for a fellow classmate. and good evening. thanks for joining us on this saturday, i'm tom llamas. and we begin tonight with breaking news. what appears to be a major police emergency at the london bridge. details just beginning to come in. it's still unclear exactly what happened, but it comes at a time when european cities are becoming more and more frequent targets for terrorists. england still reeling from the recent suicide bombing in manchester just two weeks ago. abc's jennifer eccleston with the very latest details. >> reporter: tom, this is still very much a developing story, with reports of a disturbing scene near london bridge, and now, also, at burough market, a restaurant nearby. eyewitnesses near the area are reporting a white van veering off the road and striking pedestrians. there is an enormous police response arriving at the scene within minutes, followed by

ambulances and police helicopters. >> shots getting fired and bang, bang, bang. but we just been bashed back by the police. >> there are people on the ground, everything looks -- so, i didn't see anything with my eyes, but my friend said, oh, there is a van, there is a van, and this van went into the people and then we saw three, four people living e lying on . and then the police arrived and the ambulance arrived. >> reporter: as you hear there, there are reports of injuries, bodies on the ground. police have only confirmed that they are responding to an incident at london bring and also at burough market. people are becoing told to leav the area, avoid the area.

eerily reminiscent of the westminster bridge attack that killed five people. tom, this happened just minutes ago, another tragedy, another reason for this country to be on edge. >> london and europe both on edge tonight. jennifer, talk to us about those two areas, so, london bridge, just west of the famous tower bridge in london, and then burough market, how far apart are they from each other, and were they busy, about 10:00 p.m. in london? >> reporter: they're very close to each other. they would be considered in the same, roughly the same neighborhood. very popular with locals. but also with tourists. london bridge, obviously, a huge attraction for people to come visit this country. people wanting to get their picture taken there, with the bridge in the background lit at night. but the burough market is teeming with people on a saturday night. it's full of restaurants and bars. >> jennifer eccleston reporting for us tonight. thank you, jennifer. we'll come back to you throughout the broadcast. we want to talk to somebody who was there tonight, an eye witness at a restaurant while this emergency was happening. he joins us on the phone right

now. what did you see and what did you hear tonight? >> well, i just heard, we were just around the corner from it, having dinner, just having dinner out with a few friends and my partner and literally all we hear is shots fired and quite loud bang. we ran to the windows, see lots of blue lights and police everywhere and look out of the window of our restaurant and we can see people lying on the floor and just ambulances and police response around them. the security of the restaurant is telling us to evacuate the restaurant, as quick as we can, the police are telling us to run up the road, further away from london bridge, and now we're currently sitting in a bar, just in a safe spot, we've been told there's security around, inside the perimeter here, and that's

all we know at the moment. they won't tell us anything apart from what we're seeing on social media. >> were you closer to the scene, there's two incidents, one at london bridge and one at the burr burough market. >> i was just having dinner across the road from the market. and my car is parked just outside burough market and i can't even get to it. >> and the massive police presence you see on the scene, do you also see police still kind of running in and out, does it seem like the scene has been contained or is it still very much an active investigation? >> it looks like it's very much active, but i think the police are doing a very quick job to get everything -- to get it responded to, as quick as possible. they're trying to do their hardest and it looks like they are trying to clear up the road and get everything contained as quickly as possible, which, i'm sure, is what everybody wants.

>> all right, one of the eye witnesses tonight to those incidents in london, and we of course will stay on top of this story throughout the broadcast and update you as we get more information. next, we want to move on now to the growing outrage here at home over the racial slur on a live television show. talk show host bill maher using a derogatory, highly charged racial expression in conversation with a republican senator, ben sasse of nebraska. now, that senator facing heat for what he didn't say. march's apology tonight and his employer, the hbo network, weighing in as the calls to fire him are growing. here's abc's ron claiborne. >> reporter: tonight, the aftershocks of the racial slur said on live tv. in the middle of a seemingly harmless exchange between bill maher and nebraska senator ben sasse. >> i've got to get to nebraska more. >> you're welcome. we'd love to have you work in the fields with us. >> work in the fields? >> that's part of -- >> senator. i'm a house [ bleep ].

no, it's a joke. >> reporter: a torrent of criticism was unleashed at the comedian, whose brand is being politically acerbic and outrageous. deray mckesson, a black lives matter activist, tweeting, "bill maher has got to go. there's no explanations that make this acceptable." tara sutmeyer, a political analyst, is a frequent guest on maher's shows. >> i think it was an unfortunate remark that he thought would be a funny joke that went wrong on the fly. and it was inappropriate. and i thought to myself, oh, my goodness, did he just say that? >> reporter: hbo rebroadcast the show before pulling it from the air. in a statement, the cable network said, "bill maher's comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless." and today, from sasse, a republican who, in the past, has criticized some of president trump's more incendiary tweets, he says he now wishes he would have said, "hold up, why do you think it's okay to use that word?" maher releasing this written statement of apology -- "friday nights are

always my worst night of sleep, because i'm up reflecting on the things i should or shouldn't have said on my live show. last night was a particularly long night as i regret the word i used in the banter of a live moment. the word was offensive and i regret saying it and am very sorry." >> ron joins us now live, and ron, bill maher apologizing, but this is not the first time he's gotten into trouble for saying somethings controversial on the air. >> reporter: that's right. remember, just after 9/11, he accused the u.s. military of being cowardly in launching attacks on the taliban in afghanistan. about nine months later, his show the "politically incorrect" was canceled. so far, hbo condemning his words but he's not been suspended or fired so far. >> so many talking about this story tonight, as well. all right, ron, thank you so much. now, to another major breaking headline. the major concession by president trump on climate change. he called it on more than one occasion a hoax, but tonight, the administration saying the president does believe that the climate is changing. the dramatic switch coming on the heels of global criticism of

the president's decision to pull out of the paris climate accord. abc's gloria riviera reports. >> reporter: tonight, after denying climate change on the campaign trail -- >> so, obama is talking about all of this with the global warming and the -- a lot of it is a hoax. >> reporter: president trump's administration making a stunning reversal. >> president trump believes the climate is changing and he believes pollutants are part of that e case so, that is the fact. >> reporter: just a day ago, the head of the epa couldn't respond to a direct question. >> yes or no. does the president believe that climate change is real and a threat to the united states? >> you know, what's interesting about all the discussions we had through the last several weeks have been focused on one singular issue -- is paris good or not for this country? >> reporter: since trump pulled out of the paris accord, at least 80 mayors and 100 business leaders pledging to stay the course. >> and we will meet our targets. >> reporter: former new york city mayor michael bloomberg meeting with france's president

obstruction of justice. >> and david wright joining us live from the white house. david, we've been monitoring that emergency situation in london, and we've just learned that the president has been briefed on the incident? >> reporter: that's right. press secretary sean spicer says the president has received an initial briefing and he'll continue to receive updates throat the night from his national security team. remember, had e's had some strong words to say on other recent attacks in the uk, calling the prerp tray torps of the attack in manchester evil losers. tom? >> the white house monitoring the two incidents in london. david, thank you. now, to the wild shootout at a gas station in texas. three officers wounded when a gunman opened fire. drivers desperate to get away. abc's eva pilgrim picks up the story with the late details. >> reporter: a barrage of bullets flying as a manhunt for a murder suspect ends in that terrifying and deadly scene. bystanders running for cover inside a convenience store, as gun shots rang out in laredo,

texas, late friday afternoon. police saying 55-year-old antonio gerardo rodriguez opened fire on police. here, once officer takes cover, firing back. police had been searching for rodriguez, a suspect in his girlfriend's murder. her body found at their apartment earlier that morning. authorities pulled into this gas station after spotting his car. a witness catching the moment authorities say he fired at police. police officers seen here in this video approaching their target. drivers finding themselves in the cross fire, desperate to get away. three officers seriously wounded in the shootout, one of them critically. rodriguez, killed in the exchange. >> we prepare for it, we train for it, but we're not truly ready for it until you encounter this. >> reporter: no bystanders were hurt in the shootout. those officers are all in the hospital recovering. tom? >> all right, eva, thank you so much. and we're learning more tonight about the deadly casino rampage in the philippines that killed more than three dozen
