terrifying moments right here on "gma" and congress vowing to play that game tonight in front of thousands. and good morning, america. first pitch at that congressional baseball game will be tonight. a live look at nationals park. that's where the lawmakers have promised the game will go on, playing in honor of the victims of yesterday's shooting and robin will speak to one of the congressional staffers shot in a moment. >> you also sat down with gabby giffords. >> yes. >> as well. >> of course, she was the last one, the last victim of congressional violence, the former congresswoman and she and her husband have a great message of unity for both sides of the aisle. >> new developments overnight. what we know, the gunman has been identified as 66-year-old james hodgkinson from illinois. he was shot and killed by police. and authorities are now poring over his social media accounts filled with posts attacking

president trump and republicans including congressman steve scalise. scalise, a republican from louisiana is one of six people injured in wednesday's ambush. he remains in critical condition. >> last night as we told you president trump and the first lady visited scalise at the hospital. the president tweeted that scalise is very tough, is in very tough shape but he is a real fighter. >> he is that. we have team coverage this morning. amy on the scene in alexandria, virginia, with new details about those terrifying moments on the field. good morning, amy. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. you know, it was almost this exact time of day yesterday when in a matter of moments this field here behind me went from a group of congressmen who were gearing up practicing for their big game tonight to an unthinkable, horrifying scene. [ gunfire ] shots ringing out on what was a quiet morning at the ball field. the team practicing early. at least 20 republican congressmen preparing for their annual charity baseball game

against the democrats. >> i thought was a construction site dropping a very large piece of metal and then the neck thing i heard was run, he's got a gun. >> reporter: the lone gunman sending a bullet into the left hip of louisiana congressman and republican house majority whip, steve scalise. the bullet crossing scalise's pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding. the congressman undergoing surgery immediately. this morning, he is in critical condition and will need additional operations. >> shots being fired and there are people running, possibly victims involved. >> reporter: the gunman, 66-year-old james t. hodgkinson beginning his rampage behind a fence between home plate and the third base dugout. scalise shot while playing second base, team members taking cover in the first base dugout. >> i poked my head up behind the fence but still had a line of fire into the dugout. >> reporter: you saw him right before he took that initial first shot. >> i imagine i saw him just before he shot scalise, but i

had turned by that point because i heard get in the dugout. >> reporter: marty lavor, a photographer watched it all unfold. at what point did you realize someone is shooting at us? >> i saw scalise on the ground but i heard it. a weapon that goes, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. >> get down. >> reporter: scalise's security detail quickly jumping in. exchanging fire with the shooter. >> we got one in custody. we need medics, total of five down. >> reporter: by 7:14 the gunman is dead and the scene scattered with abandoned equipment and left bullet ridden. at least one shattering the window of this nearby yahoo! >> sitting ducks. i mean, we had no -- we had nothing to fight back with but bats. >> reporter: the team's manager joe barton was at practice with his two sons including 10-year-old jack. >> he had 25 dads, everybody out there was looking out for him.

>> reporter: the gunman shooting four people with two others hurt with secondary injuries including the two capitol police officers now hailed as heroes. >> without them there, this would have been a massacre of major proportions of innocent men, women and children at a park that's peaceful at 6:30 in the morning. >> reporter: capitol hill photographer marty lavor told us how grateful he was for those brave police officers on the feel protecting the lives of all the men out here but he stressed to us he isn't just grateful for what they did yesterday but what they do every single day, putting their lives on the line for others. robin. >> all right, amy, thank you very much. and joining us now from washington are congressmen roger williams of texas who is a coach of the gop baseball team and his aide zach barth wounded by the shooter. so good to see both of you. zach, let me begin with you. you were shot in the leg so how are you feeling this morning,

zach? >> you know, i'm okay. the leg, the leg is going to be okay. the bullet went clean through and i'm, you know, honestly i'm blessed to be alive. it was a very scary moment but without, you know, agents blaaiy and griner it would have been much worse so blessed to have them on our team. >> you are so right about that, young man. congressman williams, when did you know that something was happening. where were you on the field? >> i hit the first ground ball to steve and all of a sudden we heard this pow and i originally thought like many that it was a car that might have backfired but then they started coming at a rapid pace and i did what i don't know why i did it but i went and ran into the dugout which is in the ground about six feet. i literally dove into the dugout and a lot of my colleagues were there and it wasn't but about a short period of time that zach

came in from the outfield and he jumped in there and we ended up holding each other along with flake and mo brooks and i think it was mo brooks that took his belt off and gave it to flake and myself to help slow the blood down on steve. i also want to say that without the capitol police we probably would not be here today. they did an unbelievable job and that blue line worked and i think that people across our country need to know how important they were and i think we owe everything to them. >> absolutely, sir. i'm glad that you said that. zach, how were you able to make it from the outfield having been shot? >> well, so i was in center field just shagging fly balls whenever the shooting began. i ran to right field and just hit the deck and at that point the shooter trained his rifle on me and everything around me just

started to pop. then i felt the bullet hit my leg. i decided that wasn't the place i needed to be. i was just a sitting duck out there. so i made a run down the right field line. third base line rather and ran into the dugout literally running for my life and at that point it was just all adrenaline. my fight or flight reflex just took me down. >> everyone in there was doing their best to help you and to stop the bleeding as congressman williams just said, but i know that congressman brooks said that he told you, you know, you've been shot and, zach, did you really respond, it's not a big deal? >> you know, in the moment, i was thinking mainly about just staying alive, just keep everybody's heads down and my -- clearly i was able to run on it so in the moment i thought it must not been that bad, but that i was able to just kind of get down there but i was really just trying to stay alive. i wasn't really thinking about the severity of my injuries at that moment. >> the response from the nation

has been overwhelming and i know that the game is going to go on and representative williams, just tell people why that is so important. >> well, i think it's important, speaker ryan called myself and joe barton and our colleague congressman doyle on the democratic side to see if we should play and all agreed we should for a lot of reasons. if we don't play the game, it's for charity, if we don't play the game that's been played 100 years we let these people that want to change the way we live in this country forever and we're not going to allow that to lap. when america gets punched, america punches back and we take days on, not off and this event goes to charity. i'm hoping that we'll have 50,000 in the stands so we need to play this game and it's the game of america, it's bipartisan. we're looking forward to playing it. and it's the right thing to do. >> well said, sir.

damn. >> reporter: last year's election he actively supported bernie sanders serving as a volunteer in the iowa primary to the senator's disgust. >> i am sickened by this despicable act. >> reporter: authorities till don't know what triggered his rampage at the baseball field. two years ago on his facebook page, hodgkinson commented on an editorial cartoon critical of congressman steve scalise. here's a republican that should lose his job. then on march 22nd this year hodgkinson wrote, trump is a traitor. trump has destroyed our democracy. it's time to destroy trump and company. two days later neighbors called police to say hodgkinson had fired off 50 shots into the air near his home. >> that's when we brought the little kids in and called the sheriff. >> reporter: the sheriff's report says no charges were brought. hodgkinson's gun was not seized because, they said, he had a valid illinois owner's i.d.

card. >> he said he would quit shooting and that he would actually take his gun to a gun range where it was safer. >> reporter: just a few days later, hodgkinson left for washington, living out of his truck, showering in the morning at the yahoo! in alexandria, just across the street from the baseball field. >> i could see things, you know, that was very visible that looked like he was living out of his gym bag as opposed to just clothes for the day. >> reporter: he was a regular at the pork barrel barbecue in alexandria remembered by bartenders as a creepy guy who spent long days drinking beer and watching golf on television. >> he was pretty short and not exactly a personable person. >> reporter: his wife told abc news she thought he was about to come home where failures of his failed life remained. his business had gone under and was cut off by city business

after strange behavior. >> going into the office, rivaling through a desk and then becoming loud and vocal and having to be told to leave. >> this morning the fbi still has a lot of questions about this crazed shooter. his motive, his weapon, his associates. asking anyone who knew him or even came across him to contact the fbi. george. >> okay, brian, thanks. more from pierre thomas and former fbi special agent brad garrett, welcome to you both. authorities doing a lot to track down his weapons. >> reporter: yeah, george, good morning, because hodgkinson apparently had no felony convictions he bought the weapons recovered in the shooting legally in illinois. the primary weapon is an sks assault-style rifle. police recovered a smith & wesson 9 millimeter pistol. the suspect also owned a shotgun. he apparently obtained a permit to carry a concealed weapon in the last two months. >> the profile of hodgkinson, fill it in pretty quickly.

>> exactly, george, a guy basically going downhill that everything is not working in life and what happens is when that happen, people then tend to externalize their anger and turns to rage and justify in their own mind to go harm the people they perceive caused them their grief. >> and a lot of these angry political posts are directed at president trump directed at steve scalise, directed at republicans, generally. but no threats in there so was there anything the fbi, secret service, anyone could have done ahead of time to stop this? >> i don't think so, george. i mean it's -- the first amendment is going to carry him through. if he made specific threats he was going to actually harm the president or somebody in congress or anyone, then perhaps someone could have moved on him but short of that, you can pretty much say what you want to say. >> and, pierre, a lot of questions now about congressional security. we know because steve scalise was a member of the leadership he had a security detail there and they made a huge difference

yesterday but now questions again about what rank and file members need. >> reporter: yeah, one thing we heard from the congressman yesterday is that it's typically only the leadership that gets a security detail when outside the grounds of the capitol. some say if it had not about for that it would have been much worse. i think we'll see congressmen expanding security when kong get gating outside capitol hill. leaders in the group are not. clearly they're a target in this reason where we've seen a series of unstable people showing up to the capitol or white house and doing everything from committing suicide or putting out weapons. >> big problem, pierre, brad, thanks very much. more on the baseball game and as you heard, it's an annual event to raise money for charity. pitting republicans against democrats, all for a good cause and tonight, the game will go on. let's go to abc's mary bruce at nationals park and, mary, we're seeing a real show of unity from members of both parties. >> reporter: michael, good morning, well, across this city a bipartisan show of force.

calls for unity and calls to tone down the divisive rhetoric. lawmakers i've talked with, many republicans on that field, say that this is their breaking point. that the vitriol has to change and tonight right here a show of unity at nationals park. the congressional baseball game is a go. democrats and republicans hope that by still playing they can send a message that americans do not back down from fear. now, many we have talked with say this is a washington tradition, this is a charity game and they feel that this will be a chance for lawmakers here to put aside those differences and tonight an opportunity to honor the wounded and also pay tribute to those heroes. michael, these stands are going to be packed tonight. >> we learned that both teams will wear special uniforms? >> reporter: yeah, both teams will be wearing jerseys from the louisiana state university, of course, in honor of louisiana congressman steve scalise and his beloved school. michael. >> all right, thank you, mary. okay, we move on to that major new development in the

russia investigation. special counsel robert mueller now investigating president trump for possible obstruction of justice. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has all the latest on that. good morning, cecilia. it has caught the eye of the president already. >> reporter: yeah, george, the white house said they wouldn't be talking about the special counsel but the president himself is tweeting about it this morning, take a look. this is in reference to that "washington post" story. here's what he tweeted. they made up a phony collusion with the russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. nice. so, the focus of the investigation had been the president's aides and their dealings with the russians but "the washington post" is now saying that special counsel robert mueller is looking into the president himself for possible obstruction of justice. former fbi director james comey just last week had testified that he told the president he was not under investigation. it seems that that change right after comey was fired but, george, a key question right now, did the president ask comey or others to back off of that russian investigation?

deliberating. revisiting key evidence as they try to decide his guilt or innocence with sexual assault. they have been deliberating since monday. and dennis rodman making headlines in north korea. he met with the supports minister and gave him a copy of president trump's book "the art of the deal." >> okay. we're going to get more now on yesterday's shooting. calls for unity after so much heightened political tension across the country. back to amy in alexandria for more on that. good morning, amy. >> reporter: george, good morning to you and it was a tragedy here yesterday, what happened on so many levels because the congressmen practicing on this field behind me were gearing up for that annual game where republicans and democrats come together to raise money for charity. now, many people are asking everyone in this country to channel that same spirit of unity.

in the midst of a fierce political climate -- >> i've never seen hatred like this. >> reporter: and the differences between the two parties seeming bigger than ever. >> i believe the american people have had it with stonewalling. >> i am not stonewalling. i am following the historic policies of the department of justice. >> reporter: experts are examining how angry discourse could be the spark plug for violence. >> the anger in our political rhetoric is something that's unprecedented and what elected officials need to understand is that their words can influence people who are predisposed to violence to conduct violent attacks. >> reporter: but in the wake of wednesday's shooting of republican representatives at a baseball practice, that rhetoric could be changing. >> we are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good. >> reporter: in a joint press conference announcing the congressional baseball game will go on as scheduled, leaders on

both sides of the aisle made it clear they want to work together to change the mood of the country. >> and when the leadership of this country is civil towards one another, maybe the public will start being civil towards one another too. >> reporter: and this is a very important reminder for everyone. as investigators continue to do what they do here in alexandria to put the pieces of this puzzle together, we still don't know what exactly it was that caused the shooter to snap here yesterday. george. >> no, we don't. amy, thanks very much. joined by two congressmen would witnessed the shooting at the practice yesterday. mo brooks of alabama and brad wenstrup. thank you for coming. congressman brooks, we'll begin with you. you were on the field taking batting practice at the time. just tell us what happened. >> well, i was on the third base side of home nature swinging two or three bats warping up getting ready to bat after congressman rodney davis, he was actually hitting and i heard this loud explosion, i turn around --

first i thought it was a car backfire or something like that and see a barrel of a gun that is 60, 70 feet probably perpendicular from third base just past the third base dugout sticking through or right up to -- next to the chain link fence that surrounded the field and upon closer inspection, i saw the whole gun and then i saw the shooter. he was headed -- he was aiming towards shortstop, second base, right field direction, perpendicular onto the field from the plane of the chain link fence then it occurred to me if i can see him if he turns his view 30 degrees to the right i'm only about 50, 60 feet away. no cover standing right open and all i had to defend myself with was a baseball bat which isn't going to do well against a rifle. >> congressman wenstrup, you're a battlefield surgeon in iraq and were able to get to congressman scalise relatively quickly and help treat him. tell us exactly what you did. >> well, once they had the

shooter down, i took off from my position. i was down along the right field line near the batting cages and ran out with a few other members including congressman brooks and started to assess his wound. i could tell he was hit in the hip and we took it down. i found the entry wound but i couldn't find an exit wound which had me greatly concerned but started putting pressure on the area, borrowed someone's belt to put even more pressure and then made sure that steve was okay, tried to get him hydration, he was able to drink. i was checking his consciousness, asked him to count to five. he was able to do that. but although it looked like we had the bleeding under control, extern externalally i was very concerned about what was taking place internally especially without finding an exit wound. >> what do you know about his condition now? >> well, mostly what i've heard and what i understand with this type of injury from experience, he's going to need what we call damage control. you want to stabilize him, find out where the bleeding is coming

from. you know, ultimately at some point you may need a vascular surgeon to repair vascular damage and orthopedic surgeon to repair bone damage and general surgeon if there's internal damage especially to organs so it's a matter of getting things under control making sure he's getting blood there really has not been a statement come out of hospital although i've been in touch with people and they're continuing to work on steve in what i consider to be a normal fashion for his injuries. >> that's good to hear and congressman brooks, you know, the game is going to go on tonight, a sign of resolve and unity in the wake of this. a lot of calls for unity and a spirit of family in the congressional chamber yesterday but there was after gabby giffords was shot, as well. how do you keep it alive this time? >> well, we're going to do the best we can. you know, it's a very challenging circumstance. we have some heated public policy issues, particularly with respect to health care but on a wider front than that and rather than follow up on that question, if you don't mind i want

everybody to know how thankful i was to have brad wenstrup there, i helped put a little bit of pressure on the wound but having a physician there on the field with us was extremely important and the comfort he gave to steve scalise telling him everything was going to be okay, those assurances i could not have given those so having brad there, a physician from cincinnati, ohio, area, that was a great relief and comfort to not only steve scalise but also to the rest of us who were trying to help steve as best we could. >> thank goodness for them and the capitol police as well. gentlemen, thank you both very much. >> michael. >> thank you, george. all right, thank you, george. as you said there were calls for unity and those calls are growing. take a look at this picture, an example of unity, just moments after the democrats' baseball team learned about the shooting they huddled together to pray. last night joe barton who was at the republicans' practice with his two sons were invited to a dinner held by the democrats team last night and we're told

support to the victims. twitter users sharing pictures of the star who appears to be wiping her eye. the cause of the fire killing at least 12 and injured at least 74 still unknown. some residents say they complained about the building's safety for years. >> the grenfell tower underwent a major refurbishment program about 2 1/2 years ago and we will need to look much more closely at how much of that corresponds to the cause of today's fire. >> reporter: the management company saying we will cooperate fully with all the relevant authorities in order to ascertain the cause of this tragedy. firefighters have been inside the building but he can't do a comprehensive search until its integrity has been assured. there is a lot of anger here. residents asking how something like this could have happened. michael. >> all right, thank you, james. a lot of questions to be answered and we're joined now by cal fire battalion chief mike mohler in riverside california. chief moellhlermoehler, thanks

joining us. if you live in a high-rise or apartment and the fire alarm goes off, what should you do? >> well, good morning, michael. thank you for having us. first i want to say our hearts and our prayers are with the family and loved ones affected about that tragedy. if you are hear a alarm regardless of whether you see smoke, fire, you need to evacuate that building and do it every time that alarm should sound. >> what if you're trying to leave your apartment, the door is warm and smoke coming in under the door what is your next step then? >> next step is if you have smoke coming under your door, if you have heat is to put a towel at the base of that door to call 911 and let them know exactly where you are, your apartment number, how many people are with you so emergency officials know exactly where you are in that structure. >> and chief mohlor, you say the number one mistake they make is

information about the condition of congressman scalise. doctors say he suffered serious internal injuries and requires even more surgery right now listed in critical condition. president trump visited his bedside and said that congressman scalise can in very tough shape but called him a fighter. the president and first lady delivered flowers and visited with capitol police officer crystal griner who is recovering in the hospital as well. she's seen here in a photo playing basketball. another victim, lobbyist matt mika is in critical condition shot in the chest. his family says he's passionate about baseball and was dedicated to the congressional game and as for the gunman here's what we know. neighbors back in illinois describe him as an angry man who fired shots outside his home alarming the neighborhood. he vented about republican, calling president trump a traitor and posting on facebook that congressman scalise should lose his job. hodgkinson had recently moved to northern virginia after losing his home inspection business and reportedly lived out of a van

often visiting a bar where people described him as creepy. officials say because he apparently had no felony convictions he was able to buy his guns legally back in illinois. and just a few moments ago here on "gma" congressman brad wenstrup described the shooter's rifle running out of ammo and emerging again to the scene with a handgun. that's when capitol police were able to take him out but this has reignited a debate on just how much security members of capitol hill should actually have. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle reporting that they have increased threats now and expect more to come. >> back to our congressional correspondent mary bruce at nationals park. that charity baseball game will kick off tonight as planned. good morning again, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, both democrats and republicans here tonight will be wearing special jerseys in a show of unity and to pay tribute to congressman scalise. they will be honoring those

we're back now with more on the congressional baseball shooting. i had the honor to sit down exclusively with former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords who was seriously wounded in a mass shooting in 2011. thankfully she has made a remarkable recovery but she still has difficulty speaking at times. i sat down with her and her husband mark kelly to hear their inspirational message of support and strength. you both expressed your concerns in a very powerful statement saying it's not about being a republican, not about being a democrat, you said this shooting is an attack on all who serve and on all who participate in our democracy. what was your initial reaction

when you heard about the shooting? >> i'm so sad. so sad. >> i think it's also an attack on democracy. >> yeah. >> just like in january 2011 and at the safeway grocery store, i mean that was an attack on democracy as well. >> that attack was the assassination attempt six years ago that left gabby giffords with a severe brain injury. today she along with her husband mark kelly have become passionate advocates for better gun control legislation. >> stopping gun violence takes courage. i've seen great courage when my life was on the line. >> you travel the country and it's kind of like, wow, people are on this side and that side and trying to bring people together. what is your message? what is your thought on how we can bridge this divide in the country? >> try to understand the people on the other side. gabby was a democrat who served in a republican district and knows a lot about moderation and working across party lines. >> now is the time to come

together, be responsible. democrats, republicans everyone. >> and it's a challenging time for our country. i don't have to tell you there's been rhetoric on both sides of the aisle. >> yes. >> there's been this feeling of a great divide in our country and some republicans who are pointing to the heated rhetoric that's been directed toward president trump as one of the factors in the shooting. gabby, what can we do to bring this country together? >> democrats, republicans. >> they need to work together. >> work together. >> you know, understanding that we're all in this together and that we, you know, we need to kind of join together to solve our nation's problems. >> remember, 2011, that was the last time that we had a shooting like we did yesterday and the way that they have been so vocal, both of them in getting the word out and to everyone is

we write everything together. we're the parents of five kids and we've never had an argument. >> that's a lie. >> no. >> we've never disagreed on anything. [ laughter ] it's only been perfection. no, it's amazing. i mean we both have -- we met and we started working together. she was kind of coaching me in acting and then it turned into writing together but, yeah, we only know that kind of doing everything together. >> so you hit on your teacher kind of? that's right. very much so. >> just wanted to be honest about what went on. did you ever think about quitting stand-up to be a stay-at-home dad. >> well, you know, i tell you, my wife had this health scare so it entered my mind that, you know, i would, you know, have to retire and be a very mediocre dad but, yeah, it's a scary thought. but, you know, luckily i'm married to wonder woman so -- >> yeah. [ applause ] how is she doing? >> she's good. she's good. it was very scary.

she had a brain tumor, believe it or not. and it was removed and the tumor is gone. everything is fine, the tumor is is gone along with my ability to ever win another argue many. >> glad she's doing well. >> you've been taking on serious acting roles lately like in "chuck." >> that was really a blast. i mean i love acting. it's just the process of getting acting sgr acting jobs. the auditioning is just brutal. it's just -- it's like i describe it -- it's like stripping but you don't get the dollars. you know. it's brutal. you know. it's amazing. but i do love it. it's fun. you know, i love stand-up and acting. i mean you, of course, have 15 careers. i don't know what -- >> and actual stripping. have you seen his -- >> is there anything he can't do? >> they were fake dollars. that was the problem. ♪ money money money

♪ and what a home it is. debbie's son todd inviting us in stuffed with memories of so many hollywood legends from the golden era of tinseltown many of them her close friends. >> frank sinatra, katharine hepburn. greer garrison and all of these photographs are inswiebed to her which is amazing. >> reporter: debbie is credited for wanting to save the history of hollywood for future generations. >> she was passionate about preserving that history. she knew it was important. she just could not understand why the rest of the industry didn't think so. >> reporter: she started her collection in 1970 at mgm studio auction and over four decades brought together tens of millions of dollars worth of treasures. >> this is my mother's costume from "singin' in the rain." this is the birthday cake that she pops out of. all i do is dream of you, you know, they do that cute little charleston dance number. ♪ ♪ dreaming of you

>> reporter: and now some of her personal possessions including another "singin' in the rain" dress she wore with gene kelly are up for auction with some proceeds going to charity. >> we have a lot of her jewelry, you know, things she wore, we have a lot of these things are photo i.d.'d from specific things she would go to, award shows. >> the jewelry, it shows a lot of personality. things most of us were able to see on remember the ornate bed from "guedesiree" -- >> carrie slept in it for about three years of her life. >> reporter: but debbie's ultimate treasure. her kids. carrie and todd's booties preserved in bronze next to her lifetime achievement academy award. >> what's cool about my mother's life. it was a life well lived. and she lived and did everything that she ever dreamed of.

brought them to set one day, zoe, you can have one. cool, i'm going to eat all of them and so she brought some to the premiere and i ate them during the movie. >> gluten-free and -- >> delicious. >> nothing makes friends like true. moms know that and i heard you shot this in the hamptons but it wasn't like a five-star hampton retreat. but, zoe, you brought enough stuff to make it your own. so tell us how you made the environment your own. >> i travel a lot so i think it's important to try and, you know, keep your environment cozy so i brought like i brought throw pillows and brought a speaker, i brought a light. >> tapestries, scarves. >> candles to throw over lamps. also lamps, i mean it was lie ache zoe kravitz den. unbelievable. >> i made the room sexy. >> as you should. you're going to be there for awhile and, you just got married recently. congratulations. >> thank you. >> but you did not -- beautiful picture of you and your husband. >> look at him. >> you did not have a
