oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture. the presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered was immediately corrected. what people may not realize is there are actually two copies of each winner envelope so emma stone said she had hers with her name on it but it turns out there was another envelope backstage and that one must have been what ended up in warren beatty's hands, guys. >> because, you're right, they have on each end of the stage because they don't know which way the presenters will come out. >> i guess we don't know who gave it to them. you got to feel bad for him. though. >> what i feel bad about we're not talking about "moonlight." it is so deserving of what it won and best picture and our super fan, you agree too with that, right? >> i saw it coming. they did it. i agree. i felt so bad for the "la la land" cast because it's an

own black-tie dinner hosting the governors ball ahead of his first address to congress tomorrow night. calling for a special prosecutor to investigate any ties between his campaign and russia, jon karl has more. >> reporter: as the president prepares for his first speech to a joint session of congress, he is facing calls for a special prosecutor to investigate russia's meddling in the campaign. overnight the president and first lady hosted their first white house gala. honoring the nation's governors and joking about how tough his job is. >> i just want to salute and toast the governors, the great governors, such an easy job you have. >> reporter: earlier in the day president trump lashed out at growing questions about russian influence in the election tweeting russia talk is fake news put out by the dems and played up by the media in order to mask the big election defeat and illegal leaks. but it's not just news. there are multiple bipartisan

congressional investigations and an fbi investigation and now a prominent house republican is calling on the attorney general to appoint an independent special prosecutor to review the case. >> you cannot have somebody, a friend of mine, jeff sessions, who was on the campaign and who is an appointee. >> reporter: the white house says it's premature to ask whether attorney general jeff sessions should recuse himself from anything to do with the investigations. >> let's not go to the very end of the extreme. let's let this play out the way that it should. >> reporter: the white house is also facing demands for an investigation into the special operations raid in yemen that was approved by president trump last month and cost the life of navy s.e.a.l. ryan owens. white house press secretary sean spicer had said any suggestion the raid was not a success was out of bounds. >> i think anyone who would suggest it's not a success does disservice to the life of chief ryan owens. >> reporter: but now the father of chief owens is calling for an investigation and revealing he refused to meet with president

speech about the supporting actress when he said let's oppose without hatred. that sort of framed the night. it was opposition to donald trump but it wasn't bitter and hateful. >> and so far at least the president has shown some restraint this morning, as well. we haven't gotten a tweet yet. >> well, i actually think he's probably celebrates the gulf that exists between hollywood and middle america and his supporters so i think he's probably going to wake up or has woken up and not so -- it doesn't feel so bad about what happened. the other thing is i believe in this rule of threes, george and the rule is threes is when bizarre things happen or shocking things happen in three, we had election night, we had the super bowl and now we had what happened at the end of the oscars with "moonlight" and "la la land." >> you think we're done with that now? >> i think it's actually the "moonlight"/"la la land" to me was such a great moment in this because the producers of "la la land" were so gracious in what they did and then price waterhouse cooper unlike many leadership especially in

guys are my friends and i wanted to make sure they had their moment. >> when did you realize what was happening? >> there was a lot of confusion on stage and at a certain point, it was clear that the wrong envelope had gun given and it's been a -- showed us the best picture envelope and it said "moonlight" and that's when i sort of jumped to the mike and made sure everyone knew what was going on and showed the card. people needed clarity at that moment. >> i think you said something on everybody's mind. people thought this has to be a joke. >> yeah, no, i mean it -- it -- there was a lot of confusion and chaos and it didn't look like there was any order whatsoever so just kind of jumped in and showed them the card because when everybody saw the writing i think it was really clear this was something that was happening. >> it was clear as you look back on it all, it was clear that warren beatty was looking for help, as well. he knew something was wrong.

>> yeah, i mean, listen, he was like this slow, steady realization that something wasn't right. and it needed to be corrected so jumped in and did it. >> did you get a chance to speak afterwards. talked about your friends on "moonlight." did you get a chance to talk to barry jenkins. >> no, i saw -- i went over to the governors ball and saw barry and mahershala, i saw jeremy and a bunch of those people and spending a lot of time together. "la la land" premiered in venice and telluride and with "moonlight" for the past five, six months we've really been on the road together doing this whole journey and they've become really close friends of mine. and, you know, we kind of shared a moment, shared hugs and congratulated each other on our work and, you know, but put it all behind us and sort of moved forward and do more work together. >> "la la land," tremendous picture and won a lot of awards even if you didn't get the best

for you to be on that oscar stage in front of all those people, millions around the world. >> it was absolutely spectacular. i mean, i have no words to fully describe it which is why speechless was exactly the right caption for me. i just felt so much love and support and i will remember this for the rest of my life. >> really remember it, as well. there was also a memorable moment, kind of a flag kind of got in the way there, a little hiccup. tell us what happened there and how you kept going. >> yes, that is -- i'm glad someone noticed it, yeah, i did get a little bump on the head. it was kind of like a hey, you're at the oscars. it was a good reminder. things happen and you just got to kind of roll with it. >> you are a pro. because you never would have known it happened because you just kept on going. you didn't miss a beat. what was it like to work with the rock and lin-manuel miranda? >> oh, it was absolutely
