evening for fors in philadelphia. it's wednesday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the first of two blazes forcing evacuation of residents. we focus first on an apartment building fire in center city. christie ileto is at 13th and walnut. what's the latest there? >> jim, fire crews are on scene. residents in the apartment building at 13th and walnut will not be allowed to return home because lni has to do inspections after the blaze. firefighters believe the fire started in an air conditioning unit before quickly spreading. >> there was a loud banging exproatioexplosion noise. >> that sound came from what investigators believe was a fire starting in an air conditioning

unit at this apartment building at 13th and walnut. >> i was terrified. i thought it would get out of control. >> did you smell the smoke? >> it was coming down the stairs. >> firefighters had to break windows to pull several feet of hose up 12 flights of stairs. >> it's a lot more labor intensive than dwellings. the chief's call for extra help made a great aggressive attack and saved the building. >> the blaze is believed to have started on the second floor and race today the third. the smoke billowing could be seen as far as south philadelphia. a viewer snapped this photo from the baseball stadium. >> it's scary when you walk out and saw all of the fire trucks and realize it was real.

complex showing flames out of a second floor unit on yarmouth lane just after 4:30. the owner was trying to smoke out a bees nest when the home caught fire. >> rachel quick began alerting neighbors and frank jumped in to help realizing an elderly couple lived in the unit. the couple didn't realize how much the fire had spread. >> she was trying to put it out with a pitcher of water. i was like, we have to go. her husband, he has parkinson's. he can't move so i carried him out and that was it. >> they thanked him with a hug. firefighters responded to the two alarm blaze. it tends to run the building.

one firefighter was injured after a of hose hit his head and he went to the hospital with minor injuries. firefighters rescued two pets. everyone else was out safely before they arrived. two units are destroyed. nine people are grateful they live in a community everyone is looking out for each other. >> it's just being neighborly. >> that firefighter that was in the hospital was expected to be released tonight. again, he suffered minor injuries. the red cross is assisting the families out of their homes tonight including the elderly couple. annie mccormick, "action news" wphl-17 back to you. a buck's county woman's efforts to save her pets from her burning home turned deadly. tabetha ra rutecki originally ss

escaped her burning home but went back to get her dog and cat and didn't make it out alive. her husband and mother-in-law were treated for minor burns. >> the death of a woman is being called suspicious. they have identified her at 58-year-old desirae weem. an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. right now authorities are saying her death is believed to be an isolated incident and the community is safe. >> police have released a second suspect in connection with a series of robberies. they arrested martinez last night. martinez and mckee are being charged as adults. they robbed two taxi drivers and held up two tourists at

gunpoint. >> they are baby, a 16 and 17-year-old committing these type of crimes, terrorizing these people. these are han heinous street robberies. >> on a brighter note, good samaritans donated $1,000 each to the tourists. >> abington police are asking for help to catch a criminal that used a razor sharp claw during a robbery. the bladed glove like this similar to the characters of wolverine and freddy krueger. it was a real live nightmare for qdoba employees threatened in a back office saturday. a second suspect wielded a large kitchen knife. they got away with money but no one was hurt. >> the police department is

mourning the loss of a beloved canine named hank. he helped make 93 apprehensions during his career. hank suffered a brief illness and died monday at an animal hospital. the eight foot long snake that caused a scare in philadelphia is home with his rightful owner. residents of point breeze came across this burmese python slithering in a flower garden. it was behaving okay but caused quite a surprise. they called 911. a sergeant took matters into his own hands. literally. after bagging the ?aim the reptile spent the day at animal care and control until the owner saw the story on the news and discovered where his missing pet was. >> i was working in the yard.

i didn't notice he slithered out and made his way across the street. >> he's had the snake five years but recently moved into the house and his neighbors didn't knowknow he had a python for a . >> meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the big board. accuweather is saying what? >> we have downpours on the way. there is a frontal boundary to the south. this is gradually working to the north. it's low pressure. what this is doing is inching to the east. that will enhance moisture. it's not going to rain all day, though. the morning commute will be dry. clouds, temperatures comfortable at 6:00, 89 by 8:00, 70-degrees.

call to 911. >> she was on duty, serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in and doing the job she loved. >> she died in a hospital a few hours after being ambushed. police say this shooter was this mand, alexander bonds. he was killed with a brief shootout with other officers. investigators are looking for a motivate. >> you will recall the ambush of a philadelphia police officer in january last year. the gunman opened foor as officer jesse hartman was sitting in his patrol car. he survived the attack, chased down and shot the suspect. edward archer claimed to do it in the name of islam. his trial is scheduled tomorrow
