ambushed by a gunman. at least five people were shot including one of the highest republicans in the house. at this hour a motive is still unclear. >> it is wednesday night and the big story on "action news" is the early morning shooting just outside of the nation's capital. >> this is the man identified as the shooter, 66-year-old james hodgkinson of illinois. he opened fire on a group of congressman practicing for a charity baseball game. and steve scalise from louisiana is currently in critical condition a congressional aide a lobbyist and two capital police officers. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle is calling for a show of bipartisan support at tomorrow's game. today president trump praised the the quick actions of scalise's security detail that helped to take down the shooter. >> in lives would have been lost

if not for the two capital police officers that took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault. >> "action news" anchor walter perez spoke to two local republicans that were on the baseball team this were attacked today. live at the scene in alexandria, virginia with more. >> reporter: that baseball field is behind me here in alexandria, and as you mentioned two local lawmakers are on the charity team practicing today one squeezed in his practice yesterday and one missed his ride. the shortstop for the team is ryan costello, he was suppose to be at practice but missed the 6:00 a.m. shuttle by two mines. >> if i was two minutes quicker with my life at 6:00 a.m. i would have been at shortstop with the third base man and second base man and the shooter firing shots at us. he was back in his office

catching up for the day when the news broke. >> i heard on the television baseball practice shooting congress and i looked up and it was the practice field we play at. >> congressman costello is not the only local lawmaker on the team. patrick meehan pitches for the gop and was not in the pitchi i cages this morning. >> there were four of us gathered in the cage and for the grace of god you don't know at a particular moment when something might happen. >> they are heart broken for the victims and families and pleased that the alleged gunman did not get away and expressed concern that political debate is moving further from ideas and into the realm of resentment. >> i am a human being with a wife and child and people can disagree with me that is fine. we are all here with a public responsibility and people may

"action news" cameras were rolling this morning as bill cosby arrived here. he spent most of this day with his attorneys in a guarded room here.

except when he is called into the courtroom when the jury has a question and they have had several of those. most recently just a few minutes ago. chad pradelli is live here with me. and chad has been keeping track of all the goings on at the courthouse. what is the latest only the questions. >> relatively quiet morning here within the last couple of hours jurors have two questions for the judge we know one, and we don't know the last question this jury has for the judge, we have a reporter inside of the courtroom and she is not allowed to leave to relay that to us. so far no verdict. >> bill cosby gave the thumbs up when he walked into court and the jury has not produced a verdict and the jurors had another question for the judge asking to hear the testimony of the alleged assault and brian mcmongal and the da kevin steele

talked behind closed doors and her testimony was read back to jurors. and cosby spokesman andrew wyatt emerged from the courtroom and talked to the media. >> mr. cosby has not given an opinion per se, but it seems like we have intelligent jurors on the jury that wants to get the facts right. that is what is important right now. >> day three of of the deliberations was cooler than day two. and the crowd grows impatient waiting for a verdict. speculations of a hung jury grows and gloria allred represents several of the alleged victim of the comedian. >> they constantly check in what is happening? and what we predict what might happen and when will it end? we can't answer any of those questions. >> again, the latest here from the montgomery county courthouse, the jury in the cosby trial has yet another

question that is number six for these deliberations which is now on its 25th hour. >> thank you chad. i am joined by sara bloomquist and sara i'm sure you will agree that the only thing in greater supply than news crews is opinions. some knowledgeable and some not. >> we have been out here for three days, trying to figure out what the jury is thinking and they are deliberating three charges but each is a little bit different. one addresses consent and the next whether cosby gave constand drugs and whether cosby -- and this is all or nothing. no compromise verdict, guilty on all three or not guilty on all three. or hung jury.

the day we celebration the adoption of the u.s. flag. today marks 240 years since the flag was adopted in 1777 and to celebrate the american museum of the revolution produced a museum flag with the help of museum visitors they could make one stitch each on it's main flag and make their own flag a six pointed flag like the one george washington's flag it or make ones on display at the museum. visitors at sesame place were greeted with a smile from members of our military and an american flag. 2,000 flags were handed out in all. sesame place has invited the military men and women to give out the flags on this day for more than a decade. >> the last day of school for children was extra fun because of a special visitor.

"action news" at 5:00 continues now you are taking a live look as we await a press conference with fbi officialed. into the shooting of congressman steve scalise and four others during the congressional baseball team practice it morning. one that starts we'll bring it to you live. here is what we know so far. congressm congressman scalise is out of surgery and in critical condition. the gunman, james hodgkinson apparently asked what the team affiliation was before the gun fire started. he lives in illinois and is a volunteer for bernie sanders's

presidential campaign. hodgkinson had a valid gun permit and they said that hodgkinson hid in the dugout with an automatic weapon and ammo and started shooting. congressman scalise was fielding at the time was hit in the hip. he is the whip and travels with a detail includingcal tap police officers. during the melee two officers were struck by gun fire along with a congressional aid and lobbyist for tyson foods. hodgkinson was shot and killed. >> i was up to bat when the shooting occurred organ. heard what i thought was a loud bang, i thought it was a construct site and heard run he has a gun. >> our own walter perez is in alexandria, virginia, gathering the latest on the shooting and

illinois. he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and the d.c. medical examiner issued the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. the fbi has issued a seeking information poster, identifying the shooter and can be found at fbi.gov. while the subject is deceased we continue to actively investigate the shooter's motives acquaintances and whereabouts that led to today's incidents. >> we'll continue to have presence as we process a scene here in alexandria and fbi agents are searching the shooter's home in belleville, illinois. the subject's vehicle was located on scene and has been swept by alexandria pd and atf

and we'll be process with the fbi recovery team as well. we are looking to glean what we can from the contents of the electrical devices he owns >> law enforcement has reason to believe that the shooter has been in alexandria, virginia since march of this year. the fbi has issued again seeking information poster located on our website asking the public to come forward with information on the shooter. to the local alexandria community we believe he was living out of his vehicle at east monroe street. and ask you to report any interactions you had with him. and likewise the subject

well london is dealing with yet another tragedy less than two weeks after a deadly terror attack. a deadly fire ripped through a high rise apartment as people slept. 12 people are dead but that number is expected to rise. molly hunter is at the scene with the latest. >> all 24 stories ravaged home to some 264 people scorched by the fire that raged. it engulfed the entire tower within 30 minutes. >> there was smoke literally everywhere. people downstairs people screaming -- >> fast moving flames and thick

smoke trapped people inside. >> what floor are you on? seven? >> firefighters arriving on the scene in six minutes they were blocked by the heat and falling debris. >> in my 29 years in the london fire brigade i have never seen a fire of this nature. >> people doing anything to stay alive. people jumping out and tying sheets to get out of the building and falling to the floor. >> and people jumped because they had no other option. >> how high up? >> the top floor gl this man and his family made it out safely. >> there was a fireman going get out, get out. many rushes to the scene looking for missing friends and relatives. >> i'm looking for my brother. >> it was total chaos and this nephew and cousin are still unaccounted for. >> they don't know what started the fire. >> it will take a period of time
