"action news" reporter john rawlins is live where it all happened. john. >> reporter:ve way where a car were you coming out of that drive way. there was a commotion of some sort, a 14 month old was struck. she is at the a.i. dupont hospital with a head injury. >> she had a pretty bad cut and she was -- mood was -- blood was protruding down her face. >> reporter: a neighbor describing lea purdue's injuries. across the street a new castle county investigator was marking evidence where car pulling out of this drive way struck the toddler. at one point it's believed lea was under that car. >> this happened within 30 minutes of this little girl running up to me hugging my thigh and she gave me a high-five. >> reporter: josé rivera is distraught. he was visiting inside the girl's home this morning when

he heard a commotion outside. it was the girl's mother screaming at the driver of a silver mazda who was attempting to leave. >> she was trying to get the man to stop. to halt. >> reporter: because the baby -- >> he kept turning, trying to like, you know, maneuver around her and stuff and she ended up -- he ended up hitting her. >> reporter: the baby. >> no, he hit the mom. the baby i'm assuming was under the car. >> reporter: the driver of the mazda fled the license plate number was reported and police stopped this car six to 7 miles away in hockessin. the driver was taken into custody. this afternoon an aunt of lea's who had been with her at the hospital gave this update. >> right now she's asleep. she's doing really, really good. i guess there's no broken bones or anything. >> fracture. >> a fracture in the back of her skull so they're watching that and everything. >> reporter: well, we spoke with a family member just a short time ago. she told us that lea is being

operated on right now by a plastic surgeon to deal with a gash in her forehead. the prognosis though overall is good we're told. in the meantime the police continue to investigate this incident. live in newport john rawlins channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you john. 31-year-old edward moses jr. is unarrest tonight for the murder of his girlfriend in darby borough this morning. police were called to the home on spring valley road for reports of gunshots at 7:30. the victim, 26-year-old crystal thomas was that found shot to death inside. police say moses is the father of the victim's child. police have not released a motive for the shooting. the fbi and lehigh county police raided a house in salisbury township this morning and took two people into custody. investigators were seen in the backyard of the home on emmaus avenue searching cars motorcycles and a boat. justice department officials

tells the raid is part of a drug related investigation involving cocaine and heroin. seven people in all were arrested at various locations. the heat continues to oppress the philadelphia area for a third day. that means it's an official heat wave. youngsters were keeping cool with water spouts in dillworth park outside philadelphia city hall and this snapping turtle was soaking up the warmth in the wissahickon creek. of course turtles are cold-blooded animals so this guy was really enjoying the warm temperatures today. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the big board with the latest from double scan radar. cecily. >> jim, the heat wave is ending tonight with the arrival of a cold front and as expected it is sparking some isolated stormy weather south of philadelphia. this is pretty much what future tracker was showing yesterday. the southern tip of lbi getting hit with a potent little cell, three lightning strikes the past 15 minutes some heavy downpours. this actually is the third

cell to hit lbi in the past two hours. they've progressively been working down to the south and there's a line of thunderstorms working into the delaware bay. this is moving southeast at about 20 miles per hour. so, it is heading towards cape may, villas reeds beach north cape may rio grande in the path of this storm. 27 lightning strikes the past 15 minutes. this also has some heavy downpours and the potential for small hail. what this front will do is say goodbye to the heat. three days in a row of temperatures in the 90's. wednesday 91,est and -- yesterday and today 93 degrees. that's officially 15 to 20 degrees above average but temperatures will crash tonight. we're looking tomorrow at more than a 20-degree drop in temperatures, also much lower humidity. however, there's a trade-off. we won't see that much sunshine this weekend and i am tracking some rain on the way. i'll talk about that in the seven-day forecast. jim. >> cecily, remember, you can get the hourly forecast, the

"action news" reporter bob brooks explains. >> reporter: what you're seeing isn't just prepping for any prom. at pennsbury high school they do the best. it's literally been titled as the best prom in america and a lot of work goes into making this happen. >> we've actually been working on this since last spring when we were juniors. >> reporter: this year's theme is yo' philly. the 62ly is decked out in all things philadelphia. >> we have the magic gardens, we have philly sports. >> reporter: part of why the prom is so good here is the major music acts the school has somehow able to book. this year's act philadelphia native amir thompson better known as questlove drummer for the roots and almost didn't

happen. >> we received a e-mail that they were pulling out. >> reporter: a daring to the heart of the best prom's prom committee. >> it was tough to know that the prom we worked so hard at was kind of falling apart. >> reporter: here's how it played out and came to happy ending today. around 10 o'clock the school district sent us a message citing technology concerns from the questlove team as the reason why. so this morning i reached out to questlove via twitter. with this message at questlove heard you aren't going to be at pennsbury high school prom. what happened? shortly after he sent out a series of tweets stating he had some things of a serious unavoidable matter but then recommitted to the prom. he even sent me a direct message through twitter saying it all came down a scheduling conflict and reaffirmed his position writing "i'm not even going to charge them. i'm doing prom. case closed ." >> we'll send us the pennsbury love. i think he's going to send us the philly love and then we'll party from there. >> reporter: this section of the prom the river walk they're putting the finishing touches on it right now. now, when this whole confusion happened with questlove the

school reached out to dj pauly d from the show jersey shore. they might co-perform together. those are details they're still working on. for now reporting at pennsbury high school bob brooks channel6 "action news". >> villanova university held its commencement ceremonies today but for one graduate this was a day about making history. irwin medway received an honorary doctorate today. he is 93. he's been taking classes at villanova every semester for 24 years. history is nothing new to him. he is a veteran of world war ii a recipient of the purple heart and the bronze star who says his age has helped him see things differently. >> reporter: something i learned by getting older is i've become very bold so i'm not a philosopher, i'm not -- i'm teaching and i'm saying things that maybe i shouldn't say. >> as you might imagine,

medway is a believer in life long education. he shares that passion with his seven grandchildren telling them they all must go to college. the state of new jersey has a new research vessel designed monitor the quality and health of its waters. state officials dedicated the boat today in atlantic city. it is named for robert shin who was the state's longest serving commissioner of environmental protection. the 32-foot vessel is able to take samples of water quality 24 hours a day. thousands of high school athletes have that descended on philadelphia for the stotesbury cup. it is the world's largest high school regatta held right here on the schuylkill river. and so drone6 is now flying along the schuylkill tonight. this is a live picture from drone6. this ream mind for drivers. kelly drive will be closed until 8 o'clock tomorrow night. police are detouring traffic between strawberry mansion and

fountain green drives. they unveiled new images today of the upcoming renovation project, the holocaust memorial plaza in center city philadelphia. the $7 million project will expand on the 6 million jewish martyr statue which was installed at 16th and ben franklin parkway in 1964. the new plaza will add a remembrance wall, six pillars and an eternal flame. construction is expected to begin this coming winter. officials broke ground today on a major project to improof wissinoming park. the upgrades to the space on the 5800 block of frankford avenue include a new playground and storm water garden. the mural arts program will also create a mural at wissinoming park. coming up on "action news" tonight, always dreaming will race for the second jewel of the triple crown tomorrow at the preakness stakes and a man from levittown has a big stake

her moment on stage with some young supporters after receiving their degrees the graduates took the traditional hippocratic oath. >> ♪ fifth graders from mercer county have already learned a valuable lesson. you're never too young to have your voice heard. and because they spoke up, a couple will have the honeymoon they were denied 60 years ago. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has the full story. >> reporter: sometimes you don't have to be a grownup to right a wrong. just ask reverend caldwell and his wife grace who are receivingth anniversary president from some school children. reverend caldwell has come to speak to the fifth graders at bear tavern elementary school in titusville for the last two years about service and civil rights. he worked and marched with the dr. martin luther king. on one of his visits he told the students about his honeymoon in 1957.

he and his wife drove eight hours to stay at the mount airy lodge in the poconos. they had a reservation but were turned away because of their race. >> can you imagine having one of the most joyous moments in your life turn into a horrible memory. >> it made me really sad. i wanted to do something for them because it was really bad what they did back then. >> reporter: the fifth graders launched a letter writing campaign to the mount airy casino resorts asking if it might consider hosting the caldwells for their 60th anniversary. the resort gladly agreed. >> it's a way to right the wrong of the past. you can't fix it but you can sort of set an example for what it should be like. >> reporter: at a school assembly the children can surprised the caldwells with a weekend get away they deserved 60 years ago. >> yes, we can say yes to gil and grace caldwell 60 years after they were rejected is that wonderful. >> what happened after that is what's important. and especially what these young people have done today.

>> fans of thoroughbred raising will have their eyes focused on baltimore. it is the preakness. >> always dreaming the favorite. when there's a big national sports story there's often a philadelphia connection. preakness the second jewel of the triple crown is tomorrow. the favorite is kentucky derby winner always dreaming. the horse's owner has roots in our area. jeff skversky takes a closer look. >> always dreaming. >> reporter: growing up in levittown, terry finley was always dreaming of winning the derby. >> always winning has won the kentucky derby. >> reporter: so it was a dream come true two weeks ago for finley a 1982 truman high school grad who owns 25 percent of always dreaming. >> it chokes you up. it's just an emotional surge

that is really indescribable. you want to cry, you want to jump, you want to scream. >> reporter: finley and his partners at west point thoroughbreds ponied up one point would $5 million in march for their share in the three-year-old colt. finley who grew up middle class has been investing in horses since 1991 and had never won the run for the roses until now. >> i'm probably the only owner that has ever won the kentucky derby that bought their first horse on credit cards 'cause that's what i did. i just -- i mean i'm -- i don't know if i'm proud or embarrassed or what. >> reporter: well, finley should be proud. always dreaming is the favorite to win saturday's preakness the second leg of a triple crown. >> we'll be having our fingers crossed. we'll be nervous and our stomachs will be in knots. we should be strongly favored if we have avenue good day. we don't have to have a great day but if we have a good day and there's no one else that has a great great day we'll win. >> reporter: win and in three weeks the bucks county

native believes they have a realistic shot to win only the second triple crown in the last 38 years. jeff skversky channel6 "action news." >> to baseball. phillies lost 12 of their last 14 games. the road trip now pittsburgh for a three game series. jeremy hellickson has slumped in the month of may. he went four and zero with a 1.80 era in april. he's winless in three starts with an era near eight. he hasn't pitched more than six innings in his last four outings. nba will announce finalists for awards. joel embiid better be on that short list. he averaged nearly eight rebounds per game this past season but only appeared in 31 games which might be a knock. earlier in the week embiid stated his case to win this award. >> i think i should win the rookie of the year is about being the best rookie.

really tracking. it's right over the delaware bay right now. 28 lightning strikes so just really affecting the fish and fisher men moving southeast at 28 miles an hour. if it stays together villas north cape may del haven west cape may rio grande and whitesboro in the path of the storm. and i love this photo john wood jr. tweeted this to me from dover delaware earlier this evening showing the dark clouds, showing the rain and also showing the rays which is a fancy word corpuscular rays. temperatures still in the 90's for philadelphia. wilmington a rain cooled 79. dover 77 with showers allentown 86, trenton 90 atlantic city airport 91. we're saying goodbye to temperatures in the 90's for awhile. we've had seven days this month above normal and pretty amazing we started this week

two and half degrees below normal but with that heat wave the month running about a half degrees above normal but we will drop below normal again for the weekend. kind of a rollercoaster with the temperatures. so, satellite and radar showing that cold front it's slicing through right now and again the isolated thunderstorm activity to the south, what this does ushers in high pressure tomorrow with an easterly flow so scattered thunderstorms early tonight, then breezy and cooler. you will feel the difference in the air mass as we head through the overnight hours. 55 in the suburb, about 61 degrees for center city. tomorrow more clouds than sun. i think we'll see some peeks of sunshine but temperatures running more than 20 degrees cooler than today. 70 in philadelphia, that's actually 5 degrees below normal. the same in allentown. if you're heading to the beaches, it's going to be on the cool side temperatures only in the low 60's. on sunday, still that easterly flow with a double barrel high pressure kind of holding off this warm front so the high only 69 degrees and that warm front will bring us a pretty

rainy monday. so the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow much cooler, limited sunshine, great weather for the union game with a high of 70. on sunday some sunshine early then building clouds, the high slips to 69 degrees and monday we're back up to 74 but it comes with a round of rain. future tracker showing some heavy rain moving through around lunchtime late in the afternoon we'll see sunshine. tuesday gorgeous, high pressure over us bright and pleasant 78 degrees. for the middle of the week we get into a pretty unsettled weather pattern. it's rainy on wednesday, perhaps a thunderstorm, 74 degrees. thursday staying unsettled with a chance of some showers and thunderstorms 74 but look at this. great timing for the kickoff to the memorial day weekend. mostly sunny skies, 75 on friday looking like a nice start. >> thank you cecily. >> uh-huh. >> abc's "world news tonight" with david muir next on channel6.
