on "action news" is that shooting that landed one man behind bars. >> "action news" reporter gray hall is live in quakertown tonight where he spoke to the victims earlier today. gray. >> reporter: rick and monica, it was a violent scene that played out in this parking lot behind me. the victims tell me they are still traumatized by all of this but they are relieved that police made an arrest. >> i called 911 right away. turned around and i was like oh, he shot you. dialed 911 and i said i've just been shot. >> reporter: they both could have been killed. police say this man brandon grosso had a shotgun and fired shots at the family's car. >> police did tell me that 1 inch lower or me moving a little bit differently in the angle of my car that i wouldn't be here. >> reporter: police say grosso was first involved in an incident at the yum yum bake shop along broad street in quakertown. investigators would not go into detail but the lavin family said grosso was spotted in the area with a gun and people called 911. they encountered him at this

wal-mart parking lot not far from. >> i thought he threw a rock at my car and then i asked my son if we were hit and he said, yes, and my back window was all shattered. >> reporter: barb says grosso was driving aggressively and tried to pass her. she said she was afraid and sped up. instead of just driving off he followed her and fired that shot from inside his car shattering their window. she says it all happened so quickly, she had just dropped off her daughter at work her son was in the passenger seat and within seconds they were being fired at. >> i'm just glad someone up there was watching over me 'cause clearly they were from the angle that bullet shot was. >> reporter: hours after the shooting police were able to track down grosso and take him into custody without incident. >> after i found out he was cautery leaf there. i don't have to be paranoid anymore. >> whatever was wrong with him i hope he gets the help.

>> reporter: so back out live we can tell that you police say there is video of this incident. however, they're not releasing it because this case is still under investigation. that suspect tonight locked up in a bucks county jail. jail has been set at 150 thousand dollars. live in quakertown, gray hall channel6 "action news." rick. >> gray, thank you. now to the delaware valley's first heat wave of the year. it is official. we've topped 90 degrees for a third day in a row. action cam was in university city william people took advantage of another taste of summer. as we look outside tonight at the center city skyline, we're in store for a cooldown this weekend. but not without the potential of an unsettled evening. meteorologist cecily tynan is at the big board watching double scan radar. hey, cecily. >> hi, rick and double scan live already firing up. the cold front approaching our northwest suburbs and we are getting kind of a broken line of some showers and thunderstorms to the south. one cell working offer of lbi and there's another line

that's moving through delaware right now. it's moving across the delaware bay towards salem county. we've had 77 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes and it's all moving eastbound at about 20 miles per hour so townsend delaware, peck's corner all in the path of these storms. lightning you definitely want to get inside. also some heavy downpours and gusty winds. this is what to expect until about 10 o'clock. they're not going to be widespread but there will be isolated thunderstorms mainly south of philadelphia with brief heavy downpours, dangerous lightning. could have some wind up to about 40 miles per hour and also the potential that some of them contain some pea sized hail. so that's the moisture but really the bigger impact of this front is the fact that this ends this weekend. heat wave number one is in the books. est 93, today so far matching that. wednesday it started 91 degrees. temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees above average for the past three days but now springtime returns and

actually it's going to be unseasonably cool this weekend. i'll talk about that and i'll track some rain on the way in the accuweather five day forecast. rick. >> all right, cecily we'll check back in later. thank you. meantime the heat made for a tough workday for those who had to spend several hours outside. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has more on that trenton tonight. >> reporter: this crew from the trenton water works was patching a hole along east state street dealing with yet another day of hot weather that makes the job that much harder. what's their strategy for dealing with the heat? >> water. plenty of water and just, you know, take a break. we got air conditioner. we do a little bit and then come back in but the job got to get done. >> reporter: some people have had it with the heat. >> too soon. 9, 10 o'clock in the morning it's already like 82 degrees and it's just too much but it's new jersey. >> reporter: others love this weather or at least are managing to cope. >> 60 and 50's i'm like, oh, no, but when the 90's come i'm

comfortable. in trenton, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> the man behind that chaotic deadly scene in times square now stands accused of murder. police say 26-year-old richard rojas may have been under the influence of synthetic drugs. according to that officials rojas tried to run from the scene but was stopped by a nearby security dad. >> he said get him, get him so i ran toward him and i cackle him down. >> one person was killed in the rampage an 18-year-old tourist from michigan. 22 others were hurt. rojas has been charged with attempted murder and vehicular homicide. >> president trump headed overseas for his first foreign trip as commander in chief. the president is headed to saudia arabia israel italy and belgium a tour that will keep him out of washington through the end of next week. already american flags were on full display in riyadh. the first stop on trump's trip. officials say the kingdom is

looking forward to a "new beginning in saudi-u.s. relations". tonight former connecticut senator and former vice presidential candidate joe lieberman appears to be in the front running. lieberman and three other candidates were interviewed by president trump this week. this comes though amid more controversy about that decision to appoint a schedule of special you counsel to investigate alleged ties between president trump's campaign and russian officials. more tonight at 5:30. >> a little one-year-old girl is recovering after she was run over twice outside her own home. it happened in newport new castle county. according to police the driver that hit the child sped away and was later tracked down by officials. the girl was scooped up by her mom after the incident and rushed top a -- to a

neighbor's house. >> they were trying to get him to stop and he kept trying to maneuver around her. he ended up hitting her. >> reporter: the baby. >> no. he hit the mom. the baby i'm assuming was under the car. >> >> the little girl had the back of her skull fractured. she is expected to be okay. officials are investigating a crash that happened this morning in the philadelphia olney section. a pickup driver lost control and hit a pole on roosevelt boulevard near ninth street. at least one other vehicle was involved. so far police have not said if anyone was hurt. >> well, a task force is proposing a series of actions. mayor jim kenney was joined by governor tom wolf in outlining the tax force findings at city hall today and they came up with 18 recommendations. one of the proposals include safe injection sites where users can shoot up under the supervision of a doctor who can administer an antidote if

attempted to take students to school this morning in sumner county. all students were safely rescued. officials are warning people to prepare for more flooding in the coming days especially in the low lying areas of tennessee. well, prince's six siblings will inherit the late singer's estate. a judge made that ruling today. prince died from an accidental opioid overdose in april 2016. the purple rain singer did not have a will at the time. other people who tried to claim they were heirs included his niece and grand niece. prince's siblings will have to wait to inherit their shares though which have an estimated value of about $200 million. >> stocks ended the trading week on a high note today. >> earlier concerns sparked pie the trump administration subsided and that allowed markets to virtually erase the dent made this week on the worst trading day of 2017. the dow gained 158 nasdaq 47,

s & p 500 picked up 16. >> turning to health check tonight new research shows just one bite from a mosquito can transmit several diseases. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with details. hi, ali. >> this gives us even more reason to protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites. we know the mosquito that carries zika virus can also carry other nasty viruses. what was unclear was that a single bite could transmit multiple illnesses. researchers at colorado state university say, yes, mosquitos can infect humans with a number of diseases with just one bite. they say it raises concern that people may not be properly diagnosed. it also under exhorts importance of wearing repellant with deet and getting rid of standing water to get rid of mosquitos. the families and caregivers were given

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> that's right meteorologist cecily tynan here with a forecast i think you'll like. >> i've got much cooler air on the way but we also have some scattered storms. double scan live showing i'm tracking some storms moving into cumberland county and kent county right now. total lightning strikes with this view six so it's not severe but it is pretty intense moving to the

southeast at about 20 miles an hour just north of route 49, so rosenhayn carmel vineland and millville all in the path of this storm. with the lightning you want to get inside when you see the clouds getting dark when you hear that rumble of thunder. we also have a pretty significant band moving into kent county right now. if you were heading south on highway one towards the delaware beaches. this has 25 lightning strikes in the past 50 minutes and what we can do on storm tracker we can actually cut inside the storm and this shows just how high this storm is. it's about 30,000 feet above the surface of the earth so what this means is that they have some pretty intense downpours. also there is the potential for some hail with this storm, not severe, we're talking about pea sized hail but they do pack a punch if you have to drive through it so do be careful if you're traveling again mainly south of philadelphia. right now though it's still steamy. 92 in philadelphia, officially in the heat wave, 90 in trenton.

the same in reading. 91 at the atlantic city airport yet again the cool spot in cape may you get that wind off the ocean it's currently 72. so, satellite and radar showing the system i'm tracking it's a cold front and the this is what's bringing us some of those isolated thunderstorms. it moved through overnight. another area of high pressure builds in tomorrow and what that sets up is a flow out of the east-southeast off the ocean. that pulls in cooler air and it also pulls in a lot of cloud cover. so, future tracker showing around 8:30 tonight still could have some scattered thunderstorms south of philadelphia. the morning it will be pretty gray. lots of clouds with a little bit of drizzle possible but i do think we will see some peeks of sunshine and tonight a breath of fresh air. you can turn off the air conditioning. at 9 o'clock 78 degrees. look how quickly we drop into the 60's. 1 o'clock in the morning we stay in the 60's through the morning and tomorrow it's going to be a struggle to hit 70. calling for a high of 70 degrees so that means most of the day in the 60's. that's 5 degrees below normal. lots of clouds with some peeks

was just 12. he remains behind bars on a $1.5 million bail. neither the driver nor passenger was wearing their seat belts in this deadly crash in warrington. a police officer on routine patrol came across the car on its roof along paul valley road. the driver, 21-year-old sean wright was ejected from his seat and died at the scene. a passenger suffered minor injuries. authorities say paul valley road has many sharp turns and it appears wright lost control hit a curve and flipped the car over. students at martin luther king high school were dismissed due to a smoke bomb. officials tell "action news" someone let off a smoke bomb this morning in the school auditorium. earlier today a small fire was reported on the roof of the school. apparently touched off by a construction crew. >> a tow truck driver was hit on the road and injured while trying to attend to a disabled vehicle this morning o chopper6 hd was over the scene

around route 55 southbound near exit 50 in mantua township. the tow truck driver was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the person who hit the truck driver also had to be hospitalized but is expected to recover. traffic is back to normal in cherry hill after an early morning gas main break here. started about 12:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of route 70 near curtis avenue. there had been nightly road closures here for road of work. pse&g says one of their crews was working when a 2-inch main was accidentally cut. they were able to repair the problem and traffic was flowing again by 10:40 this morning. volunteers is the center in the park were honored today. it's a senior center in germantown. that he were treated to a luncheon. mayor jim kenney addressed the group and thanked them for all their hard work. he said that even though this is love your park week he's finding it a little hard to be outside. he and his allergies are acting up and we know he's not

alone. >> delaware senator tom carper concerned about protecting federal clean air. he stopped by the air monitoring station here in wilmington for a tour. representatives from the american lung association were there. they want to make sure that folks do have clean air to breathe. meantime from our new jersey news room crews will be working round the clock to finish the avalon beach fill project. it's going to be completed in just a few days ahead of schedule. nearly a million cubic yards of sand had been put on the north avalon beach front. the beach will be ready for business of course memorial day weekend and for hurricane season which begins june 1st. this project cost 7.7 million bucks. it was largely financed by federal and state funding. >> well, spending the afternoon by the water is a nice way to round out the heat especially in this heat. drone6 looking live at the stotesbury regatta on the schuylkill river on this muggy hot friday. today and tomorrow high school rowing teams will compete for top honors.

>> they will be rooting for one of their own. terry finley a 1982 truman high school grad owns a part of always dreaming the favorite to win the second leg of the triple crown. finley and his partners brought a 25 percent share of always dreaming back in march for a whopping $1.295 million before he won the kentucky derby. finley believes always dreaming will win the preakness in baltimore tomorrow. finley stopped by channel6 and he told us at post time tomorrow his stomach will be in knots. >> it's a test of champions and, you know, a lot of horses have tried it and very, very few horses actually get the triple crown but i know one thing we're the only horse in 2017 that has a shot to win the triple crown. >> more with the levittown native terri finley and how he ended up owning a kentucky derby winner at 6 o'clock. what a gesture the soul arena football team are giving out free tickets to all military personnel and veterans for tomorrow's game

"action news" reporter jeanette reyes with that story. >> reporter: chase played for hours during buehler elementary school's annual field day today. >> field day is today and i'm really happy. >> reporter: but this simple act of talking let alone

dancing is being described by doctors as nothing short of amazing. >> his recovery is a miracle. >> reporter: this time three years ago a similar day filled with fun and games ended with the 10-year-old suddenly collapsing. >> i was playing soccer and -- and then i was like out. >> he just sat down and then just kind of laid back and he just like -- his eyes closed. >> i heard the words get up and i turn around and chase is laying there unresponsive. >> reporter: chase was that rushed to the hospital. doctors first thought he had a seizure. but his parents insisted it was something else. 18 hours later, tests revealed a devastating diagnosis. he suffered a massive stroke on the left side of his brain. >> at that point we didn't know if he was going to survive or if he did survive if he was going to be able to walk or talk or eat a taco again. >> reporter: chase was taken to chop where he stayed for over three months and

5:55, spray beach at 5:57 and that will quickly move off the southern tip there of long beach island and as we head towards delaware and just to the north and east of dover you can see this really intense area of lightning 62 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes north and east of dover. about to head over the bay and may clip southern parts of fortescue and cumberland county. we'll watch if it holds together as it heads towards cape may. as we take a live look at sky6 over penn's landing all is quiet here in the delaware valley. we just got the haze, the heat and the humidity and heat wave number one of the year. as we take a look at philadelphia, 93 was the official high temperature, reading at 90 degrees, trenton 91. same for wilmington, atlantic city airport, 93 degrees so many areas had three days in a row of 90 or above and that makes it officially a heat wave. at the present hour 90 in reading, 86 in lancaster, notice the little drop here.

you can see some of the yellows circled by some of the oranges. that's the cluster of thunderstorms that passed through northern delaware now heading into southern delaware, millville at 90 degrees. satellite and radar, there is a front coming in from the north and west and that's the dividing line of that soupy summer air we have now and that refreshing air off to the north, that does funnel in here over the weekend. so you can see to the north it's just in the 50's right now. in buffalo and syracuse and that northerly wind will be taking over later on tonight. so, it does turn cooler, breezy, 55 by tomorrow morning in the suburbs. 61 degrees for center city. those scattered thunderstorms in southern areas earlier this evening should shut off. say that five times fast. should shut off by 8 o'clock tonight. [laughter] kind of walking on the edge with that one. there's the high pressure coming in from the north. only 70 tomorrow with limited sunshine and as high pressure kind of wedges down a new system arrives on monday but the clouds spill in ahead of that on sunday so both days
