>> love you, too. >> this is where my house used to be. this was 116 eustice street where i grew up. >> reporter: while some faces are the same -- he's finding you can't go home again, if home's not there. >> the tree's gone now, where i used to climb all the time. >> reporter: the climbing tree is gone, and the boy grew into a man. he's now telling his story about the highs of celebrity, the depths of great loss, and every little step along the way. boston 1982, and bobby brown and his friends team up for talent night at the strand theater. the boys come in second, but won something even better -- the attention of local music producer maurice starr. he helps polish their moves, record an album in this humble studio, and get a record deal. new edition was born. we went back to the stage where

up on stage. >> ladies and gentlemen, new edition! >> reporter: with synchronized steps and bubble gumcharm, they danced their way to hit after hit. ♪ cool it now ♪ you got to cool it now ooh watch out ♪ >> reporter: meanwhile, 200 miles away in new jersey, another teenager is about to have her life changed by music as well. a former covergirl named whitney houston has just signed her first major record deal with clive davis' arista records. ♪ i'm savin' all my love -- >> reporter: her 1985 debut album, "whitney," would win the young talent her first grammy. ♪ that same year was less of a celebration for bobby brown. his need to be in the center spotlight and ongoing tensions with the other members of new edition could no longer be ignored. were you voted out?

or did you leave on your own? >> i was voted out of the group because i would do the opposite, you know, of what they told new edition to do. i was my own man at a young age. and i just wanted what i wanted. i was still ready to do what i wanted to do. and the music that i wanted to do. >> reporter: a struggling bobby moves to l.a. and finds modest success as a solo artist. the now young father admits to selling drugs to get by. but when he is matched up with rising music producers l.a. reid and babyface, he finally finds his sound, and his voice. >> bobby decides he's going to do a song, you know, that really speaks to how he feels about what people say about him. when you see the video and you see him performing, you say, "that's a star, and that's a hit single." ♪ everybody's talkin' all this stuff about me why don't they just let me live ♪

1989 mtv video awards. abc's chris connelly was there. >> at some point during this performance, a vial comes out of hi clothes, and while he's dancing, he picks up the vial and keeps going. and from that moment on, you sort of thought, i wonder what's going on with bobby brown. >> reporter: what was going on? a lot of indulging in drugs, and women, he says, among them -- janet jackson and madonna. but there was one story i really couldn't ignore. i can't even believe it when i ask you this, but i have to. >> what -- >> reporter: you -- you had sex with a ghost? >> a ghost. yeah, yeah. >> reporter: come on, man. tell me about it. >> i moved into this house, i bought this mansion in georgia. so this was a really, really spooky place. but yes, one time -- i woke up, and yeah, a ghost. i was being mounted by a ghost. i wasn't high. >> reporter: that was my next question. >> i wasn't high. judgment. >> now you broke tradition a little bit and saw her before the wedding. >> uh-huh. well, that was the first time i had actually saw her do drugs. >> cocaine. >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: bobby says in his book, he found his bride-to-be, quote, "hunched over a bureau snorting a line of coke." he says she offered him a hit, but he didn't indulge at that moment. what went through your mind when you saw that? >> she wasn't that. you know what i'm saying? the drugs wasn't her. she did drugs, but drugs didn't do her. she knew how to handle herself. it only made me, you know, love and wanna protect her more. >> people said to me the one thing that they heard over and over again, that you were the one that led whitney to heavy drug use, that you were the one. >> it wasn't me that started her.

i take my part, and i take it hard for me even being a part of it, but we all have our own minds, and some of us are stronger than others. >> reporter: that was their lives in private. in public, the young couple glowed with promise at "the bodyguard" movie premiere. the song "i will always love you" sent whitney houston, already a superstar, into the stratosphere. ♪ "the bodyguard" soundtrack topped every chart and would go on to become an international phenomenon selling over 45 million albums and winning nearly every award. >> the winner is -- >> whitney. >> whitney. >> whitney houston. order to, you know, get the monkey off my back. >> reporter: are you clean? >> i'm clean from narcotics, yes. i haven't done narcotics in 10, 12 years. alcohol has been a problem. i go back often to reboot, but [ bleep ], that's life. everybody drinks. sometimes i drink. >> what is the one thing that is said about you that is not true that just you want to put an end to? >> a woman beater, they've said that, you know, i've harmed whitney, that i was, you know, violent towards her. >> your ex said you spit on her. >> mm, that never happened. >> he spit on me. and my daughter was coming down the stairs and she saw that. that was pretty intense. >> it was just lies. i've never been a violent man towards a woman ever. >> but you did admit in the book that you did strike her once. >> yes, i did. me at the time trying to maintain a sobriety, the person that you're in a relationship is not goin' along with it. it was rough. >> reporter: according to this

something, and i wasn't allowed to be there for my child. >> reporter: after whitney's death, father and daughter grew further apart. when bobby tied the knot with longtime friend alicia etheredge in june 2012, bobbi kristina was noticeably absent. she also became distant from other family members. >> if anything, it was very difficult to get in touch with her. facebook, twitter, instagram. i tried to contact her every possible way. >> reporter: bobbi kristina struggled to find her way. she was treated for stress and anxiety. reports of alleged drug use surfaced. her siblings feared she was lost and vulnerable. you don't seem too enthused. what's the matter? >> yes, i am very happy. >> only people that failed her were the houstons because those are the people that was supposed to make sure she was okay. >> reporter: bobby junior says his sister's appearance on "the houstons'" reality show so soon after her mother's death further exploited her pain. >> why can't nick go?

>> you guys are so on each other. >> like even pat houston doing that tv show, and like knowing my sister's not in the right correct mind state, does anybody realize that's malicious? she was being manipulated. >> reporter: pat houston, whitney's manager and sister-in-law, declined to comment. but the brown family believed bobbi kristina was being manipulated by another person, nick gordon. >> never really knew nick. i met him twice. neither times did i get a good feeling about him. >> reporter: gordon was rumored to be whitney's adopted son. bobbi kristina called him "her brother." after whitney's death, the couple claimed to be much more. >> i'm married, and we're fine. we're really, really very happy. he is my backbone. >> reporter: there have been no legal documents to prove that the couple ever married. but the other man in her life, her father, says bobbi kristina

reached out to him in 2014 for an emotional reunion on father's day. >> you said that you -- you hadn't seen each other in a while because you were a bit estranged. and that you all hugged each other when you saw each other in the restaurant and that you -- it was kind of like old times. >> that was a special day. >> hi. >> you guys look so happy. i love the daddy and me moment, you know. it's a beautiful thing. >> thank you. >> reporter: bobby says things were going so well that bobbi kristina decided to move to los angeles to be closer to him, but that move would never happen. >> a 21-year-old female in the bathtub face down. pd is en route. >> reporter: on january 31st, 2015, just two days, he says, before his daughter was to head to l.a., she was found lifeless in a bathtub at her georgia home. >> she was found unresponsive. >> she was rushed to the hospital yesterday. >> painfully reminiscent of her mother's death. >> reporter: reports label bobbi kristina's accident a mystery, but bobby had his suspicions.
