former fbi director over who is telling the truth. in his first public appearance since being fired by president trump, james comey accused the white house of lying about him and lying about the fbi. >> the administration then chose to defame me and, more importantly, the fbi by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader. those were lie, plain and simple. >> reporter: and comey left no doubt about why he believes he was fired. >> it's my judgment that i was fired because of the russia investigation. i was fired in some way to change or the endeavor was to change the way the russia investigation was being conducted. that is a very big deal. >> reporter: comey's testimony left president trump uncharacteristically speechless. >> thank you all very much. thank you. >> mr. president, any reaction to comey's testimony? any reaction at all. >> thank you very much.

>> do you think he told the truth? the response came instead from his personal lawyer who issued a direct challenge to comey accusing comey of lying under oath. >> the president never suggested that mr. comey, quote, let flynn go, closed quote. the president likewise never pressured mr. comey. the president also never told mr. comey, quote, i need loyalty, i expect loyalty, closed quote. >> reporter: he keyed in on comey's acknowledgement he asked a friend to leak his memos to "the new york times" describing his private conversations with the president. >> my judgment was i needed to get that out into the public square and so i asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. didn't do it myself for a variety of reasons but asked him to because i thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel. >> reporter: kasowitz suggested it could be comey in legal jeopardy. >> we will leave it to the

appropriate authorities to determine whether these leaks should be investigated along with all the others that are being investigated. >> reporter: but amidst a he said/he said one thing they agree. president trump was not under fbi investigation. >> i gather from all of in that you're willing to say now that while you were director the president of the united states was not under investigation. is that a fair statement? >> that's correct. >> so that's a fact we can rely on. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: of course, that doesn't mean he's not under investigation now. the truth about the contested conversations may come down to tapes which trump tweeted may exist. tapes comey and many others in congress now say they'd like to hear. >> i've seen the tweet about tape, lordy, i hope there are tapes. >> reporter: the white house still will not say whether or not those tapes or any recordings of the president's conversations with comey actually exist. but you can bet that the president and his team will be asked that question over and

over again until there is an answer. amy. >> all right, jon karl, thanks so comey's testimony raised and left many questions unanswered. for those investigating russia and the trump campaign our senior justi cpierre thomas joi. pierre, comey certainly seemed like a man on a mission. what happens next? >> reporter: with simmering but blistering focus he laid out his deep concerns over what he felt was e was an attempt by president trump to alter the russian investigation by firing him. he never trusted him documents each encounter with the president right after they talked and said yesterday that he's given those memos to special counsel bob mueller. ottom line, he wants mr. trump trump face increasing scrutiny, the source telling abc news the senate intelligence committee i kushner later this month. quite a showdown unfolding, amy. >> thanks so much, pierre. george. >> okay, amy, thanks here with corey lewandowski former trump

campaign manager now an outside adviser to the white house and presidentr morning. you know, we saw the president's tweet. he said basically that james comey was lying yesterday, had . you said he is a liar all the time, james comey. the president could prove this if he releases tapes. will he? >> i don't know if tapes. you know how the system works. >> no, every president is different but you know president trump. >> i don't know if there is a tape inside. the president has said maybe there is, maynow if there is or isn't. i don't work in the building. not yesterday when james comey was testifying, but when he was the director of the fbi he made repeated o back and clarify afterwards and he made the same -- misstatement and lie. hold on a second. first of all -- if you don't sa it's a lie. >> when you make a mistake you make a mistake. you're an adviser to the white house and spent

white house. this is a major issue of contention, does the president have tapes. if ynot? >> look, i don't work for the white house. i worked for the campaign. i have no formal role in thew w- >> how do you know if the president is telling the truth. >> i don't know if there are tapes. what we know for sure what jim comey said yesterday the president has never been under . if you look at what marco rubio said it was the only -- >> you believe james comey when he said the president was not under investigation. you don't believe him when he says the president asked you don't believe james comey when he says that in a meeting in the oval office with the pr the flynn investigation go. >> what i don't believe is jim comey who is the director of the fbi for the last five years say president asked me to do something, i didn't know what to do. i wasn't qualified basically he said to call the attorney general, to call the white hous attorney general. this is the director of the fbi.

and he was so shell-shocked, stunned, if you will that the president asked him to, hey, let it go potentially. i hope this goes away and what he said yesterday under congressional testimony was nobody has ever been tried or convicted of hoping for something. >> he swore under oath that was the truth. he told people at the time that was the story. he wrote contemporary in his notes at the time and he was actually asked yesterday why should we believe you and not president trump? here was his answer. you have to look at the whole testimony. >> you can't cherry-pick it and say i like these things he said but on this he's a dirty rotten liar. you got to take it all together and i've tried to be open and fair and transparent and accurate. a really significant fact to me is so why did he kick everybody out of the oval office? why would you kick the attorney general, the president, the chief of staff out to talk to me if it was about something else? and so that to me is -- as an investigator is a very fact. >> that is a pretty big question.

why did the president kick everyone out of the office. >> jim comey is the one -- >> answer this question first. answer that -- hold on a second. don't ask me another question. >> because jim comey opened the door on january 6th for a private conversation and said he'd like to brief you directly privately in trump tower. that was the normal course of business. why wouldn't the president have a personal private conversation with jim comey after jim comey originally asked for those private meetings. >> that was a private meeting back in january about the dossier because it was a sensitive personal matter. that was a spraeparate meeting february, february 14th, the attorney general was there, the vice president was there, jared kushner was there. the president asked them all to leave. why did he ask them to leave? >> maybe he wanted to have a conversation with jim comey directly. what i do know -- >> about michael flynn. >> jim comey testified yesterday under oath that he knew that jeff sessions was going to recuse himself. how did he know that? because he testified to -- >> he didn't say he knew that. hold on.

he said i believe that. he believed it would be inevitable based on information he received as fbi director. >> here's what we know, on march 1th, carol lee of "the wall street journal" wrote a story published and said there was fbi hand-wringing and no formal process for the attorney general to be recused from an investigation other than public pressure. >> how do you know what the president is saying is true? >> look, how do we know it is not true? here's what we know, two people are in the room, the director of the fbi and president of the united states. what we also know is that if the director of the fbi thought a crime was committed, meaning he was asked to obstruct justice by the president of the united states under 18 u.s. code section 4 he has an obligation, not only an obligation, a duty to report that to either the white house counsel, the attorney general, or the associated attorney general of the united states. he did none of those things and if he doesn't do that and knowingly conceals information of a crime, that is a felony punishable by three years in jail. >> james comey said that right

now he has turned everything over to the special counsel. >> did he turn over to the special counsel or the media. what he admitted he's the leaker. he is the deep state in washington that is everything is wrong. he admitted under oath that he gave his contemporaneous notes to a law professor. if that what he has done and continues to do this, if this is his pattern as the fbi director he absolutely should have been fired and if he is the chronic leaker he should be prosecuted. >> you think he should be prosecuted. a special counsel has been appointed. he now has the memos from those meetings with james comey so even though the president wasn't under investigation before he's very likely is under investigation now. >> he's absolutely not under investigation. james comey testified yesterday and he's only been removed from the fbi for less than two weeks, three weeks, that at that time candidate trump was never under investigation, president-elect trump was never under investigation. is it possible under some

strange scenario since he last an investigation has started. it's possible. highly unlikely. >> isn't that why the president has a personal lawyer. >> no, that's what everybody does. that's what the clintons did. they brought in lanny davis to take care of all their problems, right? you were there. you remember it. >> i actually wasn't there at that time. final question, james comey answered these questions under oath. is the president prepared to answer these questions under oath as well. >> look, the president has no obligation to answer anything. what we do know he has said time and time again to reiterate the president has never been under fbi investigation and james comey testified to that yesterday. >> corey lewandowski, thanks very much. >> my pleasure. that was recorded just moments ago. i'm here with dan abrams. our chief political analyst matthew dowd and you saw, dan, let me begin with you. corey lewandowski pretty much doubled down accusing james comey of perjury. the president used the word lies this morning as well. this is now almost certainly in the office of the special counsel. he'll be asking the questions now and big question is who will he find more credible and do the president's actions add up to obstruction of justice. >> that was a heck of an

interview but in the question of obstruction of justice, i think if you were to ask james comey, what do you think, he would say, that when i was directed to end part of the flynn investigation, i didn't think it was obstruction of justice at that point. even until the time i was fired, i didn't think it rose to that level. but i think if you were to ask james comey in a private moment what do you think now? i think he would say the fact that i was fired over the russia investigation in an effort, i think comey believes, to affect the russia investigation, that may then cross over into obstruction of justice according to james comey. i think that was clear from his testimony and it is clear from his testimony that he believes that mueller ought to be looking at that and i am confidence mueller will look at that. >> is it clear from these statements there are no tapes? >> i don't think there's any chance there were tapes. if there were tapes i think they could easily -- there's no ambiguity over whether tapes

exist. they either exist or don't exist. >> it's clear that the white house strategy will be scorched earth against james comey. >> can i just say that the president of the united states declaring that he was totally vindicated and is a winner, i think he has his results from price waterhouse cooper because the last time a mistaken winner was declared when "la la land" was declared winner of the oscars. i think right now the senate gop members are going to just keep defending the castle but one thing they're unwilling to do go out and be offensive. they're in a defensive crouch. >> thanks very much. much more sunday on "this week" right here on abc. amy. >> now to that breaking news from overseas, the results from britain's high-stakes election now in and abc's james longman is outside parliament with the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, amy. yes, this was something of a disaster for theresa may, the british prime minister. they still have the largest party in parliament but they

videos online of her exploits. >> yes. >> reporter: but in court thursday in augusta, georgia, federal prosecutors said winner harbored some very dark thoughts. they said fbi agents seized a handwritten note at her home that said, i want to burn down the white house. all this from someone who has a government contractor had access to the country's most closely guarded secrets. at this facility for the nsa, the national security agency. >> contractors typically have top secret security clearance but they're not subject to continuous monitoring by the agency. >> reporter: prosecutors say winner told her mother in a phone call, mom, i screwed up. they know about the documents. but told her family she would hide her real thoughts by playing the role of a pretty white cute girl who would braid her hair and cry. and prosecutors said she claimed to have actually coached her parents in the phone calls to play the sympathy card as in this interview with our station wsb. >> she offered up her life for

this nation. and to see her treated so violent is an insult to every person who ever wore a uniform. >> reporter: winner pleaded not guilty and remains behind bars but she's getting prominent support from fellow leaker edward snowden and comedian rosie o'donnell who gave her go fund me page $1,000 and called her a brave, young patriot. >> thank you, brian. we'll make a turn to scare are video and big scare for a woman in new jersey and here she is walking while texting. >> oh, gosh in all of a sudden she falls right through that open cellar door. several people saw her fall and rushed to call 911. firefighters were there within minutes but it took a while to get her out. the woman is in the hospital. she's in stable condition and she's expected to be okay and more than a thousand people a year get hurt like this. >> wow, that is so frightening. it's a wake-up call. >> scary video and good lesson

weekend. temperatures nearing 100 degrees. we begin this half hour with bill cosby's words heard in court for the first time in his sexual assault trial excerpts from past interviews and depositions were read to the jurors and abc's linsey davis is at the courthouse in norristown, pennsylvania, with all of those details for us, good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, amy. we've heard the she said. now we're starting to hear the he said. bill qods's version of events. one thing the jurors heard yesterday when a portion of the deposition was read aloud in court yesterday was cosby saying that when andrea and her mother started questioning him about what kind of pills he gave to andrea he says he never ended up telling them because he was starting to feel attacked. for the first time jurors are hearing bill cosby's side of the story. but not from him directly. excerpts from a 2005 police interview transcript were read to them by a pennsylvania police sergeant. cosby's responses about his

relationship with andrea constand drastically differ from her account of their interactions. just one day earlier she detailed being drugged and sexually assaulted by the comedian at his home back in 2004 but cosby told police in order to relax her, he gave constand 1 1/2 pills of benadryl not the three blue pills she described and the sergeant read aloud this q&a about the night of the alleged assault. did she tell you to stop? no. did she push you away, no. why did the petting stop. >> i never intended to have sexual intercourse. we were petting. i enjoyed it. we stopped and then i went up to bed. while she told jurors she considered cosby a mentor, cosby said they engaged in petting at least four types and only asked him to stop once. victoria valentino spoke outside of court. >> i'm one of his victims and i know better. he uses that as an excuse.

he has a pattern of behavior that is consistent throughout all of us 60 women. >> reporter: jurors also listened intently as a detective started reading graphic excerpts from the deposition cosby baf in 2005 where he explained why he gave andrea pills. the reason i gave them to andrea is that she was talking about stress, i wanted her to be comfortable and to go to sleep after we had our necking session. with regard to the one night he says constand stopped him cosby said she doesn't say to me don't ever do that again. i think i'm a pretty good reader of people in these romantic situations. one headline that has dogged bill cosby since the start of this time is the absence of his wife of 53 years camille cosby. abc news has learned that mrs. cosby does plan to attend this trial and that she certainly supports her husband. amy. >> all right, linsey, thanks so much. veteran felony prosecutor nancy grace joins us with more. nancy, we just heard that

reporting from linsey. does it impact whether camille cosby is sitting in that courtroom or not? >> oh, it absolutely will impact the jury. i have tried felony cases both ways, with and without the victim's family or friends or supporters present in the courtroom. it means a lot the jury to turn around and look out in that courtroom and see who is or who is not supporting the defendant. it would give the impression that camille cosby does not believe her husband and that she's angry over this felony prosecution. i have always suspected that she will show up during the defense case. to make her not the center of attention as the state is unfolding a very, very difficult case for her to hear. >> let's talk about the state's case. we heard from cosby in past interviews and depositions. we know he's not going to take the stand himself but talk about what the impact was, how the

prosecution did with those excerpts? >> they did really well and, of course, the defense can't, i believe, has leaked rumblings that cosby may take the stand. he's not going to take the stand. he would be sliced up like a thanksgiving turkey on a silver platter on cross-examination. i imagine if they did leak that, it would be to throw off the state so they'd have to scurry the night before to prepare a cross-examination for cosby instead of focusing and honing in on what they've got to do. now, the jury has heard his story, not by him, of course, he's not taking the stand but through prior statements about constand. but today i predict they are going to hear his 2005 deposition on his practice of giving prescriptions, of quaaludes, quaaludes and giving them to other women to then take advantage of them, have sex with them. you know, here's the crux of it.

when you don't know a horse, look at his track record. we don't know exactly what happened that night with andrea constand, but by his own admission, we know his track record, right? >> yeah, you're hearing it from the horse's mouth literally. >> yes, exactly. and there's no two ways to interpret it because he is saying it and you know another thing about prior victims, all these alleged 60 plus victims of cosby's, we're not going to hear from them but we did hear from one, kelly johnson and it brought to mind the dichotomy of rape victim, i've had them on the stand just break down sobbing, bending over where they couldn't even speak and then the other night pair for a prosecutor where they freeze up and they can't say anything and we've had kind of a mix of the two of those and the jair has seen all of this. >> well, some very dramatic testimony today in the case. we appreciate your time, nancy

she would argue in the fog of war, it's much more complicated than that. so many people call you a traitor. many call you a hero. >> right. >> who is chelsea manning? >> so, i'm just me. it's as simple as that. >> reporter: yet the story she's sharing this morning for the first time is far more complex. the world first heard about her as bradley manning in 2010 when the army intelligence analyst was charged with leaking the largest trove of government secrets in u.s. history. do you feel as though you owe the american public an apology. >> i've accepted responsibility. no one told me to do this. nobody directed me to do this. this is me. it's on me. >> reporter: it was images like in that manning says compelled her to go to wikileaks. american soldiers carrying out an aerial attack on what ended being unarmed civilians including children, among the dead two reuters journalists. >> oh, yeah, look at that, right through the windshield.

>> reporter: but the military denied her request for hormones, fighting for her right to transition so daunting she says she tried to commit suicide twice which led to time in solitary confinement. >> why was it so important to you to fight for hormone treatments while you were behind bars. >> it keeps me from feeling like i'm in the wrong body and like -- i get these horrible -- used to get niece horrible feelings like i want to rip my body apart. >> reporter: the army ultimately granted her request and five months ago after seven years in prison a gift from a parting president. clemency. >> i feel very comfortable that just cyst has been served. >> reporter: you haven't spoken to president obama. what would you say to him if you could? >> thank you. for giving me a chance. that's all i wanted. >> wanted a chance. >> that's all i asked for was a chance, that's it. and this is my chance.

>> reporter: even though president obama commuted manning's sentence it was not a pardon and yet the seven years she served was already longer than any other leaker in u.s. history. but her fight is not over. she is appealing her case with lawyers from the aclu and support from amnesty international who object to her months in solitary confinement saying she has more than paid. >> that's the point president obama made. you did a lot of interviews and the intelligence community is still upset. >> absolutely and the portrait that emerges is a very complex character. she is a millennial who likes fashion. she has hundreds of thousands of fans on social media but she has those detractors in the intelligence community who say the bottom line even if she was trying to expose wrongdoing she should have gone up the chain of command because there's no way of knowing the long-term impact of those leaks. >> what did she say about the seven years behind bars, what it was really like for her. >> i think she said before she got hormone treatment it was despair. she attempted suicide twice
