scouring the documents. josh good mornin >> reporter: diane and kendis we're nearly two months into the presidency of donald trump and questions tax returns continue to swirl over his administration. on tuesday night, the white house released trump's income and tax rate for 2005 in order to pre-empt an msnbc story they referred to as desperate for rating. pulitzer prize-winning journalist david kay johnson made the announcement on msnbc's rachel maddow show based on documents obtained by johnson, trump paid $36.5 million in taxes for a tax rate of roughly 24%. that percentage is below the 27.4% average for taxpayers earning $1 million a year. according to data from theressional joint committee on taxation. the white house numbers closely mirrored those released by johnson who claims he received the return unsolicited.

showing that the president paid $38 million in taxes on an income of more than $150 million. the president's return also shows that he declared $103 million in losses in 2005. >> that guy is a pulitzer prize winning journalist who said he received the partial return in the mail both pages of it. the white house details were released just before he appeared on msnbc. >> do you believe -- do we have reason to believe that the documents you just described there, were leaked by him, or is it just a possibility? >> it's a possibility and it could have been released by someone at his direction. with donald, you never know. >> he said in the past, he's had some things leaked to him from donald trump at the time. journalist david clay johnson said he got the two pages of the tax return in the mail. details that are not included in the partial return are the president's sources of income, and the types of deductions that he claimed. >> but democrats are now being

urged to not focus on the president's taxes so much and stay focused on the fight over health care. a lot of the argument now centers on the potentially damaging report from congressional budget analysts. >> yeah, so that report said the republican plan to replace obamacare, would result in millions of americans losing coverage over the next decade. cecilia vega has reaction from the white house. >> reporter: the president in the oval office with saudi royalty, asked about that report card on the republican plan to repeal and replace obamacare -- >> cbo score mr. president? >> reporter: the president sat stone-faced, no comment. but his press secretary, not holding back, saying the non-partisan congressional budget office has been wrong before. >> its attempts to estimate coverage have been historically faulty. >> reporter: but the numbers are stark. in ten years, 1 in 5 americans, 52 million people would be uninsured. >> can you stand here today and say that the president will keep his promise of insurance for everybody?

>> i think the president's job is to make insurance available to everybody, yes, what's what he intends to do. >> reporter: the reality for many americans could be harsh. a 64-year-old who earns a $26,000 salary could see a huge spike in their premiums. from $1700 a year under obamacare, to nearly $15,000 under the gop plan. a nearly $13,000 a year increase. the president also promised not to touch medicaid, but the republican plan with his name on it could make $880 billion in cuts to the program. democrats sounding the alarm. >> trumpcare would be a nightmare for the american people, causing tens of millions to lose coverage. >> reporter: trumpcare, the white house says not so fast. >> the obama administration didn't label it obamacare. they call it the aca. this is the american health care act. the president is proud of it.

still freezing. you guys are all warm in studio, but not so bad. a lot less snow than we thought we were going to get here in new york city and other east coast cities upstate new york. some places got upwards of 20 inches, sometimes falling as fast as four inches an hour. rapid snowfall up there. we missed out on the snow in new york, but what we did get was a lot of mess, ice, sleet, causing one nasty commute. officials warning that could continue. these freezing overnight temps could cause the roads to re-ice, warning about black ice now. also taking a look at air travel, severely impacted by this storm. all the major hubs had to cancel flights, nearly 6,000 flights canceled today. some airlines shutting down traffic entirely in new york city airports. one last major concern here, beach erosion. thanks to those high winds along the coast, some places in massachusetts raked in gusts of 80 miles per hour.
