today's holiday to stage "not my president's day" rallies all across the nation. thousands are expected to protest in l.a., new york, chicago and possibly two other cities. more than 1,000 people gathered in times square to protest immigration policies. demonstrators held american flags and held signs saying "i am muslim too", and "no muslim ban". new guidelines are being planned from dhs secretary john kelly. they include hiring more agents, speeding up deportation hearings and making local law enforcement to make arrests. the guide line also make it harder to seek asylum in the u.s. overseas where a $100,000 rye wa reward is being offered on a deadly bombing in somalia. it happened in mogadishu this weekend. although no group has claimed

responsibility, it bears the hallmarks of al shabab. the battle for iraq's second-largest city is on again. iraqi forces have launched a ground offensive to retake the western side of mosul from isis militants. the eastern side was lyiberated last month. it is the last-remaining stronghold by isis in iraq. the aircraft carrier uss carl vinson is now patrolling the south china sea. it's where china has created man-made islands. the navy described its presence and routine. last week, china warned against challenging its sovereignty. and the latest in the apparent assassination of kim jong un's half brother. kim jong nam was killed in malaysia last week. malaysia has now recalled its ambassador to north korea as tensions grow between the two

countries. the crime caught on surveillance video. here's abc's matt gutman with the pictures. >> reporter: all it took was 2.3 seconds to deliver death. grainy airport security video obtained by japanese tv station purportedly showing a single, swift move in which one of two female assassins sneaks up on kim jong nam from behind, covered his face with a cloth laced with a lake wiiquid. later this video showing kim jong nam desperately seeking help from airport security. >> there's every indication based on north korea's history that this was a targeted kill. >> reporter: police say these women were one of the killers. police show her tracking kim jong nam throughout kuala lumpur airport. both are now under arrest. the other woman claims she thought this was part of a

comedy show prank. two autopsies have been conducted. he enjoyed frequenting places like their girls bar. but north korea has rejected the autopsies. there's now a manhunt for four north cray north korean suspects in malaysia. kim jong un is accused of killing off his own uncle and hundreds of government officials over the past couple years. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> many questions there. now the northwest is bracing for more severe storms, especially in northern california. heavy rain han snow in the mountains are expected through the night and the day. forecasters are warning that flash flooding and mudslides are likely even as residents clean up from last week's storms. many residents have bags packed in case they must evacuate their homes as rivers and reservoirs rise.

oroville dam, the waters receding giving a better view of the damage. even with more rain in the forecast, they believe the dam will hold. friday's storm now blamed for at least five deaths in southern california, where they are now cleaning up from some extreme damage. crews repairing interstate 15 after it crumbled, taking this fire truck with it minutes after the crew escaped. so many clearing away trees brought down by high winds and finally, moving vehicles trapped in mud. >> we had to dig out the cars and literally pull them out. >> reporter: and efforts to focus the road and sewage pipe beneath after two cars were swallowed by this massive sinkhole, marci gonzalez. >> that is insane. let's get complete weather picture for northern california. >> my hometown. cam tran joins us with details.

>> we are looking at very stormy weather out west once again. we have rain moving in and another major storm on tap for tonight and tomorrow. locally higher amounts especially across the central valleys of california and foothills, and that includes the oroville area. we're expecting snow in the higher elevations of the sierras as well. on top of that, winds will be blustery. right along the coastlines, gusts of over 60-65 miles per hour. now in texas, a separate storm system will bring heavy rain across southeast texas, including houston and the galveston area where we have flash flood watches in effect. in washington this week, the week ahead begins with a continued search for a national security adviser. the president met yesterday with at least four possible replacements for michael flynn. the list includes acting national security adviser keith kellogg, former u.s. ambassador to the u.n., john bolton,

lieutenant general h.r. mcmaster and lieutenant general robert cass lynn. the weekend ended with the white house explaining the president's remarks about sweden at a saturday rally. the comments seemed to indicate there was some sort of attack on the nordic nation on friday. >> you look at what's happening in germany. you look at what's happening last night in sweden. sweden. who would believe this? sweden. >> now a spokesperson says the reference was to rising crime in sweden. not a specific incident. the president tweeted he'd seen the information on a television news report. and vice president mike pence is in brussels today for meetings with nato and european union officials. the vice president and his wife and daughter visited a nazi concentration camp. they placed a wreath at the center of the camp. more than 200,000 people were held at dachau.

and about 40,000 died there. the vice president also addressed a security conference in munich during his overseas stint. at that same conference, lindsey graham urged the president to take action against russia over alleged attempts to interfere in the u.s. presidential elections. graham told a group of world leaders that congress needed to get involved to make sure russia faced consequences. >> to my friend mr. lavrov, i hope you finally suffer some consequences for what you and your regime have been doing to democracies in 2017 is going to be a year of kicking russia in the ass in congress. >> some tough language there. he says he plans to introduce a bipartisan motion for new sanctions against russia. russia has repeatedly denied meddling in the election. >> some people calling it tough language. others getting a quick laugh out of it. in new jersey, a pilot survived the crash of his plane

right in the middle of a neighborhood. the pilot was briefly trapped inside. no one on the ground was hurt. but four cars were destroyed or damaged. that piloted is now in the hospital. and a freak accident in the bronx. a customer was trapped between shelves when a minute ivan crashes into a convenience store in the bronx. food and merchandise tumbled on top of him, but he is remarkably going to be okay. >> incredible. investigators in a washington, d.c. suburb are searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a multi-million dollar home. there were no hydrants nearby. something neighbors have complained about before. >> reporter: this is what's left of a multi-million dollar mansion in a northern virginia suburb. >> fire had gone through the roof. >> reporter: fire gutted this 6,000 square foot home, nestled in a neighborhood not far from

the cia headquarters. fire crews were on the scene in moments, dowsing the flame from their own water supply. but it took over 20 minutes to tackle the fire with water from a hydrant over 2,000 feet away. nearly ten propane tanks sitting near the house threatened to make matters worse. >> sound like propane let loose in the house. >> they had to cool those tanks as well as suppress the fire in order to try to gain some control of the fire. >> reporter: the house is owned by the embassy of the united arab emirates, everyone including two dogs escaped safely, smoke alarms tipping them off. >> thankfully, they had smoke alarms and they alerted the occupants who were here. >> reporter: there's what's left an of the washer and drier.
