university of pennsylvania health program. to patients were on board and no one was injured here on the ground. the fiery crash happened before noon time. a euro copter e 135 helicopter training flight headed from the atlantic city airport to the newcastle airport. it came down in an office park, the pilot was the only person on board and the only fatality. john hughes saw it all. >> it sounds like it was struggling and i looked up and saw it going straight down at the last minute and then this blew up of course. >> many in the business park heard it and then saw the grim explosion. the ntsb will asurvive shortly

to start the investigation. >> nobody on the grown was injured. that was the only fatality involved. >> reporter: we expect an oc update in just moments from the ntsb and other investigators and state officials who are here. live from newcastle delaware, i'm vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. we are following a developing story out of logan township, new jersey, just in the last 40 minutes, crews were able to contain a dangerous leak from a tanker car. the hazmat situation caused people to evacuate nearby businesses. gray hall is live near the command center near the scene at osprey court. what is the scene there now? >> reporter: we can tell you brian, that this is good news. the valve is sealed because hundredsp hundreds of people were impacted by the leak. that is the command center there. the nerve center where crews

were meeting to see what went wrong here and shut off the valve. the biggest fear was an explosion because the chemical is flammable but thankfully that did not happen. look at this video, you see the white smoke filling the air it happened at 9:owe 350 along center area road. they reported smelling the chemical and somehow a valve on a rail car failed and caused the leak to the 30,000 gallon rail car that was parked and full at the time. and they gave us and update. >> hazmat teams were able to make entry to the zone and able to get the valve secured for the time being and everything looks like pretty decent shape right

from the goodwill fire company and neighboring fire company as rived at the scene and were able to extinguish the flames. the male pilot and sole occupant was declared dead at the scene. we are withholding the victim's name pending the notification of his next of kin. there was no other injuries as a result of this crash. minor structural damage to a shed was sustained by flying debris and flames. upon speaking with aviation officials, it was learned that the pilot, who is employed by metro aviation had flown from the atlantic city airport and conducting training in the area of the newcastle county airport. this is currently an ongoing and active investigation that is conducted by the delaware state police. the national transportation safety board and the federal aviation administration. further information on the investigation will be released at a late time time as the

investigation dictates. anyone have questions at this point. >> was the weather a factor? >> that is still part of the on going and active investigation. we are waiting for a couple of our sister agencies to arrive and we'll sit down and discuss all the possible factors. the pilot himself was conducting a training. that information will have to be obtained from penn star or owner of the helicopter, the company that employees the pilot. >> did they notify the tower of problems ahead of time. >> we with looking into that. >> was he going into or coming back out of the airport. >> from what we know he was conducted approach training and have you to talk to the people that own the helicopter and

employee the pilot. >> we have been listening in to an update from newcastle, delaware where the the helicopter crash happened. the pilot was a 37-year-old man who worked as an employee for metro aviation conducting a training mission in this area when the plane crashed. killing the pilot who was the only person on board. >> no other injuries on the ground some damage to structures nearby. apparently a shed caught on fire here. but the faa is now investigating and they have not released the name of the pilot. but a 37-year-old pilot the sole occupant is dead today. this news conference is streaming at 6abc.com. also today, jury deliberations continue in the trial of a father charged with killing his son. the jury has been reviewing tapes that feature the defend, david creato. prosecutors say he killed his 3-year-old son brendon to stop his girlfriend from leaving him

in 2015. creato says that the boy wandered away from the home. the suspect in last night's standoff inside of a delaware county cvs appeared before a judge. hudson was arraigned on several charges hours after he barricaded himself inside of this cvs on the 200 block of baltimore avenue in media. hudson is accused of trying to rob the store at 10:00 forcing employees into a back room and one worker called police as hudson allegedly tried to flee and that is when he ran back inside and holed up for two hours before he surrendered. >> it's disconcerting that something like that would happen in the first place in a little town like media. >> cvs is offering counseling to the employees involved in all of this and fortunately nobody was injured. memorial day weekend nearly

asking to contribute 2% of their gdp for defense spending but only five current members meet the goal. and we are getting insight as to why a small plane crash add approaching new jersey's teterboro airport last week. the flight did not start the circling turn until it was less than a mile from the runway and controllers say aircrafts typically start that turn four miles away. and the ntsb issued this information today. it crashed into several small warehouses killing the two crew members on board and the aircraft had taken off from philadelphia international airport. and officials are telling families to be prepared for beaches this season. they urged residents to take an emergency kit to take on the road and have an evacuation plan

medical helicopter crash in delaware. we know that the pilot was on a training flight when he crashed behind a building one mile southeast of newcastle airport. the video shows the resulting fire ball and delaware state police says that the pilot was the only one on board of the chopper that provides services for pen star, the transportation service for university of pennsylvania health system. the pilot a 37-year-old franklin, new jersey, man was killed in the crash but his name has not been released as of yet. no one else was hurt. with we are waiting to hear what caused the helicopter to go down. we are following breaking news out of gloucester county new jersey. just about 1900 people are still not allowed to return to their businesses near osprey court. after chemicals started leaking from a train, it burns like

fraternity for five years that they failed to comply with drexel's alcohol regulations. they were placed on interim suspense after two students said they were sexually assaulted at the house. the fraternity can appeal the five year suspension. visitors to wildwood can breathe easier because they have voted to ban smoking on the boardwalk, it does not take affect until january but leaders ask people to refrain from smoking this year. the health hazarded and the fire risk from discarded cigarettes. young people took a moment today to thank philadelphia police officers. students at the mathematics and civics science and charter school held the eighth annual luncheon to honor the men and women on the force. they treated them to lunch and students in the choir also performed today and it was

created out of concern for violence against police officers and a way to thank the officers for keeping citizens safe especially young children. wreath laying and memorial service was held today in philadelphia's university section. it honored the 100th anniversary of the united states's enry in world war i and they took part with a reading and a poem. and they shared the biographies of two soldiers before wreaths were placed on the soldier's gravesites. hundreds of wilmington students ventured out of the classroom today to volunteer. the nine and graders from saint georged split up from 19 different charities. we call up with the group at the mission. they cleaned the shelter and wiped down the chairs, their hard work was part of the school's freshman community service day. well, it might be a damp, not so sunny day around here.

"action news" delaware valley's leading news program. with jaime apody, meteorologist, cecily tynan, rick williams and monica malpass. developing now officials are trying to figure out how a helicopter crashed in newcastle county. this morning the medical transport went down in a ditch killing the pilot and leaving a smokey scene behind. officials are making their way there to find out what went on. it happened at 11:15 at the 200 block of quigley boulevard in newcastle. sara bloomquist is live on the scene with the latest tonight. >> reporter: rick and monica, authorities confirm that the pilot. the only person on board of this chopper was a 37-year-old

franklinville, new jersey man in gloucester county. he was conducting train exercises approaching the newcastle airport. that is when it went down in this ditch behind this hill. a shed and some cars were damaged. somehow the pilot managed to avoid the adjacent buildinged. cell phone video caught the quick black smyth one mile southeast of the newcastle airport. >> a privately owned helicopter crashed here on quigley boulevard in newcastle. we confirm that one person was on board and one fatality. >> the chopper was this model a euro e 135 operated by metro transportation that ran for university of pennsylvania
