center city complicating traffic and still no word from the hotel about why this major hazard took place. the ice started raining down on 12th and market from the top of the lowes hotel building around 2:00 this afternoon. and has continued to come down intermittently ever since. police blocked off the street between 12th and 13th. despite that, the wind blows smaller pieces of ice beyond the police lines. this tourist for a wedding got hit. >> i just got bonked in the head. with the ice. >> with the highs. it's fallen off the top. >> it's fallen off the top. >> reporter: are you hurt. >> i'm not but it was a small piece. >> reporter: philadelphians who walk this way every day and every night going home were quick to take note of the potential danger that existed. >> i walk past here every day and didn't never think that would happen until it actually happens. >> surprised to see the ice falling from the building. >> reporter: stunning. >> yeah, a little bit, a little bit, you know.

>> [inaudible] >> we'll get bob's report for you in just a moment. we had some technical difficulties. police in south jersey got closer to solving a murder mystery. a man is under arrest accused of killing a lumberton woman in her own home last year. "action news" reporter gray hall near the scene of that crime in burlington county with details for us. gray, good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you monica. we can tell you that folks in this community say they have been waiting for quite some time to hear the news that an arrest was made in this case. the suspect has been charged with first degree murder also stalking and now many are asking why did this happen. >> a lot of relief. a lot of relief around here that this was solved. >> reporter: tom long says families in his lumberton new jersey community can rest a bit easier knowing that this man, 53-year-old william gennett is that behind bars. it took over half a year but police eventually arrested gennett wednesday for the july 5th 2016 murder of

45-year-old jena warrick. the two were dating and described him as a friendly person. they're stunned. >> we were hoping it was not him. we really were hoping it was not him but, yes, it will provide some closure. >> reporter: a motive is still being investigated but police say they discovered gennett was using a cell phone app that allowed him to track o'rourke without her knowledge. >> it was very shocking of course. it always is this sort of thing and you don't want it to happen anywhere but in your own neighborhood it's tougher to take. >> when i found out, i was in tears. she was such a sweet woman and i can look from my door into her living room and i could do that the day they found her. >> reporter: gennett is accused of strangling o'rourke with his bear hands. police say the crime happened inside of her home located on nassau road. neighbors say the news of o'rourke's death was terrifying heartbreaking and difficult to deal with. many are hoping that the arrest of gennett will provide

some closure for her family and reveal some answers as to why she was murdered. >> it was really hard for me and my kids and my husband to sit and think this is right across the street and you never know. it could be anybody. >> reporter: and back out live tonight still not clear what led police to this suspect. the arrest affidavit has been sealed by the court. we can tell you he did not live in this neighborhood. he lived about 10 miles away in that tabernacle where he was arrested. live in lumberton, new jersey, gray hall, channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, gray, thank you. secretary of education betsy devos was met with protesters outside of her very first official school visit today. >> shame, shame, shame, shame. >> reporter:. >> several dozen demonstrators gathered outside of the jefferson middle school a.m. predominantly african-american middle school in washington. at one point they blocked devos from getting into the individual. the education secretary made

it inside and praised the school for its innovative approaches top teaching. secretary devos had harsh words for the protesters outside. in a statement she said this. i respect peaceful protests and i will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the department of education. no school door in america will be blocked from those seeking to help our nation's school children. >> ♪ today president donald trump hosted japanese prime minister shinzo abe to reaffirm ties between the u.s. and japan but it wasn't that meeting that grabbed the headlines today. instead, it was trump's look ahead to a new national security plan. and we'll have much more on that story coming up at 5:30. >> a new jersey judge will rule next week whether there's probable cause to proceed with a criminal case against republican governor chris christie over bridgegate. the judge will annoyance many nouns his decision next thursday. in october judge ruled there was probable cause for the case to proceed but a higher court judge disagreed and sent

they'll have a victim or a witness that has seen a suspect, they'll bring them down here and then i have a method that i'll go over with them where they pick out facial features with the way the eyes looked the nose looked shape of the head much it's kind of like a speed drawing almost. i always start with the eyes. i think it's the easiest they knothingto do. kind of came natural to me. i've always been drawing portraits. >> what else do you do. >> i do portraits of officers that are killed in the line of duty. i have them all signed in a portfolio altogether. this year i'm trying to do every single officer which is kind of tough i mean as i'm doing one, you hear the news that another one passed away. i always start head first and kind of add the uniform. you can make it look like a pencil, a paintbrush. this is a portrait of a sheriff's deputy from north dakota. he was shot and killed by a

climbed eight and change. >> health check tonight. the university of delaware reporting a spike in the number of flu cases this past week nationwide the virus continues to spread as well. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is at the big board to break down the numbers. >> hi guys. there are 26 confirmed cases at the university of delaware just this week. and students had just come back from their winter break. a statewide officials in delaware are seeing more flu activity in the college age group as well as kids ages five and up. the direct of students health services at the university says they typically see a spike in viruses when everyone comes back together and in this case it is the flu. >> actually there is an increase in flu at this time of year. the students just came back. some of our students do come from states that are seeing high activity of flu such as new york, new jersey and pennsylvania. and i think that's contributing a lot to why we're seeing a spike in flu right now. >> now the flu typically comes on suddenly with al fever,

body aches, a dry cough and chills. and as the doctor mentions nationwide we're still in the midst of a flu epidemic. across the state of delaware the new activity is actually lower but the cdc as he mentioned is that reporting high flu activity for both new jersey and for pennsylvania. now, if you haven't gotten a flu shot you still can and it could help protect you. the vaccine includes the predominant strain going around. the shot takes about two weeks to take full effect. also, make sure you're wash your hands frequently and stay weigh from others who are sick. if you're high risk for complications and you come down with symptoms you should call your healthcare provider. today in other news doctors are concerned false positives with mammograms may lead to women skipping their yearly screening. about 10 percent of mammograms wrongly defect cancer when it's not there. it leads to worry and more invasive testing. the new study shows when this happens women are less likely to return for a screening than

>> a boxing legend from philadelphia was laid to rest today. loved ones of george james gathered in flourtown for his funeral. james began as a amateur boxer at the navy yard in south philadelphia. he went on to be a manager and trainer and was inducted into pennsylvania boxing hall of fame. george james was 79 years old.

it has been one year since a senior housing communities opened in philadelphia and that is reason to celebrate. they had lunch and cake at the nativity bbm place in port richmond today. the first anniversary event was hosted by the catholic healthcare services of the archdiocese of philadelphia. the former parish school was transformed into 63 one bedroom apartments for low income people aged 62 and up. >> big news for prince fans tonight. most of the icon's music will hit streaming services this weekend. that includes most of the music prince recorded before 1995 including the albums purple rain and dirty mind. his music will be available ob spotify apple music and others. prince was protective of his music pulling it from youtube and declining requests from streaming services. jill biden and his wife have turning to hollywood for

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board tonight. >> meteorologist cecily tynan with a forecast for the weekend and beyond and what's up. >> finally it's friday. the weekend is upon us. it's looking like saturday will definitely be the better of the two days this weekend. now, double scan showing some radar echoes of snow out to the west. there's a warm front moving through so it could squeeze out a flurry or two, maybe a snow shower to the north but what this will really do is bring us much warmer air tomorrow and i think most people will be happy about it. right now the wind chill makes it feel like 24 in philadelphia, 16 in allentown, 20's in reading. atlantic city feels like 24 and trenton it feels like 20 degrees. so, satellite6 and action radar showing that warm front as it pushes in mainly a lot of cloud cover. again, a little bit of snow

shower activity but the fact that the air is so dry at the surface most of this is verga its not reaching the ground. problem though with the timing of the cloud cover. a lot is going on under in our skies tonight. we have a full snow moon. in addition to that we have a penumbral lunar eclipse at 7:44. the moon passes through the outer of the earths shad do. the top third of the moon is a little bit darker. unfortunately can't see sit because of the cloud cover and also because we have a comet at 10:30 tonight that you probably won't see as well thanks to the clouds. we'll have to wait a little bit later for that. so, tonight clouds with a flurry, a snow shower possible north. overnight low not that harsh with the clouds and the winds shifting out of the south temperatures not dropping much. 23 in allentown, 28ly in philadelphia, cape may 30 degrees and future tracker showing the best chance again of some of these snow showers actually hitting the ground would be across the lehigh valley and the poconos.

as we head into tomorrow o-more clouds than sunshine, but temperatures much warmer than today t a lot of melting going on tomorrow. at 7 o'clock, 35. by 1 o'clock, 48. temperatures sho should reach te low 50's by 4 o'clock and then 47 degrees at 7 o'clock. if you're heading to the poconos, 9 inches of snow yesterday, tomorrow pretty nice, mostly cloudy, 40 degrees. unfortunately sunday a mix, perhaps some freezing rain, changing to rain with a high of 38. so o-the five day at 5:00 showing 52 degrees, sunday periods of rain fog north of philadelphia with that dear snow pack. that system becomes a pretty big storm for new england. could have wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour. heartwarming for tuesday valentine's day from time to time increasing clouds on wednesday 45. could have rain or snow on thursday. adam will talk about that in the seven-day forecast. all in all not a bad weekend saturday better than sunday. >> okay. >> thank you cecily.

>> here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. president trump promises new action in there interests of the safety of the country. this as his education secretary is temporarily blocked from entering a school by protesters. one wrong move sends a car straight into a chinese food restaurant in south jersey and a simple mistake made by a local bank may have put hundreds of customers' personal information at risk. >> ♪ >> and now to president trump's 100 days in office following yesterday's ninth circuit court ruling on his temporary immigration ban, the commander in chief hinted today at his next plans to keep the country safe. today he welcomed the prime minister of japan to the white house. this as his new secretary of education betsy devos was initially forced away by protesters from visiting a public school in the nation's capitol. abc's janai norman is live with the latest. >> reporter: rick, president trump and prime minister

shinzo abe lashed in florida a little bit ago for their stay at the president's mar-a-lago resort. a joint news conference in washington that the president foreshadowed his next step top protect americans much the president made clear he is taking the case over his ban on travel from seven predominantly muslim countries to the supreme court. and now dropping hints about his next move for national security in the meantime. >> we'll be doing something very rapidly having to do with additional security for our country. you'll be seeing that sometime next week. >> reporter: the unanimous appeals court ruling against the president's executive order cited the government has pointed to no evidence supporting the ban and today president trump not offering anything more than his word. >> i've learned tremendous things that you could only learn frankly if you were in a certain position namely president. and there are tremendous threats to our country. we will not allow that to happen. >> reporter: just a few miles away protesters not allowing betsy devos to

ingredients for fabricating a bomb. a police official says one of the suspects was believed to be planning a suicide attack but the investigation had not yet uncovered a specific target. and world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the terror arrests in france as well as president trump's next move now that his temporary immigration a ban has hit another road block. you can watch all of that following "action news" at 6:00. >> back here neighbors in south philadelphia say they heard screams overnight and called 911. and that saved the lives of two women. police say the victims were attacked in a violent home invasion. three men broke into the home just before 2:00 a.m. this morning here on the 2100 block of south 66th street. the suspects demanded money and tied up the women with speaker wire. when officers arrived, they saw at least one man with a.m. mask through a win -- a mask

through a window. >> the officers did an excellent job getting into the house making sure these women were unharmed and taking the individuals in custody. >> police say they found jewelry and cash in the pockets of the suspects. >> a driver lost control and slammed flight a chinese restaurant in south jersey this afternoon. chopper6 over the scene here in the 300 block of mullica hill road in glassboro. authorities say the driver went right in the front of hunan wok chinese restaurant. the impact shattered the windows and the car had to be pulled out of the restaurant with a tow truck. amazingly the driver and no one inside the restaurant were hurt. the family of man who drowned in north wildwood is asking a judge top close a portion of that beach. today lawyers argued that a part of her ford inlet beach should be permanently closed to the public. it was there in 2012 that brad smith was swept in the water when the sand gave way while he was walking on the beach. there were two similar deaths

in 2009. engineers confirm the shore line was unstable and could collapse at any time. the city of north wildwood is asking the motion be dismissed. a judge did not make the decision yet today. >> a suspected child predator is off the streets of south jersey tonight. he is 25-year-old tristan coddle of pemberton township. he stored and shared images of child pornography from his home and from a cell phone. the investigation began at the beginning of this year. cottle was taken into custody on wednesday. he's currently being held at burlington county jail. part of a heavily traveled bucks county road is still shut down 20 hours after a crash. easton road heading north is closed at oxford drive while crews clean up 4,000 gallons of spilled gas. it came from a fuel tanker that collided with a pickup truck in warrington last night. dozens of people were moved to an emergency shelter after their homes were evacuated. they were not allowed to return home until 3 a.m. a printing mistake may

have put bank customers' personal information into the wrong hands. sturdy savings bank which has several locations in cape may county says they are working to notify affected customers. hundreds of people may be getting someone else's bank statements in the mail a the bank's ceo ensured everyone's money is safe. >> philadelphia police department is reportedly drafting its first ever tattoo policy. that after an officer was photographed in september with tattoos that some said resembled nazi symbols. that officer was cleared of any wrongdoing but the department will not discuss what the new policy will prohibit or what officers with tattoos will have to do in the future until the policy is implemented. from our delaware news room the wilmington police department has 18 new officers. today graduates of the 97th wilmington police academy took the oath of office. proud family members and friends were there for the ceremony. the new officers begin their assignments next monday. >> good luck to them. time now for another update on the highways and byways on a friday night. >> over to matt pelman in the

"action news" traffic center with the latest. hey, matt. >> we're not thinking monday yet. we're thinking all about friday and about the weekend which is pretty much upon us now rick and monica, but first we have to get home and getting home on the schuylkill is always a slow go on a friday night. you can steep from this shot here at the conshohocken curve. eastbound especially heavy. it's a stop and go ride eastbound from 202 from this point into gladwyne. as you guys just mentioned they're still cleaning up in warrington from that big overturned tanker last night so yes northbound lanes of 611 still blocked off at valley square boulevard by the home deep poem again, 309 limekiln pike, york road 263 would all be some possible alternates. but better news in center city. they've reopened market street to vehicle traffic. pedestrian traffic still can't walk by the lowes hotel because of the falling ice. have a crash in northern liberties at front and girard and a broken down truck partially blocking the ramp from 676 southbound to the walt there in camden. elsewhere in south jersey, there's a vehicle fire on the new jersey turnpike southbound approaching exit seven but
