but analysts say if it were launched on a flatter trajectory it's capable of reaching alaska or even further east. david kerley has the latest. >> reporter: this launch appears to be a major break through, a north korean two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile. supervising it all, kim jong un, it's a missile that could potentially reach the u.s. kim, his military leaders and scientists all celebrating. a success, declared a news reader. north koreans applauding the news. the missile reached 1700 miles high, landing in the water 577 miles east in the sea of japan, angering the japanese. experts believe such a missile might be able to reach alaska. north korea's military calling this the quote, final step in creating a competent and powerful nuclear state that can strike anywhere on earth. that possibility, that escalation coming just days after president trump worried about a nuclear warhead on this

type of missile put north korea on notice. >> the era of strategic patience with the north korean regime has failed. many years and it's failed. and frankly, that patience is over. >> reporter: reaction came in a new tweet. quote, does this guy have anything better to do with his life? hard to believe that south korea and japan will put up with this much longer. perhaps china will put a heavy move on north korea and end this nonsense once and for all. but just two weeks ago mr. trump appeared to have given up on china, quote, it has not worked out. at least i know china tried. and then just hours ago a physical response from the u.s. and south korea. each country firing a short-range missile in accord natded event. those missiles landing off of south korea. the u.s. army is calling it a demonstration of precision

firing capability in response to what it called north korea's unlawful actions on the fourth of july. the u.s. has just requested that a meeting be held at the u.n. security council on wednesday. the u.s. ambassador to the u.n., nikki haley said she spent all day in meetings, talking about this launch. david kerley, abc news, the white house. david thank you. and president trump is hiding to poland today ahead of the g-20 summit in germany, and his much-anticipated meeting with russian president vladimir putin. the white house is describing friday's meeting as a normal bilateral discussion. but russia is calling it a full-fledged formal sit-down with an agenda that includes the war or terror, and sanction. the white house is not saying whether the president will confront putin about election middling. now 40 states say they are

unwilling or unable to give information to the voter commission. the information sought includes the last four digits of social security numbers. the president has claimed that millions voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election but has yet to provide any evidence for that claim. and now overseas, iraq's prime minister is congratulating both government forces and brave residents for what he's calling the big victory over isis in mosul. his jubilation coming as fierce fighting still rages in mosul's old city. just days ago, the prime minister declared an end to the isis three-year caliphate in iraq after iraqi forces achieved a win by taking al nouri mosque in the old city. meanwhile in syria, another day of intense fighting played out in raqqah. just a day after u.s.-backed

syrian opposition forces breached the 1300-year old old city wall. the u.s. military said war planes hit two small portions of the wall to allow kurdish allies to push through. isis fighters, however, have been for thefying their positions, even booby trapping portions of the old wall to protect their defactor capital in syria. a bipartisan delegation of senators visiting troops in afghanistan is calling on president trump to come up with a coherent strategy to combat the taliban. john mcquacain and elizabeth wan were part of the group. they said it will take more than dropping bombs to win america's longest war, now in the 16th year. >> we need a new strategy, and that means to win. the strategy before was, quote, don't lose. and we lost some brave, young americans and a lot of brave young afghans, we need a strategy to win. the strongest nation on earth
