neighbor's house with the child. >> she had a pretty bad cut. blood protruding down her face. >> i seen her today and she ran up to me and she hugged my thigh and she gave me a high advertisement josé rivera talking about the little girl he knows. he was a visitor when he heard the mother screaming at the driver of a silver mazda who was driving out of the home's drive way. >> she was trying to get the ma man to stop he kept turning trying to maneuver around her and stuff and she ended up -- he ended up hitting her. >> reporter: the baby. >> no -- he hit the mom, the baby -- i'm assuming was that under the car. >> reporter: the driver of the mazda fled. the license plate number was reported and police stopped the car six to 7 miles away taking that driver into custody. this afternoon an aunt of the little girl who visited the little girl at the hospital gave this update. >> right now she's asleep.

she's doing really, really g like i said said there's no broken bones or anything. >> fracture. >> a fracture in the back of her skull so they're watching that and everything. >> reporter: well, live now back at the house. unknown elements here that's for sure, things we just don't quite understand yet including what triggered the actual incident. mr. rivera says he was told someone ode owed someone a hundred dollars. the police investigation continues. so far no one has been charged. live in newport, john rawlins channel6 "action rawlins channel6 "action news." >> police on the scene of a homicide investigation in darby borough. they were called to a home on the 100 block of spring valley road after someone heard gunshots this morning. a woman in her 20's was found shot to death inside. right now police are questioning a person of interest. they still do not know what led up to the shooting. police are holding a news conference at 5 o'clock tonight. we'll have more details as they are released.

>> a man remains in custody for allegedly shooting at a woman's car last night in bucks county. police say 32-year-old brandon grosso reached out the window of his car and fired a shot into the other vehicle in the richland crossings shopping center. the driver and passenger, a mother and son, were not hurt h but they spoke to "action news"'s gray hall about the scary encounter. gray will have their story coming up at 5 o'clock. >> talking temperatures this afternoon. we hit 90 degrees again today. making this our first heat wave of the season. >> uh-huh. the action cam was in roxborough section of philadelphia as anyone outside don't looking for the shade and with the hot weather comes a chance for thunderstorms. >> meteorologist adam joseph is at the big board with the latest from accuweather. i was going for a run today adam but it's just too hot. >> no way that man ever is going to run. [laughter] >> as we take a look, yes, there was a heat wave. the last three days 91 on

wednesday, 93 yesterday, today matching yesterday's temperature of 93 degrees. 50 to 20 degrees above average for this time of year and many of us saying let me just get hit by a quick little downpour as we get some cooling effect from it and also the gardens and the lawns need some water and you can see a cluster here just to the west of philadelphia and to the south and east as well, so parts of the region especially south of the city getting walked right now by some heavy rainfall. in fact, this area that is mainly through maryland and now just skirting on the border of southern chester county as well as lancaster county a lot of lightning with this moving to the southeast at 40 miles an hour, wind gusts near 50 miles an hour skirting past oxford and we'll watch this especially for the date of delaware over the next hour or so and also parts of camden and gloucester county also getting quick little downpours and thunderstorms popping up. but the severe storms they're going to be very isolated across the region this evening but any of the storms could could and taken very strong winds and a little bit of hail

there's a small memorial on the concrete barricade where that car came to rest yesterday and people are writing on it rest in peace alyssa. richard rojas appeared in court on friday just about 24 hours after police say he deliberately pulled a u-turn in times square and started plowing down pedestrians. >> he waited for those cars to pass. and he accelerated striking down these pedestrians. that goes to a state of mind and his motivation. >> reporter: surveillance video now piecing together a time line. investigators say rojas left his house at 10:30 and drove straight to times square. >> we got a car running people over. >> reporter: 18-year-old alyssa elman and her sister. alyssa did not survive her sister in the hospital with a collapsed lung. >> the screaming and hearing the -- the engine revving and it was just all so quick because before the screams, the revving and then the impact.

>> reporter: witnesses describing him as crazed. he told police he smoked marijuana laced with pcp. extra concrete barricades are now in place on several blocks where police say rojas kept accelerating until he crashed. >> he actually goes underneath the scaffold, parts of his car, the side view mirror, license plate are falling off as he's striking these pedestrians. people are being dragged. they're on top of the car. >> reporter: seven victims are still in the hospital. the next step now for police, they're going to search the home of richard rojas try to find any information as to why he might have done this. in new york's times square, emily rau channel6 "action news." >> emily thank you. we're getting a look at the cage that police say they found a toddler locked in home alone in north manheim township schuylkill county. he was one of three children left unattended their mother in the hospital, their father on watch is now behind bars.

but the family is defending this contraption saying it is not a cage. >> we did not have the intentions of locking our children inside of a cage. >> reporter: but that's exactly what officials call it yesterday when they found tiffany george's three children home a on. >> there was a two month old child who was locked in a homemade cage. it was kind of fashioned out of plywood and wooden lattice, had a door on it with a barrel bolt so you could lock the door from the outside. but still george insists this is not a cage. >> it's a play pen. it's a crib. it's not a cage. >> reporter: meant to keep their toddler from climbing out. >> the whole purpose of it so that he couldn't get out and hurt himself. >> reporter: police found a one-year-old in a play pen and a one day mold a baby seat unstrapped. officials say they were there alone and unattended for at least 40 minutes. >> it's not easy to look at. you have to feel for these

kids. >> reporter: george admits she has a criminal past does not have custody of her sons and has had some run ins with children and youth services but she claims they have seen the pen. >> they're the ones that asked us to modify it so then we built this. this lid was not on it. this lid comes off. >> reporter: when the police made the discovery george was hospitalized from complications from childbirth. she said she believed her boyfriend cecil kutz and her children were following her in the ambulance to the hospital. >> i think that's what people should be more focused on and not so much this cage thing because i am very upset that he left my children at home alone while i was in the hospital. >> reporter: so, george says her children are now in foster care. it's not yet clear whether she will face any charges. in the meantime kutz is being held on $250,000 cash bail. sharrie. >> okay, alicia. president trump is headed overseas without naming a new fbi director. he had said he was "very close to replacing james comey" but

trump left today without any comment on that matter. the president and first lady boarded air force one and departed for the middle east and europe. this is the first international trip of his presidency. he's on an eight day five country trip with his first stop scheduled in saudia arabia. he's hoping to reset america's relationship with friend and foe alike setting the stage for middle east peace and ending islamic terrorism. >> wikileaks founder julian assange said he would be happy to talk with the u.s. department of justice despite its threats against him. he made that statement after sweden's top prosecutor dropped his rape investigation. but he is still hiding at ecuador's london embassy to prevent authorities from turning him over to the u.s. american officials may want to extradite him on possible espionage charges for preleasing sensitive documents. british police also plan to arrest him if he leaves the ecuadorian embassy. >> tonight at 11:00 an "action news" investigation looks into

motorcycle accident off to the side here by columbus boulevard washington avenue and as a result, a southbound parking lot the whole way from cottman on down to this point at columbus boulevard. you are barely moving in that multi mile stretch. northbound also all locked up from broad street through this point on up toward allegheny avenue. it's been a mess of an afternoon already here on 95 in this area. of course that means things are going to be extra jammed on the vine street expressway eastbound side off the schuylkill out 295 on the westbound side there's a broken down vehicle here at the end of the ben franklin bridge. ben franklin parkway on-ramp. elsewhere on 95 here in delaware county remnants of a crash in the northbound lanes approaching highland avenue. it takes out the center lanes so coming north of the state line traffic is all messed up at this hour and of course on the schuylkill expressway there had to be a crash as well. it was westbound near 30th street station now cleared out of the way. eastbound speeds also extra slow because of course the kelly drive remains loads for the stotesbury regatta and a

>> ♪ >> in new orleans crews spent the day taking down a statue of confederate general robert e. lee. it's the fourth and final confederate related statue in the city to be taken down t the others were removed in the middle of the night but the city decided to take down lee during the day. it was extra security on hand because the city anticipated several protests. >> a bucks county school is trying to decide what to do with a very big donation. burlington stores presented truman high school in levittown with a $10,000 check this morning. principal davis accepted the check during a school assembly s the principal is considering using the some and to buy furniture to make it easier for students to work on projects together. well, hundreds of doctors and researchers are one step closer to having their dreams come true. 578 students proudly walked across the stage to receive their diplomas from drexel university's college of medicine this morning. after years of hard work, the

group earned medical degrees master's and ph.d.'s. friends and family were also at the kimmel center to help celebrate the big moment. >> well, at this very hour, this man is officially becoming dr. irwin medway. the philadelphia veteran is one of villanova university's longest running students and today he is being realizing his dream of becoming a college graduate as you can see the commencement ceremony is under way at this very moment and medway will be receiving a doctor of humanities degree. >> the joy of getting old is you live history and you made history. and that's what i did. >> and for 24 years, irwin medway lovingly called irv has been working towards this degree. if you're wonder wag drivers him. >> i guess the answer is because i can. there literally will be a time when i will not be able to do what i'm doing. >> reporter: at 93 years old

irv is living history. >> i survived world war ii. i have a purple heart. it's sitting right here. i have a bronze star. >> reporter: and he's happy to tell you his story, his way. >> something i learned by getting older is that i have become very bold so i'm not afraid of opening my mouth. >> reporter: and he'd share his unedited wisdom with any student willing to learn. >> so, i'm not a philosopher. i'm teaching and i'm saying things that maybe i shouldn't say. >> reporter: to irv's teachers he's a priceless resource. >> it's such a great value for me as a teacher to have someone of the greatest generation in a classroom with young people 18, 19, were twenty, 21 years old. >> reporter: in fact irv sat in classes with other students the same age as his own grandchildren. he has seven and one great grandchild and there's one rule. >> so, all we believe in is education.

double scan there was one thunderstorm that rolled through parts of gloucester camden county, a second one behind it although that is starting to weaken but following its heels moving to the east at 20 miles an hour there you can see as it moves to the east near 206. with the initial storm moving to the east in parts of burlington county, washington at 4:33, speed well 4:49. jenkins 4:42. you'll get a quick little soaking and even a rumble or two of thunder. there's another nasty thunderstorm with a lot of lightning, 52 lightning strikes in 15 minutes that went right over old barney in the northern tip of long beach island and a little bit of hail with that as well where you see the purples on the radar but now that storm is exiting the coastline. there will be more that will be popping up as we go through the evening hours here. 89 allentown, 90 reading, near 90 in wilmington, 91 in millville.

a sea breeze at the shore so temperatures there only in the 70's this afternoon. were we're just over the halfway point here and at the beginning of the week we were running two and a half degrees below normal with in long stretch of really cool weather. but this has been such an exceptionally warm middle part of the week but now we are close to average for the month so far but those numbers are going to start to back off as we go into the weekend and next week. satellite and radar, there's the front and you can seal the storms kind of popping. they'll be isolated here this evening so not everyone getting hit. the best areas would be philadelphia to the south here through that 6:30 hour, through 6:30 and then through around 9 o'clock, they'll still be around but quickly fading offer the radar scope as we get into 10, 11 o'clock tonight and that's when temperatures are really going to drop off into the 60's by tomorrow morning, seven, a.m. 9:00 a.m. with that northerly wind drying us out. highs tomorrow only 70

them on social media by mocking their private struggle to have a baby when they called for help. >> we begin with a change of heart for one of philadelphia it's best known musicians. on wednesday the popular drummer for the roots canceled his performance at pennsbury high school's prom just days before the big dance. but that all changed this morning thanks in part tour a big social media push from the students. "action news" reporter bob brooks live outside the school in fairless hills to explain. bob. >> reporter: sharrie first i want to set the record straight. questlove is 100 percent performing here for the pennsbury high school senior prom. he might even have a co-performer with him. i'm going to talk more about that in just a second but first i want to step off here and show everyone how they've amazingly been able to reshape their school. the theme for this year's prom is yo' philly so it's all philadelphia themed right now. you're looking at a section that's close to what should be

the philadelphia flower show. these kids and community should be so proud of the work they've been able to do. they do something that's considered the best in the country t that's prom. in fact they proudly titled their prom here the best prom in america. it's always held here at the school and this year's theme is yo' philly. >> we have the magic gardens, we have philly sports, we have food entertainment. >> we've actually been working on this since last spring when we were juniors. we met every week. >> reporter: part of the reason the students here earned that title their knack for booking big time entertainment. this year's act philadelphia native amir thompson also known as questlove he's also the drummer for the roots. well, it almost didn't happen. >> we thought we had everything nailed down and we received an e-mail yesterday that they were pulling out. >> it was tough to know that the prom we worked so hard at was kind of falling apart a little bit. >> reporter: today around 10 o'clock the school district sent us a letter citing

technology concerns from the questlove team as the reason why so this morning i reached out to questlove via twitter with this message at questlove heard you weren't going to be at pennsbury high school prom. what happened. shortly after he sent out a series of tweets saying he had some things of a unavoidable matter but then recommitted. he said it came down to a scheduling conflict then reaffirmed his position writing "i'mi'm not even going o charge them. i'm going prom, case closed. >> i feel like he's going to be greeted extremely warmly. we'll send him the pennsbury love. i think he's going to send us the philly love and we'll -- and then we'll party from there. >> reporter: and we think they will. what you're looking at right there is a beautiful chandelier set to mimic the chandelier at the philadelphia flower show. questlove might have a co-performer with him. when all of this cancellation

happened the school reached out to dj pauly d, the famous dj who is also on the reality show the jersey shore. he still might come plane alongside questlove so those are still details reporting live at pennsbury high school bob brooks channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> from 1dj to maybe two and questlove in the building. sounds like a great prom. bob, thank you. students at martin luther king high school in the city's germantown section got out of school early today. all because of a smoke bomb. the device was set off in the auditorium sometime this morning forcing officials to dismiss school around noon. the smoke bomb dismissal was unrelated to a small construction fire that happened on the roof earlier in the day. no one was hurt. >> police in new castle county investigating a two car accident that left one person dead t the crash happened along the 2700 block of frazier road in newark around 11:30 last night. investigators say a saturn

driven by a 24-year-old man and a hyundai driven by an 18-year-old girl collided. a 69-year-old woman in the saturn was killed. the four teens in the other car and the driver of that saturn were hurt but all are expected to be okay. meantime the crash is still under investigation. an employee at a day care and preschool in radnor township arrested for a bomb threat that happened back in february. police say alexis steed works at the new gulf children's center. the building was evacuated on february 15. radnor k through nine -- radnor k-9 patrol did a search but found nothing. months later police say their investigation led them to steed. there's also a warrant for a second female employee who detectives say was also involved. >> a multi-million dollar project at the jersey shore is finished ahead of schedule. avalon just completed one of its largest beach replenishment projects ever. crews placed nearly 1 million cubic yards of sand in the town's north end.

in a special effort to save the frogs. the kids met with a local environmental firm to develop a strategy before starting their restoration project. >> well, students in philadelphia spent time with a professional football player today but this was more about academics, not sports. the former penn state football player and offensive lineman for the baltimore ravens encouraged the students to take math and science seriously. he's studying for his ph.d. in applied mathematics at mit its all part of stem behind sports day the goal is to show students the connection between academics and athletics. >> all right. good for him. >> uh-huh. >> in the meantime let's get an update on the commute home on a friday afternoon. >> let's see if there's anything good here. matt standing by with the update for us. >> not a whole lot. but it's nice of to ask. yeah, we've got some big delays resulting stemming you might say from a crash here

along the roosevelt boulevard extension northbound side approaching wissahickon was blocking the left lane but the crash just cleared out of the way so still delayed coming off of 76 but at least that accident there is now gone. 76 itself, the schuylkill extra crowded in both directions this afternoon. just 11 miles per hour there on the eastbound side. doesn't help us out that a chunk of the kelly drive remains closed for the stotesbury regatta this weekend. if you want to stay on the other side of the river on the mlk drive, that, too, is going to be very busy but is an option or think outside the box a little bit maybe ridge avenue or lancaster avenue as some other alternates. it's been a mess of an afternoon along 95. we had a southbound motorcycle accident close to penn's landing columbus boulevard. it's cleared out since last we spoke but the delays certainly have not. this is the scene by allegheny avenue. an hour and five minutes on the southbound travel time. that's more than four times what that travel time should be. still a parking lot from cottman on down to penn's

looking pretty good. back bays here of atlantic city. the boats, the yachts, whatever you want to call them they are ready for memorial day weekend. storm tracks six life double scan we're dealing with a few thunderstorms south of wilmington also long beach island getting clipped by some thunderstorms as well. as we take a look at this loved it's a pretty nasty line developing from salem down to middletown into maryland here. you can see those towns and times port penn 4:55, odessa 4:56. townsend five:05. moving to the south and east at 4 miles per hour. some wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour but not on the severe side at this point for delaware. this nasty storm surf city to brighton beach along bong leach boulevard eight lightning strikes with this but i wouldn't be surprised if there's a little bit of hail coming out of this storm as well where you see the bright pinks on the radar but that

will soon be off along beach island as well. these storms are kind of hit or miss especially south of philadelphia here this evening. that's where the indices are in the high to upper 90's. cooler up towards the lehigh valley, 89 right now is the heat index. satellite and radar, there's a cold front coming from the north and west and that's what's kind of popping some of these scattered storms here and that will continue over the next several hours as the front sinks to the south and high pressure comes in from behind it from the north but temperatures right now 93 philadelphia it's the hottest spot in the midatlantic, just shy of 90 in new york city, same for washington but you can see the 50's in syracuse, binghamton right now so that cooler air is nearby. so for tonight though scattered thunderstorms early otherwise it turns breezy and cooler quiet for the rest of the overnight 55 to 61. future tracker showing at 8 o'clock tonight there you can see those hit or miss downpours and storms again mainly south of philadelphia and they all but stayed off

friday night the big story on "action news" is that shooting that landed one man behind bars. >> "action news" reporter gray hall is live in quakertown tonight where he spoke to the victims earlier today. gray. >> reporter: rick and monica, it was a violent scene that played out in this parking lot behind me. the victims tell me they are still traumatized by all of this but they are relieved that police made an arrest. >> i called 911 right away. turned around and i was like oh, he shot you. dialed 911 and i said i've just been shot. >> reporter: they both could have been killed. police say this man brandon grosso had a shotgun and fired shots at the family's car. >> police did tell me that 1 inch lower or me moving a little bit differently in the angle of my car that i wouldn't be here. >> reporter: police say grosso was first involved in an incident at the yum yum bake shop along broad street in quakertown. investigators would not go into detail but the lavin family said grosso was spotted in the area with a gun and people called 911. they encounter
