criminals faster. nora muchanic has all the details. >> every time you'll hear like a little beep. >> reporter: hopewell township police officer is on route 31 watching traffic and the read out on his altr automatic license plate recognition system. using infared cameras he can scan the plates of vehicles coming and going past the patrol car. it takes the read and compares it to a bunch of different data bases that are downloaded in the system. if it comes up with a hit, it will say unregistered or suspended driver or wanted person or stolen motor vehicle. >> reporter: on march 20th, it was instrumental in the apprehension of two out of suspects who were wanted for the kidnapping and armed robbery of a truck driver in maryland.

it took just a second for the plate reader to alert the officer they were driving a stolen vehicle. >> it was a good hit, if we didn't have the system, those guys might be still out there. >> reporter: the mercer county prosecutor's office funded the camera system in 25 vehicles throughout the county. officers run plates manually, but the automated reader does it in an instant. the officer said on an average day it will scan 30 to 40,000 tags. >> this is what we do in a year, this is doing it in a day. >> reporter: technology like this is a plus for law enforcement. it allows officers to better do their job. nora muchanic channel 6 "action news." >> still tom come on "action news" saturday morning. new details about the fatal crash between a church bus and a pickup in texas.
