>> so many lawmakers told us they hope this is a turning point in the country that we bring down the temperature of the rhetoric. you can see them praying, both democrats and republicans kneeling on that field just a day after the shooting and that was quite a moment, robin. >> it certainly was. >> almost 25,000 people were at the game. a record crowd. the most we've ever seen, 25,000 showing their support and unity. the fans holding up these signs saying scalise strong and one family. that is awesome. >> the president also had a message for the crowd. we'll have much more on that ahead. first to the breaking news this morning, the russian defense ministry saying they may have killed isis leader abu bakr al baghdadi. our chief investigative correspondent brian ross has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the claim came this morning if an official statement from the russian defense ministry say they may have killed the isis leader in an air strike about two weeks ago. this morning the u.s. military says it cannot confirm the claim but if true it would certainly be a major victory against isis.

abu bakr al baghdadi's brutal reign only began three years ago but in that time as the founder of isis, he became the face of evil to the civilized world. >> history will regard baghdadi as a blood thirsty tyrant. during his reign his organization conquered a vast stretch of territory ruled over something like 5 million people and he imposed his iron will and executed anyone who stood in his way. >> reporter: and it was baghdadi who inspired his followers to stun the world with social media videos that depicted barbarism and atrocity, among his thousands of victims were four young americans taken hostage in syria. james foley, steven set love, peter and kayla mueller whose parents say baghdadi took her as his personal sex slave before she died in captivity. >> look at the symbolism in that. he's raping america. >> reporter: he had been a prime target of u.s. forces and he has

been reported dead many times before only to reappear. the russians claim one of their air strikes last month near the city of raqqah targeted a meeting of top isis leaders and that some 300 of them were killed. the russians say baghdadi was at that meeting and that's why they say they may have killed him but the statement is far from definitive and no word of baghdadi's fate. >> many claims that he was killed before. brian, thanks. >> more on that. joining us is abc news consultant colonel stephen ganyard. if baghdadi is, indeed, dead, what does this mean for the fight against isis. >> robin, probably in the short term it will have some effect in the fight around raqqah. it may upset the isis leadership. so but longer term think about what happened after bin laden, not much. this is an ideological struggle.

not like north korea where if kim jong-un was killed the regime would collapse. in an ideological structure like this killing an individual soldier may not have a long-term effect. >> as david just mentioned this is not the first time that he has been reported dead. so how do we know for sure? >> well, we don't. remember, raqqah is a city under siege so the russians have no hard evidence. there's no dna evidence that would suggest that he's dead. the other thing is this morning, robin, the department of defense and the u.s. has told us that they've heard no chatter. so nothing to back it up. no intelligence to back it up. we need to remain suspect in the claim. >> i'm sure. thanks so much. robin, we turn back to that baseball game we began with. players from both teams wearing the lsu gear to honor congressman steve scalise. quite a game, the images were powerful. congressional correspondent mary bruce was there and joins us from nationals park this morning. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, david. yeah, quite a game, indeed.

congressman scalise's condition and the condition of the others injured and you have news about the trophy. >> reporter: david, this morning scalise is still in critical condition. but we're told he is improving. now, also still hospitalized that capitol police officer crystal griner and matt mika, one of the republican coach, all of them very much at the front of everyone's minds here last night and while technically the democrats did win the game this morning they're giving that trophy to steve scalise. >> it's going to be in his office. we loved hearing that. >> we loved hearing he is improving. a lot of other major stories coming out of washington. president trump is heading to miami where he is expected to deliver a speech on u.s. relations with cuba and reverse some of president obama's policies imposing restrictions on travel and trade. and the senate is sending a strong message to russia. voting 8-2 to impose new sanctions for its meddling in the election. this as the president blasts the russian investigation calling it, quote, a witch hunt" amid

reports the special counsel is examining whether he obstructed justice. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has more details for us. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. news the president himself is being investigated for possible obstruction of justice has set him off. he is on a twitter tirade. the president took to twitter lashing out at "the washington post" report that he is now the subject of special counsel robert mueller's investigation into possible obstruction of justice. the president calling it a phony story and the single greatest witch-hunt in american political history led by some very bad and conflicted people. but now another twist, "the post" reporting that as part of the russia probe, mueller is also investigating the finances and business dealings of jared kushner, the president's son-in-law. kushner's lawyer telling ab news we do not know what this report refers to.

mr. kushner previously volunteered to share with congress what he knows about russia related matters. he will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry. >> mr. president, do you believe that you are under investigation now? >> reporter: no comment from president trump, instead he called for unity in the wake of this week's shooting. >> it's more important than ever to help each other, care for each other and remind each other that we are all united. >> reporter: but less than five hours later, he was back on the attack. this time going after democrats and his old opponent, why, he wrote, is that hillary clinton's family and dems dealing with russia are not looked at but my nondealings are. a far cry from his plea issued just hours earlier in the name of his friend steve scalise. that injured congressman now fighting for his life. and this morning, president trump heads to miami where he's expected to announce his new cuba policy. this means rolling back a number of changes that the obama

administration had put into place. fewer americans will be allowed to travel to the island if they go, david, they'll have to go as part of an organized tour group. that's a big change. >> i know you'll cover it throughout the day. see you on "world news tonight." now to tensions growing at bill cosby's sexual assault trial. the jury deadlocked overtight and the judge ordering them to go back and try again. abc's linsey davis outside that courthouse in norristown, pennsylvania, with the latest. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, david. day five and fatigue and frustration have both now set in. it was as if you could see the air going out of the tires yesterday as cosby accusers learned that the jury was deadlocked and at this time cosby supporters now say it's time for the judge to declare a mistrial. >> this is unprecedented. >> reporter: bill cosby's spokesperson expressing outrage overnight arguing it's time for the judge to declare a mistrial. the jury of 12 struggling to reach a unanimous verdict has now deliberated for 40 hours.

thursday morning when jurors reported they were deadlocked. the judge sent them back to try again. while cosby's fate hangs in the balance, andrea constand, the former temple women's basketball director of operations who claims cosby drugged and assaulted her in 2004 tweeted this light-hearted video shooting hoops as she waits in the courthouse for the verdict. the tag line, always follow through. her case against cosby is the only criminal prosecution from the allegations of more than 50 women who have accused the comedian of drugging and/or sexual misconduct. several accusers attended the trial and expressed their frustration with the jury's deadlock. like victoria valentino who has been here for two weeks and came all the way from california. >> i feel very deflated. i'm worried but i do -- i'm holding on to some hope because the judge is telling them to go back in there and work on it. >> reporter: thursday tempers flared on the steps of the

pennsylvania courthouse between cosby supporters and an alleged victim. and while early in deliberations the jury asked to have the testimony from both constand and cosby read back to them it's now been more than 24 hours since the group asked a question. >> in a case like this where you have no witnesses, you have no forensics, it's a he said/she said case and credibility is everything. >> reporter: if the jury comes back again and tells the judge that they are deadlocked at that point it really is at the judge's discretion to determine if he's going to say that this is a mistrial. if he does, at that point bill cosby would walk out a free man and then it would be up to the district attorney's office to determine if they're going to try him again. david. >> linsey davis who has been on the case since the start. dan abrams is with us so they're deadlocked. >> yep. >> the judge tells them to go back and try at it again. how common is it, though, that a jury changes its mind, someone on the jury and come back with a

different decision. >> it happens occasionally. judges do this in any case where a jury says, we can't reach a decision. the judge is effectively saying, please, go back, talk about it. see if you can reach an agreement. think about all of the time and effort that has gone into this trial. he's not saying that but the judge's goal here is see if there's any way to get a verdict. i have seen cases where despite the fact they said we're deadlocked they then change, they talk and they do reach a verdict. but it doesn't happen all the time. >> not all the time. if it comes back and the judge declares a mistrial today what then for bill cosby? he walks free. >> for now then the question do the prosecutors decide to retry him and i think they're going to be two key factors there. number one, what does andrea constand think? does she want to go through this again? if the answer is yes that will have a big impact on the prosecutors. number two, what was the vote on the jury? meaning if they were 11-1 for a conviction, i think it would be hard for the d.a. not to retry

him. if it was 10-2 for an acquittal it makes a much better argument to let it go. >> we'll watch it throughout the day. amy has other news involving u.s. troops. >> the pentagon preparing to send nearly 4,000 more u.s. troops to afghanistan to fight the taliban and isis. that's according to the associated press which reports most of the troops will train and advise afghan forces. and there are new tensions now between the u.s. and turkey following this brawl in washington last month. police say bodyguards for the visiting turkish president attacked peaceful protesters and now u.s. officials have a -- issued arrest warrants for 12 of those bodyguards. turkey's president says local police failed to protect him. authorities in london now fear as many as 100 people may have died in wednesday's apartment tower fire. crews are working in secure areas of that building trying to find any remains, a criminal investigation is under way. and a special tribute to adam west better known as tv's

batman. the city of los angeles brought a little bit of gotham city to its own city by activating the bat signal one last time. west died of leukemia last week. finally it looks like this man may be relaxing in a hot tub there but take a look as we pull back. that's actually an eight-foot pothole on a street in jackson, mississippi. he put this on instagram and said chilling in my new hot tub, #jacksonlife. he was trying to raise awareness about the condition of the local roads and guess what, it worked. crews were out yesterday making repairs so the power once again of social media. >> uh-huh. we get things done in mississippi. >> jackson life. >> taken a picture. i wouldn't have crawled into that water. didn't look too good. now to another incredible image or another incredible images showing a blimp crashing right by the u.s. open and rescuers rushing this to save the pilot and alex perez is on the scene in wisconsin. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. you know it's hard to ignore a

playful video hours after doctors revealed otto suffered extensive brain damage during his captivity. warmbier's father railing against the north korean regime's treatment of his son and their claim he contracted botulism. >> even if you believe their explanation of botulism and a sleeping pill causing the coma and we don't, there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret and denied him to notch medical care for so long. >> reporter: after only a one-hour trial in march of last year -- >> i have made the worst mistake of my life. >> reporter: -- warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. >> we're thrilled that our son is on american soil. and i'm able to talk to you on otto's behalf and i'm able to wear the jacket that he wore

when he gave his confession. >> reporter: but this morning, what happened to the university of virginia student during his nearly 18 months of detention. still a mystery. doctors saying all they know is his brain was deprived of oxygen. >> this study showed extensive loss of brain tissue in all regions of the brain. >> reporter: they say they see no evidence of botulism or of physical beatings. doctors say warmbier likely suffered some sort of respiratory arrest, the cause of which is not known. the family are keeping the next steps in his medical care private for now. >> that's understandable. thank you. our senior medical contributor dr. jennifer ashton joins us with more. so what could have possibly caused his condition?

>> well, robin, this is where we have to do that medical detective work and take what we have in front of us, in this case a patient who can't really relate his own history and try to think back in time as to what could cause something like this. when you talk about di fuse global brain damage, that does usually occur as a result of what we call an anoxic brain injury or deprived of oxygen. the brain is incredibly sensitive tissue, can only really withstand that for a few minutes and if that is not correctly and swiftly repaired, absolutely can cause permanent and irreparable and severe brain damage. >> and the doctors say they have ruled out botulism. can that be tested for so far removed? >> well, i mean, in theory, yes, you can test the blood for antibodies to this bacterial toxin. those assays have limited evidence in the medical literature but botulism 101, this is a toxin liberated by a

back tear that can be found in soil, wounds or contaminated food. it causes what we refer to as a descending paralysis so it starts in the head and works its way down the body and, robin, to be clear, there are reports, it is out there in the medical literature that botulism can possibly be used as a weapon of bioterrorism, although, again in this case no evidence from the medical team that is what happened. >> so, what do you believe possibly the prognosis could be for him? >> you know, this is a tragic case and obviously i'm not his physician, even his medical team is not giving what we refer to as a prognosis. you know, in someone who has severe and global or diffuse brain damage we worry about that person being able to protect their airway and aspirating contents from the stomach into the lungs leading to, you know, severe and sometimes fatal pneumonia. but the rehab for someone like this is extensive.

very specialized care is required. >> i would imagine so. jen, thank you very much and, boy, are we thinking about him and his family. thanks so much. >> incredibly sad. we turn to that story breaking oversthiet, two inmates on the run since tuesday finally captured in tennessee taken into custody after a chase with police and abc's steve osunsami is in madison, georgia, this morning where the prisoners were last spotted before they were caught. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, david. the fbi mobile command center is behind me along with law enforcement officers from three states all celebrating the capture. police hope they can have the two fugitives back home as soon as today. caught and headed back to prison this morning, the cell mate, fugitives and now accused murderers seen here in handcuffs in tennessee. the small town georgia sheriff who led the manhunt hopes to have them back in his county today. >> if they waive extradition we'll -- i'll go up to get them. >> reporter: their run from the law came to an end after police say they broke into an elderly

couple's home thursday, held them at gunpoint and then drove off in their suv. >> the couple had the wherewithal to break free and notify authorities. >> reporter: the authorities came running. the high-speed chase lasted for ten miles on interstate 24. >> moving in and out of traffic pretty good. traffic's picking up a little bit. speed's about 100. >> reporter: one of the escaped inmates was driving. the other in the backseat shooting at police. >> i think i hear shots fired. >> reporter: that's when police say they crashed the suv, lost their guns in the wreck, raced into the woods and then walked to a nearby home hoping to steal another car. but the homeowner had a gun and held them until police arrived. >> the homeowner stepped out and held the people there by gunpoint until another neighbor came to assist him. >> reporter: 43-year-old donnie rowe was already doing life in prison. 24-year-old rickie dubose was in for 20 years. now they're facing murder

she was dead after what seemed like a routine visit to the chiropractor. now her family says that chiropractor is to blame. this morning, a lawsuit over the shocking death of playboy model and social media star katie may. >> hi, i'm katie may. >> reporter: claiming the 34-year-old's fatal injury after a visit to the chiropractor last february was the result of medical malpractice. may dying at a hospital a few days after her visit. >> we got a call and by the time my parents got out to l.a., the next day, she was on life support. >> reporter: the suit filed wednesday on behalf of may's 8-year-old daughter against chiropractor eric swartz argues the defendants did not exercise that reasonable degree of knowledge and skill required with a neck manipulation and by not advising may to get a ct scan. >> there was a clear and obvious cause of death that result -- was the result of clear negligence. >> happy veterans day to all our

troops. >> reporter: before her death she boasted more than 2 million instagram followers tweeting about hurring her neck in a shoot, pinched a nerve in my neck on a photoshoot and got adjusted this morning. it really hurts. the chiropractor reportedly tore one of the arteries in her neck cutting off blood flow to her brain. the coroner's report finding blunt force injury of neck a cause of death. in a statement to abc news, the attorney for the chiropractor says, we recognize how tragic the situation is, but an unfortunate outcome does not necessarily mean that malpractice occurred. let's not try this case by allegations and innuendo. >> the fundamental question, jury or judge will have to decide is, was the chiropractor negligent, not did she die as a result of what he did or didn't do. >> reporter: now the lawsuit says may's daughter is traumatized by the loss of her and best friend.

to a point where you'll decide you're not going to do it. even though you're not married why can't you just be a dad now and i was like, well, that's not the way it's supposed to happen. she said, well, you have to talk to this adoption person that i know. just learn the process and i said i'll do that. as a friend she said i'll do an intervention. i talked to the guy and said i appreciate you giving me the information. i'm not ready. i'm not there and then fast forward to dressing room and i thought -- i don't know why he was calling me and he says, you know, there's a wonderful young woman that's having a son in three weeks, would you be interested in adopting him? >> wow. >> and i was like -- >> three weeks. >> what? you know, i didn't -- and, you know -- >> you were there in the delivery room. >> yes. >> from the -- >> i was actually -- i actually went from the set of "all eyes on me."

flew to where she was giving birth and i was there in the delivery room and cut the cord and, you know, i'm so proud that pierce, his name is pierce hill harper that he chose me to be his dad. >> he chose you. >> yeah, that's beautiful. hil hill. >> the biggest blessing of my life. >> the biggest role. >> and certainly the biggest blessing. i was so afraid and didn't know. how am i going to do it? i never even changed a diaper. i changed a lot now. >> what has been the biggest challenge and most rewarding? >> you know, the biggest challenge one thing parents -- they don't give you the real down-low. every day, you're making a different set of decisions that you feel impact the future of this wonderful person, you know, and so that's a challenge. it's a beautiful challenge but it's a challenge and the most rewarding thing is the fact that i never felt that i could love this deeply. i love him and he's my son. you know, it's a beautiful --
