storm preparations. walter perez is live in lehigh county and sarah bloomquist is at philadelphia international airport but we begin with adam joseph and cecily tynan our meteorologists with the veryccu. adam what's this latest information on the blizzard upgrade. >> the blizzard warning has been upgraded for parts of the area where we'll see and blinding snow squalls as well as reducedthat's for southeasten pennsylvania, northern new jersey but this just basically means it is a powerful nor'easter that will be coming together here over the next 12 to 24 hours. the the surface low o mexico. we have energy to the north and west. you can see the copious amounts of precipitation riding up the eastern seaboard both from now the atlantic and two will merge into again that blockbuster of a storm off the carolinas rapidly deepens and again, kind of explodes over our region. that have been upgraded for most of southeastern pennsylvania, chester county, montgomery county, bucks county, trenton and mercer

county all point to the and west into the poconos where we will experience blizzard conditions. this is from midnight through 4:00 p.m. on tuesday and still winter storm warnings for philadelphia and most of southern new jersey and delaware. so, with that that blizzard warning, what it means, whyp ite of the combination of how much snow is going to fall at a rate of an inch to 3-inches an hour and then you combine it with winds of over 35 miles an hour, reducing visibility to a quarter mile so the two of those combined, that lasts three hours or longer, makesit a blizzard so again, it's the combination of wind and it's the combination of reduced visibility. the storm time line 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. as the snow arrives, the height of the storm 3 a.m. to noon and mid to late after nor'easter it wraps up and moves out and are looks like mainly snow philadelphia north and west. that mixing of sleet at times for wilmington interior southern new jersey and mainly rain in those far southern areas. so, it's all about location

cecily and also there are many other factors of this storm than just the precipitation. >> that's exactly right adam. along the coast will be missing out on the heavy snow. however the coast is not going to get off easy with this storm. coastal flood warning posted for are moderate flooding. potential for six to 9-foot breakers high tide between 9:15, 10:haven't. winds also major factor. at the height of the storm when the storm is really intensifying the quickest as it's hugging the coast off shore we're looking at winds along the coast 50 to 60 more than gust so a high wind warning has been posted there and even inland we're looking at wind gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour. that the could cause a lothat cf problems. the biggest concerns this is going to be a heavy wet snow and the snowflake rate at the hi height of the storm one to 3 inches per hour.

that causes low and visibility, roads will be covered in snow. you really do want to hunker down, stay inside, stay off the roads, if you can, tomorrow and again, with that wind, a possibility of widespread power outages so a good idea to prepare for that. as far as the snow amounts, northwest you're going to get buried. across south jersey, though, location is really a key. we go from millville to roxborough about 45 miles but the snow will be increasing by about a foot in this very sharp gradient so we'll talk about specifically how much snow to expect where you live. also talk about what's behind this storm system coming up in the full accuweather forecast. sharrie. >> okay, cecily, thank you. "action news"'s walter perez live now at the penndot salt yard in emmaus lehigh county one of the areas expected to get hit the hardest. walter. >> reporter: hey, sharrie. if nothing else penndot is ready. tomorrow is expected to be easily the biggest snow event of the year in this part of the with 70,000 tons of salt yet to be used,

penndot will begin deploying its 209 vehicle lehigh valley fleet very early tomorrow morning. it's been mild this winter and spring begins in about a week but it seems old man winter sw. that's why news of this impending snowstorm had albright hardware in allento iws especially busy for shop employees pulling out winter goods after spending last two weeks selling seeds and garden equipment. >> it's one of those things when we don't get snowtready fod that's all that we can do. store was all set for springtime but winter came back again so we just got all the shovels ice melt and snowblowers out again. find your snow shovel because this one promise especially here in the lehigh valley where they're expecting around foot and a half of snow with strong winds. penndot officials are not mincing words about it. they say driving around tomorrow morning ise at out dan. >> we always think not to

travel but this is big one. we want to strongly encourage people if it's not absolutely necessary, please stay home and wait until things are a little better. >> reporter: we asked a few people from allentown what they plan to do during the storm. most replied saying there's not much you can do. >> take my snowblower out on take care of a few of the neighbors, do mine and i go back in the house and sit and wait for the snow to finish. >> enjoy it the best i can. get my atv with the plow and my snowblower up and running and going. god's going to do what he's going to do. >> reporter: once again penndot asked us to emphasize that driving tomorrow especially in the morning is going to be very, very dangerous but if you have no choice, though, take it very slow. do not try to pass any plows or salt trucks and maintain a very safe driving distance between yourself and the nearest vehicle. reporting live from allentown, walter perez channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, walter, thank you.

dozens of townships and municipalities have already or are preparing to declare snow emergencies come tonight. that includes the city of philadelphia. the emergency goes into effect at 9 o'clock. people must remove all cars from the snow emergency routes so that they do not block the plows. city officials say they will begin ticketing at midnight and we are expecting mayor jim kenney to give an update on philadelphia's plan, his update coming in in about an hour or so. of course we'll bring you that information as soon as it comes in. >> meantime at the action cam rode along with road crews this afternoon in camden county. trucks are already spreading salt on the roads to help drivers with traction tonight. to the south in delaware state crews are ready to deal with whatever mother nature throws their way. the action cam was in christiana at the department of transportation yard as workers loaded up the salt trucks. they brined the primary and secondary roads yesterday to give crews rest today. all of the trucks with access to more than 50,000 tons of

salt will be ready to hit the road as soon as the first flakes start to fall. the approaching nor'easter is already having a ripple effect on travel. airlines are canceling flights in philadelphia international airport as well as you and down the east coast. "action news"'s sarah bloomquist is live at the airport where travelers are urged to be flexible and to call ahead. sarah. >> reporter: rick, that's right. it's busy here this afternoon but expected to be very, very quiet here at philadelphia international airport tomorrow. airlines including american, spirit and southwest are canceling all flights ahead of time for tomorrow. some of those airlines including american are going to try to get up and running again, get some flights out starting in the early evening. in the meantime, though, passengers got the message and they're getting out of town early. mondays always busy here at philadelphia international airport but a bit more so today as travelers changed their flights to beat the

impending winter storm. >> i was supposed to fly out of newark at 5:00 a.m. on wednesday, so united sent out a warning 'cause of the weather coming in, so yesterday i called and i was able to get my flight changed. >> i'm flying down to see my sister in houston and when she heard about that, we heard about the snow she moved it up to today. i'll just be beating it out to get down there for a week. >> reporter: as early as friday airlines started contacting passengers. most carriers are offering to rebook flights without any fees. some are offering vouchers for travel terse who choose to go at a different time altogether. >> i just got a thing that said $150 if i wanted to delay my flight but i don't want to delay it 'cause i'm not going to get out. >> reporter: there were a few cancellations on the board today as winter weather impacts other cities including chicago. some airlines including american and spirit here in philadelphia hope to start flying again once the storm tapers off around 5 o'clock tomorrow evening. >> as soon as those first flakes start to fall, our crews will be out there will

>> a house fire in north philadelphia sends two people to the hospital this morning. chopper6 hd was overhead as crews tried to get the upper hand of the flames shooting through the roof. in all first responders rescued at least four people who were trapped. the home, which is on the 3500 block of north 23rd street partially collapsed on the inside making it more difficult to fight the fire

the fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause. >> in tampa florida today a mother of five has been found alive. her husband accused of kidnapping her. 37-year-old alisa summers was reported missing over the weekend. today the search is over. this afternoon we found out that her estranged husband, 39-year-old trevor summers is under arrest. saturday night witnesses told deputies they saw a screaming woman being forced into an suv with her hands tied behind her back in a pharmacy parking werparking ltoday police trackeo of them down in a hotel. >> she was in the back seat, he was in the front seat of the car. he has been taken to the hospital. he has a -- what appears to be a self inflicted knife wound to his throat area. she also has a -- a wound to her wrist that may have been inflicted by him. >> officials say trevor pleaded guilty to a wire fraud

and conspiracy scheme here in philadelphia federal court last september. he is set to be sentenced on wednesday. well, since all of that happened alisa filed for divorce. the couple has five children together and police say trevor convinced their 14-year-old daughter to leave a window opened at alisa's house which is apparently how he got inside and abducted her. police says she upset and they're interviewing her to get more details but she's alive and that's the news they were hoping for sharrie. >> alicia thank you. two former high ranking penn state university and officials reached a surprise plea deal related to the jerry sandusky case. tim curley the exathletic director and gary schultz the university's former vice president both pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment. prosecutors said the two failed to report a complaint that sandusky was seen abusing a boy in a team shower. the school's ex president graham spanier is also charged.

jury selection in his trial is scheduled for next week. >> all right. time now for an update on that accuweather forecast. >> it a. and a busy one with the snow heading our way. meteorologist adam joseph here now with more details for us. >> yeah, the places that are rejoicing so to speak here is all of the ski resorts especially here inly spring mountain live on sky6 you can see they have snow on the slopes. they've been making snow this past weekend with all that cold air and now this area will get the jackpot with blizzard warnings expected during the day tomorrow. right now 33 allentown, 38 in reading, 37 in wilmington. we are sitting at 40 philadelphia and millville but these numbers will be dropping overnight tonight and staying on the low side as we get into the day tomorrow. so, satellite and radar, the clouds are moving in from the south and west and you can start to see the first little edge of some showers now working up south of washington. those showers and what will bump into the colder air changing to snow will that continue to make their journey to the north and start falling here a few hours after sunset. as we look at a wider scope

here down to the south, the actual low is still in the gulf of mexico, so you can see the moisture already spilling well up the eastern seaboard. also energy near saint louis will inject into this low and deepen into further as we go into tuesday. 11 o'clock tonight snow breaking out and it starts as snow even in those southern areas like dover and millville and you can see it spreading north and west of philadelphia at 11:00 as well. turns heavier 3 o'clock in the morning. this is when the heart of the storm starts to kick into gear at 3 a.m. but also you notice the warmer air taking over in southern areas changing it to rain dover millville atlantic city and that sleet line kind of flirting with wilmington and philadelphia at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning with heavy snow to the north and west. so, where the sleet line sets up will be very crucial when it comes to the amount of snow that falls with this storm. at 11 o'clock, that sleet line collapses back down to the south, still rain at the

shore, heavy snow to the north and west and by 5 o'clock tomorrow afternoon we're starting to kind of wind down the system as, again, the heaviest of it moves on. so, here's the very latest expected snowfall map and there's a lot of numbers and there's a lot of colors. you can go to our facebook pages because it will be in detail there, zoomed in as well but it's going to be a quick drop-off because of that mixing line so in philadelphia about 12 to 16-inches and the immediate northwestern suburbs. 16 to 2 feet plus closer to the lehigh valley. wilmington eight to 12 same for camden and gloucester county. drop off to two to four to coating to an inch in those areas coating to as much as 4-inches in millville it will be wiped out by rain. wind gusts 65 miles an hour southern areas 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, 45 philadelphia with those powerful winds expect power outages but 5 o'clock those winds really start to back off as the storm moves away. the four day at 4:00 forecast, tomorrow it's that powerful

nor'easter with blizzard conditions expected in philadelphia to the north at 34 degrees. coastal effects with erosion and flooding down the shore. it's still windy cold with leftover snow showers on wednesday, a high of just 29. still cold but sunny thursday, 36 and partly sunny on friday for saint patrick's day of 38 degrees. a lot more to go over in the next half hour i'm going to zoom in south of philadelphia to show you that sharp cutoff of the snow totals. >> all right adam. school closings already coming in as we mentioned philadelphia public schools closed tomorrow,archdiocesan and parochial schools closed. >> we like seeing the busy traffic this afternoon because hopeful technological rick and sharrie it means people will be able to hang out at home on the couch tomorrow when it does start snowing. for now it's dry just plenty

busy here on the schuylkill expressway. eastbound from 202 through this point at the blue route into the conshohocken curve had a crash there early this afternoon but it's gone now. speed restrictions go up on all of the major area interstates starting at 10:00 tonight. 45 miles per hour will be the max at that point through the duration of the storm tomorrow. at this point we would be lucky to be doing 45 on parts of the schuylkill. just 6 miles per hour. had a broken down vehicle in pennsauken along the admiral wilson boulevard at the airport circle. that just cleared out. it's a busy week in center city with the flower show on this afternoon in center city there's a crash involving a box truck here on the local vine westbound at 15th by the new norman temple. also have a crash in glenside to avoid along easton road by sloane toyota. new construction closure started in hilltown township bucks county. 313 dublin mike now shut down for the next couple months. callowhill road or elephant road some alternates. we'll check it again, rick and sharrie, coming up in the next half hour. >> all right, matt, see you then. thank you. we'll take a quick break.

>> in delaware efforts to renovate and rebuild vacant properties will that continue thanks to a big financial award. governor john carney and various city and state officials were on hand in wilmington for the announcement. delaware state housing authority will receive $5.5 million from various mortgage settlements. the money will be used for the strong neighborhoods housing fund. already several homes are currently under construction thanks to the pilot program. >> the big flower show is under way in philadelphia and today there were beautiful sounds to match the beautiful images. >> ♪ well, that is the george weldon jazz trio. they brought the jefferson train station alive today as crowds of septa riders made their way to the flower show at the convention center. this year's theme is holland flowering the world. the musical greeting is all part of the week long events

storm system brewing to our south and west at this hour. >> though the first snowflakes aren't expected to start falling until around 10 o'clock tonight, schools are already closing for tomorrow. that includes all philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools. >> the reason, it may look sunny right now but potentially dangerous changes are on the way and we have live team coverage to help you get ready. let's begin though with meteorologist adam joseph live now at the "action news" big board with a look at what's coming our way. adam. >> yes, storm tracker6 live double scan shows it's not just our area that is going to be blasted by this winter storm. blizzard warnings up for parts of southeastern pennsylvania. they extend through new york city, long island, connecticut, massachusetts, even coastal maine so many areas are going to get walloped by this winter storm that is now beginning to develop in the deep south. the primary low is in the gulf of mexico and you can see the line of thunderstorms also developing. this along with energy to the north and west will create a new low off of the carolinas and it will deepen fast enough

that we take advantage of all of that moisture and that strengthening storm as it passes by. so o-you do not want to be on the roads anywhere between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. that is really the height of the storm. the strongest winds. the heaviest snowfall rates, especially philadelphia to the north and west. very heavy rain along the coastal communities southern new jersey and delaware where it does change to rain but then it starts to improve quickly during the late afternoon, so if you had to, and i stress that, venture out, wait until very late, 4 o'clock or even after that. as we take a look at the expected snowfall totals by region, it varies big time. in the lehigh valley 16 to 24 is what we're expecting. around pottstown, six to 12-inches. around center city about a foot of snow on either side because of mixing with sleet at times but then you go to millville, just 45 miles to the south it drops to two to 4 inches and in cape may only expecting a coating of snow out of this that washes away

with rain. well, we'll take a look at future tracker six and show you a very cold seven-day forecast that follows the storm rick in just a little bit with that full accuweather forecast. >> adam we'll check back in later. thank you. in the meantime, this is a live picture at the penndot maintenance yard in norristown montgomery county where officials are updating their plans or about to update their plans to deal with the forecast. governor tom wolf is already ordered speed limits to be reduced to 45 miles per hour on all area interstates and express ways starting at 10 o'clock tonight. we'll bring you an update on penndot's new strategy, we'll listen in on the news and we'll bring you the very latest a little bit later on "action news." >> although the storm is still hours away, it's already impacting travel across the northeast. more than 4,000 flights have been canceled for today and tomorrow. fortunately most carriers are offering to rebook flights without any fees or offering vouchers for those who want to cancel their trip altogether. philadelphia international airport is urging travelers to be proactive and stay in close

touch with their carriers. now, because of our unseasonably warm winter, many in the delaware valley were already looking ahead to spring and that means many spent the day rushing to restock their snow supplies. "action news" reporter bob brooks went along with a few shoppers today. bob is live for us now outside a hardware store in lafayette hill with that part of the story today. bob. >> reporter: sharrie, we're at holly's true value and they love this. that's because they're making money and as we know money is nice. they're selling all kinds of stuff because of that storm. some of it right there. a lot of salt here. you can see not too busy right now. they have plenty down here. they said they were slammed last night. they'll be opened late tonight if you need some. from salt to shovels, someone even bought a brand new snowblower. the register was ringing all day at the true value in lafayette hill. hard to believe after some of

>> reporter: but one young man who is embracing it dominic. he plows and he wants to make some money. >> yeah, i want 2 feet but 6-inches would be all right. >> reporter: he's one of the very few people that are hoping for 2 feet. another live look out here at hall's. got the salt, all kinds of supplies here. if you need some and check this place out. check out any hardware stores. we are expecting a lot of snow for this storm. reporting live in lafayette hill, bob brooks channel6 "action news." rick. >> bob, thank you. a late winter storm is also hitting several other states from the southeast to the midwest. whiteout conditions in iowa caused vehicles to skid off the road. parts of minnesota got up to 9-inches of snow. the brunt of the flight cancellations are in chicago. crews spent the day deicing planes there. in upstate new york five days of freezing temperatures left a house encased entirely in ice. the state is now bracing for up to 2 feet of snow from this impending storm. the white house has directed fema to be prepared to help

the addition in ally officers at the maximum security vaughn correctional center in smyrna. in the meantime officials have already allocated hundreds of thousands of dollars for new equipment and additional training. >> there was a stunning discovery at an olde city construction site. hundreds of coffins found buried in the ground. today we found out more about where those remains are headed. heavy as it's been recently because the sun glare doesn't really affect us now with the tame change until a little bit later. at this point it's not quite as bright as it has been in recent afternoons but still some heavy southbound traffic. now is the time, though, to get out and be out and about. we don't want you to leave the ranch tomorrow, stay at home if you can during the snowstorm. we're watching a crash in south philadelphia at penrose and pattison by the sunoco station. sounds pretty bad, most of the lanes blocked. stay up on passyunk oregon or as alternates. slow speeds on 95 with normal afternoon volume. let's check this spot right here its local vine street westbound near 15th by the new mormon temple. a crash involving a box truck taking out the left lane. traffic can squeeze by but it's congested there in center city. have a crash to watch out for in huntington valley by the td bank along philmont avenue. were uncleared in glenside from easton road but now there's one in jenkintown along old york road at rydal

ago today, we were dealing with the blizzard of 93. >> really? >> 24 years later, we're talking about another blizzard on the same day. >> i was teenager then holy cow. >> i wasn't born. [laughter] >> just kidding, i was born. >> i was born twice. >> storm tracker6 live double scan, you can -- i was just out of high school. so i was here. storm tracker6 live double scan you can see nothing going on now. clouds increasing from the south. give it a few hours and we'll start to see the radar lighting up from the south to the north. we're in the 30's across much of the area. 40 philadelphia, 40 in millville. we've got that wind coming in out of the east off of the ocean of 42 and that's the problem this time of year, you get a strong enough storm to pull that wind in off the ocean around the low and that's why it changes to rain and we are expecting that in a good chunk of southern new jersey and delaware. satellite and radar, you can see again some of the rain and you see a little bit of white and some of the blue and pink showing up, which is the mixture of some sleet and rain and snow with that but that's

just the leading edge. this extends all the way down to the south. low developing in the gulf of mexico. energy to the north and west. they collide. they come together in perfect timing just before they pass our coast to give us this powerful nor'easter and it's going to tap into moisture all the way from bermuda and the bahamas. 10 o'clock you see snow and rain starting in far southern areas overspreads the region very late tonight, early tomorrow morning and that rain line trying to progress. dover, millville, atlantic city, there's that sleet area in the blue. and really it is going to come down to when the storm starts to try to figure out where this sleet line lies. is it just to the north and west of philadelphia? early tomorrow morning? or does it stay just to the south and east? and very heavy rain to the south, very heavy rain to the north and west. then clock in th10 o'clock in te

sleet line flirting with the city, heavy snow to the north and west and then it starts top wind up, rap up and move off to the north late tomorrow afternoon. so expected snow totals, it is a very large amount of difference from the north to the south. 16 to 24-inches lehigh valley up into the poconos. a good 12 to 16-inches for northern western areas of philadelphia and then you collapse all the way down to nothing to the south. in fact, millville bridgeton, these areas may wash away to rain so these numbers really don't mean anything 'cause it's going to happen on the onset and then they wash away but four to 8-inches in this pink zone, eight to 12 anywhere between wilmington woodbury cherry hill, williamstown lansdale exton and doylestown. that is your 12 to 16-inches including trenton but again depending on that sleet line this could move to the north a little bit or this could push to the south a little bit and that's something we'll continue to iron out late tonight as well and again, it's going to be kind of a last minute thing where you kind of figure out where that

sleet is but many areas getting a lot of snow. the shore mainly rain up to an inch and a half, have are strong powerful winds 50 to 60 miles an hour, moderate coastal flooding on tuesday and also beach erosion. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, that powerful nor'easter with blizzard conditions in southeastern pennsylvania through much of the day on tuesday of 34. windy cold leftover snow showers on wednesday of 29 degrees. the sun's back in full force thursday at 36. looking good for saint patrick's day but cold and then the weekend is dry. we go back to the 40's. so, no big melting going on. no fast melting as we go into the beginning of next week. so, southern new jersey, delaware it's a lot of rain and a lot of snow to the north and west and again, power outages more than likely are going to happen because the wind at the shore and the heavy snow to the north and west. >> okay. >> okay. adam thank you. a special saint patrick's day edition of what's the deal is coming up next. >> ♪
