possible of some veryvy weather throughout the evening. meteorologist, cecily tynan, is tracking the storm with stormtracker 6 live double scan radar. what is happening out there? >> reporter: this is just the appetizer to the main event. double scan live radar showing widespread weather to the north and west over d.c. and a renegade line of storms moving over us and this is causing problems for the evening commute over i-95 and 676 the schuylkill expressway 15 lightning strikes in the past 15 min, it's moving west northwest heavy downpours. and thunder and lightning and really the intense downpours the main problem. could have ponding of water on roads and in philadelphia the rain falling at the rate of 4 inches per hour. this is the kind of rain if you are driving through it you pull over and wait it out. it's hard to see when it's raining that heavily.

for tonight more evening showers and thunderstorms waiting on the bigger batch over d.c. there is potential that storms could have gusty winds and even small hail. delaware and southern knowledge they broke into sunshine today and temperature there's near 80 degrees with the possibility of isolate the severe storms. heading into the weekend i am tracking some unsettled weather it won't be a washout and i'll talk about that in the full accuweather forecast. >> we have the latest now on helicopter tragedy in delaware a pilot was killed when his medical held cop crashed. it ended in smoke and flames. sara bloomquist and vernon odom are on the scene. sabra let start with you. this is the same company that supplied choppers for the university of pennsylvania health system. >> reporter: jim that is right, but the pilot was the only

person on board. no patients or penn medicine employees we learned the pilot was a 37-year-old man from franklinville, new jersey, the chopper went down in a drainage ditch and somehow the pilot avoided all the adjacent buildings. eyewitnesss caught cell phone video after the chopper crashed into this industrial park a mile southeast of the newcastle airport. >> it crashed here on quigley boulevard in newcastle. there was one person and one fatality. the pilot was conducting a solo training flight and travelled from atlantic city to newcastle this morning. at 11:55 the chopper when down in a drainage ditch and burst into flames. >> no other injuries as a result of the crash and minor damage to

a shed because of flying debris and flames. >> it was operated by penn star that provides the services for the university of pennsylvania health system. firefighters were rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames. faa officials and delaware state police cordoned off the area and put up a drone to capture aerial images and the ntsb is in route. >> it's up to them if they want to continue to conduct the investigation tonight or hold off until the daytime hours until tomorrow morning. again, you can see law enforcement investigators on the scene they are here throughout the afternoon the ntsb is expected to arrive at the crash scene at 7:00 tonight and the pilot was a 37-year-old man from franklinville, new jersey.

was kind of scary. the big explosion and flames, felt the heat from it. kind of the shock jay and marion williams own compressed air of delaware their office just a few hundred yards from the crash scene. >> we heard and felt the crash across the street and we went around immediately to see if we could render assistance and the flames were just aatrocious at that time. >> trying to avoid buildings out here. he saved lives. >> jim indeed no one was injured here on the ground. a lot of folks here working five and six days a week realize this could have been a large scale disaster. live in newcastle, delaware,

vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. in logan township gloucester county authority his to evacuate thousands of workers from an industrial area this morning when a rail car started to leak the chemical once that turns to vapor it can explode. "action news" reporter gray hall has more from the scene. >> reporter: we can tell you that things are calmer now and good news. first crews stopped the leak and the roads in the area are now back open. >> good news hazmat teams were able to make entry into the zone and with the support of the viper suppression from the fire departments they were able to get the valve secured. >> a big sigh of relief from emergency workers and the threat of an explosion is over in logan township. after a valve on a 30,000 gallon rail car failed and leaked chemical similar to propane into the air.

>> it poses a significant health threat and it's an irritant and the primary issue was the fire hazard and explosion hazard. 1900 people were evacuated from nearby businesses and people said the smoke near their jobs was alarming. >> you could see the gas bubbling up and it was a little frightening. >> we had to evacuate and leave everything behind don't take anything just get out of the building. >> officials evacuated a half mile radius an industrial area, they understand the concern but it interrupted business and a headache to deal with. traffic was backed up in the area and exit 10 along 295 southbound had had to be closed for a while. >> it's safety first and business second. >> now that the valve is secure before the area can return to

normal crews will do a final sweep to make sure there are no other concerns. >> we'll go building to building and do air monitoring to make sure the buildings are secure and safe. >> no serious injuries are reported and one worker was checked out on scene and refused treatment and another evaluated at the hospital and both will be okay and the roads are now open in the area and that threat has been resolved. in logan township. gray hall channel 6 "action news." two philadelphia police officers and another driver were hurt in an accident on the boulevard this afternoon. a police cruiser and two cars crashed into the southbound lanes near levic in may fair. the injuries were taken to area hospitals in stable condition and police took a driver into custody for suspected dui. good news for customers in old city. service is restored to customers

that last it on third street. but third street remains closed between chestnut and walnut as crew goes to fix the road. the road remains closed until at least next tuesday. the jury ended their second full day of deliberations of david creato in haddon township. the jury watched for a second time the video of creato's interrogation in it he was told his son was found dead. the prosecution maintains that creato killed his son to maintain a romantic relationship with his girlfriend. jurors will return on tuesday. coming up on "action news" tonight. the city of philadelphia wants to help protect you from the sun and ahead the dispensers you will soon see installed at parks and pooled and popular spotted around the city. and honoring those that served. the ceremony marked the 100th

prepare for the upcoming hurricane season and del marcia officials say that employees are investing extra training and taking part in drills and the red cross and aaa were on hand to show the emergency kit that every family should have in their homes and in their cars. hurricane season lasts until november 30th. in honor of the 100th anniversary of the start of world war i. they brought together members of the service and local students. students from reach cyber charter school came together today inside of the chapel at the va medical center, poems and passages from books were dedicated to fallen soldiers and wreaths were laid on the gravesites of world war i vet rabs at a nearby cemetery.

this is the class in session school tour. designed to inspire young people to succeed. they addressed topics like ambition, determination and respect. it was a special graduation ceremony at montgomery county community college today. the school awarded a diploma to the 100th graduate of the gateway to college program and it helps at risk students cleat high school while earning credits towards an associated degree or a certificate. and the program (ed with a $10,000 grant from peco.
