>> love you, too. >> this is where my house used to be. this was 116 eustice street where i grew up. >> reporter: while some faces are the same -- he's finding you can't go home again, if home's not there. >> the tree's gone now, where i used to climb all the time. >> reporter: the climbing tree is gone, and the boy grew into a man. he's now telling his story about the highs of celebrity, the depths of great loss, and every little step along the way. boston 1982, and bobby brown and his friends team up for talent night at the strand theater. the boys come in second, but won something even better -- the attention of local music producer maurice starr. he helps polish their moves, record an album in this humble studio, and get a record deal. new edition was born. we went back to the stage where

up on stage. >> ladies and gentlemen, new edition! >> reporter: with synchronized steps and bubble gumcharm, they danced their way to hit after hit. ♪ cool it now ♪ you got to cool it now ooh watch out ♪ >> reporter: meanwhile, 200 miles away in new jersey, another teenager is about to have her life changed by music as well. a former covergirl named whitney houston has just signed her first major record deal with clive davis' arista records. ♪ i'm savin' all my love -- >> reporter: her 1985 debut album, "whitney," would win the young talent her first grammy. ♪ that same year was less of a celebration for bobby brown. his need to be in the center spotlight and ongoing tensions with the other members of new edition could no longer be ignored. were you voted out?

or did you leave on your own? >> i was voted out of the group because i would do the opposite, you know, of what they told new edition to do. i was my own man at a young age. and i just wanted what i wanted. i was still ready to do what i wanted to do. and the music that i wanted to do. >> reporter: a struggling bobby moves to l.a. and finds modest success as a solo artist. the now young father admits to selling drugs to get by. but when he is matched up with rising music producers l.a. reid and babyface, he finally finds his sound, and his voice. >> bobby decides he's going to do a song, you know, that really speaks to how he feels about what people say about him. when you see the video and you see him performing, you say, "that's a star, and that's a hit single." ♪ everybody's talkin' all this stuff about me why don't they just let me live ♪

♪ tell me why ♪ i don't need permission make my own decisions that's my prerogative ♪ ♪ it's my prerogative >> i want it to be raw. i want it to -- i wanna be in their face and i want people to, you know, buy this record because what, because of the energy in the performance. >> reporter: and the cage was new edition? >> the cage was new edition, the cage was all the anger i had built up inside of me, just having to sell drugs, i had children at this time. so it was like, "i gotta -- i gotta get out there and i gotta be successful because i gotta feed them. i gotta feed my kids." >> reporter: "my prerogative," along with "don't be cruel" and "every little step" helped his album go seven times platinum. >> bobby brown. >> bobby brown. >> bobby brown. >> reporter: he was the "it" guy of 1989, known for his high-energy dancing and living. sometimes offstage excess showed up onstage, as seen at the

1989 mtv video awards. abc's chris connelly was there. >> at some point during this performance, a vial comes out of hi clothes, and while he's dancing, he picks up the vial and keeps going. and from that moment on, you sort of thought, i wonder what's going on with bobby brown. >> reporter: what was going on? a lot of indulging in drugs, and women, he says, among them -- janet jackson and madonna. but there was one story i really couldn't ignore. i can't even believe it when i ask you this, but i have to. >> what -- >> reporter: you -- you had sex with a ghost? >> a ghost. yeah, yeah. >> reporter: come on, man. tell me about it. >> i moved into this house, i bought this mansion in georgia. so this was a really, really spooky place. but yes, one time -- i woke up, and yeah, a ghost. i was being mounted by a ghost. i wasn't high. >> reporter: that was my next question. >> i wasn't high. >> reporter: that was my next question. were you trippin'? >> i was not trippin'. >> reporter: you've had quite a life. >> i've had some crazy situations. [ laughter ] >> reporter: one real girl would turn his head, by literally bumping into it. it was whitney houston, as she stood behind him at the 1989 soul train awards. >> she was bumpin' into me at soul train. and i was like -- "you keep bumpin' into me." and i kept doing that. and i did it like two or three times. and she kept bumpin' me. and i asked her why. and she was like, "'cause i want to." and that attitude, that whole thing right there -- that's where it started. >> reporter: and so it began. >> yeah. that's the way it all began. ♪ i wanna dance with somebody >> reporter: by this time, whitney houston was the reigning pop princess girl next door. and he was the bad boy of r&b. a seemingly unlikely match. >> the thing that we have to remind ourselves, is that there

judgment. >> now you broke tradition a little bit and saw her before the wedding. >> uh-huh. well, that was the first time i had actually saw her do drugs. >> cocaine. >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: bobby says in his book, he found his bride-to-be, quote, "hunched over a bureau snorting a line of coke." he says she offered him a hit, but he didn't indulge at that moment. what went through your mind when you saw that? >> she wasn't that. you know what i'm saying? the drugs wasn't her. she did drugs, but drugs didn't do her. she knew how to handle herself. it only made me, you know, love and wanna protect her more. >> people said to me the one thing that they heard over and over again, that you were the one that led whitney to heavy drug use, that you were the one. >> it wasn't me that started her.

i take my part, and i take it hard for me even being a part of it, but we all have our own minds, and some of us are stronger than others. >> reporter: that was their lives in private. in public, the young couple glowed with promise at "the bodyguard" movie premiere. the song "i will always love you" sent whitney houston, already a superstar, into the stratosphere. ♪ "the bodyguard" soundtrack topped every chart and would go on to become an international phenomenon selling over 45 million albums and winning nearly every award. >> the winner is -- >> whitney. >> whitney. >> whitney houston. >> reporter: yet, she often seemed to be dimming her star for him. >> honey, this one is for you, the original r&b king. i love you! >> singer bobby brown was arrested again -- >> after his dui conviction. >> i'm going to give you some time. >> reporter: at that time the only headlines bobby was grabbing were for less than stellar behavior. his multiple arrests ranging from marijuana possession to drunk driving and various parole violations solidify his bad boy image. >> bobby brown. >> reporter: but whitney stands by her man. >> happy to have your husband back, ma'am? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: they recorded their first duet. ♪ we have something in common yes we do yes we do ♪ ♪ yes we do >> reporter: sadly, they also share escalating drug use. bobby says they would lock themselves in one wing of the house getting high while daughter bobbi kristina was cared for by nannies. you all were in the throes of drug use. did you ever do it in front of

her? >> no, never. never. >> but she probably had to have known. >> never. i always made it a point to not let her see me or my wife in that type of situation. i mean it's hard when you're doing it every day, you know. it's really hard. >> reporter: the world was beginning to take notice. >> all right, all right, all right. >> i had whitney and bobby in front of me outside of the "vanity fair" party one year, and she'd speak in this really staccato way, and they'd like be looking around like this and she'd say kind of off-the-wall stuff like, we're in it to win it. >> at a certain point when you're using drugs, you don't know that the outside people that are seeing you, i mean -- >> people remember vividly, my colleague and friend, diane sawyer, crack is whack. >> wow. >> crack is whack. >> first of all, let's get one thing straight. crack is cheap.

>> reporter: judgment might come into question when i think of "being bobby brown." >> uh-huh. >> your little girl was about 11. that was a lot -- >> for her to deal with. >> reporter: yes. >> yes. there was so many things that i don't know that were so bad. >> reporter: you said that you felt that as parents you and whitney failed bobbi kris. >> yeah. we should have been better. we could have been better. at such a young age for us both to have any and everything that we wanted was a blessing and a curse. >> reporter: a curse, because money for drugs was never a problem for the couple. in his book, bobby brown admits to abusing cocaine, marijuana and heroin, in addition to alcohol. when was the drug use at its height with you and whitney? >> the last few years of our marriage, it was terrible. both of us, you know, trying to be clean, or one of us trying to be clean, and the other one don't wanna be clean. it's a big struggle. >> reporter: bobby credits his time behind bars with helping him with his sobriety. >> i had to be put in jail in

order to, you know, get the monkey off my back. >> reporter: are you clean? >> i'm clean from narcotics, yes. i haven't done narcotics in 10, 12 years. alcohol has been a problem. i go back often to reboot, but [ bleep ], that's life. everybody drinks. sometimes i drink. >> what is the one thing that is said about you that is not true that just you want to put an end to? >> a woman beater, they've said that, you know, i've harmed whitney, that i was, you know, violent towards her. >> your ex said you spit on her. >> mm, that never happened. >> he spit on me. and my daughter was coming down the stairs and she saw that. that was pretty intense. >> it was just lies. i've never been a violent man towards a woman ever. >> but you did admit in the book that you did strike her once. >> yes, i did. me at the time trying to maintain a sobriety, the person that you're in a relationship is not goin' along with it. it was rough. >> reporter: according to this

2003 incident report, police found a bruise on whitney houston's cheek and a cut lip, but she refused to press charges, and the next day whitney was singing -- ♪ a natural woman >> reporter: -- and standing by bobby's side. >> we're still together. >> reporter: but it wouldn't last long. he says whitney just wouldn't stop using, and that in 2006, that's what ultimately led to the end of their 14 years of marriage. >> she just wasn't ready to go that direction. >> bobby. >> reporter: bobby says he did not get any money in the divorce. and people always come back to money with you and saying that you wanted whitney's money. >> i've been rich since i was 17. i came into the marriage with money, left the marriage with nothing. ♪ and i am not afraid to try it on my own ♪ >> reporter: meanwhile, whitney was trying life on her own and in search of a comeback.

♪ and when she appeared on "good morning america" in 2009, she was excited. it was her first televised performance in seven years. what has it meant for you to be back here on stage? >> i'm overwhelmed. the love, the support, your prayers mean so much to me. >> reporter: a now grown-up bobbi kristina would make a rare public appearance singing with her mother. ♪ clap your hands >> reporter: but the celebration would not last. it's grammy weekend 2012, and right from the onset, there are signs of trouble. whitney houston barges into the middle of a tv interview with her mentor, clive davis. >> come say hi to your godfather. >> reporter: video taken later that night shows whitney leaving a club looking distressed and exhausted. she had just appeared on stage with singer kelly price. ♪

>> reporter: we now know this is whitney houston's final performance, "jesus loves me." >> breaking news -- >> the death of singing star -- >> whitney houston. >> reporter: saturday afternoon, february 11th, 2012. whitney houston is discovered partially submerged in the bathtub of her los angeles hotel room. according to the autopsy report, cocaine use contributed to whitney's accidental drowning. that night bobby brown is on tour with a reunited new edition in mississippi. he breaks down on stage. >> all: bobby, bobby, bobby. >> i love you, whitney. ♪ >> reporter: february 18th, 2012, family and friends gather to say good-bye to whitney houston. missing from the pews, the brown family. the funeral for whitney, you walking out. >> uh-huh. >> can you explain why you did that? >> well, basically, me and my kids were being disrespected by the security that was there. >> reporter: ongoing tension between the brown and houston families spilled over outside when they ran into bobbi kristina. >> the police said, "if you go near her, we're gonna have to arrest you." "what? you're gonna arrest me for trying to console my sister?" >> i'm the father of my daughter, who's going through

something, and i wasn't allowed to be there for my child. >> reporter: after whitney's death, father and daughter grew further apart. when bobby tied the knot with longtime friend alicia etheredge in june 2012, bobbi kristina was noticeably absent. she also became distant from other family members. >> if anything, it was very difficult to get in touch with her. facebook, twitter, instagram. i tried to contact her every possible way. >> reporter: bobbi kristina struggled to find her way. she was treated for stress and anxiety. reports of alleged drug use surfaced. her siblings feared she was lost and vulnerable. you don't seem too enthused. what's the matter? >> yes, i am very happy. >> only people that failed her were the houstons because those are the people that was supposed to make sure she was okay. >> reporter: bobby junior says his sister's appearance on "the houstons'" reality show so soon after her mother's death further exploited her pain. >> why can't nick go?

>> you guys are so on each other. >> like even pat houston doing that tv show, and like knowing my sister's not in the right correct mind state, does anybody realize that's malicious? she was being manipulated. >> reporter: pat houston, whitney's manager and sister-in-law, declined to comment. but the brown family believed bobbi kristina was being manipulated by another person, nick gordon. >> never really knew nick. i met him twice. neither times did i get a good feeling about him. >> reporter: gordon was rumored to be whitney's adopted son. bobbi kristina called him "her brother." after whitney's death, the couple claimed to be much more. >> i'm married, and we're fine. we're really, really very happy. he is my backbone. >> reporter: there have been no legal documents to prove that the couple ever married. but the other man in her life, her father, says bobbi kristina

reached out to him in 2014 for an emotional reunion on father's day. >> you said that you -- you hadn't seen each other in a while because you were a bit estranged. and that you all hugged each other when you saw each other in the restaurant and that you -- it was kind of like old times. >> that was a special day. >> hi. >> you guys look so happy. i love the daddy and me moment, you know. it's a beautiful thing. >> thank you. >> reporter: bobby says things were going so well that bobbi kristina decided to move to los angeles to be closer to him, but that move would never happen. >> a 21-year-old female in the bathtub face down. pd is en route. >> reporter: on january 31st, 2015, just two days, he says, before his daughter was to head to l.a., she was found lifeless in a bathtub at her georgia home. >> she was found unresponsive. >> she was rushed to the hospital yesterday. >> painfully reminiscent of her mother's death. >> reporter: reports label bobbi kristina's accident a mystery, but bobby had his suspicions.

>> it was not a mystery to me. i know exactly what happened to my daughter. the same thing that happened to my daughter is what happened to whitney. there's only one person that was around both occasions. >> you won't say his name. nick gordon is who you're referring to. >> i won't say his name. >> reporter: for six months, while bobbi kristina lay in a coma, reports surfaced of the browns and the houstons fighting over her care and control of her financial estate. when bobby spoke at a concert saying her condition had improved -- >> my baby's awake. >> reporter: -- his motives were questioned. you announced at the concert, "my baby girl is awake." was she? >> she was definitely following me when i walked around the room, when i talked to her. for me, to me that's awake and getting better to me.

>> reporter: sadly, bobbi kristina passed away on july 26th, 2015. >> the last thing i told her, i just said, "let go." i said, "it's okay. you can go with your mom. daddy will be all right." >> "you can rest now." >> "i love you. you can rest." the hardest thing i had to do in my life was tell my daughter to let go. i don't wish that on my worst enemy. that is the worst pain in the world. >> reporter: her official cause of death was lobar pneumonia due to drowning and a toxic cocktail of drugs in her system. she was buried alongside her mother. >> i just didn't feel like she was there anymore. just felt like someone was -- something, something was always

in the way like pulling her away. >> i hate to say it but two days, if i had those two days back, i'd have went and got her instead of waiting for her to come to me. i would've went and got her if i knew. >> what two days are you referring to? >> the two days before what happened to my daughter. she was to come out here to los angeles with me. if i could get those two days back, my daughter would be here. all i want is those two days back.

give bobby as he continues to battle his self-admitted problem with alcohol. and how do you help him with his sobriety? >> when you're living with somebody who has fought so many addictions and has come so far and then you see there is still something holding them back, and there is still something weighing them down, and there is still something that is not allowing them to be their best, you just want to help them and support them any way you can. so i'm learning, obviously, with this process how to be supportive, how not to enable in any possible way but -- >> don't judge. >> yeah, the judging is definitely a new way for me. so it's like, "don't you just get that you don't do that?" it's not that easy. it's a disease, and you have to learn how to handle that. >> reporter: their partnership in marriage extends to business as alicia has been bobby's manager since 2008. so give me the five-year plan for bobby brown. >> bobby really wants to do a lot more acting, which, i mean,

he's great at, and i don't see why he hasn't. obviously, he's had some ups and downs that he needed to get out of the way, but he still has i think an album or two left in him. >> i'm not doin' two. i'm probably gonna do one more album. >> he loves music so much, and there is some great producers around that we have worked with prior and new ones that are really happy that he's working on his sobriety, but also his fitness and just bein' in that frame where he could write good music. >> as a manager and as his wife, are there ever any conflicts between business, family, you know, wearing the two hats? >> not -- yes, there is always conflict at times that arises, and i think it's just when the two overlap. >> i know my industry. i know what i do, you know, as far as entertainment is concerned, but to be told by -- [ laughter ] >> he's like, "shut up." >> -- this one over here how to perform or what songs to do on
