ambushed by a gunman. at least five people were shot including one of the highest republicans in the house. at this hour a motive is still unclear. >> it is wednesday night and the big story on "action news" is the early morning shooting just outside of the nation's capital. >> this is the man identified as the shooter, 66-year-old james hodgkinson of illinois. he opened fire on a group of congressman practicing for a charity baseball game. and steve scalise from louisiana is currently in critical condition a congressional aide a lobbyist and two capital police officers. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle is calling for a show of bipartisan support at tomorrow's game. today president trump praised the the quick actions of scalise's security detail that helped to take down the shooter. >> in lives would have been lost

>> david muir anchors a special edition of world news from washington tonight and has more on the baseball practice ambush right after "action news" at 6:00. now to the latest on the bill cosby trial it's nearly 4 hours since the jury is handed the case and still no verdict. >> in just the past 30 minutes the jury indicated another question about the decision at hand and jim gardner is live outside of the montgomery county courthouse where anticipation continues to build tonight. >> good evening monica, and there are only so many ways you can say we continue to await a verdict here. suffice it to say the jury is deliberating 23 hours not including dinner and lunch breaks since it got the case at 5:45 monday afternoon. "action news" cameras were rolling this morning as bill cosby arrived here. he spent most of this day with his attorneys in a guarded room here.

except when he is called into the courtroom when the jury has a question and they have had several of those. most recently just a few minutes ago. chad pradelli is live here with me. and chad has been keeping track of all the goings on at the courthouse. what is the latest only the questions. >> relatively quiet morning here within the last couple of hours jurors have two questions for the judge we know one, and we don't know the last question this jury has for the judge, we have a reporter inside of the courtroom and she is not allowed to leave to relay that to us. so far no verdict. >> bill cosby gave the thumbs up when he walked into court and the jury has not produced a verdict and the jurors had another question for the judge asking to hear the testimony of the alleged assault and brian mcmongal and the da kevin steele

talked behind closed doors and her testimony was read back to jurors. and cosby spokesman andrew wyatt emerged from the courtroom and talked to the media. >> mr. cosby has not given an opinion per se, but it seems like we have intelligent jurors on the jury that wants to get the facts right. that is what is important right now. >> day three of of the deliberations was cooler than day two. and the crowd grows impatient waiting for a verdict. speculations of a hung jury grows and gloria allred represents several of the alleged victim of the comedian. >> they constantly check in what is happening? and what we predict what might happen and when will it end? we can't answer any of those questions. >> again, the latest here from the montgomery county courthouse, the jury in the cosby trial has yet another

the day we celebration the adoption of the u.s. flag. today marks 240 years since the flag was adopted in 1777 and to celebrate the american museum of the revolution produced a museum flag with the help of museum visitors they could make one stitch each on it's main flag and make their own flag a six pointed flag like the one george washington's flag it or make ones on display at the museum. visitors at sesame place were greeted with a smile from members of our military and an american flag. 2,000 flags were handed out in all. sesame place has invited the military men and women to give out the flags on this day for more than a decade. >> the last day of school for children was extra fun because of a special visitor.

"action news" at 5:00 continues now you are taking a live look as we await a press conference with fbi officialed. into the shooting of congressman steve scalise and four others during the congressional baseball team practice it morning. one that starts we'll bring it to you live. here is what we know so far. congressm congressman scalise is out of surgery and in critical condition. the gunman, james hodgkinson apparently asked what the team affiliation was before the gun fire started. he lives in illinois and is a volunteer for bernie sanders's
