the hospital after an early morning crash on the turnpike. but the big story on "action news" tonight is the start of the summer season, welcome to the memorial day holiday weekend! it looked like they are already in mid season form in ocean city today. beach goers boardwalkers and merchants are ecstatic that memorial day has finally arrived at the jersey shore. who can blame them. one of the great ocean city traditions, people dressed in business attire, men and women walked into the ocean to officially welcome the new season. "action news" reporter trish hartman will be live in sea isle city. john rawlins is covering road travel on the pennsylvania turnpike in king of prussia and cesily tynan has the all-important forecast from accuweather. cecily let's start with you. >> reporter: jim were starting the holiday weekend what will be the weather theme of the weekend unsettled. double scan live showing we're

not looking at heavy rain, but we have spotty showers most of them across salem and cumberland county. one batch over cumberland moved through salem earlier. we've got another batch developing, as well. they are brief, they are not that heavy, they move through and then you see the return of partly sunny skies. excuse me. that's what we had today. we started the day with a good amount of sunshine. the clouds bubbled up in the afternoon. temperatures made it into the 70s. philadelphia, 74 down from a high of 76. one degree shy of normal. it's cooler in cape may with the wind off the bay, 69 degrees. if you're heading to the phillies take a sweatshirt or jacket some clearing the winds diminish. first pitch, 72. 9th inning, 67 degrees. double scan showing the next system we're tracking looked like it was coming through on sunday, it will come through tomorrow afternoon. as you pack your bathing suits pack the umbrellas keep them on

cynwyd didn't let the wind ruin their beach time. five month ava made her first trip to the beach today. >> we have a lot more gear to bring with us. but it's a lot more fun. >> feet in the sands for a little while it was nice. >> reporter: for this retiree this marks the start of a month at the shore and more memories with his grandson. >> last year he bought a fish, he said it was the best day of my life. i said really? you're five years old, so it was great. >> reporter: a number of memorial day ceremonies are planned. sea isle ceremony is 10:00 a.m. on the actual holiday in veterans park it is planned for

10:00 a.m. on monday, if it rains it moves indoors. keep an eye on the forecast. jim. >> john rawlins is long the pennsylvania turnpike in king of prussia. the fact is, john, the shore does not have a monopoly on memorial day activities. >> reporter: no, it does not, sometimes it can seem like anybody leaves on a weekend go east and stop when they get to the ocean. in that heavy traffic there are pleasant of people going in different directions. by early this afternoon, traffic on the walt whitman bridge was heavy and at times crawling. the same on the ben franklin bridge, and some ramps from i-95. aaa mid atlantic said there are 4 million people in the five-county area. it predicts one in ten will take to the roads this weekend and travel. in part because we're feeling good about the economy unlike a few years ago in the wake of the great recession. >> now that the economy has

slow and steadily rebounded. people have more disposable income they are willing to make the invest in travel. >> most of the invest going east to the shore, but some heading west, as well. >> we're coming from livingston new jersey and going to malvern pennsylvania. >> reporter: inside this trailer small race cars, the family of two young boys heading away from the ocean for a chester county race racetrack. >> we're coming from ocean port new jersey and going to honeybrook, we're going out to race this weekend. >> for the folks in this vehicle, the goal to cheer on a group of 4 to 18 year old. >> i'm from staten island new york heading to lancaster pennsylvania for a dance competition. >> reporter: are you in the competition or are you teaching? >> i taught now we're about to go watch and support.

turnpike in west deptford when a tour bus was rear ended by a tractor-trailer. "action news" reporter vernon odem has that story. >> reporter: dwight baylor from britain was heading to atlanta for the memorial day weekend. fate interrupted his plan as the panda tour bus ended trip on the jersey turnpike. >> chaos. >> reporter: from the emergency room at cooper hospital, he explained what panda busy was riding was hit from behind by the tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes as they passed through west deptford. 50 passengers were aboard, more than 30 were treated at local hospitals. >> you don't know what the conditions was outside, gas leak. >> all we heard was a bang from the back of the bus and the bus

spin and flipped over. >> reporter: the bus was heading south to the carolinas and on to atlanta with low fare tickets. many had relatives from new york to take them back home. many were stranded for many hours, calling panda time and again for transportation back to new york and asking the whereabouts of the luggage. >> we lost luggage and everything on the bus. >> reporter: have they told you where it is. >> my luggage they never brung. i didn't want to leave without my luggage. >> reporter: 14 hours after the crash panda got a bus here to pick up those who had no money and no way back to new york. >> the state police continue their investigation of the crash which has ruined the holiday weekend for 50 people who were heading down south for relaxation and reunion. i'm vernon odem channel 6 "action news" in camden, new jersey. a large water main break has left more than 20 customers

without water service in barrington camden county. clemens bridge road is shut down. we're hearing details about the murder investigation of slain radio host april kauffman, the revelations came over arguments whether april's husband jim kauffman should be forced to provide dna. it was revealed that a blood sample discovered in the guest room has the victim's blood and somebody else's, the investigators don't know who that blood long as to. investigators said it's just another step in an on going investigation. dr. kauffman has never been named a suspect but both sides spoke outside the court today. >> seeking of the dna of dr. kauffman is another tool to

allow us to it with the evidence we collected. >> reporter: five years is enough it is time in our view for the prosecutors to turn their attention to other directions. >> the judge will make a ruling by tuesday, that decision will be sealed. pennsylvania governor tom wolf has signed legislation that helps the state comply with the federal real i.d. law. that means residents can continue to use a state-issued drivers license to board planes and enter federal buildings for a few more years. citizens were on the verge of cruising their passports instead because the state licenses are not up to speed with security enhancement. the governor signed the bill in time giving the state until 2020 to imply. pennsylvania is expected to have the technology to prints the new devices by 2019. >> a brand new rollercoaster is up and running by jersey shore just in time for the memorial
