats said sessions wouldn't do enough to protect the rights of minorities and others. sessions has resigned his senate seat.

his replacement will be named by the governor of alabama. the other major developing story this morning is the massive snowstorm headed for the northeast. a foot of snow or more is expected to arrive during the morning rush and most school districts have already begun announcing canceled classes or closed school entirely. the airlines have canceled thousands of today's flights in and out of the region which may impact travel in other parts of the country. public works employees are pulling all nighters getting ready to keep the roads clear or as clear as possible anyway trying to prevent some repeats of this scene in suburban boston yesterday morning. amazingly no one was injured as this suv went sliding down a hill. not even the pedestrian you might have noticed that is hugging a wall there. scary stuff. >> yeah, absolutely. >> all the more reason why workers will have to extra prepare today to make sure that the roads are nice and salted to try to avoid any messes like that.
