with the latest on this investigation. gray? >> reporter: alicia and rick, this all played out in this alleyway right behind me. we are in the early stages of this investigation. where we can tell you that one office officerfied his taser. the victim's mother understandably heart broken and hoping for some answers. >> that's my first born, my only son, my only biological son. i mean, he was my world. >> reporter: juanita wilcox says she wants answers after her 25-year-old son, kenneth johnson, died after an altercation with police wednesday afternoon. she got the news on the way home from work. >> police tried to subdue him but he was resistant for some reason and they basically just tased him, and he had a heart attack or something. something with his heart. >> reporter: officers say it started around 1:50 wednesday when they responded to two 911 calls about a domestic dispute. calls reported a woman was being

beaten and screaming that someone was trying to kill her. investigators say when they got to the scene, the victim had visible bruises on her legs and face. according to reports, police spotted johnson in an alley and attempted to arrest him, but they say he did not comply and resisted. investigators say there was a struggle between the officer and johnson. at some point, they say the officer fired his taser. >> i've been in this job for many, many years, and i am not aware of anyone losing their life because they were tasered. so there's a lot of very unusual circumstances here. >> reporter: this video "action news" received from a resident shows officers performing cpr as they waited for ems to arrive. they say they noticed that johnson was in some distress and not respondive. about an hour after they responded to the scene, johnson was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> why? give me some answers. what happened? i want to know what happened. why did you have to tase my son?

to their death and there's no conditions quens to -- consequence to that action. >> sentence something set for next month. new at 5:00, a lehigh valley high school teacher has been arrested for inappropriate sexual contact with a student. according to police, 34-year-old christopher johnson of bethlehem had sex with a student he had tutored multiple times. the victim's parents were alerted to the relationship when they found graphic text messages cell phone. johnson, a teacher at parkland high school, surrendered to police this afternoon. president donald trump is ramping up his fight against isis in the middle east. today, the u.s. military troped one of the largest nonnuclear bombs in its inventory in afghanistan. now, the technical term for the bomb is a gbu-43, but it is known as the mother of all bombs. the intended target was a series of isis cave complexes near the afghanistan-pakistan border. tonight the pentagon says the strike was designed to cause maximum damage while limiting

reserved now but from here to cherry hill out past the airport there is still some room at the inn. >> a panoramic view at of the parkway today from the rooftop of the logan hotel. two weeks out from the second biggest show in football, the nfl draft. local hotels are hoping for capacity crowds at the end of the month when an estimated 200,000 people are projected to be on the mall. 100,000 coming in from out of town. the president of the greater philadelphia hotel association says there's still a good number of hotel rooms available across the area. >> i'm sure that we're north of 75%. we still have a couple weeks to go before -- before we're done, so i -- i expect most of the hotels will do quite well, certainly in the city and probably mostly in the suburbs as well. >> reporter: do any random surveys indicate rates are being jacked up dramatically because of fanatics comes here for three days.

into philadelphia tonight. we've got big delays here on the eastbound side of the schuylkill, getting onto the eastbound side of the vine, up ahead on the ramp from the eastbound from the ben franklin bridge and 6th street to head into old city, there's an accident. so it's extra congested on the eastbound vine withly thats spilling back onto the eastbound schuylkill. but the westbound schuylkill travel times even worse. nearly 50 minutes. should be about 15. not this afternoon. have a crash near bonnet lane family restaurant along 611, old work road. there's one in pottstown at high street. if you want to use 422 instead, that's just fine. coming into delaware along 202, more construction today on the southbound side of powder mill road blocking two lanes and causing slowing. and there's a nasty crash in wilmington at 4th and union. definitely an intersection you want to avoid. we'll check it again, though, rick and leash ya coming up in the next half-hour. >> all right, matt. see you then. much more still ahead on "action news at 5" tonight. a legal showdown could be brewing for united airlines

"healthcheck" tonight -- a hospital in south jersey is using new tech nog to help more patients recover after a heart attack or stroke. >> "health" reporter ali gorman is at the big board with details. >> reporter: we're talking about cardiac rehabilitation. studies show people who do the rehab after suffering a heart problem are more likely to live longer and healthier lives. so a hospital in south jersey is making the therapy more convenient. the fitness machines at lord's house cardiac center aren't as busy as they used to be. just as many parks are assigned there, but some can now get their exercise where it suits them best.

david bye is one of them. last year after heart valve replacement, he and his doctor decided cardiac rehabilitation would be a good idea. >> exercise and to be monitored during that process. >> reporter: but instead of a 36-mile trip each way to the rehab center three times a week, bye qualified to use move-in. it's an app developed by a san francisco company. the app along with a fitness tracker on his wrist help him follow the rehab plan wherever he is. and director of the cardiac rehab center, mary ann classic wallace, says they can see everything on their end too. >> how much they're exercising, what their heart rate is. >> i'm able to exercise at home or in my local gym. >> if they're not attaining their target heart rate, we're advising them to increase their activity. >> reporter: bye says it also keeps tabs on his medication. >> taking pills, punch, yes, you

[ bell ] stocks fell today after news of the u.s. attack on eastern afghanistan. wall street was in the green earlier in the day. the dow jones fell 138 points to close the trading day, though. the nasdaq lost 31 and change. the s&p 500 was down almost 16. wall street will be closed tomorrow for good friday. philadelphia mayor jim kenney continues to highlight the benefits of the city's ben rich tax. the action cam was in southwest philadelphia where kenney and other city officials toured the recreation center. the city says this center is one of many that can benefit from philadelphia's rebuild program largely funded by the beverage tax. today leaders highlighted how tax dollars can improve

a day after the ceo of the embattled company poll jezed for the incident. abc's reporter is live in new york with more tonight. kenneth? >> reporter: rick and alicia, i can tell you that united passenger is said to be in a secure location. he accepts united's apology but that's not enough to let the company off the hook. dr. david dao, the man ripped from his united airlines' seat, and dragged down the aisle still shaken and horrified. >> it has been a very difficult time for our entire family. especially my dad. >> reporter: the kentucky doctor bumped from his flight to make room for united crew members sunday. but dao refused. he and his wife, also a doctor on board, had patients to see the next day. >> what happened to my dad should have never happened to any human being. >> will there be a lawsuit? yeah, probably. >> reporter: dow's attorney -- dao's attorney say the 69-year-old man suffered a concussion and broken nose.

news." >> thank you. president donald trump signed a bill today that allows states withhold title 10 federal funding from planned parenthood and other abortion providers. the senate narrowly passed the resolution at the end of march. the action overturned a rule enact last year by president barack obama that prevented states from defunding the providers. more than a dozen states have tried withholding funds from planned parenthood in recent years. this is the first major pro-life legislation to be signed into law in more than a decade. world series with david muir will have much more on the story including the latest on the united airlines passenger and you could watch that following "action news at 6". in other news tonight, a montgomery county father accused of beating his two children now face even more charges. 44-year-old joseph meyer was arraigned today on the additional felony counts related to alleged assault committed on his wife. the charges including aggravated assault and attempted

strangulation as well as unlawful restraint. police say he also abused his 11 and 13-year-old children over the past six years even shocking them with an electric dog collar and jamming small blades under their nails. in addition to $1 million was added to his bail today raising it to a total of $2 million. officials say this man, 44-year-old jose van gass is responsible for a series of sophisticated rooftop burglaries throughout montgomery county. it happened between february 6th and march 5th. prosecutors say he and a juvenile accomplice got into stores and is through skylights, drain pipes, and ductworks. he allegedly got away with more than $100,000 in cash and jewelry. he's being held tonight on $99,000 bail. dozens of firefighters made quick work of a fast-moving blaze in south philadelphia overnight. this is the scene just after 12:30 along the 800 block of washington avenue. authorities say the fire started in the roof area of the

members of camden county sheriff's department said this was the most reward thing they did all day -- giving blood. it was a blood drive at council chambers and responsered by sheriff gilbert bert wit wilson one of the first to donate. today's event was organized by the american red cross but it was up to the sheriff's department to get the word out and to come by and help their community by helping out and rolling up their sleeves. a seal in delaware and even crossed a busy highway during a snowstorm is on his way to a more suitable home. this is a phil and he first showed up at the murder kill river near bourse beach right before christmas. experts think he was chasing fish. normally, harbor seals should be in saltwalter so they were anxious to get him into the bay. instead, he moved to killen's pond. so today, staffers were the

action district where isis has been operating close to the pakistan border. the bomb meshes about -- measures about 30 feet long, so big that it's dropped from an air force 130 cargo plane. specific presidential authority is not needed to use the bomb. and plans have been apparently been in the offing going back to the obama administration. damage estimates are still going on, but this we know. the moab is 11 tons of explosives and they dropped it today for the first time.
